Lacrosse Championship Coming to
Wesley Chapel
L
acrosse is a competitive sport that dates back to aboriginal tribes at the time Christopher Columbus set foot in the new world. The rules to this sport were quite simple. The ball must not be touched by hands, and you throw, catch and convey it into a goal to score a point. Today Lacrosse is not much different, but it is played in almost every country in the world. It is especially popular in the United States and the European Union. This full
contact sport is only offered in certain High schools and we are fortunate enough that Wesley Chapel High School has its own program. The Wesley Chapel Community is proud to reveal that the Dicks Tournament of Champions will be held at Wesley Chapel District Park and Wesley Chapel High school in December. This National Lacrosse Tournament is for Pre-collegiate clubs and consistently features the United States top high school and youth players.
Participants often see themselves competing in collegiate championships and many are now stars on the National Lacrosse League. We are proud to be hosting this event for 8 years and hopefully more to come. If you are a part of a local team please feel free to contact us. We will love to showcase teams all the way up to the event. Email: Editorial@ KEMMediaGroup.com Phone: (813) 501-4894•

Partnering toward a more autism accessible experience, MOSI and BCOTB announce groundbreaking collaboration Tampa Bay’s leading experts in Autism Spectrum Disorder will guide MOSI in shaping its current campus and learning programs
T
o make fun and learning even more open to all families in Tampa Bay, the area’s leader in hands-on science learning is teaming up with the community’s largest provider of Autism Spectrum Disorder analysis and care. The partnership between the Museum of Science & Industry (MOSI) and Behavioral Consulting of Tampa Bay (BCOTB) is the first of its kind for either organization. Working under the motto “partnering toward a more autism accessible experience,”
the collaboration will lead to more vital science and math education for a wider range of students in Tampa Bay, richer and more fulfilling time together for families that include children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and guidelines for other museums and businesses that are looking to create a more inclusive experience. “At MOSI, our core goal is to make science real for people of all ages and backgrounds. By partnering with BCOTB, we are taking that pledge further than ever before,” said
MOSI President & CEO Molly Demeulenaere. “Creating a more autism accessible experience means a fresh look at everything on our current campus – from the layout of our hands-on exhibits all the way back to how we let our guests know what to expect before they arrive.” BCOTB and MOSI have already performed a thorough assessment of the science center’s current 300,000 square foot facility on E. Fowler Ave. in Tampa. Some potential changes identified in the study include revising
maps and signs to clearly show families what kinds of sensory information (lights, sounds, etc.) to expect in certain areas and rearranging some exhibits to allow families to bypass sections they may find overwhelming. MOSI’s new website, set to launch in September, will incorporate new features to improve autism accessibility. “This is a fantastic way to take the expertise BCOTB has developed and bring it out into the Tampa Bay community,” BCOTB President and Founder Kelley Prince said. We’re excited to help MOSI take that to the next level.”•

Strategies for Helping Your Child
Succeed in School BY FAYE ADAMS
ONLINE ESL TEACHER and CO-AUTHOR OF PURPOSEFULMOMS.COM
A
s an educator for a little over ten years, I always enjoyed celebrating student success. It was something we strived for as a class and as a school especially at the high performing charter school in Pasco County where I served for five of those years. I was always thrilled year after year in seeing our students perform at the top of our district on their standardized test scores during my years of serving as a third grade teacher at Dayspring Academy. Regardless of where a teacher or parent stands, though,
in support of formative assessments, the end goal for all is the same...To see each child reach his or her highest potential every year. With this being our focus, let’s take a look at a few strategies we can use to ensure we are doing our part to provide our children with the best possible chances for success.
Provide a new perspective.
Since our outlook often affects the way we respond to tasks in front of us, it’s important that as adults we help our children face the school year with a winner’s mindset. It’s the same reason
coaches give pep talks in the locker room before a game. The intent is to gear the athlete’s mindset toward success. And if it’s true that one’s attitude before facing an opposing team is important, how much more the perspective our children have when facing the tasks in front of them? Tasks that in the long term will most certainly play an important role over time in preparing them for their future careers. Our role as parents and educators is therefore to reframe our children’s perspective regarding the learning opportunities and challenges they face, so they build up the will to fight for their success.

Minimize stress. As teachers and parents, our role in promoting high expectations and a push toward success should never be driven by negativity. After all, we don’t want to give our little ones gray hairs before their time. Instead, we need to do everything possible to make learning an enjoyable experience, something our children see as important and worthy of their time. Therefore, in light of this, as adults who know the value education has on our children’s future, we should look for creative ways to inspire them. Here are a few examples: • Turn homework and
BACK TO
school good grades into a “game” by giving points for neat and excellent work, and use those points toward helping your child earn tangible rewards like prizes, toys, and fun activities. (Remember to keep your expectations high and yet balanced with an understanding of what your child’s very best efforts are capable of producing.) • Highlight progress. Kids love recognition…and especially from those they love and respect. Give your children specific verbal praise, and post up their good work for all to see in a visibly designated area. • Have your children find creative ways to share what
the week that they can share highlighting the many things they’ve learned that week. And perhaps even have them share what they are learning with other also. • Above all, keep it positive! We want our children to enjoy learning.
Nurture the character qualities from which winners are built.
Perseverance, determination, commitment, a work ethic focused on excellence…All of these traits can be found in the greatest
when your child needs help, and motivate them with your words. Affirm your belief in
could better understand it. Help your child get a concrete understanding of what they
Faye, a former Florida educator and currently an online ESL teacher, is the co-author of PurposefulMoms.com. During her years as a third grade teacher, Adams developed educational tools to help students grasp and retain challenging concepts. (Many of them can be found on her online store entitled “They Can Learn It” on TeachersPayTeachers.) Her students continually performed at the top of the district on their standardized assessments, and in 2013, she was pleased to learn their students’ scores placed them in the top 4% of Florida schools. In 2014, Faye served as a volunteer teacher ambassador for the Foundation for Excellence in Education, sharing Florida’s success as one of the top ten states as well as promoting higher standards. You can read more from Faye by checking out her blog at PurposefulMoms.com. they have learned during week in school. Talk about the challenges as well as their academic wins in the car or around the dinner table. Think about allowing them to create a recording throughout
of athletes, businessmen, and effective leaders. Don’t wait until the “tree” is already past its development stages before you decide to direct how it will grow. Begin now. Offer support and encouragement
their abilities to succeed, and most importantly, continue to give them a vision for how far they can go and the future that is possible for them to achieve.
Break big concepts into bite-sized pieces.
Our children…are children after all. Yes, we need to continually help our little ones develop higher vocabulary, but it’s important to remember that we often understand information by connecting it to prior knowledge. So, use analogies, clear visuals, stories and examples…things that will help your children relate better to new content. As a teacher when it came to math, I often said, “When in doubt, draw it out!” I realized that if my students could “see” a concept visually, they
are learning by not only using your words but through other tools as well that will help paint a better picture for them.
Whether your child is an A-student or you’ve seen a great need for progress over the years, remember the “why” of learning (their reason and motivation) is equally important as “what” (the content). As teachers and parents we definitely have a tremendous opportunity to help frame the way our children view education as well as influencing their efforts towards putting forth their personal best. This year, let’s give each of them a reason to excel beyond where they’ve been before! •

2016-2017 District 6890 Governor Joyce Ann Gunter Visited The Rotary Club of New Tampa
otarian Joyce Gunter, the fourth District 6890 Governor from the Rotary Club of New Tampa (RCNT) in only 20 years, made her official visit to her home club recently. Dr. Thomas Wade, Douglas Andrews, and Joyce’s husband, Gary Gunter, all preceded her as district governors. Joyce and Gary are only the second DG couple ever to serve in District 6890. District Governor Gunter told the club about some of her favorite experiences as a Rotarian and why she’s so passionate about Rotary. In addition, she
informed the club members about her goals for District 6890 for 2016 – 2017. “I am very excited about the Rotary Foundation celebrating its 100th birthday this Rotary year and am looking forward to attending the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, GA in June 2017 with all of my fellow Rotarians,” said Gunter. During her visit, she presented several awards to members of the RCNT. Derek Usman, who has been a member for less than a year, and Jim Dietz, a new member, each were given a “Rising Star” for their exemplary work in enhancing the club’s Greeter Program. “Shining Star” awards were given to: 1) Matt Palmer, for his
superb work producing the weekly Club Bulletin; 2) Brad Page, for his continued dedication to the success of the Fisher House project. 3) Craig Miller, for being an
“idea man” and continually volunteering to assist with various club projects; and 4) Ann Wade, for her excellent work as the Rotary Club of New Tampa’s historian.•

Purposeful Moms
Let Our Expertise
Go to Work for YOU!
With Summer ending and children heading back to
school, August seemed like the perfect time to share the launch of PurposefulMoms.com. As sisters who were raised by a purposeful mom, and as women who want to be a blessing to our children and our families, the name “PurposefulMoms.com” came from a desire in each of our hearts to live with more intention and purpose in our daily lives. To be completely honest, the title we chose was a bit daunting at first. Would writing this blog give readers the impression that we were putting ourselves out there as “perfect” moms? Better moms? Moms who never made mistakes? Whoa, Buddy… Not at all. In fact, if that were the case, we would have shut it all down before ever launching into cyberspace. After all, motherhood is a journey not a destination. We’re continuously growing as moms, and something we’re encouraged by (and which we hope to convey) is the fact that 21st Century cellphone toting mamas, like you and I, can find simple and practical ways to break out beyond the mundane (or even “survival mode”), learning new ways to be purposeful and focused in the love and attention we give to our children. PurposefulMoms.com is all about sharing our journey as mothers, as we strive, with God’s help, to live in these more focused and intentional ways, and in the process use our stories, the lessons we’re learning, and the ideas we find helpful to encourage others along in their journey as well. Blog posts such as “Confessions of a Self-Diagnosed ADD Mom”, “Going Outside..On Purpose”, and “When in Barnes & Noble, Play with the Trains” are just a few of the posts you’ll read where you’ll truly begin to see the sincerity of our hearts as moms, realizing PurposefulMoms.com is all about us finding ways to be more intentional and focused in our everyday lives. About the Purposeful Mom Bloggers Suzette, the oldest of the two sisters, prior to becoming a mom taught for 11 years at private Christian schools. She married her sweetheart in July 2004 and now has two children, a daughter (8 years old) and a son (4 years old). In addition to blogging, Suzette’s hobbies include reading, photography, and memory keeping. Faye, the younger of the two sisters, and a Wesley Chapel mom also had a career in education prior to beginning her journey into motherhood. She taught for a total of 10 years, teaching both at a Christian school and at a high performing charter school. In addition to blogging, she is also working as an online teacher of ESL students. In 2010, she married the love of her life, and together they have a precious little boy (who is 2 years old). In addition to blogging, Faye’s hobbies include photography and designing educational resources and clip art to sell via her two TeachersPayTeachers online shops: TheyCanLearnIt and ClipArtChuckleBerry.•

Pledge to Pack A+
Healthier
Lunchbox
I
f good eating habits have fallen by the wayside during the summer break, you can kick off this school year right by pledging to guide your family toward healthier lunches. “Back to school is a great time for families to make a healthy resolution they can carry on through the duration of the school year,” said Trish James, vice president, Produce for Kids. “As a mom of two boys, I understand the challenges parents face when packing a healthy, nutritious lunch for their children and for themselves. The Power Your Lunchbox Pledge was designed to help families tackle this universal challenge.” The initiative gives parents tools and tips – such as this time-saving makeahead pizza pocket recipe – to achieve a great start for back to school, while giving back to children in need. Every online pledge results in a $1 donation to Feeding America programs that support families and children.

affairs
New (School) Year, New You
Make family resolutions that stick Forget Jan. 1st. Parents know the real new year begins when you can smell the fresh pink erasers and hear the clatter of brand new pencils on still-smooth notebook covers. Even if you don’t have kids in school, the end of summer and the beginning of fall is a great time to reassess, realign, hit the restart button and make resolutions that will help carry your family smoothly through until next summer – or at least until the holidays.
Here are some tips from parents about resolutions they’ve made for the coming school year:
Learn to love mornings
My Life and Kids blogger Anna Luther said she used to hate mornings. “It was a disaster,” she said. “There was a lot of yelling, a lot of missing socks, a lot of arguments about eating a good breakfast – it was just not the way to start a productive, happy day.” Luther decided to turn the first – and worst – hour of her day into one of the best by waking up earlier, exercising and turning on music. Luther also changed the way she looked at breakfast. “It doesn’t have to be from scratch,” she said, “but it does have to have protein – and be fast. We love frozen breakfast burritos, for example.”
Empower the kids
Luther said that another thing that made mornings exhausting was that she tried to do everything herself, from finding socks and brushing hair to heating up healthy breakfasts. But kids are eager to help, she said. Just like adults, they feel empowered when they can do things for themselves. Luther decided to empower her kids and simplify her life at the same time by creating “Get Ready Buckets,” which hold everything they need to get moving in the morning, from hairbrushes to socks.
That same message of empowerment can simplify and improve other stressful times of day. Do the kids walk in the door hungry and cranky and leave you feeling the same way? Stock the freezer with hearty snacks, such as El Monterey Taquitos, that kids can heat up on their own.
Appreciate others
Blogger Kristyn Merkley of Lil’ Luna, has resolved to show the teachers in her life how much she and her family appreciate them. “Our teachers put so much time and effort into their jobs,” Merkley said, “and we’re so grateful for that.” While she usually gives teachers a gift card at the end of the year, she doesn’t wait until then to send notes and emails with a simple, “Thank you.” She also makes sure to say thanks in person – and in front of her kids.
Make fun a priority
There are plenty of must-dos on your list every day, but is fun one of them? Merkley said it should be, and she’s making family fun a resolution this school year. She collects activities on her blog that kids and adults can do together and plans family fun nights around them. “When we laugh and make things and learn things together,” she said, “we’re making memories. I want my kids to remember their childhoods as more than just getting to school on time and cleaning their rooms.”
Be a team
Kristy Denney, of the Boys Ahoy blog, is raising three wild boys, as she calls them. But even the wildest of kids wants to know that you’re on their team – and they’re on yours. Denney and her husband, Brett, chose a family motto for the school year so that everyone on their family team knows what they’re working toward. As their motto, the Denneys chose, “Work hard and be nice.” It’s simple,
succinct and sums up what they want for their family.
Fuel up with real food
Kids have to eat, and most insist on eating three or more times a day. Denney said she loves to cook from scratch, but she doesn’t want time in the kitchen to keep her away from her family. So, this year, she’s resolving to focus on what’s important: real ingredients. “Sometimes I’ll buy the ingredients myself to cook from scratch and sometimes I’ll look for foods I recognize on the label,” she said. “When I pick up El Monterey Signature Burritos, I see ingredients like fresh-baked tortillas, real cheddar cheese – foods I would buy anyway for my family, so I feel great about that.”
Make snacks work hard
Jess Kielman, who writes the blog Mom 4 Real, said that snacking can sometimes be a problem in her house. Kids (and adults) sometimes snack because they’re bored – or just out of habit, so she’s reining in snack time and making snacks work just as hard as meals. “Protein and real food – that’s what I’m going to look for in afternoon snacks,” she said. “Something that fills the kids up and gets them ready to get back out the door and play, or buckle down and do their homework.”
Cheer on #momwins
Kielman said that this year her resolution is to start giving herself a little more credit for her “mom wins,” big or small. “Checking off every last thing on my spring cleaning checklist is a win, for sure,” she said, “but so is a good, smooth morning with my family. So is a sit-down dinner that didn’t stress me out. So is feeling good about what we’re eating. So is every little hug. Those are all #momwins, and I’m going to give myself a little pat on the back for every one.” For more breakfast, snack and dinner ideas to help you keep your family resolutions, visit ElMonterey.com.•

The newly remodeled Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppe in Zephyrhills got a chance to show off its new look at a ribbon cutting on Monday, July 25. Members from the Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce, County Commissioner Mike Moore, Gulfside staff and volunteers, and community members all took part in the event as part of the store’s grand re-opening after an in-depth renovation. “I want to say thank you to everyone involved in helping with this renovation, and especially Rasmussen College who came in to work and help us paint. They joined in across all four of our five thrift shops and truly made a difference in our community,” said Allison Maughn, Chief Financial Officer at Gulfside. “We only have about 15 paid staff members across all five Thrift Shoppe locations, and they coordinate with more than 200 volunteers to keep the stores running smoothly. Thanks to them, we do about 250,000 transactions at the stores, which is amazing.” “I was amazed to hear how much money these thrift shops bring in, and those are important dollars. Without that money, think about the patients that wouldn’t be provided

care. There would be a void there, and people would not have that care they need and deserve,” said Pasco County Commissioner Mike Moore. “I really hand it to the people who work with hospice, whether it be the volunteers, the CNAs, the home health aides, the nurses, the case managers, the CFOs and the CEOs. Anybody and everybody who works with hospice, you are touching peoples’ lives on a day-to-day basis.” The remodel at the Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppe in Zephyrhills, located at 36524 State Road 54, included painting the interior of the store, updating the store’s bathrooms, laying new tile and redesigning the merchandise layout. The store is just one of five stores in Pasco County that support Gulfside Hospice. The stores are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The stores sell a variety of items, including clothing, shoes, purses, furniture, collectibles and household items. Other locations include Dade City, Hudson, Lutz and New Port Richey. For more information about the Gulfside Hospice Thrift Shoppes, visit www.GHPPC.org or call 800-561-4883.•
North Tampa Arts League
Each quarter the North Tampa Arts League ( NTAL ) selects a Featured Artist at their quarterly Show and Tell. During the Show and Tell, the artists are asked to describe their work and answer
questions concerning the work. The NTAL members vote blind ballet from the art work presented. This quarter, Virginia Butler was selected as Featured Artist.•
ABOUT VIRGINIA BUTLER I acquired my painting skills by attending a few art classes, but mostly I learned on my own by reading books, magazines, and visiting art museums. “The passion I have for wildlife inspires my art. We all know that our dogs and cats have personalities and their own ways of being, well, this is also true of all nature’s creatures. I volunteer at the local zoo and get to work with a lot of animals. I see personality in all of God’s creations from
fur, feather and even reptiles. I’m a detailed person; I love to paint each hair or feather and make each painting look
real. I paint subjects I have a passion for and feel my work has accomplished its purpose when a viewer feels that same
passion.” Contact Information: Phone: 813/789-9547 Email: ginpaint@verizon.net

PETS
August Kittens of the Month Scarlett, Slade, Batali and Shayla Scarlett (F) and Slade (M) are soft and sweet 5.5-month-old kittens who need a furrever home. Scarlett and Slade have tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). but they can still live very normal lives. Please see more information below about FIV. They were slowly introduced into a foster home with resident FIV+ and FIV- kitties living together. In typical kitten fashion, they love to play and even entice the resident adults into playing with them. Scarlett loves wet food and becomes extra affectionate in the morning before her morning treat! Scarlett is a black domestic medium hair kitty, and Slade has a unique brown and black tiger markings. When
Scarlett was spayed the fur grew back in gray where she was shaved. It is very adorable. Scarlett and Slade are bonded and need to be adopted together.
Batali is an orange girl who loves her foster calico sister Shayla. They are both four months old. Batali happens to have tested FIV+ but Shayla has tested FIV-. Both are purr-machines! They are both in the process of being introduced to the general population of the foster home. Shayla is a high energy kitten while Batali is a bit more laid back, until something moves of course (like a foot). While these kittens know each other and get along well, it is not required that they are adopted together. If you would like more information or would like to adopt either of these sweet pairs of kittens, please email us at adopt@tampacatcrusaders.org.•
