he weather promises to be clear and crisp. Just the right environment to run through the tree lined streets of Temple Terrace. You could do that on your own, but why? It will be a lot more fun if you join your fellow runners in the 2nd Annual Trot thru the Terrace on November 16, 2013. The race hosted by the GFWC Temple Terrace Junior Womans Club was a
big hit with runners in the inaugural run last year. But this year, the 5k, 10k and 1 mile fun run promises to be even better. Both races begin at 8am and are chip timed. The event is sponsored by Gaspar’s Patio Bar & Grill where the pre-race Packet-Pickup and Carboloading party will be hosted on the Thursday before the race. Jimmy Ciaccio, Gaspar’s owner, will offer a pasta dinner (loaded with those much needed carbs that runners need). Anyone
registered by November 9th will be guaranteed a t-shirt but those who decide to run by the Packet-Pickup party night can sign up too. (You can sign up the morning of the event but that won’t guarantee you a shirt). Unique prizes will be awarded in all age groups in both the 5 and 10k races 1st

Take the Time to Schedule Your Mammogram By Dr. Katherine Reed
Every October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, women are reminded of the importance of early detection and annual mammograms. But how many of us actually follow through on this advice? How many of us said, “I’ll get my mammogram done later, maybe next October?” The numbers for breast cancer survival are very encouraging. With early detection aided by advances in imaging, women are surviving breast cancer in increasing numbers and moving forward with their lives. The mammogram, which can detect breast cancer in women who have no signs or symptoms of the disease, is still considered the gold standard in breast 6
cancer screening. It is recommended that women 40 years and over receive a screening mammogram once a year. In some cases, a mammogram can detect lumps and tumors two years before you or a physician can feel them. Recently, screening mammograms improved with the introduction of 3D mammography. Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, this revolutionary technology, which can be done in conjunction with a traditional 2D digital mammogram, is changing the future of breast screening. During the 3D part of the exam, an x-ray arm sweeps in a slight arc over the breast, taking multiple images. Then a computer produces a 3D image in one millimeter slices, providing greater visibility for the radiologist to see breast tissue detail in a way never before possible. The radiologist can then scroll through images of the entire breast like pages of a book. By looking at the breast tissue in one millimeter slices, the radiologist can provide a more confident assessment. November 2013
Current studies show that with 3D mammography, women are 37% less likely to be called back for additional testing because something unusual appeared on their mammogram. This means fewer women have to undergo the anxiety and distress associated with being called back. And, 3D mammography has also been shown to improve cancer detection by as much as 30%. Having a 3D mammogram is very similar to having a 2D mammogram. There is no additional compression required, and it only takes a few seconds longer for each view. But with 3D technology, we can provide early detection, even earlier. So this November, do something for yourself. Take the time to schedule your mammogram. Don’t wait until next October! To schedule your 3D Mammogram or learn more about our comprehensive Breast Care Center at Florida Hospital Tampa please call (813) 615-7120. The Breast Care Center is located in the LifeHope Medical Offices Building at 3000 Medical Park Drive, Suite 100, Tampa, FL, 33613. • Temple Terrace News
Rotary Club of Temple Terrace
It seems as though the employees of Temple Terrace are all candidates to be Rotarians. The club recognizes City of Temple Terrace employees nominated for special recognition for their “service above self ” attitude or actions quarterly. Rotarians met with two employees recently to say thanks and to hear the stories
for themselves over lunch at Café Kili. Both employees recognized consider their actions as simply
doing their jobs. But the citizens who pay taxes and our elected officials should think otherwise. As you drive through our lovely city you probably don’t notice the many fire hydrants around or much less realize how efficient they are maintained. And if you think that a fire fighters best friend is a firehouse dog - think again. John Shellman, Fire Hydrant Service technician is their best friend and yours too. His work from start to finish and his respect to every detail that makes a hydrant work – every time –takes the pressure and worry off of the firefighter who expects full and efficient service. He is their hero and he was
nominated for what he calls “ just doing his job”. And who doesn’t know the pain of a leaky roof? But have you ever had one so bad you needed 11 garbage cans, coolers and mounds of old t-shirts to catch the water to keep it from dripping onto your floor? Just before the rainy season, the roof started to leak in Gym 3 at the Family Rec. Center – just before 300 kids were set to start the summer program where they gather 5 days a week for fun and recreation. Marshall Duncan, Recreation Supervisor and Aquatics Director for the Parks & Recreation Dept. took matters into his own hands. Using left over tar he climbed onto the roof and patched it himself – unasked – but definitely not unappreciated. His act saved the City at least $4000 – and kept a bunch of kids happily playing in the gym. The TT Rotary Club would be happy to have you join our
club – and anyone who might be interested should stop by any Tuesday morning at 7:30am at the TT Golf & Country Club. Rotarians also did some neighborly work this month as they participated in the City’s first “Potato Vine Raid”. •

TEMPLE TERRACE WINS TWO PLANNING & DESIGN AWARDS
The City of Temple Terrace took home two trophies Thursday night in the 2013 awards presented by the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission. The 31st Annual Planning & Design Awards were announced Oct. 17 during a banquet at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts in Tampa. The Planning Commission received nearly 30 entries for this year’s awards program, officials said. The program invites submissions from planners, architects, builders, developers, residents, community groups, local governments and others that provide examples of sound planning and good design in Hillsborough County. Fifteen awards were issued this year, officials said. The Temple Terrace Community Development Department was honored with the prestigious Executive Director’s Award for its development of a citywide Golf Cart Program. The program, enacted last year, allows residents to operate registered golf carts on city streets and “contributes to the city’s goal of creating a truly multimodal transportation network with alternative modes of transportation and a community that is less dependent on the automobile,” project managers wrote. “It is an honor and privilege to be the recipient of the Executive Director’s Award,” said Community Development Director Charles Stephenson. “Such recognition emphasizes the

efforts of the city’s commitment to being a truly multimodal community. It was a great project to work on, one the entire community can benefit from and enjoy.” The department also shared an Award of Merit with the city’s Code Compliance Department and Parks & Recreation Division for the creation of an Adopt-A-Tree program. The tree project is held in conjunction with the Code Compliance Department’s monthly neighborhood sweeps. Volunteer groups help plant trees in residents’ yards, at no cost to homeowners, to help restore the city’s urban forest. “We are honored by The Planning Commission’s recognition of our tree-planting efforts,” said Code Compliance Director Joe Gross, who spearheaded the program with Parks Planner Dana Carver. “The program’s popularity has relied on the many adoptee homeowners, our shovel sponsors and monthly volunteers, and the ongoing support of our elected officials and department colleagues. The outlook for a rejuvenated urban forest in Temple Terrace is very promising.” More than 200 people attended this year’s awards banquet, hosted by Tampa Electric Co. The ceremony was emceed by ABC Action News anchor Brendan McLaughlin. •

Lewis Elementary School
There is only one word that can describe the month of October. Well okay, maybe two...BIG FUN! The Lewis Panthers started the month off celebrating Grandparents Day by having breakfast with their grandparents or "grandfriend" before school one morning. Next the children became ROCKSTARS at the Pride Walk Kick Off and Fall Dinner. The amount of success for our primary fundraiser was awesome . The food from Antonio's Pasta Grille was delicious and the students had a blast rockin' out while watching their teachers and friends dance and sing along. The Book Fair was also open during the festivities so those last minute book shoppers could grab a book or two. What an amazing night! On October 18th, the students laced up
their sneakers and walked their hearts out all to raise money for the school. The goal for the walk was $20,000.00 and all money raised will go towards upgrades for the school. We ended the month with our iMOM program on the 25th where our very own Guidance Counselor Ms. Lidge was our guest speaker. Thank you to the Lewis Community, all Pride Walk donors , the Book Fair Committee and the Pride Walk Committee for all you did to help our students ROCK!! This month will be just as exciting for our Lewis Panthers. Stay informed by "liking" us on FaceBook or by visiting the PTA website at lewispta.com. SHINING A LIGHT ON BLACK PET SYNDROME gorgeous, charming and as devoted as any other pet, dogs and cats in black often wait longer for homes than their lighter colored pals. There can be several reasons for this phenomenon known as “Black Pet Syndrome”: • Their dark color makes black pets less visible in their kennels/ cages • Silly superstitions and old wives tales, especially about black cats • An unfounded belief that black animals are more aggressive • Negative portrayals of black pets in the media The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, a no-kill for space Anyone who has ever shared their shelter located in West Tampa, is life with a black cat or dog knows confronting this issue head-on by what wonderful pets they can be. holding a “Back in Black” adoption promotion aimed at showcasing And yet, even though they’re
their beautiful black pets. From November 1 – 30, adoption fees for all black dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be half-off. “All of us in animal rescue know this is true, that black cats and black dogs routinely get overlooked by potential adopters,” said Sherry Silk, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Tampa Bay. “And yet, famous leaders favored black pets. For instance during World War II, U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had a black dog and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill had a black cat. Both pets actually sat in on strategic meetings.” Silk went on to say, “Black pets are just as friendly, affectionate and full of personality as any other pet. We encourage people to visit our shelter to meet our black dogs and
cats and create a legend of their own.” The “Back In Black” campaign is supported by Best Friends Animal Society® and Petco Foundation and is being promoted by more than 175 local animal rescue groups and municipal shelters across the country. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay is located at 3607 N. Armenia Avenue and is open for adoptions Tuesday through Friday from noon to 7:00pm and on Saturday and Sunday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The shelter is closed on Mondays. The Society’s Animal Health Center, located just down the street form the shelter at 3809 N. Garden Club A fire truck blocked the street. Police officers walked slowly toward the site. Onlookers gathered and waited for the signal. Golfers wondered, what was the cause of all the attention being given just south of the first hole of the Temple Terrace golf course? Members of the Temple Terrace Garden Club invited Fire and Police officers to a recognition ceremony on Wednesday, October 9th to recognize their daily efforts to keep our city and its citizens safe. The memorial marker clearly shows the three well known sites that shocked our country on September 11, 2001. The marker sits between three Tabebuia trees dedicated by the club in 2002. The trees and their
yellow blooms that burst into color also serve as “yellow ribbons” each year. Cheri Donohue, Club President, thanked the crowd of dignitaries and guests and reminded them that the work of our Fire and Police officers is a daily task – not just something that happened on that awful day – but something that we should never take for granted. She also recognized the generous donation of the bronze plaque and granite base by Garden of Memories. So now, a memorial marker stands quietly to remind us , not so much of what happened, but what constantly happens in our amazing city in our beloved country. •
