Heartbeat International

eart disease is the #1 cause of death and disability throughout the world. Heartbeat International Foundation (HBI), is the only multinational foundation/ non-governmental organization HQ'd in the Tampa Bay area. This is significant because most organizations of this nature are located in the Washington, D.C. and New York City metro areas. NGO's have a tremendous ability to be diplomatic links between their home areas and the foreign locations they serve. NGO's have positive net effects on travel and trade as well. HBI was founded in 1984 by Dr. Henry McIntosh of Lakeland. That's how we came to be located here. Our mission is to provide free cardiovascular implantable devices and lifetime follow-up care for indigent patients all around the world. Since 1984, 14,000 have been saved as a direct result of HBI's mission. HBI carries out

its mission through a network of 13 permanent heart centers in 12 different nations. There are several medically focused organizations that will go into a country for a 4-7 day period and do great work. At the end of that period, they're gone. The HBI mission provides for a permanent presence to ensure that each patient has a lifetime of care available to them. HBI has struggled to build awareness/interest within the Tampa Bay Region. In most cases, we're more well known internationally. In our 30th year this year, we will be embarking on our first domestic/local initiative. This fall, we will be conducting a women's heart health symposium and free heart screenings for women. Heart disease has proven to have a nuanced effect on women. Women are being disproportionately affected. HBI will tackle this problem in Tampa Bay and hopefully be a source of heart disease prevention for many women, this fall.• Ryan Neubauer Public Relations & Partnerships Manager Heartbeat International Foundation, Inc. 813.259.1213 4302 Henderson Blvd. Tampa, FL 33629

roadway Comes To Camp will produce three performances of Irving Berlin’s Annie Get Your Gun on July 24-25 on the campus of Florida College, in Temple Terrace. Producer Royce Chandler directed Broadway shows at Florida College for 11 years, drawing a large following from senior citizens throughout central Florida. He and his wife, Hope, also directed summer camps for the College for 20 years as part of the school’s student recruitment work. Now they have combined their summer camp experience with that of producing a major Broadway musical each summer, recruiting great talent from across the country. Royce and Hope formed The Chandler Family Corporation for Fine Arts, a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation, to produce the camp. Strange Luck by Amie Irene Winters

Amie Irene Winters reveals a rich tapestry of imagination and mystery in her debut young adult fantasy novel, Strange Luck. Now, Amie’s sharing her experiences as a young local author and what inspires her to write. What Is Your New Book About? Strange Luck is about a young girl named Daisy Darling who embarks on a journey to save her ailing father, but instead lands in a dark world built on stolen memories. Daisy must risk her life to destroy the world and restore what is lost. What Is It Like To Be A Young Author In This Day and Age? Exciting! There’s definitely a greater demand for Indie authors and there are many more mediums to help authors publish and promote their work. The reading and writing community is also tremendously supportive. What Made You Decide to Self-Publish Your Novel? I really liked the idea of being in control of my vision and overseeing all aspects of my novel from start to finish. It was such an incredible experience giving creative direction for my book cover and then selecting the final image that perfectly captured my vision. I feel like the whole experience has made me that much more connected to my story and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. What is Your Writing Process? Neil Gaiman (author of Coraline and Stardust) put it perfectly when he said, “This is how you do it: You sit at the keyboard and put one word after another until it’s done. It’s that easy, and that hard.” These are certainly some words to live by and I am constantly fine-tuning my process and figuring out what works best for me. Inspiration knows no schedule. Sometimes I write all day on a Saturday or for five minutes during a week day. Sometimes nothing for a week or more. When I’m inspired, I just jump in and see what happens. Do You Have Another Project in the Works? If so, What? Definitely. I’m in the process of working on a spellbinding YA Fantasy tale called The Nightmare Birds. It’s about a beautiful young witch who joins a mysterious circus, which claims that their astonishing acts are conducted without real magic. Expect a sprinkling of magic, love, and lots of talk about sweets. I’m also entertaining the idea of a possible Strange Luck sequel. Do You Have Any Advice For Aspiring Authors? It’s going to be difficult, it’s going to be trying, and in the end, it will be worth it when you finally hold your own book in your hands. Utilize the resources available to you and get input from your family and friends. The important thing to remember is not to give up and to follow your intuition.• Strange Luck is available on and wherever books are sold. 10

with Raymond James Financial Services, Inc.

y Dad, Dale Mitchell, and I opened our Raymond James office in Temple Terrace in 1988. Today Raymond James is a large national company, but at the time it was a relatively small Florida-based firm. We liked the fact that Raymond James had a client-focused, financial planning approach. Financial and investment planning should be about helping clients achieve their goals. Helping clients achieve their goals is what makes

my job rewarding. As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERTM professional and investment consultant, I’ve helped people plan for retirement, save for their children’s college education, develop a plan for the possibility of long-term care, and manage and structure their investment portfolios to meet their objectives whether it is growth or income. In 1993 my wife Kate and our children moved from south Tampa to Temple Terrace. Meghan, Trevor and Mallory all attended Temple Terrace schools, including Lewis Elementary, Terrace Community Middle School and King High School. We spent many hours watching them play soccer, volleyball and tennis. Kate was very involved in PTA while I served the

community through the Temple Terrace and the Tampa North Rotary clubs. It was also great fun to play acoustic guitar in the Temple Terrace United Methodist Church band. Living, working and raising a family in Temple Terrace has been a wonderful experience. But the only constant is change—true in life and investing. In November Kate and I relocated to Greenville, South Carolina to be closer to our children and our first grandchild. Mallory is at college in Virginia. Trevor works as a mechanical engineer in Greenville. And our daughter Meghan and her husband welcomed a baby boy into the family in February. Matt will start his residency in Augusta, GA which is where he went to medical school --we are thrilled to have them fairly close by. Recently I was elected to the board of the Financial Planning Association of South Carolina and I serve as secretary

of the organization. I opened a financial planning office in Greenville and I will continue to maintain an office in Temple Terrace as well. The transition has been pretty easy. I am only a phone call, email or skype away. Every two or three months I fly to Florida to meet with clients in Temple Terrace and Tampa and visit friends. I plan to continue helping clients achieve their financial goals for many years to come.• Jim Mitchell, CFP©, is an Investment Consultant and Branch Manager with Raymond James Financial Services, Inc., Member FINRA/SIPC with offices at 11808 N. 56th Street, Temple Terrace, FL 33617, 813 4170527 and 128 Millport Circle, Suite 200, Greenville, SC 29607, 864 315-1639.
