Lawn &

Garden

January Plantings & Lawn Maintenance

Plan to beautify your landscape with these tips for what to plant in JANUARY and lawn maintenance measures! Excerpts are taken from http://edis.ifas.ufl. edu courtesy of University of Florida IFAS Extension.

What to Plant Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include dianthus, pansy, petunia, viola, and snapdragon. Bulbs: Crinum, agapanthus, and gloriosa lily bulbs can be planted now. Provide a layer of mulch to protect from cold temperatures. Camellias: Select and plant camellias this month. Visit local nurseries now for the best selection of colors and forms.

What to Do

Cold protection: Be ready to cover tender plants to minimize damage and be sure covers extend all the way to the ground. Frost or freezes are likely this month and next. Irrigation: Irrigate lawns and landscape plants minimally. This is their dormant season. Shrubs and trees: Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form. Arbor Day: Celebrate Florida Arbor Day (the third Friday of January) by planting a tree in your yard or community. Crapemyrtle: Remove seed pods, crossing branches, and small twiggy growth to improve the appearance and form of the plant, if desired. Hard pruning is not required. Pests: Apply horticultural oil to citrus, shrubs, camellias, and deciduous fruit trees while plants are dormant to control scale.

What to Do Every Month • Adjust irrigation based on rainfall. • Prune off dead blooms and seeds to encourage new flowers. • Monitor for insects and disease.

Confused about Tax Return Changes?

• The IRS has tweaked income tax brackets for the new year, adjusting them for inflation. • The 2019 standard deduction will be $12,200 for singles and $24,400 for married couples who file jointly. Personal exemptions will remain at zero. • There will be no penalty for failure to maintain minimum essential health coverage in 2019. In 2018, the penalty was $695.

T

his year marks the first year under the new law, passed in 2017 as an overhaul of the tax code. The legislation resulted in lower individual income tax rates, a doubled standard deduction and the elimination of personal exemptions. For the new year, the IRS has bumped up the individual income tax brackets, adjusting them for inflation. The standard deduction has also increased for 2019, rising to $12,200 for single filers (up from $12,000 in 2018). Married joint filers will be eligible for a $24,400 standard deduction, an increase from $24,000 in 2018. Meanwhile, heads of household — that is, filers who are single parents — are getting a $350 boost to their standard deduction. It will be $18,350 in 2019. Personal exemptions, which were eliminated from 2018 through 2025 as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, will remain at zero.

Retirement contributions

If you’re putting money away in a retirement plan, you can save a little bit more in 2019. The IRS boosted the employee contribution limit for 401(k), 403(b) and most 457 plans to $19,000, reflecting an increase from $18,500. Savers age 50 and older can put away an additional $6,000. PALMS MAGAZINE

If you have an IRA, you can put away $6,000 in annual contributions in 2019. That’s up from $5,500. Catch-up contributions for savers age 50 and older remain at $1,000.

Insurance penalties

Filers should take note that in 2019, the IRS will do away with the individual mandate — the fine that people pay for failing to maintain qualifying health insurance coverage. On a per-person basis, this penalty added up to $695 per adult and $347 per child under age 18. Be aware that if you went without coverage in 2018, you’ll likely be subject to

the fine when you file your taxes in April 2019. There are a series of information forms you’ll need to complete your 2018 return and report your coverage status to the IRS: They are Form 1095-A (for coverage purchased in the marketplace), Form 1095-B (sent from insurers to covered individuals) and Form 1095-C (for health insurance offered at work).

Mortgage interest

The deduction for interest is capped at $750,000 for mortgage loan balances taken out after Dec. 15 of last year. The limit is still $1 million for mortgages that were established prior to Dec. 15, 2017.
