LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

Happy New Year!

With a fresh start to the year, we all have a chance to take aim at new lofty goals and make bold predictions about major change. While that is a great approach, those of you who know me, know that I am an “all or nothing” guy, and when you fall short of lofty goals well then you get “nothing”. Clearly that is not reality, but as we all know small changes are the way to go. Really that is the way to be most productive and successful in our lives. So my “resolution” is not to have lofty goals, but to make small changes in the way I live each day. I plan to be better in every aspect of my life, but to do so in small increments each day and as a whole, I will look back and be a better person for it. If you are looking to make Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club part of your 2016 plans, now is the time to come join us and get started on all the fun. Call the Club today and schedule an appointment with our new Membership Director, Karen Martin. Whatever your resolutions are, I wish you willpower, faith, and determination to reach your goals. Golf Tip of the Month

Should you chip or putt from just off the green? That depends on a number of things the first of which is your lie. If the lie is good you could chip or putt it and with proper technique have similar results. If the lie is bad a putter probably is the better choice just because your worst putt will generally be better than your worst chip. Another thing to take into consideration around the green is the amount of fringe you have to navigate before your ball gets to the green. In Bermuda grass the more fringe/rough you have to navigate the worse your odds become with a putter. The reason for this is the unpredictable bounces you will get from this type of grass when it is long. I have excellent chipping technique so given a good lie I ALWAYS chip or pitch the ball onto the green. By choosing this method I eliminate the effects of bad bounces. Work on your chipping and pitching so that you will have more options around the green. Kevin Kenny, PGA Head Professional Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club Page 8

Tennis

Volley with authority! Try a simple technique by placing a tennis ball in your armpit. The ball should stay in place while volleying. This will keep you from having to reach too far to volley. Try it a few times and not let the ball fall out. It is good practice to keep your volley compact and accurate. See you on the courts! Thomas Judson Head Tennis Professional Tampa Palms Golf & CC

established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate. Isshinryu Karate combines a wellrounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults.

What to Plant

Bedding Plants: Plants that can be added to the garden during the coolest months include dianthus, pansy, petunia, viola, and snapdragon. Bulbs: Crinum, agapanthus, and gloriosa lily bulbs can be planted now. Provide a layer of mulch for protection from cold temperatures. Camellias: Select and plant camellias this month. Visit local nurseries now for the best selection of colors and forms. Vegetables: Continue planting cool season crops including beet, cabbage, turnip, lettuce, potato, and broccoli.

What to Do

Deciduous fruit: Now is the time to plant deciduous fruit trees. This will give roots time to develop before the warm and dry spring months. Cold protection: Frost or freezes are likely this month and next. Be ready to cover tender plants to minimize damage and make sure covers extend all the way to the ground. Irrigation: Lawns and landscape plants are dormant and need minimal irrigation. Shrubs and Trees: Prune non-spring flowering shrubs and trees this month to improve form. Arbor Day: Florida observes Arbor Day on the 3rd Friday of January. To celebrate, plant a tree in your yard or community. Crapemyrtle: While crapemyrtles do not require pruning, removing seed pods, crossing branches and small twiggy growth improves the appearance and form of the plant. Pests: To control scale on citrus, shrubs, camellias, and deciduous fruit trees, apply horticultural oil while plants are dormant.

Rockaween Dance Party Raises $5,000 for Gulfside Hospice

The Lucas Magazine Community Foundation raised thousands of dollars at this year’s Rockaween Dance Party to support Gulfside Hospice and homeless veterans. The foundation presented a check to Gulfside Hospice for $5,000 from the event. Pictured left to right: Leah Kershner from Peck Jenkins Kershner CPAs, Marvelous Marvin from Hits 106, Yvette Behmer from the Lucas Magazine Community Foundation, Carla Armstrong from Gulfside Hospice and Drew Monte from Monte Designs.

More than 250 people danced the night away at this year’s Rockaween Dance Party and raised thousands of dollars to benefit Gulfside Hospice and homeless veterans. The fundraiser, hosted by the Law Offices of Lucas Magazine through the Lucas Magazine Community Foundation, was held Friday, Oct. 9 at Spartan Manor in New Port Richey. A check for $5,000 was presented to Gulfside in late November at the Hits 106 studio for the portion of the event funds raised for Gulfside Hospice. “We are so grateful to the Lucas Magazine Community Foundation and everyone involved in making this event so successful,” said Carla Armstrong, Director of Philanthropy for Gulfside. “You are truly making a difference in our community by supporting organizations like Gulfside. Your support allows us to continue to be there for our patients and families when they need us most.” The event was a fun-filled evening of lively costumes, delicious food, dancing with featured band The Spazmatics and a silent auction provided by Sunrise Auctions. Guests also enjoyed taking fun and spooky photos in a photo booth and were entertained by Marvelous Marvin from Hits 106 as the Event Emcee. In addition to supporting Gulfside Hospice, the event also raised funds to help homeless veterans. Event sponsors included the Florida Wellness and Rehab, Excel Medical Imaging, Seaside National Bank & Trust and Bright House Network. Gulfside Hospice, established as a nonprofit corporation in Pasco County in 1988 and initially licensed in 1989, serves more than 325 patients daily. Gulfside employs over 250 professionals and has more than 500 volunteers. Gulfside is the only hospice that serves Pasco County exclusively and was the first hospice in Pasco to receive The Joint Commission’s Seal of Approval Accreditation. For more information about Gulfside Hospice, call 800-5614883 or visit www.GHPPC.org.•

Ace for a Cure I by Joleen Ross, Sports Writers of America

f you are a fan of tennis, Avila was the place to be on Sunday December 6, 2015. Some of the best male tennis players in the United States came together to help raise money for a worthy cause. American tennis star, and local resident John Isner was the big attraction at Avila Golf and Counrty Club in Tampa. The 6th annual exhibition tennis event was a benefit for Freidreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA). This organization is dedicated to curing Freidreich’s Ataxia, which is a genetic, neurological disease that affects mobility, speech, vision and hearing. The charity event included a silent auction, a future stars exhibition, a collegiate exhibition tennis match between the USF Bulls and the St. Leo’s Lions.

Number 1 American tennis player, John Isner, played a singles set against 18 year old up and coming player Alexander Zverev. The match was very exciting and close, although it was clear that the score and the rules were not as important as the cause. A doubles match followed with Isner teaming with Thomas Blake. The opposing team of touring pros was Alex Kuznetsov and Tim Smyczek. They put on a great show for the crowd. The event was well attended and ran without a hiccup. Over a dozen people paid $100 each to take a turn against big John’s killer serve. Isner’s serve is known to be the best in the world. FARA has already raised $250,000 to help find a cure for this debilitating disease.•
