Summer is here, which means that lots of outdoor living in our hot Florida sun is in the forecast. This month I want to share 8 important things about sun exposure with you. 1. Clouds don’t protect you from the sun. You will burn even on cloudy days with 80% of the sun’s UV rays passing through the clouds. Make sure you apply sunscreen if you’re in the sun for more than 20 minutes, regardless of the weather. 2. Wear SPF and a hat whenever you are exposed to the sun. 3. Make sure that you use a broad-spectrum SPF, that protect you from both UVA and UVB radiation. (UVA rays cause your skin to age and UVB rays cause skin cancer.) 4. Cover all skin that

is exposed. Apply SPF before getting dressed to make sure every spot is covered. If your hair is short or pulled back, make sure that your neck, ears and the top of your head is covered with sun screen. 5. Waterproof and sweat proof are both misleading terms, everyone should reapply SPF after swimming and/or sweating while in the sun. 6. Perfume should be sprayed on your clothing and not on your skin. If the sun hits your perfume, it will cause irritation and hyperpigmentation (a discoloration of the skin). 7. Health conditions and prescription medications may make your more sensitive to the sun. Make sure that you check with your health care provider. 8. Wear sunglasses that both absorb and block 99-100% of UVA and UVB rays. Protecting your

The reason for that is once you know how to properly hit a bunker shot it is much easier than a shot from thick rough. The club you use in a bunker is immaterial as all you are doing is splashing sand out from underneath the ball. Any of your wedges should be able to hit a decent bunker shot with the correct technique. The correct technique involves placing the ball forward of your sternum while taking a wide stance with your feet sunk into the sand. You want to get the bottom of your feet below the bottom of the ball. Once in that position you want to feel as though you sit down at address with more knee flex than you would have on any other shot. Once in this position the proper swing path is a vertical one engaging your wrists to get the club up quickly and then splashing the club into the sand an inch or so behind the ball. You should complete your follow through with the back of your left hand (right handed golfers) and the clubface pointed to the sky. This will help insure that the ball comes out high and soft. The amount of effort required is dependent on the thickness of the sand and the distance to reach the green. Bunker shots that are not plugged should easily be gotten onto the green in most instances with this technique. Kevin Kenny PGA Head Professional Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club (813) 972-1444

The Pro Karate Center was established to promote good mental health, physical fitness, and self defense through the Okinawan style of karate, Isshinryu. Isshinryu’s main objective is the perfection of oneself through both physical and mental development. As students learn the art of self defense they acquire self-confidence, humility, and the ability to concentrate.

Isshinryu Karate combines a wellrounded exercise program with important advantages over other styles. At Pro Karate Center we understand the problems unique to youngsters, and concerns parents naturally have. This well organized, professionally planned children’s Isshinryu program is designed to help parents in the task of building a child’s self confidence, self discipline, positive outlook, and self esteem. They learn to take pride in themselves and their accomplishments. The Pro Karate Center offers a satellite program of classes right here at Tampa Palms Golf and Country Club. We feel our programs are the best the area has to offer featuring well– organized classes for children, teens, and adults. continued on page 10 Palms Magazine | August 2016

When hitting on the run, it’s more how you start than how you finish! This approach is crucial when running laterally. In tennis, great lateral movement doesn’t mean much if you are not prepared to hit the ball. Taking your racquet back early saves you time, ensures that you’ll hit the ball with proper technique and prevents you from rushing and overrunning the ball. It is also crucial for keeping you balanced and able to finish your shot in a productive way. Prepare and hit some winning shots!
