or the fourth year in a row, Interfaith Tampa Bay and Integral Church will host Tampa Bay Interfaith Week - an opportunity to see how the rest of your community celebrates the sacred in a casual, open, educational setting. This year’s theme is “I Am Your Neighbor.” During Interfaith Week, individuals and families are encouraged to visit the many churches, temples, mosques, meditation centers and spiritual communities across Tampa Bay to gain a better understanding of the people, values, beliefs, practices and cultures that make up our dynamic and vibrant region. Three components bring forth the placebo effect: (a) positive beliefs and expectations on the part of the patient; (b) positive beliefs and expectations on the part of the physician or health care professional; and (c) a good relationship between the two parties. Because of the heavily negative connotations of the very words “placebo effect, “ the term should be replaced by “remembered wellness.” Remembered wellness has been one of medicine’s most potent assets and it should not be belittled or ridiculed. study of older adults finds an individual’s awareness of aging is not as static as previously thought, and that day-to-day experiences and one’s attitude toward aging can affect an individual’s awareness of age-related change (AARC) -- and how that awareness affects one’s mood. “People tend to have an overall attitude toward aging, good or bad, but we wanted to know whether their awareness of their own aging -- or AARC -- fluctuated over time in response to their everyday experiences,” says Shevaun Neupert, an associate professor of psychology at North Carolina State University and lead author of a paper on the study. For the study, researchers enrolled 116 participants between the ages of 60 and 90. Each participant took a survey to establish baseline attitudes toward aging. For the following eight days, participants kept a log of daily stressors (such as having an argument), completed a daily evaluation of age-related experiences (such as “I am becoming wiser” or “I am more slow in my thinking”), and reported on their affect, or mood. “We found that people’s AARC, as reflected in their daily evaluations, varied significantly from day to day,” says Jennifer Bellingtier, a recent Ph.D. graduate from NC State and co-author of the paper. “We also found that people whose baseline attitudes toward aging were positive also tended to report more positive affect, or better moods.” “People with positive attitudes toward aging were also less likely to report ‘losses,’ or negative experiences, in their daily aging evaluations,” Neupert says. “However, when people with positive attitudes did report losses, it had a much more significant impact on their affect that day,” Neupert says. “In other words, negative aging experiences had a bigger adverse impact on mood for people who normally had a positive attitude about aging.” The study expands on previous work that found having a positive attitude about aging makes older adults more resilient when faced with stressful situations.

New research from Case Western Reserve University may help explain the extreme perspectives, on religion, politics and more, that seem increasingly prevalent in society. Two studies examine the personality characteristics that drive dogmatism in the religious and nonreligious. They show there are both similarities and important differences in what drives dogmatism in these two groups.

In both groups, higher critical reasoning skills were associated with lower levels of dogmatism. But these two groups diverge in how moral concern influences their dogmatic thinking. “It suggests that religious individuals may cling to certain beliefs, especially those which seem at odds with analytic reasoning, because those beliefs resonate with their moral sentiments,” said Jared Friedman, a PhD student in organizational behavior and co-author of the studies. “Emotional resonance helps religious people to feel more certain -- the more moral correctness they see in something, the more it affirms their thinking,” said Anthony Jack, associate professor of philosophy and co-author of the research. “In contrast, moral concerns make nonreligious people feel less certain.” This understanding may suggest a way to effectively communicate with the extremes, the researchers say. Appealing to a religious dogmatist’s sense of moral concern and to an anti-religious dogmatist’s unemotional logic may increase the chances of getting a message through -- or at least some consideration from them. Extreme positions While more empathy may sound desirable, untempered empathy can be dangerous, Jack said. “Terrorists, within their bubble, believe it’s a highly moral thing they’re doing. They believe they are righting wrongs and protecting something sacred.” In today’s politics, Jack said, “with all this talk about fake news, the Trump administration, by emotionally resonating with people, appeals to members of its base while ignoring facts.” Trump’s base includes a large percentage of self-declared religious men and women. feature At the other extreme, despite organizing their life around critical thinking, militant atheists, “may lack the insight to see anything positive about religion; they can only see that it contradicts their scientific, analytical thinking,” Jack said. The studies, based on surveys of more than 900 people, also found some similarities between religious and non-religious people. In both groups the most dogmatic are less adept at analytical thinking, and also less likely to look at issues from other’s perspectives. In the first study, 209 participants identified as Christian, 153 as nonreligious, nine Jewish, five Buddhist, four Hindu, one Muslim and 24 another religion. Each completed tests assessing dogmatism, empathetic concern, aspects of analytical reasoning, and prosocial intentions. The results showed religious participants as a whole had a higher level of dogmatism, empathetic concern and

prosocial intentions, while the nonreligious performed better on the measure of analytic reasoning. Decreasing empathy among the nonreligious corresponded to increasing dogmatism. The second study, which included 210 participants who identified as Christian, 202 nonreligious, 63 Hindu, 12 Buddhist, 11 Jewish, 10 Muslim and 19 other religions, repeated much of the first but added measures of perspective-taking and religious fundamentalism. The more rigid the individual, whether religious or not, the less likely he or she would consider the perspective of others. Religious fundamentalism was highly correlated with empathetic concern among the religious.

Two brain networks The researchers say the results of the surveys lend further support to their ear-

lier work showing people have two brain networks -- one for empathy and one for analytic thinking -- that are in tension with each other. In healthy people, their thought process cycles between the two, choosing the appropriate network for different issues they consider. But in the religious dogmatist’s mind, the empathetic network appears to dominate while in the nonreligious dogmatist’s mind, the analytic network appears to rule. While the studies examined how differences in worldview of the religious vs. the nonreligious influence dogmatism, the research is broadly applicable, the researchers say. Dogmatism applies to any core beliefs, from eating habits -- whether to be a vegan, vegetarian or omnivore -- to political opinions and beliefs about evolution and climate change. The authors hope this and further research will help improve the divide in opinions that seems increasingly prevalent.

PETERSBURG, FL. – St. Pete Art & Fashion Week (SPAFW) is a series of social events, art shows and runway fashion shows in St. Petersburg. This year, SPAFW is set to take place September 13th- 16th at unique venues throughout the city. The 2017 event will be Pop Art themed and feature displays by local artists and fashion designers. The St. Pete Festival of the Arts will once again support the Warehouse Arts District Association as its beneficiary. The nonprofit, WADA, has launched an innovative plan to expand and

It is becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious illnesses – including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer’s disease. We all know inflammation on the surface of the body as local redness, heat, swelling and pain. It is the cornerstone of the body’s healing response, bringing more nourishment and more immune activity to a site of injury or infection. But when inflammation persists or serves no purpose, it damages the body and causes illness. Stress, lack of exercise, genetic predisposition, and exposure to toxins (like secondhand tobacco smoke) can all contribute to such chronic inflammation, but dietary choices play a big role as well. Learning how specific foods influence the inflammatory process is the best strategy for containing it and reducing long-term disease risks. HEALTHY SWEETS How much: Sparingly Healthy choices: Unsweetened dried fruit, dark chocolate, fruit sorbet Why: Dark chocolate provides polyphenols with antioxidant activity. Choose dark chocolate with at least 70 percent pure cacao and have an ounce a few times a week. Fruit sorbet is a better option than other frozen desserts. RED WINE How much: Optional, no more than 1 to 2 glasses per day Healthy choices: Organic red wine Why: Red wine has beneficial antioxidant activity. If you eat eggs, choose omega-3-enriched eggs (from hens that are fed a flax-meal-enriched diet) or organic eggs from free-range chickens. COOKED ASIAN MUSHROOMS How much: Unlimited amounts Healthy choices: Shiitake, enokitake, maitake, oyster mushrooms (and wild mushrooms if available) Why: These mushrooms contain compounds that enhance immune function. WHOLE-SOY FOODS How much: 1 to 2 servings per day (one serving is equal to ½ cup tofu or tempeh, 1 cup soy milk, ½ cup cooked edamame, or 1 ounce of soynuts) Healthy choices: Tofu, tempeh, edamame, soynuts, soymilk Why: Soy foods contain isoflavones that have antioxidant activity and are protective against cancer. Choose whole-soy foods over fractionated foods like isolated soy-protein powders and imitation meats made with soy isolate. FISH AND SHELLFISH How much: 2 to 6 servings per week (one serving is equal to 4 ounces of fish or seafood) Healthy choices: Wild Alaskan salmon (especially sockeye), herring, sardines, and black cod (sablefish) Why: These fish are rich in omega-3 fats, which are strongly anti-inflammatory. If you choose not to eat fish, take a molecularly distilled fish-oil supplement that provides both EPA and DHA in a dose of 2 to 3 grams per day. HEALTHY FATS How much: 5 to 7 servings per day (one serving is equal to 1 teaspoon of oil, 2 walnuts, 1 tablespoon of flaxseed, 1 ounce of avocado) Healthy choices: For cooking, use extra-virgin olive oil and expeller-pressed grapeseed oil. Other sources of healthy fats include nuts (especially walnuts), avocados, and seeds, including hemp seeds and freshly ground flaxseed. Omega-3 fats are also found in cold-water fish, omega-3 enriched eggs, and whole-soy foods. y instant karmic “Aha” moment is still as vivid, clear and panoramic now as it was 30 years ago. This life-changing event, a huge cosmic 2x4, was my karmic metamorphosis from “the old me” to the “new me”. Karma can be explained by the natural universal laws of the Universe that apply to everyone. It is the law cause-and-effect. As the Bible says, “What ye sow, that also shall you reap,” Usually refers to carried over experiences. Somewhat like receiving just reward (positive or negative). It was 7:00 a.m. Dec 4, 1984. I was on my way to my yukky job as usual. I was stuck, once again, in traffic. Frustrated, I realized I was stuck

in life-period!! As I was wallowing in negative thought, filling up with selfpity, my victim-hood martyr persona took over. Feeling lost, alone, and doubtful, I realized I was frozen with fear in all areas and all relationships in my life. Isolation and emptiness kept me stuck in patterns of indecision and desperation. Feeling the irony of my “stuckness”, I tried to review my choices. Stay stuck behind the jerk in front of me. Maneuver around the slow poke beside me risking a fender-bender. Cut in front of the “man with an attitude” beside me and speed away. Or ignore all the jerks on the highway, turn left and get the heck out of there, which would put me way out of my way and late…again!!

Clearly, my life and my relationships were showing up for me again in unpleasant, difficult and unacceptable choices. None of the choices appeared to be good or even fairly OK. Then, as if the heavens opened up and replied to me; I was struck from above and from behind all at once! Inspiration from above, in the realization that the traffic situation was a mimic of my life’s choices-the message was “MAKE BETTER CHOICES”!. Collision from behind, as I was rear-ended by a very large pick-up truck. The message was “CHOOSE SOMETHING OR IT WILL BE CHOSEN FOR YOU”.!! Yes, life does gives us serendipitous, karmic collisions. A constant barrage of choices, moment by moment decisions shape our lives and our relationships. My karmic patterns had taught me to stay stuck or be forced into making decisions. My “aha” car collision/inspiration moment jolted me into a new reality. Even though it was a reality of desperation at the time, it did, indeed, turn my old karmic patterns around into new patterns which enhanced my life. The aftermath of my combination cosmic inspiration/car collision gave me plenty of opportunities. Not only did I have car damage but I also had body dam-

age. Dealing with the car repairs and medical insurance companies showed me how new choices created good relationships in order to be in my best interest. Definitely karmic clean-up for me with mechanics, medical problems, and insurance companies. At the same time, doctors and medical treatments gave me opportunities for new choices to create better relationships of understanding with the medical community. More karma clearing, more serendipitous experiences. My new healthy choices allowed me to first learn how to create healthy relationships with strangers. Through the ensuing months, I was constantly being given new situations to make new choices which resulted in new results. Finally, I got it! I can change my life by changing my choices which created happy relationships. My karmic bondage had finally been broken. By being aware of my choices and my old negative karmic patterns, I was able to leave behind old karmic patterns of relationships which no longer fit me or my perspective. By looking at the picture the

Universe gave me, searching for my karmic lessons, being willing to create positive choices, I released the old me. I was able to learn how to shift my entire my life around towards one of joy and happiness. Releasing our old relationship attitudes makes way for new and beneficial, loving relationships. We can find joy and compassion in our everyday experiences. When we are aware of each and every “picture” we are given in our daily lives, we see the lesson. We open the pathway for new and better relationships. That is when serendipity shows up, re-arranges things for us, and joy and happiness is created.

Thyself”. He understood that the internal examination of one’s being constitutes the highest spiritual quest. Ramana Maharshi, a famous Hindu sage, would repeat the question, “Who Am I” to himself. To others, he would ask, “Who Are You”? Notice, the question is NOT “who is God”, because it connotes Divine power being “outside” of oneself. This is a false sense separation, because the power of God is within. You are that Divine power. Because the external illusion of separateness is so powerful, the key is to turn away from it. The intention should be to commune and ultimately be at-one, or in union with Creator. The communing is an attempt to quiet one’s mind, and seemingly, to the novice meditator, one’s own thoughts manifest. What meditation accomplishes is to quiet distractions and discover answers that were being masked. It usually takes the meditator 15-20 minutes to drop to a deeper brainwave state of mind. This permits inspiration from the Universe to flow. The meditator can then ascertain the answers- because similar to sleep (Thomas Edison used naps for this reason); the thoughts originate from the deep theta brain wave level. This is the most intuitive awakened state for a person, which naturally occurs just prior to sleep or upon awakening. One method to solve problems is to go to a quiet area, remember the question (or read the question- this helps the brain communicate with the subconscious mind), stare at it with a clear mind, and then ask repeatedly, “What does this mean? Tell me what this means; What is the answer to the problem….” At one point the mind clears and totally relaxes. You will feel very calm and receptive to incoming information. n our journey towards spiritual understanding and growth, we all pass through stages. The realizations we had as children are often submerged by the beliefs of the world. It is the recovery from this fog and illusion, of the apparent world, that we realize that reality is not “out there” but in fact, is within each of us and that we are all One. In time we realize that a universal interconnectedness, otherwise known as oneness, exists in and among all things. We learn and know that we are not separate, but rather, all of humanity is one with All That Is. It is because we are one with the Creator, that all of humanity is one. Usually, the first thing we do in the morning is look into a physical mirror. The physical appearance fools us and even most spiritual individuals, into believing that (the body) is human reality. Beliefs such as this constitute a colossal mistake, leading to the sense of separation, aloneness, and disempowerment. In our mistaken belief, we assume that our body, mind and brain are the ultimate reality here on the Earth. Because we are, inseparable and individualized aspects of All That Is, the power that is everywhere, all-knowing, and all powerful, we can only be likewise. All of us should remember that we are timeless and divine. We are “at one”, at all times, with the Highest Father, the Divine Itself, protected and nurtured by All That Is. It is, incumbent, then, to remember and grow in that knowledge and spiritual power. Why? Because if we know who and what we are, we reach a higher spiritual understanding and awareness. This is why Pythagoras, the famous ancient philosopher and mathematician, in his famous school, had the words posted over the door” Know 18

Dental Health

laque or tartar development is the most common cause of dental disease in pets. Periodontal disease has been estimated to affect 90% of dogs and cats over two years of age, and it essentially starts with accumulation of dental plaque. Studies have shown that regularly brushing your pet’s teeth is the most efficient way to prevent accumulation of plaque. Train your pet to have its mouth handled before introducing the toothbrush. Wrap nylon, gauze or a wash cloth around your finger and gently wipe the gums. Make it rewarding and fun for your pet but be cautious, as even a familiar pet may bite! Cleaning applicators: Any soft-bristled nylon toothbrush can be used. Your veterinarian can provide special brushes or you can use the human kind. If the gums are infected, you may use cotton swabs soaked with medicated dental preparations. You can wrap gauze around your finger and use it to wipe the gums and teeth. In cases of a severely infected mouth, you may want to change toothbrushes at least weekly to prevent re-infection of your pet’s mouth. As an alternative, after using and rinsing the brush off with hot water, soak it in a mixture of chlorine solution prepared

by adding 2 drops of household liquid bleach to one cup of warm water. Soak the brush for at least one minute, then allow it to air dry until the next dental session. Brushing action should be directed at the gum line at the base of the teeth. Be gentle and offer a treat or praise at the end of the session. Once daily brushing is adequate and you only need to brush the outside of the teeth, not the inside. Dentifrices: Do not use baking soda or salt to brush your pet’s teeth. Your pet will swallow them and the added sodium can be harmful, especially if your pet has an existing cardiovascular condition. Several animal dental preparations are available through your veterinarian. These will help you do the best job with the least effort. Some of these include CET, Petzlife oral care gel, Maxiguard Gel, Nolvadent and Biotene solution. If your pet already has tartar accumulated on its teeth, an initial dental cleaning is often essential before starting a routine, home dental cleaning program. If you are unable to clean your pet’s teeth, the following chewing items will help reduce plaque: Nylafloss and Nylabone. he goal of spiritual growth is to become the best you can be. This process can be greatly accelerated when you learn to tune into and take advantage of the magical moments of serendipity. These are the special moments when life whispers important clues that have to do with you and your journey. When you pay attention to these clues you make progress at becoming content and successful in what you are doing. When you miss or ignore the clues you continue to loiter, move in the wrong direction or wander around aimlessly. You fail and remain unhappy. Below are some important moments of serendipity that offer valuable clues to help you become happier and more successful in your journey toward becoming the best you can be.

MAKING A TRANSFORMATION At some point in your life you will sense a nagging gap between who you are and who you want to be. When you have the courage to start exploring the shadows of this gap, you discover many little gaps making up this big one. If you are lucky an important transformation occurs that enables you to shift your focus from external things to internal ones. This transformation enables you to understand the futility of trying to control things and change others and see the wisdom of changing yourself and making real progress. This shift also helps you become acutely aware of the important distinction between what your mind thinks you want to what your soul knows you need. This is the beginning of your sorting through chaos in order to restore order in closing all the little gaps that keep you from being who you want to be. Who you want to be comes from all the clues that have been trying to tell you who you are meant to be.


DISCOVERING THE POWER OF CHOICE One of the most powerful moments of serendipity for many people is the one that allows them to slow down long enough to finally see the intimate connection between the choices they make and the consequences they get. Many times this important clue shows up as a déjà vu experience, where you get the vague notion that you finally need to get it right this time around. You may be running out of chances. This sudden Karma insight helps you uncover your true power in making choices each new moment. Time seems to stand still to allow you to make a difference in the future. Using this power to make the right choices from here on out is what can help you become who you want to be, closing one small gap at a time but feeling enormous satisfaction from immediate results. The difficulty in life is the choice.  

REMEMBERING YOUR CONTRACT One of the most deeply hidden secrets is why you are here. Some think that we each make a sacred contract to accomplish some unique purpose in exchange for the opportunity to live our lives. This notion is a difficult one to dismiss. It is just too intriguing, without any apparent downside. Genuine happiness, success and contentment do seem to elude us until we find out what our purpose is and then start making progress to fulfill it. That is one of those “connections” that are waiting to be discovered by serendipity. The clues to discovering this secret contract are extremely subtle and the hiding place may be the best of all- right under your nose. After all, the obscure takes a while to notice, while the obvious may take even longer. Of course there are lots of people trying to hand out clues, such as parents, teachers, family and friends. In a way it is a shame that we are convinced that we have to figure out everything all by ourselves. But there is another serendipity moment just waiting

to change that idea.

DISCOVERING YOUR GIFT Along with the idea that we each have a unique mission here in life, many feel we are also blessed with a special gift or talent for carrying out our mission effectively. Again, this notion is a difficult one to dismiss easily. It has many positive implications and no negative ones. We are all truly different from one another in regards to our abilities, knowledge, personalities, learning styles, characteristics, motivations, strengths and weaknesses. Somehow that gift may be hidden among those things. Until you take the time to see what it is you seem to do the best and enjoy the most, this talent may stay dormant. However, there are clues to help, just like with remembering your contract. We all have a tiny piece of the puzzle and when we start sharing our pieces with each other, we get a much bigger and clearer picture.

REALIZING MEANINGFUL COINCIDENCES This may be one of those hindsight realizations. I know it has been for me. The more I look back over my life, the more people I think about who were trying to tell me something important, but I didn’t always listen to their whispers. I was too busy creating chaos in trying to become who I wanted to be, on my own. Meaningful encounters with important other people with whom we have valuable information to exchange, happen all the time. They are not random or chance encounters. It is unfortunate when we miss these opportunities or mistake them for something else. The way to approach these moments is to follow your intuitive hunches. What have you got to lose? My own understanding of serendipity came from many reoccurring meaningful coincidences I have had. Sharing secrets and suspicions is a serendipitous way to close the gap between who you are and who you want to be.


The most important moment of serendipity for me was a humble realization about what little I actually knew compared to all that is available to know. I am also proud to say that all I think I know may not necessarily be so. This flash of humility set me free to become a student again and start learning what I don’t know in order to make progress at closing the gap in becoming who I want to be. Without the need to feel insecure or be defensive about the correctness of all my precious beliefs and knowledge, I can now ask questions to find out what I need to know. This openness also allows me to pay more attention to listening to all the clues offered by others during the frequent meaningful coincidences to which I am becoming more sensitive. Oddly, my piece of the puzzle seems to be getting bigger. Serendipity is a natural and graceful style of life. You are not really sure whether you are actually exercising your free will for the first time or finally just accepting your destiny. For some strange reason they both seem to be the same thing. This might be the ultimate moment of serendipity we are all searching for. RECONCILING OPPOSITES A particularly wonderful and awesome moment of serendipity is the instantaneous, profound understanding of the underlying unity of all illusory opposites. This is a truth that eludes us for what seems to be an eternity. Unfortunately, the two different sides of the same coin often happen so far apart in time or distance that you can’t see the connection. During much of the time we are stuck with 180-degree vision, so to speak. Many of us also have this strange obsession of focusing mostly on differences rather than similarities. The clues are there in the similarities though, we just aren’t looking close enough. Night does turn into day and good does emerge from the worst of tragedies. Putting things back together that we took apart earlier, is one of the gaps we need to close to feel the sense of “wholeness” we crave in making real progress in our journey.

You Can’t Outrun Your Microbes:

How Exercise Affects Your Gut By William B. Miller, Jr., M.D.


illions of Americans are serious about fitness since we have long been told of its benefits. It is well established that consistent exercise promotes long-term health by lowering blood pressure, improving glucose tolerance, and assisting in weight management. Most people who exercise report an additional positive; physical activity improves their mental outlook. Recent reports go even farther. Regular exercise may delay the onset of dementia for those who are prone. However, those are not the only systems that are affected. Modern research has documented many substantial changes that occur with exercise in our gut microbiome, which is being reshaped as a result of the metabolic changes that incur from regular moderate exercise. Exercise is associated with an increase in gut microbial diversity, which is associated with an improved metabolic profile and a strengthened immune system. This shift is believed to be the result of an increase in a particular bacterial strain, Bifidobacteria, that is essential for optimum health and whose levels tend to decline with age. Exercise provides a valuable boost to that population in our gut. Although the great majority of those who exercise do so in the moderate range, there are increasing numbers of recreational and elite performance athletes who engage in very high levels of physical exercise in order to enhance performance. Extreme exercise is associated with a number of challenges, including a 10-20% in increase in heart size and an increased potential for cardiac arrhythmias. More recent evidence suggests that there is also a general immune deficiency associated with prolonged exertion. In fact, it is common for elite athletes at the peak of training fitness during preparation for major sporting events to be prone to respiratory illnesses and a range of gastrointestinal symptoms. For example, it has been documented that among ultra-marathoners, there is an increased risk of upper respiratory tract infection during periods of heavy training and the 1-to 2-week period after marathon-type race event. Previously, it had been supposed that the depressed immune function coincident with strenuous exertion and heavy training was a by-product of dietary deficiencies in protein, carbohydrates or specific micro-nutrients. However, there is new evidence for a surprisingly different common denominator for this set of problems among endurance athletes is centered within the gut microbiome. Extreme exercise is associated with gut related immune deficiency from increased permeability of the intestinal cells that line our gut. This disruption leads to the common symptoms of nausea, bloating, cramping, pain, diarrhea, and even bleeding. Under the chronic stress of exercise-induced muscle fatigue and dehydration, the intestinal cells cannot sufficiently counteract and detoxify the free radicals that are being produced by extreme exertion. In these circumstances, some of the less desirable products of on-going gut microbial metabolism can cross the gut lining barrier, a condition known as endotoxemia. As a result, extreme endurance training has been shown to be associated with a rise in inflammatory markers in the body and a breakdown of gut integrity. These are known pathways towards chronic disease. Fortunately, there is a way to counteract these negative effects. A number of studies have suggested a benefit from prebiotic and probiotic supplements for serious recreational and elite athletes. For example, prebiotics, such as oligo-fructose enriched inulin, increase 30

the number of the beneficial Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillus in the colon. These bacteria protect against pathogens and antioxidants and also stimulate the immune system. A specific by-product of Bifidobacteria metabolism, butyrate, is an essential metabolite in our colon that helps maintain the energy supply of the body cells that line the colon and protects gut integrity. It is now known that increasing the proper microbes in your gut enhances these protective effects. The good news for recreational and endurance athletes is that there are convenient means to prevent the most common non-muscular complications of strenuous exercise. Certainly, the best advice for your optimum health is to exercise in moderation and support those efforts with a balanced and nutritious diet. But, if you insist on pushing towards even higher levels of athletic performance, part of your exercise regimen should include a daily supplement to boost your gut microbes, which are among your most important athletic partners.
