News Tampa YMCA Wins Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker

Approximately 3,347 Floridians log nearly 6,987 miles in event to encourage healthier lifestyles TAMPA, FL – (Mar. 27, 2018) – The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is pleased to announce its win in the Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker, a 3rd annual competition with the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast. In total, 1,979 Tampa Bay residents completed 4,185.95 miles during the 12-hour event, surpassing the First Coast by about 1,385.15 miles. For the First Coast, 1,368 residents logged 2,800.80 miles. Together, the Tampa YMCA and First Coast YMCA leveraged a friendly competition to inspire community members to become more physically active and adopt healthier lifestyles. “The remarkable turnout of the Treadmill Tuesday Tie-Breaker has once again demonstrated the importance of community involvement in improving Florida’s health and well-being,” said Tampa YMCA President & CEO Matt Mitchell. “While this year’s tie-breaker ended in our favor, both Y associations remain committed to strengthening the health of our communities.” In addition to participating at their neighborhood Y, community members were able to join the competition from other locations via social media. Of the 4,185.95 total Tampa Bay participants, 26 joined by uploading a post-workout photo of treadmill dashboard displaying the total distance on social media.

The Map of Consciousness found in the book Power vs Force, by Dr. David R. Hawkins depicts the vibrational calibrations of all human emotions. To the left are some examples of emotions that calibrate at lower vibrational rates. Unworthiness, Guilt, Regret, Jealousy, Anger and Fear. The flow of energy from any lower vibrational emotion is heavy, dense and resistant. Life can feel chaotic, you can feel powerless. #2. Foster Forgiveness -

Do you have a belief that some person, place or situation hurt or harmed you in anyway? Even if it has been years or you think you have forgiven, do you experience the energy of any emotion when you think or talk about this person, place or situation? If you do, chances are it is one of the lower vibrational emotions. When you make the decision to forgive, you are really doing it for you. You are the one who will benefit from releasing any stuck emotional energy you are carrying around inside you because of this person, place or situation. Forgiveness can only occur when you are ready to stop your own suffering. “The weak can never forgive, Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong” -Mahatma Gandy Take the time to forgive yourself and all those that you believe have harmed you in any way. Using a simple phrase like the following can help you release that stuck energy. I forgive you (insert person, place, situation here) and I release you now! Say this phrase out loud or in your

mind over and over again every time you find yourself thinking about the person, place or situation. Setting your intention to forgive and repeating the phrase will shift that stuck energy. Energy always moves with intention. The goal is when you have a thought about the person, place or situation you will not feel the anger, resentment, hurt or other lower vibrational stuck emotion. That is when you know you have truly forgiven. That is when you find acceptance and even understanding instead.

#3. Practice Presence We have so many distractions all day that we often forget how simple it is to practice being present. You can do this at any time from just about any place. When you are ready, bring your awareness to the current moment. Take a deep breath, and as you exhale use your senses to experience the moment. What do you Feel, See, Smell, Taste or Hear? There is nothing you need to do, just notice. Notice

the thoughts that come through too. Label them past or future and let them go. Build the amount of time you Practice Presence every day. Notice what it feels like to shift your own energy when doing so. You are so much more powerful than you know. It takes Courage to Re-align the Heart and Soul to Peace. When one does so, one eventually realizes “I am the One I have Been Waiting For”.

C

ourage is the strength that comes from deep within. The strength that comes from the authenticity, to speak your truth, follow your path or to stand up for yourself. It is a knowing of whom you are and a force that guides you to be true to yourself without fear. The strength in the face of pain, grief or struggle that helps you to find courage. Courage is knowable, it is a soft spoken voice within you and at times it is hidden. Courage is not touchable but it is felt, it leaves an impression that others either look up to or envy. It is an inspiring and motivating example. Courage is not a way out but a way forward, it can create change that will alter your life forever. Having courage helps you to look at things through fearless eyes and helps you to gain faith. To have faith even as small as a mustard seed can help you make great shifts in your life. When you live or strive to live a life of courage, the big things seem to fade away and everything becomes small simple things that are easier to breakthrough, you feel like Goliath ready to take on whatever comes your way. Having the courage to admit mistakes, mend relationships, change daily habits, etc. isn’t always easy to do but one bite at a time, stronger every day we can all do it and see that it wasn’t so bad after all, therefore we can continue to do what we fear. Feel the fear and do it anyway, muster up that courage to go a little further everyday closer to the person that you envision yourself becoming. Are you ready to be courageous? What would that look like for you? How do you see yourself in the future? What are you not gutsy enough to do today that you wish you could? If you don’t do it, what’s the alternative? What are the consequences? Imagine yourself doing that and even practice, practice speaking to the person that you are afraid to speak to, imagine that person accepting you. See it all working out with both parties coming to an agreement in peace and harmony,

this could even be a job interview. See yourself getting the job that you want or the raise that you are looking for, have the courage to ask for your needs to be met. Also have the courage to put up boundaries for healthier relationships. Know your strengths and work on your weaknesses for more balance. Have the courage to create a better life, to do what it takes to see daily progress. Know that it is your own thoughts that prevent you from being courageous enough to take the next step to create your dream life. Unconsciously the fear gets in the way, even when we think that we are strong enough a thought will creep up from something that happened many years ago, this will start a dialogue that creates a fear within that is at times paralyzing, most people are able to push through it and create a more positive and exciting experience for themselves. They create a new paradigm of courage to carry on and try it anyway that is bravery. We all have the power within to be and create what we want, often we are our biggest enemy. Are you ready to lead your life with courage to be you and only you, to speak up instead of holding it in, to put up boundaries when needed , to be daring and to leave other people’s APRIL 2018

WHAT’S YOUR

R

ecently I hosted a vision board party at my house. About 20 women showed up with scissors in hand ready to seek words and pictures that represent what they want to see manifest in their life this year. They brought their creativity and their dreams. They started skimming through magazines, looking for words and pictures that spoke to them. These inspirations were cut out and set aside to eventually be glued onto their vision boards. If you’re not familiar with a vision board it is one of the most valuable visualization tools available to you. The inspirational board helps serve several purposes including: • identifying your vision for the year and giving it clarity • reinforcing your daily affirmations • keeping your attention on your intentions As I walked around my house I was in awe of the visions, essentially goals and dreams, of these women. Some had pictures of closets and kitchens, anticipating a remodel this year. Some had pictures of Louis Vuitton purses and Bvlgari rings planning to make enough money this year to afford some designer pieces. Others had pictures of travel – specific places they are already scheduled to go as well as places they desire to go. Most boards had pictures of food and the words “eat healthy” or something of the sort near it. Every board had personal affirmations and words or phrases of encouragement and inspiration. Another common theme across 16

all boards were things relating to kids and family. It was so cool to see everyones creativity and how their personality came across on their board. The purpose of a vision board is to lay out your goals and dreams for the year. It’s intended to help you manifest the things you want in your life or how you want to feel through visualization. When completed it should be hung in an area where you will see it often. Mine is hung in my office so I catch quite a few glimpses of it daily. I am constantly reminded of what I want my life to look like this year. Essentially, what I want to focus on, where I want to travel and what I plan to do when I get there. Last year my board focused mainly on giving, inspiring and empowering women. This year my board is centrally themed around traveling and taking more time to relax and be more present. I’m not a New Years resolution type of girl. Never have been and never will be. Most people don’t follow through on their resolutions anyway so why waste time making them? Instead, create a picture of your life for the year. Close your eyes. Come on, try it! Envision your life. Envision how you want it to look. Envision how you want to feel. Envision where you want to go. Envision your relationships. As you skim through magazines, words and pictures will jump out at you that fit this image you just dreamed for your life. If you’re like me you’ll cut out enough

words and pictures to fit on three boards and will have to whittle it down to one. Supplies needed to create a vision board: Foam Board Scissors Glue stick Magazines That’s it. Four things. And the first three you can buy at the Dollar Store. When I hosted my party, I supplied the materials and asked everyone to bring any magazines they had laying around. I highly suggest you host a party. It’s a great opportunity for people to get ideas from others as well as make new friends. Many people at my party had never previously met so I loved bringing these women together to connect, dream and establish new friendships. Vision boards are an amazing tool that help manifest things in your life through visualization. It’s amazing how once you start creating your board everything just flows together. THEME - Courage

Don’t Fear Failure. Don’t Pursue Failure. Don’t Accept Failure. Expect Failure.

ver the past year, I have become fascinated with meta cognition; why and how certain people succeed, why people are happier than others and what makes people exude confidence. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradbury and Jean Greaves is well referenced in many corporate climates and I highly recommend delving into it if you get a chance. Some of the strategies mentioned are common sense, some are common knowledge and some really made me think. The first few pages in particular struck me as the authors emphasized that emotional intelligence far outweighs IQ in determining success. How we deal with stress, or more, how we react to stress, reveals a lot about our

18

emotional intelligence. Those of us who are able to respond calmly and productively are often the envy of the rest of us. People who are able to sedate emotional ‘gut’ reactions are able to act more rationally as their responses are void (or minimally tinged) of emotion. Such people are often referred to as ‘cold’ or stand-offish as we are conditioned to believe that every action of ours is influenced by some level of emotional charge. Stress rears its head in many forms, and not all stress is bad. Stress can provide motivation, a sense of urgency almost, to accomplish a task or meet a deadline. Equally, putting our bodies under stress in the gym is what stimulates muscle and strength growth. APRIL 2018

Despite some positive benefits of stress, your immediate reaction to hearing that word probably conjures up an array of negative connotations. The word ‘stress’ is often used to describe chaos, disarray, and excessive workload, communicating a need of some relief. So what causes stress? Pressure. Expectation. Longing. It can be self-imposed or can be the result of external influences. These three triggers share the same negative consequence - failure. Failure to succeed. Failure to deliver. Failure to please. By fearing failure, you are inducing additional stress to whatever task you are undertaking. Tampa Bay Wellness


Why are you FEARING FAILURE? If the likelihood of you failing is infinitely greater than the likelihood of you succeeding, is it a task that needs to be completed? Doing something that scares you is gratifying and liberating, but doing something where you are constantly fearing failure is the opposite. Equally as energy zapping is pursuing failure. It is a slippery slope, but convincing yourself that you are going to fail does nothing for you, your self-esteem nor for the task that you are trying to achieve. Approaching events with a pessimistic attitude adds additional stress to an already intense situation. So how about approaching situations expecting failure? How about establishing a plan to proactively move forward with failure? Doing this will provide a safety net, a cushion, with an objective plan for when you fail. Now, this doesn’t mean that you will fail, but it does mean you are prepared for if you do. Having this reassurance can not only help you feel more comfortable and confident with what you are trying to achieve, but it can also make you realize that, actually, this task or pressure, wasn’t so stressful after all. We are a couple of months into the new year and approaching the most depressing time of the year. Chances are New Year’s Resolutions are wavering, and, despite best intentions, the ‘new year, new you’ hasn’t really materialized. You may be feeling stressed. You haven’t been to the gym like you said you would. You

haven’t avoided the Christmas chocolates, (despite moving them into a high cupboard!) You haven’t even opened the book you were determined to be midway through by now. If, however, you made these New Year’s Resolutions with the intention to fail, you probably would have contingency plans set in place, ready for said failure. It isn’t too late! (It’s never too late!) Now you have come to the realization that you are expecting failure, you can make a plan to proactively bounce back. Don’t accept that you have failed. By doing that you are making no progress, either in terms of achieving your goal or in terms of altering your mind set. Sedate those gut reactions, improve your emotional intelligence, expect to fail...and watch yourself succeed.

Talking to Children About Violence:

Tips for Parents and Teachers

H

igh profile acts of violence, particularly in schools, can confuse and frighten children who may feel in danger or worry that their friends or loved-ones are at risk. They will look to adults for information and guidance on how to react. Parents and school personnel can help children feel safe by establishing a sense of normalcy and security and talking with them about their fears. Reassure children that they are safe. Emphasize that schools are very safe. Validate their feelings. Explain that all feelings are okay when a tragedy occurs. Let children talk about their feelings, help put them into perspective, and assist them in expressing these feelings appropriately. Make time to talk. Let their questions be your guide as to how much information to provide. Be patient; children and youth do not always talk about their feelings readily. Watch for clues that they may want to talk, such as hovering around while you do the dishes or yard work. Some children prefer writing, playing music, or doing an art project as an outlet. Young children may need concrete activities (such as drawing, looking at picture books, or imaginative play) to help them identify and express their feelings. Keep your explanations developmentally appropriate. Early elementary school children need brief, simple information that should be balanced with reassurances 20

that their school and homes are safe and that adults are there to protect them. Give simple examples of school safety like reminding children about exterior doors being locked, child monitoring efforts on the playground, and emergency drills practiced during the school day. Upper elementary and early middle school children will be more vocal in asking questions about whether they truly are safe and what is being done at their school. They may need assistance separating reality from fantasy. Discuss efforts of school and community leaders to provide safe schools.Upper middle school and high school students will have strong and varying opinions about the causes of violence in schools and society. They will share concrete suggestions about how to make school safer and how to prevent tragedies in society. Emphasize the role that students have in maintaining safe schools by following school safety guidelines (e.g. not providing building access to strangers, reporting strangers on campus, reporting threats to the school safety made by students or community members, etc.), communicating any personal safety concerns to school administrators, and accessing support for emotional needs. Review safety procedures. This should include procedures and safeguards at school and at home. Help children identify at least one adult at school and in the community to whom they go if they feel APRIL 2018

threatened or at risk. Observe children’s emotional state. Some children may not express their concerns verbally. Changes in behavior, appetite, and sleep patterns can also indicate a child’s level of anxiety or discomfort. In most children, these symptoms will ease with reassurance and time. However, some children may be at risk for more intense reactions. Children who have had a past traumatic experience or personal loss, suffer from depression or other mental illness, or with special needs may be at greater risk for severe reactions than others. Seek the help of mental health professional if you are at all concerned.Limit television viewing of these events. Limit television viewing and be aware if the television is on in common areas. Developmentally inappropriate information can cause anxiety or confusion, particularly in young children. Adults also need to be mindful of the content of conversations that they have with each other in front of children, even teenagers, and limit their exposure to vengeful, hateful, and angry comments that might be misunderstood. Maintain a normal routine. Keeping to a regular schedule can be reassuring and promote physical health. Ensure that children get plenty of sleep, regular meals, and exercise. Encourage them to keep up with their schoolwork and extracurricular activities but don’t push them if they seem overwhelmed. Tampa Bay Wellness

arth Day Network, the organization that leads Earth Day worldwide on April 22, today announced that Earth Day 2018 will focus on mobilizing the world to End Plastic Pollution, including creating support for a global effort to eliminate single use plastics along with uniform regulation for the disposal of plastics. EDN will educate millions of people about the health and other risks associated with the use and disposal of plastics, including pollution of our oceans, water, and wildlife, and about the growing body of evidence that decomposing plastics are creating serious global health problems. From poisoning and injuring marine life to the ubiquitous presence of plastics in our food to disrupting human hormones and causing major life-threatening diseases and early puberty, the exponential growth of plastics is threatening our planet’s

survival. EDN has built a multi-year campaign to End Plastic Pollution. Our goals include ending single use plastics, promoting alternatives to fossil fuel-based materials, promoting 100 percent recycling of plastics, corporate and government accountability and changing human behavior concerning plastics. “There is a growing tidal wave of interest in ending plastic pollution and some countries and governments are already in the vanguard. s a child I would look at the stars in the sky and feel overwhelmed by the vastness of space. And when I would think about timelessness, it seemed simply mind-boggling. Even now, and especially after having lived a lifetime in a constant relationship with the clock and the calendar, I realize how we, as busy adults, seldom let go of that vigilant connection. As a result, even trying to assimilate such a concept seems quite humbling. Our range of understanding of time may be only to grasp an awareness as it pertains to our lives. would have an eternal afterlife. I remember closing my eyes and trying so hard to imagine something without an end… going on and on and on and on…forever. It left me feeling quite humbled to say the least. Relative to that unfathomable vastness, I felt like less than a speck, as I would imagine most people feel when trying to conceive of something so far outside of themselves, regardless of their religious or spiritual beliefs. And now, as an adult, I am living with the comfort of knowing my journey is simply a part of that incomprehensible eternity, and I don’t need to conceptualize it. My being present in the moment is all I need to find my peace. I know that when I am fully present in the now of all eternity, the “next now” will follow. I am finally able to recognize when I’m not letting go of the past, or when I am absorbed into fears of the future. Not feeling peace is my flag for shifting my perception back to my connection with Source. And that letting go is a miracle for me. I remind myself that the past has happened, and that it can simply serve as information as I plan my future. And as for the preparing and planning for my future, that does serve me as a productive activity in the present moment. However, the worry and anxiety does not. So now, whenever I want to eliminate any negative emotions, I remember that my eternal soul is on a beautiful continuum of moments, all enriching my journey, and I have my peace back. In A Course of Miracles, it is explained that it is our ego that believes we are separate from Source. Our beliefs then create those negative emotions as we feel challenged by the issues that manifest as a result. It is our egos that create thoughts of a finite world, of finite time, and finite resources blocking the natural Love that is our true timeless connectedness. A Course in Miracles teaches us that the thoughts of scarcity, negativity, and suffering are truly illusions that take away the peace we all seek. In the end, eternity can be most simply understood as being in a stream of continuous “now moments” … one after the other after the other … with no need to understand it any more than that in order to have happiness.

What is causing my dog’s allergies? Let food heal them

We’ve seen many dogs with allergy symptoms like yeast infections, swollen paw pads, rashes, and runny eyes. After years of research and speaking with several vets, food seems to be the main cause of irritation for many canines.

Now finding nutritious chow is the tricky part. Dog food producers, like producers of human food, often use ambiguous terms like “natural” and “healthy” to draw your attention. So the first step when in search of dog food is skipping all the fancy labels on the front and looking at the nutrition panel. Studies have shown that certain ingredients more commonly cause allergies. Here’s a list of the worst: That’s right, BEEF! Not only are these the most common allergycausing ingredients, they’re also the most commonly used in inexpensive, corn-based dog foods found on store shelves. Did you know that animal protein, while a good source of essential nutrients, should only make up about 10 percent of your dog’s diet? So don’t be deceived by brands that offer beef, chicken, and lamb as the first ingredients or number one protein source. Unlike cats, dogs are omnivores. Which means they can survive on a balanced, diverse plant and/or animal diet. After searching years for a nutrient-packed, plant-based dog food, I stumbled on author and farm advocate Gene Baur’s recommendation of V-Dog. All four of my dogs (Nina the 4 year-old Doberman, Odie the 10 year-old Toy Schnauzer, Jolene the 3 year-old mixed breed, and my foster Hercules the 13 year-old Miniature Pincher) love V-Dog. To keep the food interesting for my dogs, I’ll often add farm fresh eggs from my chickens (with the shell), or sautéed spinach with garlic in coconut oil or veggies and fruits like apples, carrots, asparagus, Brussels sprouts, and sweet potatoes. How to Tell if Your Cat is in Pain --C

ats often disguise the fact they are in pain. That may be because in the wild, cats that appear sick or injured are vulnerable to predators. Cat pain can be caused by such things as arthritis, dental problems, urinary tract infections, bone disease and cancer. Pain is also common following a surgical procedure. You are in the best position to look for the subtle changes in behavior that may indicate your cat is suffering. It’s important to stay alert, because the sooner your cat’s pain is diagnosed and treated, the sooner he or she can heal and resume a normal, happy life. If your cat exhibits one or more of these behaviors and you suspect it may be due to pain, notify your veterinarian immediately. Dancing With Courage and Release Your Story!

C

ourage gives a person the ability and willingness to confront fear, pain, danger uncertainty and intimidation. Courage can take form moving through life’s hardship as well as positive occurrences. Real courage is the ability to know the real you, the authentic you. Courage knows the difference between right and wrong and acts knowing the truth in the face of fear, opposition shame guilt, scandal or discouragement. Courage enables you to follow your heart. You have the courage to be authentic and tell the truth no matter what the cost. Courage is bravery that impacts life in many ways. Courage is a guide to move through difficulty, change, challenge despite fear. Difficulty arises in life and can bring up fear. Fear impacts who we are in many ways and on different levels. Fear can inhibit speaking the truth and self-expression. Self expression comes in a variety of forms such as body movements, creativity, language, gestures, and eye movements. A deeper beingness in your heart is also a form of communication. The courage to be your authentic self means being in your heart. The awareness of what you are being in the moment is experienced in your body. The past can trigger stories, events, thoughts, feelings and emotions. Stories are powerful because once we realize we created a story about a life event, we can change it. Human beings communicate in the world of story. We enjoy sharing our history and life events and telling a story– our story. Stories are about ourselves Stories shield and protect us from being our authentic self. Here is how the story goes: Life events happen, we have a unique perception, interpretation and personal meaning. Knowing the truth is awareness discerning between the story and the event. This knowledge sets you free! You can dance with courage even when your heart is racing, and fear is in your face. You can be okay with responses and reactions of yourself and others. Being open and soft in your heart is responding and closing. Reacting is when you feel your heart being closed, tight and hard. Dance with the hand of courage and let it guide you to be the real you. Courage leads the way as it dances with fear. And, you move beyond it! The formation of fear comes when you believe your conclusions. Fears do not come from anything we know that truth of. Enjoy the being in courage deep in your heart. As soon as you move in the honesty and truth of what you know, fear disappears and goodness and love appears.

Suggestions to dance with the courage and release your story: Honesty:

Be honest and truthful. Let you heart guide you to heart of the matter and what you know the truth of about a situation.

Be Okay:

Look inside your heart for the deepest knowing. Know that everything is okay exactly the way it is. What are you okay with in the face of fear?

Clarity:

Let clarity speak and undo confusion. Be clear about what you know in your heart. What thoughts, feelings & emotions are coming up for you about releasing your story?

Power:

The only power fear has is the one you give it! Whatever you give energy to, grows. For example, the more you worry or dwell or talk about a situation, the bigger it gets. What are you giving your energy to with fear?

Past:

Where does this fear come from? What life event triggered the fear or event in your body from the past? Your body holds the past. Listen to your body.

Let Go:

Quietly take a deep breath, relax your body, relax your heart and be in it. Release and refresh. Let fear move through you. Evolve with grace and ease in your heart. Renew into a new you!

Courage:

Dance with courage. Be open and soft as you flow and move in the truth of what you know. Flow with grace and ease. How can you be courageous? Let courage help you to release your story and move forward.

Goodness:

Know that every experience has a golden nugget of goodness, love and truth within it!

How to Talk to Your Doctor About Postpartum Depression By Natalie Noa

O

ne of the common threads I hear from moms who’ve experienced postpartum depression is the utter frustration and disappointment they felt after speaking with their doctors about their concerns. Whether doctors ignored, minimized, or failed to sympathize with their symptoms, lots of moms left their doctors feeling worse than when they went in, including me. This is a huge problem! In the midst of postpartum depression, anxiety, or OCD, you feel so ashamed. You may be embarrassed and guilty for feeling the way you do when you’re “supposed” to be feeling joy and gratitude. One of the absolute hardest parts about dealing with postpartum depression and anxiety is simply speaking up. It is so difficult to get to a place where you can say, “I am not okay.” When a momma finally musters up that courage, when she takes that huge step to reach out, she should not be met with skepticism, nonchalance, or disregard.

Taking Control of Your Health

One of my long-term goals is to work on this disconnect in health care, to help women find the compassion, understanding, and resources they deserve when they face the fear of speaking to their health care providers. But before major shifts like that take place, it’s up to us to take control of our own health. We do not have to accept half answers, mumbled responses, and distracted conversations. We must be intentional about being heard when we are speaking to those responsible for guiding our health care choices. Contrary to my lifelong perception of doctor appointments, the patient is in charge, not the provider. Before you speak to your doctor (or when you make a second appointment because the first one was so shockingly useless): Make a list of your main three concerns: I am not bonding with my baby, I cannot be separated from my baby without being overcome by fear, I think I have postpartum depression, I think I am having panic attacks, or whatever your most seri30

ous symptoms are. Believe these are SYMPTOMS, not side effects of motherhood. No one knows you like you do. If you feel like there is a problem, be very clear with your doctor that something is not right. These feelings are serious, persistent, and interfering with your life.

How to Speak so Your Doctor Will Listen

Studies have shown that doctors let patients speak for just 23 seconds before interrupting them. TWENTY-THREE SECONDS. I can’t explain what I had for dinner last night in 23 seconds, much less my entire mental health history. You have to tell your doctor what you want them to hear. You can’t say, “Oh you know, it’s hard,” and expect your provider to know that means, “I am drowning!”

• Begin with a joke or ask your doctor how their day is going. They are people, too! • Wait or ask for their attention. If they are on the computer or taking notes unrelated to your visit, don’t speak until they are focused on you.

Ask the doctor to repeat or explain anything you don’t understand. • Demand resources. I am a believer that you should leave your doctor with a referral to a psychiatrist. You don’t have to use it, but at least you’ll have it if you need it or if your insurance requires it. Ask if the office has a list of support groups or counseling centers. • Find a different doctor if you need to. If you always feel rushed or ignored, it’s time to move on. Ask your friends for recommendations. I know you feel weak and defeated, but taking the step to ask for help is overwhelming proof that you are brave and powerful and working your way towards healing. Don’t let a disappointing doctor appointment take that away from you.

• Be honest. Be real. Be raw. Don’t be afraid to cry. If this is the worst experience of your life, tell them. If you don’t think you can be a mom for one more day, tell them. Doctors can only treat problems they know exist. • Say the scary words: I think I have postpartum depression. I think I have postpartum anxiety. I think I have OCD. Or I don’t know what this is, but I know something’s not right. • Take someone with you who will help direct the conversation -- a spouse, close friend, a parent -- and have insights about your mood and behavior from a different vantage point. • Ask questions and take notes. What can I do immediately to help alleviate these APRIL 2018
