The Ozone then penetrates the blood, lymph and fat. By allowing Ozone in, and toxins out, via the sweating process that is induced, Transdermal Ozone Therapy is one of the most powerful methods of detoxifying and oxygenating the body in existence. This accounts for the effect that heat stress has in killing cancer. Both heat stress and Ozone kill cancer so this treatment offers the best

Transdermal Ozone, also known as Hyperthermic Ozone and Transcutaneous Ozone Therapy, is a method in which Ozone is introduced into the body via the skin while sitting in a hot steam cabinet. As the pores of the skin open as a result of being surrounded by the warm steam, Ozone enters the body transdermally (i.e. via the skin).

could this happen to me? I eat 90% organic. I consume no sugar. I have an active life style. I am doing everything right. Of course, 50 years of smoking cigars might have a great deal to do with it. Yes, I quit 15 years ago, but the damage had already been done. The slow build up of symptoms didn’t alert me to my situation until I had achieved a stage four squamous cell carcinoma at the base of my tongue. The tumor was so aggressive it grew out of the side of my throat.

newsbriefs Think twice, no, three times about using a tanning bed. Tanning beds have created global legislation. Agencies in countries all over the world, to include the US, recognize these devices as carcinogenic to humans. Look back at the history of cigarettes. The path of research and action taken has led to confirmation that effects can be harmful and potentially deadly, increased taxation, mandatory warning labels and a minimum age law for purchasing. The tanning bed industry is following in the exact footsteps. For example, effective September 1st, Texas implemented a ban on minors tanning indoors. Texas Senator Sylvia Garcia recently stated, “You have to take steps to make sure you provide for the public safety. Drinking, smoking, there are a number of other areas where you want to make sure people know the potential health risks and I think that is a good reason for us to step in.” Mayo Clinic staff suggests sunless tanning products to achieve a sun-kissed glow without exposing your skin to harmful ultraviolet rays. Spray tanning is UV-free and has advanced in technology, quality and ingredients. Natural and organic based spray tanning solutions now exist. The two most common methods of spray tanning are performed by a technician, for the most detailed application, or via an automated machine. The newest technology available for automated spray tan machines is the Versa PRO by Sunless Inc. Versa PRO has the ability to be programmed more than fifty different ways for sunless treatment options. A spray tan has more benefits and purposes than achieving a deep, dark tan. A little color goes a long way by evening out skin tones, blending in tan lines, improving the appearance of skin conditions (vitiligo and varicose veins) and helping to hide cellulite. Avoid skin cancer, wrinkles and infections by opting for a spray tan. You Glow Spray Tan South Tampa and Lutz/Wesley Chapel are dedicated to the health and quality of spray tanning. Gratitude for Kids Young children are totally open to the world and all that is around them. When families pause before eating to say a short grace they are modeling for children the importance of taking time to express gratitude. It is what sets us apart from the animal world. A very beautiful verse that expresses this gratitude in a non-sectarian way is called “The Silver Rain”: The silver rain, the shining sun and fields where scarlett poppies run And all the ripples in the wheat Are in the bread that I do eat So when I sit at every meal and say a grace, I always feel That I am eating rain and sun and fields where scarlett poppies run Barbara Bedingfield, Founding Director Suncoast Waldorf School

By Kristin Keough, PsyD, CAP As Thanksgiving approaches, we often begin to adopt an attitude of gratitude. An attitude of gratitude, however, does not need to be reserved for just a holiday, but can become a daily observance. The more we focus on the positives in our lives the happier we feel. We can be grateful for the people in our lives, the successes we have attained, the money we have acquired, or just for the small positives we encounter every day. Brain imaging has shown that when we think of positive things we release Serotonin the happy chemical. Just by being consciously aware of the good things in our lives we can begin to change our physiology. It is often easy for us to see the negatives that happen to us throughout our day because the pain we feel is more memorable. If we, however, make a conscious effort every day to find the positives, we will find that we feel happier and more fulfilled. Positive things can come in all shapes and sizes and include the mundane, such as making that green light that allowed you to be to work on time. By being grateful for even the simplest pleasures, the easier it is to let go of things that cause us pain. A great exercise to increase your attitude of gratitude is to list all of the things you were grateful for during the day. If you do this exercise before bed, you reduce cortisol, the stress hormone, making it easier to sleep and feeling happier when you wake up in the morning. You can be more general in your gratitude such as being grateful that you have a job or for your family, or you can be more specific such as being grateful for a compliment you received that day or that you had a good laugh with a coworker. By acknowledging the goods things in your life, your job, your marriage, etc‌ the more appreciative you will become and will improve your overall quality of life. Therefore, every day can be a day of thanks. Dr. Kristin Keough is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist and Certified Addiction Professional. She works for Transformational Growth in a private practice setting in South Tampa. She provides Individual Therapy and Life Coaching. Gratitude by Anna Namaste

ratitude is part of many spiritual practices. Most of us have had experiences of being deeply thankful for something or someone in our lives. Some people make gratitude a practice, like a friend of mine who lists what he’s grateful for and posts it on Facebook daily. Usually the things we give thanks for would fall into the “Good” category: a vacation, getting a new job, being in a happy, loving relationship or vibrant health. It’s pretty easy to feel gratitude for those kinds of things, right? But what I have discovered, both in my personal practice and in my work with my clients, is that it’s just as important to be thankful when life is hard or to be grateful when we get the cosmic 2x4 to the head. You may be thinking “why would I be thankful

for suffering?”. For me, the answer is I trust that Spirit (God, Universe, Divine, use whatever word works with your belief system) is delivering what I need at the very time I need it. I have realized that Spirit gives me the experi-

sionate. The challenge is to feel thankful in the midst of the storm, trusting that we are being given the opportunity to grow and learn in some needed way. When my clients come to me to do shamanic

“Be grateful for whatever comes, Because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.” ences I need to grow when the time is right. If I trust that each moment, each experience and each relationship is perfect, regardless of whether it’s “Good” or “Bad”, then I can feel grateful for it. In fact, I can let go of the labels “Good” and “Bad” entirely. Now I simply use labels like “Enjoyable” or “Challenging”. Most of us can recount some past experience that was incredibly painful, yet looking back we can see how it helped us to grow in some way…. perhaps to be stronger or be more compas-

work, they are often contending with some painful event, loss or unexpected change. They are seeking guidance on how to proceed or simply to know “why”. Spirit always helps them to understand and how to move forward. It often involves a life lesson, karma or a wake-up call. Typically, clients will feel the unconditional love and support of Spirit and then experience deep gratitude. They can live by the words of Rumi, the great Persian poet and Sufi mystic.

How To Visualize Better Health, Posture

Then Make It Happen! We all know that exercise is good for our health. But few of us realize the benefits of incorporating your mind in these exercises. By incorporating the mind you use brain cells which keep them from dying and, in turn, enhances the activity of the mind. For example, many people today have transportation such as a car or bicycle. We maintain our vehicle by servicing, tune up’s, cleaning, washing, gas and more. If the vehicle suddenly makes a sound or runs in a different manner, we immediately take notice and usually bring it to a professional for correction/repair. But too often we receive signs from our bodies (our personal vehicle) and we choose to ignore them Then we wonder why we have chronic pain! It is imperative to be aware of your body, posture and alignment. It will benefit your overall health including body and mind. Joseph Pilates said “the balance of body and mind is the conscious control of ALL muscular movements of the body.” Joseph Pilates methods were originally called Contrology. He was born in Germany in 1880 and was a sickly child. He improved his health through physical activities like gymnastics, boxing and skiing. During WWI he worked as a nurse in England. He provided exercises for the injured by utilizing springs from the hospital beds and other props to create resistance training, improve strength and flexibility. He later moved to New York and opened a studio. He built the equipment known today as the Reformer, Wunda Chair, Ladder Barrel, and Cadillac. The exercises may be performed on the Pilates equipment or on a ‘mat’ using your own body weight or simple props such as a ball and stretch band.

Here is what we have learned through the years from the Pilates philosophy...

The Core.

Physically speaking, the stronger the ‘core’ of your body, the stronger (physically) will be your potential. Breath and posture have a major impact on how effective your fitness program is. Pilates exercises will give you a sense of energy and confidence by increasing your strength while becoming more flexible. These movements and principals encourages individual to have body awareness, obtain better posture and move more efficiently within your own body. Moving freer in your body, lighter in your body and on the joints, creates a general positive effect on your well being and more energy for other activities! This sense of energy clears the brain and strengthens will power. The principals of Pilates include concentration, breathing, centering, control, precision, flowing movement, isolation, and routine.

and make you more tranquil, improve brain function, blood circulation and physical coordination. As you inhale, inspire the body and feel a lengthening in your spine. The exhale comes from strength to force out toxins. Exhale and draw the transverse abdominis towards the midline of your body. Pull it back towards your spine and

Centering is finding your own ‘powerhouse’ which includes the abdominals, lower back, adductors (inner leg), hamstrings and buttocks. These muscle groups are important for stabilization (pelvic stability) and strength. Probably the most important activity which so many of us do not do properly is walking upright. Heads up,

Concentrate on mastering the relatively simply movements each time to a point of subconscious reaction. It won’t be dull; it will just happen. And that is how to progress from visualizing improvement to actually making it a part of your everyday life.

To breathe, oxygen is drawn into the lungs and entered into the blood stream throughout the body. An increase in the amount of oxygen will benefit the health of ALL your cells

up towards your heart. Proper breathing is like “working out.” It does so much good and is so easy to learn and practice until it becomes automatic.

shoulders back—not head down, shoulders rounded! Simply “walking straight” is the best exercise you can do to achieve posture and strength. And you

and Strength

Holistic Dentistry

By Emily Wenzel can do it anytime without an appointment!

Better health is totally dependent on control and that requires you to focus on the purpose of the exercise, the goal, and breath of the movement. Precision is a component of control. More precision increases the quality of the movement. Flow through each movement to work each joint through a full range of motion. Controlled and flowing movement assist in focusing on flexibility and strength. Learn to isolate certain parts of the body with the mind. By strengthening the core first and then the limbs (arms/legs), this creates a more balanced body.

Routine doesn’t mean boring but it does mean practice and practice. This is with anything in life! Practice and you will feel stronger from the inside out. Joseph Pilates said “we are as young as our spine is flexible.” Can you flex, extend, rotate and laterally bend the spine? As an athlete and fitness professional, I incorporate a variety of physical activities

in my everyday life. I have certainly tested the limits of my body and crossed the line! Additionally, after suffering from a digestive disorder, my alignment was impacted due to chronic inflammation in the abdomen and intestines. This inflammation created scar tissue which pulled organs and facia “out of order” from the base of the spine. Personally, the Pilates principles made an incredible impact to my overall health. Watch TV for one evening including the commercials. It seems like everyone “needs” a perfect body. But we’re going about it backwards! We are trying to achieve so called perfection from the outside. And too many of us neglect the inside. Reverse the focus. That is what I’ve tried to cover in this brief summary. When you set a goal such as planning a trip, you’re mindful about saving money, visualizing the location and researching activities at the destination. Imagine being just as disciplined in the approach to your health. And—starting with the inside of your body-visualize better posture and strength. Follow the basics we’ve just covered and YOU CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Common Diet Myths REVEALED! This month: Myth #5 Soy has been promoted as the perfect health food and even a hormone replacement therapy candidate! This can be a huge problem and adversely affect your health. Here are a few of the facts (all the facts are listed in the booklet: “Lies Exposed: The 7 Diet Myths Revealed” by Dr. Marie and Dr. Riggin).

Fact #1

“In 1913, soy was listed by the USDA an Industrial Material – NOT FOOD! This is what you are eating when you eat soy: an industrial waste product. Soy as it grows in the field is not actually a low-fat paragon. It’s about 30 percent fat. Once upon a time it was grown for its oil–not because people ate it, but because it was used for paint and glue.”* *The Vegetarian Myth, by Lierre Keith

Fact #2

In Asian cultures, soy is consumed if it’s fermented, like soy sauce, or Miso soup, or during a famine when “real” food in unavailable. According to KC Chang, editor of Food in Chinese Culture, the total caloric intake due to soy in the Chinese diet in the 1930’s was only 1.5%, compared with 65% for pork. For more information on the traditional use of soy products, contact the Price Pottenger Nutrition Foundation.* *

Fact #3

The high estrogen content in soy can damage your hormone communication system; adversely affecting hormone health. Even edamame can cause long-term problems due to soy’s toxic effect on hormone communication. According to “Jones, Naturally Occurring Estrogens in Food--A Review. Journal of Food Additives and Contamination 1985;2(2):73-106. That estrogen compounds in plants “induce estrus in immature animals and interfere with normal reproductive processes has been known for more than half a century. Consideration should be taken of any medium or long-term changes in dietary habits, which might be expected to increase the intake of such phytoestrogens. The increasing use of vegetable proteins in general, and in particular introduction of soy milk products for infant feeding, are two such examples.”* 16 NOVEMBER 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

* Soy products are being touted as an anti-aging product; helping hormone problems, when women don’t want to take hormone therapy. Yet this addresses the wrong problem. It merely covers up symptoms, instead of correcting the root cause of the problem – which is most commonly adrenal gland fatigue – to restore hormonal functioning.

Fact #4

Most Soy has been genetically modified. 85% of the soy processed in the USA is genetically modified. GMO means the seeds’ DNA have been manipulated It can’t even be sold in Europe or CHINA, that’s how strongly the Chinese, European, and other governments are aware that “foods” made from genetically modified organisms (GMO) products are dangerous and bad – for your health, and for the environment. There is much more information on the topic of soy that hasn’t been coverd, and more detailed information outlined in our booklet “Lies Exposed: The 7 Diet Myths Revealed”. We encourage you to further your education on this topic and be well informed. Next month, Myth #6! Dr. Kim Marie and Dr. Mary Riggin co-created the booklet “Lies Exposed: 7 Diet Myths Revealed” as a result of their purpose to help as many people as possible achieve a higher level of health and wellness in their lives. Over the course of many years, working with thousands of people as licensed acupuncturists and doctors of acupuncture practicing full-scope Oriental Medicine in the Tampa Bay area, the concept of using food as medicine has become more important in order to achieve optimal results in the clinic. Dr. Riggin is Founder and Director of Healing Touch Oriental Medicine, a natural medicine group, with 2 locations – Clearwater and Palm Harbor (East Lake Rd). Dr. Marie is Medical and Weight Loss Director and exclusively at their East Lake location. They are free lance writers, popular speakers, and co-host “Food is the First Medicine Radio Show”. What are the 9 Signs of a Healthy Relationship?

Tango, the “LOVE” Experts, offer insight into what makes healthy relationships tick. 1. You look out for the other person. When both parties look out for one another, the results are profound, primarily because it creates a basis of trust that is the relationship’s bedrock. When you know someone has your back, it gives you tremendous security and frees you from chronic thoughts of doubt and uncertainty that can otherwise plague relationships. This strong sense of trust and dedication to your partner’s well-being is the greatest gift we can give to our partners.

2. You take the high road. Let’s face it. Sometimes you want to get back at your partner because he or she has hurt you. Even in the best relationships, hurt and disappointment are inevitable. The magic is in how couples manage such things. Relationships where each individual has the maturity and ability to take the long-term view and strive to treat the other well are much better off than those where partners act on each emotional impulse or every perceived infraction. Taking the high road takes great strength and thoughtfulness. It often feels more rewarding in the moment to give in to melancholy, vindictiveness, anger or a host of other negative expressions. Taking the high road means actively putting your best foot forward—even when you would rather pout or wallow or exact revenge (even in small petty ways).

3. You know that some conflict is normal and expected.

you just can’t let it go. This can be a sign that an unresolved issue has the potential to turn into lasting resentment, and should be openly discussed.

5. You talk so the other is able to listen. So how do you talk about the tough stuff? Healthy resolution of conflict involves honest and respectful communication, a willingness to look at your own contribution, and the ability to know if you need to take a time-out and come back to it later. If anger comes up, you may need time (20-30 minutes is usually good) to cool so you don’t say something in the heat of the moment that you might later regret.

6. You feel free from retaliation or judgment. Healthy relationships provide a feel-good atmosphere of support, encouragement, teamwork and love. This support and encouragement leads to a higher level of comfort whereby you are able to clearly express yourself without fear of retaliation or judgment.

7. You feel like yourself— your best self. Healthy relationships align with your core beliefs, convictions and overall chosen style of life. In a healthy relationship, you never have to worry about changing yourself in order make the relationship function. You also never have

to worry about losing your partner when you decide to make some changes. There’s no need to be someone else, do something that makes you feel uncomfortable, or act in a certain way. You often hear yourself saying or thinking, “This relationship brings out the best in me.”

8. Your quality of life is higher because you’re together. Healthy relationships improve your quality of life. Are you growing? Are you wiser? Are you more mature? Have you modified your behaviors into a more positive manner? Has your attitude and overall outlook on your life and goals improved? If you are saying yes to these questions, you are in a healthy relationship.

9. You don’t have to be attached at the hip. Trusting habits are demonstrated in healthy relationships. That means you are not going through her phone, checking his email, having to be by his side everywhere he goes in order to keep an eye on what he’s doing. Instead, you are able to freely allow him/her to do whatever he/she wants to do. In return, your time is spent doing what you want to do. And if/when those two wants cross (i.e. you want to spend time with him and he wants to spend time with you)—you’ll be together...and that’s the bonus. You often hear yourself thinking or saying, “I trust your decision making.”

Contrary to what some may think, a healthy relationship doesn’t mean you’re happy 100 percent of the time. You will argue from time to time—occasional conflict is actually healthy! It’s the natural by-product of two different human beings living in close relationship with one another. Instead of just avoiding arguments, healthy couples know how to handle them when they inevitably do come up. Research shows that this knowledge has everything to do with how long-lasting your relationship will be. Damaging patterns such as one partner “pursuing” while the other is “distancing” have been shown to have a negative impact on the future of the relationship (as evidenced in a 1994 study of long-term marriages by Levenson, Carstensen, & Gottman).

4. You know how to pick your battles. Just because conflict is normal doesn’t mean you have to go out of your way to have it. Before you say anything, decide if the possible negative effect of a comment is worth saying it in the first place. A good rule of thumb: you’ve tried, but

SLEEP: The Magic Bullet

pproximately 1/3 of Americans get less than 6 hours of sleep/night, while only 7-8% sleep 8 hours/night. Basically, this means almost everyone is sleep deprived. And sleep deprivation, particularly when chronic, (meaning you get less than 6 hours/night, every night) leads to big problems. Big problems like obesity, cardiovascular risk, metabolic risk, premature aging, and even cancer. Really want to fall off your seat? Know that 81 of 89 studies looking at sleep deprivation have all had the same finding: lack of sleep increases obesity by 55%. Think about that for a minute. You could be doing ‘all the right things’, like eating your vegetables and meats, taking good supplements, weight training, etc, and still have over 50% risk of becoming obese if you aren’t sleeping properly. This is important to know! Additionally, we’ve all know that it takes discipline to eat well and workout, long-term. Well, guess what? Sleep deprivation has been shown to increase impulsivity, and cause people to become

home after work, when it’s dark, and keep ourselves up in front of the TV well into the night hours. This pattern of being indoors and sedentary during the day, AND indoors and sedentary at night, really plays tricks with our brain. During the day, our brain wants sunlight exposure, and exercise. It wants these 2 things because it then knows it’s meant to produce all sorts of ‘get up and go’ hormones (such as cortisol) get stuff done, and generally be productive. Now, at night, when the sun goes down, our brain wants the opposite to occur. It wants to get away from light (particularly artificial light), and produce ‘rest and digest’ hormones that help us wind down and get to sleep. Hormones like melatonin, which is the well known ‘sleep hormone’. Hormones like cortisol (remember, it’s one of the ‘get up and go’ hormones) are supposed to really drop off at night. Problem is, when we stay up late watching TV, reading on the iPad, checking email, facebook, and generally remaining in ‘work mode’, our brain gets tricked into thinking it’s still day time. At this point, rest and digest hormones aren’t made, melatonin production is very low, cortisol production remains high, and our need to sleep is hidden. The cycle of sleep deprivation begins the day you wake up feeling like you never even went to sleep.

When cortisol levels remain higher than normal at night, it tells the body several things: less likely to work for something that they otherwise would. So, say you ‘want to’ eat healthy and go to the gym every day, generally leading a healthy life. Sleep deprivation has been shown to halt your desire in its tracks - bringing on what I call the “I’ll do it tomorrow” syndrome. It happens every week! You vow to start on Monday, yet when Monday rolls around, you’re tired from the weekend and lack desire to go workout. In your fatigued state, you throw on the sweat pants and grab a bowl of popcorn. Sure, discipline is part of what has to be developed here, but increased sleeping time every night has actually been shown to increase motivation, and that ‘get up and go’ attitude. Sleep may be your magic bullet. Let’s take a look at why sleep is so important for weight loss. A lot of it has to do with physiology. Specifically, sleep deprivation causes some pretty significant disruptions in how our body was meant to work. Most of us are living life quite opposite to how we were meant to. This is often referred to as living a ‘broken lifestyle’, and living in ‘discordance’ with biology. Discordance means in disagreement with. Our bodies, brains, and hormones are genetically hardwired to be awake, productive, and moving around during the daylight hours, while being slower paced, more relaxed, and sleeping during the dark hours of the night. What most of us do now is opposite to this - we spend the daylight hours sitting indoors working, barely moving, then go 18 NOVEMBER 2013 • Tampa Bay Wellness

1. Adapt to stress, please, because we’re stressed. Adapting to stress is a catabolic, muscle-wasting type of thing, which also creates problems for the immune system. 2. Metabolism, please slow down. The thyroid gland is our master metabolism gland, and it doesn’t like chronically elevated cortisol. Cortisol alters enzymes that convert T4 into T3 (T3 being the active thyroid hormone). If your brain is up all night, charged by artificial light, your thyroid will usually downregulate itself, which affects metabolism. 3. Feed me. Cortisol causes another hormone, called insulin, to rise. Insulin is a master fat-storing hormone, and usually creates desire for sugary foods. Does the pattern of late-night junk food snacking ring a bell? Furthermore, 2 other hormones are involved which really seal the deal. They’re called Leptin, and Ghrelin. Ghrelin is a hunger hormone, released when we’re hungry or fasting. It encourages appetite. After meals, ghrelin decreases. Leptin, on the other hand, is an appetite suppressing hormone, meant to peak at night. These hormones work in sync, depending on food availability and whether we’ve had a good night sleep. Now, here’s the kicker. A recent study took a group of healthy young men, and subjected them to sleep deprivation. Leptin and Ghrelin adjusted automatically so that hunger increased, and the men became more likely to store fat and less likely to burn energy. There was also an immediate impairment in glucose regulation.

of Fat Loss To really dial in sleep and get your mojo going on again, here are some excellent tips to improve sleep quality: 1. Determine your sleep schedule. What time do you get up in the morning? Granted you want to aim for 8 hours of sleep, you will need to be in bed, asleep, by 10 if you get up at 6. Once you determine your sleep schedule, stick to it. 2. About an hour before bed, begin to unplug and unwind. Turn your phone to silence, close out email and work, turn off the TV and get away from the computer. Your brain won’t let you sleep if you’ve been looking at bright lights all night. 3. Dim your household lights. Do relaxing things like read, or stretch. Heck, everyone talks about improving their flexibility anyway, so stretch every night! 4. Keep your bedroom cool, and as dark as possible. Ideally, so dark that you can’t see anything at all. Like a cave! 5. Drop your body temperature. Take a cool shower, or, lie down on the couch with an ice pack under your neck. Our body temperature is meant to naturally drop at night, so assisting with this will help you fall asleep. 6. If possible, get sun exposure during the day. If you live in a state with minimal sun during the winter months, at least try get outside to exercise during the day. Otherwise, hit the gym during ‘daylight’ hours, so that your body gets bright light exposure during the day. Resources used for this article: 1. Dan’s Plan (Baron 2011) 2. Sheen AJ, et al. AMERICAN SCHOOL OF NATURAL HEALTH (ASNH) OPENED IN TAMPA ASNH is a new school in Florida founded by the German Naturopath Hermann Keppler. It offers 2-4 year programs in Nutrition, Herbal Medicine and Natural Health on a Consultant and Master level. All programs can be studied part time on weekends. Hermann Keppler, President of ASNH has more than 30 years of experience in treating patients and has been running training courses in Europe for many years. If you are interested to change your career, help others and to improve your health, you should contact ASNH today.

along with other dietary measures is an effective answer to many health complaints and common conditions. The Nutrition Consultant Program also focuses on the importance of Detoxification & Cleansing, as only fully functioning organs are able to absorb and utilize nutrients optimally. ASNH students not only learn about the physiological and biochemical process involved in nourishment, but also the energetic side of foods. This course brings together authentic traditions of oriental medicine with Western research based nutrition. The course is carefully structured as each unit builds on the previous one, allowing students to develop their skills and reach their full potential as a Nutrition Consultant. Graduates are encouraged to widen their scope of knowledge by enrolling on the Master Nutrition course.

Herbal Consultant Herbal Medicine is the use of medicinal herbs to promote health. It has a long tradition in all cultures and research has proven its huge benefits. As well as relieving symptoms, herbs work on a deeper level to help people return to full harmony. The use of herbs is becoming ever more popular as more and more people seek out qualified Herbal Consultants. The ASNH Herbal Consultant Program is based on Western herbs incorporating the energetic approach to herbs. It is rooted in naturopathic principles, which treats the whole person and not just

Naturopathic Consultant The Naturopathic Consultant Program builds upon the knowledge gained during the Nutrition Consultant Program or the Herbal

Consultant Program. It introduces students to a variety of additional modules and widens their scope of practice considerably. Having all these additional tools at hand, will give you as a practitioner, more answers to people’s health problems. Your ability to help people will increase and as a result you will have more clients. The Naturopathic Consultant program covers a number of Naturopathic applications. You will learn how organs and body parts are energetically inter- connected and study various reflex zones and reflex points in the body. The program also covers Tongue, Nail and Face diagnostics. Knowledge of First Aid Homeopathy and Flower Remedies will give you tools to address injuries, burns, bruises, fractures, acute infections, childhood diseases, stress and anxiety. If you ever wondered why some people feel hot or cold, tend to be dry or damp, or why symptoms such as pain are better or worse at certain times, then TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and Ayurveda can provide the answer. Iridology is another fascinating diagnostic tool taught on this course. By looking at the color and signs in the Iris, it can provide vital information to establish the root cause of ailments, leading to the appropriate treatments. Understanding the possible cause of a disease and the weakness in a person’s health also gives answers on how to guide a person individually in terms of diet. You will learn what an individual menu plan looks like and how to prepare and combine foods. The Naturopathic Consultant course is all about practical application. There are regular short exams and you’ll be asked to twin up with class mates, take cases on each other and apply and experience what you’ve studied. Actual clients will be assessed in the clinic module to further your practical experience. ASNH believes that real knowledge comes from practice. Therefore all courses have been designed to include both informative lectures and practice sessions. This provides students with a unique opportunity to begin applying their newfound knowledge immediately, helping to cement his/her learning and to encourage application in a real-life, practical situation. ow can you graciously receive more prosperity, compliments, gifts, joy, friendships and fertility? The answer is simple—by having gratitude for the things you do have. This may seem like a difficult concept for those of you that are struggling and have lost so much. Let me give you an example, when I have an abundant goal in mind, which may simply be to help us get through the month with peace, joy and light, I PRAY. Yep, I pray to my God/Goddess and my angels…my Source. I’m sending a message out to the Universe. Our Spirit Helpers want to assist us, but they do not impose on our free will, so we have to ask for assistance. By communicating more and more, I now have a direct phone line. My thoughts manifest so quickly. I have to be very careful of the negative ones that creep in. Things like, “I never have enough time to do what I love.” OR “I can’t afford that.” When I do catch myself in the negative, I state “CANCEL.” Cancel my order that I just accidentally placed with the Universe. I then think in an upward spiral. “I’m provided for.” “I am safe.” “I am always supported by the Universe.” When the abundance flows in and I am open to receiving, I then THANK my Source and Spirit Helpers. It is important to acknowledge what comes in no matter how small….no matter how small! This has caused me to appreciate the pennies I find on the ground. I now see them as gifts from Source. I place them in a bowl on my altar with white candles for purity

and green candles for abundance and to represent my love of Mother Earth. My little bowl is now overflowing and it is time to switch to a larger one. I count my blessings when I feel desperate and thank Source for my family our health and a roof over our heads. We are so lucky. You cannot receive abundance when you are coming from a place of desperation. This energy blocks everything and makes you feel hopeless. If you feel this energy, ask your Source to heal the very core of this energy from the root. Forgive anyone you have ever blamed for causing you to feel desperate, including yourself. Ask for your worry to be released so you may feel peaceful. Having envy or jealousy towards a person or group can be the very thing that keeps what you want away. Rather than being envious of what others have, acknowledge their abundance and be happy for what they have achieved. Know that if they can do it, you can too! There is enough out there for everyone. Another energy that can block abundance is the energy of hoarding, which may appear to others as stinginess. You fear losing what you have. This is simply a matter of not being able to trust that there

is enough for everyone. It is important when setting abundance goals that you don’t set goals that are too long-term. If you reach too far ahead and your energy vibration is not aligned with that goal, you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. Accept little improvements, be grateful for them and the energy of gratitude will attract more and more good things to you. Awareness is everything. Once you are aware of your resistance and your blocks to abundance, you begin your healing journey. Start a gratitude journal. Count your blessings daily. Visualize your goals and they will come quickly. Rev. Maggie Batt is a local healer, workshop leader and yoga teacher. Higher Self

By Marcella Zinner

GRATITUDE CONSCIOUSNESS Gratitude is a consciousness of our inner guidance system. It propels us to offer understanding, compassion, understanding, peace, joy, and acceptance. Desire and emotion support and activate this consciousness, or thought form, into an energy that is sensed and picked up by others. People and animals respond to this level of consciousness, or inner awareness system. This shows us there is a mighty force of cosmic power “out there”. This thought-form of gratitude consciousness actually causes and creates an impact on whoever and whatever receives

it. Being and feeling grateful is an internal energy we can generate even if we do not really feel or believe we are grateful. Offering up an attitude of gratitude sends out an energy that changes the outcome. Being grateful, even for the smallest of circumstances, changes the negativity we may feel into a positive energy. Positive energy generates a positive outcome. Something like electricity, we know it works, yet we can’t exactly explain it nor see it happen. It stimulates change for the better. Gratitude is how our

thoughts and words and deeds reverberate outward to others. It is a vast energy system of unseen forces that is felt and sensed. In the popular novel, The Celestine Prophecy, is a story how true recent discoveries of modern physics is more dynamic than the what we have previously believed. Our Universe responds to the mental energy we project out into it. The author, James Redfield, poses the question why not focus our mental energy to make events and outcomes occur? Literally we can change our circumstances and life situations depending on how and what we think. This vast sea of pulsating thought-form consciousness affects us and guides us and affects our behavior. Our life conditions grow and shape and change from our mental attitude, our level of awareness. We can indeed, control and shift an outcome by being aware of our desires and emotions towards gratitude. This power is within all of us. We can and do, not only shape and change our own world around us, but we can and do affect change in our circumstances, our relationships, our prosperity, and our health. Look around your life, observe how you have created your life from your individual consciousness, your thoughts made manifest. Whatever areas are not to your liking, change your thoughts, support them

with your internal guidance system of gratitude. Initiate positive grateful action and change will surely occur. We can overcome and reverse our anxiety and fear by entertaining only thoughts and actions and emotions which register harmony and joy. Releasing the tendency for negative thought patterns, replacing them with positive gratitude thoughts will begin to create new and different actions and reactions from others. This action will begin to be felt and noticed by others. We can change our thoughts by managing our mind. This means being aware of our internal thoughts, feelings and emotions. When we do experience a negative thought or feeling, take a deep breath, exhale, tell yourself you are grateful for whatever lesson there is for you in this situation (even if you do not like it), then move on. Being gratefully aware creates the shift. Decide to effect change for yourself. With the awareness of the power of gratitude we can evolve into beings of unprecedented potential. We can transform our old fears and limiting beliefs and become empowered and highly evolved beings into who we want to be. Shifting away from fear, greed and power-based thoughts will attract circumstances that will reverse conditions. You will manifest your hearts desires of joy and abundance.

Natural Remedies

Multidimensional Healing What is healing? The goal of healing is to return your body’s energy to your divine body blueprint, releasing all that was not in the original blueprint. As this process occurs, you will experience more light energy in your body, peace and bliss. Let go of negative thoughts and emotions soon after experiencing a stressful situation. Transmute the negative energy back to the light. Let go of past negative memories. One’s soul has journeyed a long time and some past memories may be held below your conscious awareness. Releasing the past memories and belief systems that cause dis ease and disease will increase healing. Forgiveness is needed to release the negative energy from the past event that is held in the body. Remember to forgive yourself, as well as others. Forgive yourself for creating any negative thoughts, feelings and actions. Purifying the mind means getting rid of all nega-

tive thinking. Let go of fear, criticism, complaints, competition, anger, blame, guilt, judgment, etc. In addition to self-work, there are many tools and therapies to assist you including affirmations, hypnotherapy and Spiritual Response Therapy (SRT). Increase energy flowing through your body so that your body can better repair itself. There is much available in our area, including energy healing, Myofascial Release, acupuncture, CranioSacral Therapy. Many people are unaware about the fascial system of the body. It is the vast crystalline matrix of connective tissue that connects every cell to every other cell in the body, for communication and energy flow. If there are fascial restrictions in the body, health is compromised. Through specialized Myofascial Release techniques, fascial restrictions are released, expanding energy and restoring health. Purify your food, water and environment as much as possible. When the body recognizes a foreign substance, like chemicals, it innately attempts to eliminate the invader. If it cannot, it tries to wall it off, creating a thwarted inflammatory response. The toxin is a stressor to the body and at times the body will experience an

inflammatory response, signaling that it is still there. That area of thwarted inflammatory response remains blocking energy flow until it can be released and healed. Pain is an indication that there is something that needs to be examined and healed. We as humans, were designed as super sensory beings, with the ability to sense disharmony. This means, listening to your body and pain, and seeking ways to heal your body with a practitioner who can guide you through authentic healing. Expanding the heart energy is vital for health. Along with healthy diet and exercise, releasing any fascial restrictions in the thorax and heart area can release physical, emotional and energetic blocks. Desiring to open your heart more allows you to receive more divine love energy for healing. Letting go of attachments to things and others that do not let you be self-sovereign increases your energy for healing. Self-sovereignty is a state in which you have all your energy available, to use as you choose. Connect to your soul more and more. It will give you intuitive guidance for healing. Connecting to your soul will raise your spiritual energy that helps you in healing. Activities to consider are meditation, spending quiet time in nature, Oneness Blessing, and spiritual retreats. Healing is one of the most important reasons why we are here. Once we clear the negative past energies and choose not to create any new negative energies, we can enjoy life and manifest the life we were meant to live, in peace, love and abundance. Escape From Thanksgiving (no more)

uring my vegetarian years, I remember always wanting to escape from Thanksgiving. In fact, I quite often picked that time to travel to South America! But truth be told Thanksgiving does not have to be about the turkey. It can celebrate friendship, coming together, and the amazing flavors and textures of fall. Have you seen the stunning squashes that are available this time of the year? Instead of turkey as the center of the table, I’ve used one of these gorgeous squash stuffed with cannelloni beans, sun dried tomatoes, fresh rosemary and sage, creamy roasted garlic, and lots of olive oil and parmesan cheese (vegans can sub nutritional yeast). Butternut squash or pumpkin soup can also be ladled into individual scooped-out acorn squash bowls and topped with toasted pumpkin seeds. Quinoa “stuffing” with cranberries, walnuts, celery and mushrooms is an awesome replacement for traditional stuffing! Not to mention so much better for you. Homemade cream spinach is a beautiful comforting thanksgiving dish that can easily be made vegan by subbing soy, hemp or rice milk in lieu of dairy milk and earth balance for butter— swap wheat flour for rice flour and it becomes gluten free. Have you gotten on the roasting every

vegetable bandwagon yet? Roasting is by far the most yummy way to bring out the natural caramelly goodness and toothsome bite of vegetables. Try roasting brussel sprouts and topping with pan sautéed almonds and lemon zest. Sweet potatoes, yellow squash, zucchini, portabellas, green beans, red peppers….throw them all in the oven at 400425 for 20- 25 minutes and watch everyone eat their vegetables. I know I am not alone with distaste for overly processed meat substitutes, but with Field Roast Grain Meat Co., this is not the case. To my knowledge, Field Roast has the most superior product on the market. They make a Celebration Roast and a Hazelnut Cranberry Roast en Croute which is perfect for the holidays and unbelievably mouthwatering. Have great appetizers out for your guests to nosh on while you make the main meal. It can be simple like marinated mushrooms, tapenade, and Marcona almonds. The key to making vegetarian food great is lots of flavor, different textures and fun. Asian cultures seem to do amazing things for vegetarian dishes. fresh shitakes and other exotic mushrooms. You will also find the prices to be quite reasonable. Lacto-vegetarians might offer a cheese tray or make baked brie with apricots. Whole Foods will tell you which cheeses are made from animal and vegetable rennet. Also, simply Googling vegetarian cheeses will give you a safe list. Did you know that there is a vegan artisan cheese company called Dr. Cow? Cheeses are made from macadamia nut, brazil nut or cashew milks and are considered raw! There is even briny luscious vegan caviar available now, which is made from seaweed. Two brands to try are Cavi-Art and Kelp Kaviar. So, what if you are a guest for thanksgiving and not hosting a fantastic super-chic vegetarian meal? Bring a dish that you’d enjoy to share (probably one with some vegetarian protein). Somebody will no doubt bring up the fact that you are a vegetarian. Just be nice and non-judgmental of yourself and them. Remember, even if you are eating Chef Boyardee from a can, bless the food, and be grateful for it. I know some are vegetarians for reasons concerning health and others for moral reasons, or both. TAURUS Compassion is the watchword for you this month. Take the time to notice more situations that surround you. Make an effort to reach out to someone or those you have not been in touch with. Sometime a little loving contact is all another person needs in order to feel loved and appreciated.

Time to acknowledge both sky and earth! It is very much as if you are able to connect the two realms and this can bring new possibilities of growth and happiness. Seek to stretch yourself this month. Look deeper into nature and listen more closely to your inner voice for much good can follow.

GEMINI Deep within you is a deeper source of power and strength that you can draw on as needed as you continue to take steps in creating a new way of being and living. Focus and discipline are the two main allies no matter what goals you are trying to achieve. Keep it simple and use the wisdom you have gained thus far.

There is a stirring in the air for those of you looking for love. This is a great time to either go deeper into a relationship or take some risks to perhaps meet someone. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as an ideal love. Adjustments are part of the story while at the same time make sure you are clear as to what your true needs really are!

aAwonderful experiment would be to totally rely on your inner voice and allow the dictates of your spirit to guide you without doubting yourself once. It has to do with walking a path that is more transpersonal, above the mundane and reflective more of what could be termed the beyond. This is a place that is free of all the criticisms, power struggles, denials and other delusional minutiae. This could catapult you into a new and deeper sense of potency!

Take some time to refine current projects. Also, it is time to capitalize on issues that surround you by cultivating a bit more beauty and elegance. Evaluate what may need to be repaired or replaced within your home and surroundings.

SAGITTARIUS You may have noticed there is a cosmic buzz in the air that is bringing you the news that it is time to expand. Since nothing can grow without attention, nourishment and a sprinkle of effort begin to line up your priorities and move into seeking what you so dearly desire. Why not?

CAPRICORN All living things need attention and encouragement given by a loving heart. This is your opportunity to practice tenderness and promote someone or something within your life that you are well aware deserves it. Stretch yourself and mentor where as needed in a way that allows you to connect and give.

AQUARIUS Compassion is the keyword as well as testing your ability to link those of like mind. Make more effort to foster unique ideas and make connections between those in your network. Go beyond personal attachments and seek to fly a bit higher, sing a bit louder. Make a difference.

PISCES The dawn of a new day can sometimes sneak up on you…. it is time to snap to attention and ponder how actions taken in the past really do not help so much as pointing your compass to the future…stop looking in the rear view mirror…there is a new sun rising.
