Sperm Counts Dropping

perm counts appear to be plummeting throughout the Western world, according to a large study of men around the world. An international team of scientists analyzed data from nearly 43,000 men in dozens of industrialized countries and found that sperm counts dropped by more than half over nearly four decades. “I think that we should take this very seriously,” says Shanna Swan, a reproductive epidemiologist at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. She helped conduct the study published in the journal Human Reproduction Update. “I think it’s a wake-up call,” Swan says. Previous studies have suggested that sperm counts may be falling around the world. This study is the largest and most comprehensive to date. It was designed to resolve doubts about the earlier findings, Swan says. Even at the reduced sperm counts, infertility has not become a widespread problem. At the most, the lower levels of sperm may make it harder for some couples to conceive, Pacey says. But there’s no sign the decline is slowing, which means that male infertility could become a more common problem in the future. “Since this is the best study that’s ever been done, it is concerning that it suggests such a progressive and dramatic decrease in sperm counts over time,” says Peter Schlegel, a professor and chairman of urology at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. Schlegel serves as vice president of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. Schlegel stresses, however, that more research is needed to confirm the findings and try to determine possible causes. “Since we don’t know what could be causing it, it’s worrisome,” Schlegel says.

NEWS Dear Yogis,

After Irma, we are left to assess the damage not only to our homes, but to our bodies and minds. The sustained stress of the waiting, watching, anticipating and intense decision-making lingers in our tight shoulders and clenched stomachs. Those who labored to secure our homes feel the ache of those efforts in tired legs, sore backs and sheer exhaustion. Those of us who scoured the aisles of Publix and Costco are still reeling from intense mental circuits of anxiety, panic, even dread, as we were faced with empty shelves and frantic faces. We made lists. We made decisions. We packed cars. We got on planes. We shielded phone calls and texts from anxious relatives and friends. We etched the media images of Hurricane Irma deeply in our minds, so much so that we dreamt of her and dream of her still. We were faced with an uncertainty that was in moments simply too much to bear. Now that Irma is gone, and we have been spared her brunt, we breathe the proverbial sigh of relief. Yet the stress and the images that we carry from the past week are still with us, embedded deep within our tired muscles and weary hearts. The mental, physical and emotional exhaustion is still present and hard to shake. Many of us are still on high alert, not yet sure we can let down our guard. As yogis, we have some work to do. The first hurdle is to return to our practice. We may fear that we won’t be able to meet the challenge, or that our bodies are simply too tight or too tired. We must trust that our mats are simply where we show up to work through whatever is going on with us on any given day. Trust me when I say, the longer you wait, the harder it will become! Consider your yoga practice as the stable container that can hold the full range of your stress, uncertainties and emotions. Or, a vehicle through which to experience the healing balm of your simple attention to breath. As always, you come just as you are. Through this experience, I have been reminded of the heightened sense of awareness that comes with any crisis. This visceral experience of heightened senses, immediacy and singleness of mind that comes from being on high alert is in some sense very close to what we seek to cultivate in our yoga practice. This very state of alertness is what is necessary for our spiritual awakening and for the fine tuning of our inmost being. Balanced with a sense of “Calm Abiding” that we gain through the cultivation of stillness and breath, we are equipped to live meaningful and purposeful lives even despite the daily stressors that we face. The Wisdom Traditions remind us that every crisis can also be viewed as opportunity. In the wake of Irma, we have an opportunity to ask important questions about our priorities, our strategies for handling stress, our way of being in relationship to ourselves and our loved ones when faced with a crisis of any kind. We can ask ourselves whether we have penetrated the heart of our Yoga practice to ask the all-important questions: Who am I and How am I to live? For me, coming back to the mat this week was tough in some ways, but also a welcome relief. The 26 Postures, as they often do, felt like old friends that reminded me of my strength and my ability to find stability, balance and purity of mind when challenged. Though the storm knocked me off center, my practice reminded me of the way back. For those of you who are still new to this practice, but feel called to it, I urge you to consider it as a daily practice for building reserves of strength, courage, and resilience for handling the myriad of stresses that make up our lives. Far more than just physical exercise, yoga is about building a community of yogis who are also strong of heart, mind and spirit. Let us come together in the coming weeks to remind ourselves and each other of that vital pulse at the heart of our practice. Namaste. Karen Ledesma/Yoga365

ouise was an incredible visionary and advocate. Everyone who had the privilege to meet her, either in person or through her words, felt her passion for serving others. Considered a founder of the self-help movement, Louise was dubbed “the closest thing to a living saint.” She published her first book, Heal Your Body, in 1976 (at age 50) long before it was fashionable to discuss the connection between the mind and body. Louise started what would become her life’s work in New York City in 1970. She began attending meetings at the Church of Religious Science and then entered a ministerial program. She became a popular speaker at the church, and soon found

herself counseling clients. This work quickly blossomed into a full-time career. After several years, Louise compiled a reference guide detailing the mental causes of physical ailments and developed positive thought patterns for reversing illness and creating health. This compilation was the basis for Heal Your Body, also known affectionately as “the little blue book.” Louise was able to put her philosophies into practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs, and instead developed an intensive program of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing, and psychotherapy. Within six months, she was completely healed of cancer. In 1980, Louise began putting her workshop methods on paper. In 1984, her second book, You Can Heal Your Life, was published. In it, Louise explained how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better. You Can Heal Your Life became a New York Times bestseller and spent 16 weeks on the list. More than 50 million copies of You Can Heal Your Life have been sold throughout the world. In 1985, Louise began her famous support group, “The Hayride,” with six men diagnosed with AIDS. By 1988, the group had grown to a weekly gathering of 800 people and had moved to an auditorium in West Hollywood. Once again, Louise had started a movement of love and support long before people began to wear red ribbons on their lapels. In 1987, what began as a small venture in the living room of her home turned into Hay House, Inc.: a successful publishing company that has sold millions of books and products worldwide and now has offices in California, New York, London, Sydney, Johannesburg, and New Delhi. “Meeting Louise changed the direction of my life,” said Reid Tracy, President and OCTOBER 2017

CEO of Hay House, Inc. “Her passion for serving others translated into everything she did. Simply by working alongside her, an analytical accountant like me transformed into someone who became aware of the power of affirmations and self-love. Being able to learn from her has been one of my life’s greatest blessings. The beauty of Louise was that you didn’t have to work alongside her to learn from her, you felt like you were there with her with every word you read or heard.” Hay House has published works by many notable authors in the self-help movement, including Dr. Wayne Dyer, Doreen Virtue, Dr. Christiane Northrup, and Esther and Jerry Hicks, among others. Louise was very vocal in her belief that age was irrelevant to achieving one’s dreams. To that point, at 81, Louise released her first-ever film on her life and work, You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie. Hay House will carry on Louise’s legacy and continue to publish products and online learning courses that align with her message of self-improvement and self-love. Louise Hay’s estate, as well as all future royalties, will be donated to The Hay Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by Louise that financially supports diverse organizations supplying food, shelter, counseling, hospice care, and funds to those in need. The service in honor of Louise L. Hay will be a private and intimate event. In lieu of flowers, we welcome your donations to the Hay Foundation. www.hayfoundation. org Tampa Bay Wellness

Mold is a problem that can seriously impact your health and Jennifer will explain how exposure to mold increases your risk of developing chronic issues and how they may be misdiagnosed or mistreated. Jennifer explains, “It is essential to help to raise the public profile of mold, especially in states like Florida where it is a real problem. Because it is often invisible in a building or area, the occupants do not realize they are breathing in the mold toxins, they just start getting sick. Many doctors do not test patients for mold and so the underlying reason for the condition goes untreated. ” Seating is limited so you must sign up at Customer Care at Nature’s Food Patch or call 727-443-6703. BODY - Fitness

Bored at the gym? Just do some INTERVAL TRAINING By Georgios Tzenichristos

Interval training is more fun than continuous training In a study of 31 obese young women who followed either a high intensity interval training (HIIT) regime, or a more typical moderate-to-vigorous intensity continuous training (MVCT) it was found that both types of training were effective in improving fitness and losing weight, but HIIT was found to be more enjoyable. Georgios’ comment: Indeed, interval training, with its alternation between high and low intensity (variety) and the welcome breaks it providers (small but repeated rewards after intense exertion) is much more fun than steady state training, where there is monotony and the reward is only to be received at the end of the session. Of course both types of exercise are necessary and have their own merits, but interval training is simply much more fun. Do you want to keep your heart healthy? Exercise, even if you cannot lose your stomach fat.

Exercise improves your heart and metabolic health, irrespective of stomach fat Another study, which examined 1970 adults for three years, has found that exercise improves heart / metabolic disease risk, even if stomach fat is not reduced due to the exercise. Belly fat is known to be a major risk of such health conditions, yet this study has shown that exercise itself can improve health, even if stomach fat does not end up being reduced. Georgios’ comment: Normally stomach fat cells produce pro-inflammatory proteins which increase the risk of heart disease. But it seems that exercise can actually switch those stomach fat cells into producing less of those inflammatory proteins and more of the anti-inflammatory ones, which results in improved metabolic health, regardless of belly fat loss. On a crash diet and worry you might

lose your muscle tone? Forget protein powders and start training.

Exercise preserves muscle mass and performance during extreme dieting. Protein by itself does not. In a study comparing the effect of exercise vs protein powder supplementation, it was found that exercise was the best way to preserve muscle mass, while whey protein was not of much help. Georgios’ comment: This makes sense, as exercise provides a stimulus for muscle building, or at least muscle maintenance. On the other hand, protein powder itself, although being an important muscle building block, does not by itself provide any stimulus for muscle building. If it did, everyone would be toned and muscly just by consuming protein powder. So, important as protein may be, for muscle tone during weight loss, exercise is much more important. Brainwashed into believing that high fat diets are the best? You’d be surprised by the findings of this study.

Low fat is a better diet to stick to after weight loss and equally effective as low carb This study followed for 18 months 131 overweight people who initially lost 8% of their body weight through dieting (about 10lbs weight loss for the average person). The dieters were divided into three groups: low carb, low fat and typical western diet. After the end of the study it was found that all participants equally regained most of the weight and that the most dropouts occurred in the low carb diet, which was the least “fun” diet to follow. There is one consolation though: the low carb dieters improved their cholesterol more than the other groups, while the western diet followers predictably had almost no cholesterol status improvement. Georgios’ comment: Indeed low carb diets are much more difficult to follow, but OCTOBER 2017

as the study has found, they are also the healthiest. On the basis of this research, I would go with the flow and follow the diet that best suits my specific needs, likes and hates, so that I could stick to it in the long run. Sticking to a diet is THE most important part when dieting or trying to maintain the weight off. Did you fall for the “coconut oil makes you feel fuller and helps you lose weight” fad? You’re not alone…

Coconut oil is NOT the same as medium chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, in terms of satiety or weight loss This study examined the satiety effect of coconut oil, versus MCT oil vs normal vegetable oil and showed that coconut oil is not nearly as effective as MCT oil in reducing hunger and food intake. This study resonates with another similar study last year which find that coconut oil does NOT help you burn fat and does NOT help you lose weight, as MCT oil does. Georgios’ comment: Coconut oil has become the darling fad of celebs, bloggers and instagrammers, with almost magical properties attributed to it. This was based on several studies which have shown that MCT (a constituent of coconut oil) do improve satiety, boost thermogenesis and stimulate weight loss. However, coconut oil only contains 14% MCTs and the studies were conducted with 100% MCT oil, i.e. 7x times more. Coconut oil is NOT the same as MCT oil, in the same way that black cherries are not the same as a black forest gateau. They are two totally different things, and all those studies on coconut oil prove it. Coconut oil may be or may not be a healthy fat (still debatable by scientists) but one thing is for sure: it does not help you lose weight. A Glimpse of Hope with Acupuncture

By: Megan Frangos

Acupuncture restored my faith that I would find relief from my chronic pain.

re you the type of person that visits your primary care physician at the slightest instance of a cold? It’s almost a guarantee that when you visit your doctor they’ll prescribe you a pharmaceutical drug to help treat your symptoms. What if your condition is chronic? The primary care physician will then send you to get lab testing, imaging, and refer you to a specialist, who would then prescribe you more pharmaceutical drugs. What if you had a chronic condition such as migraine headaches that didn’t improve even after taking multiple medications for an extended period of time? In most cases, the doctor would keep experimenting with different treatments until they found something that worked. However, in my battle with migraines, I was dismissed from care after my neurologist expressed that he was out of options and could no longer assist me in treatment. I remember, as my eyes welled with tears, I couldn’t help but feel completely helpless. I had been suffering for four long 12

years with this chronic condition. I had been experiencing migraine headaches almost daily and now my only option for treatment had been retracted. Was I destined to experience these debilitating headaches for the rest of my life or was there an alternative treatment? Although the mainstream form of treatment was no longer an option for me, I remained optimistic that there was still a glimpse of hope. I spent several months researching alternative treatments for chronic migraines and one form of treatment stood out among all the rest, acupuncture. The only thing I knew about acupuncture is that it required needles. Questions arose in my mind, wondering how this treatment would help me. At this point I didn’t care how it worked. I’d seen enough testimonials on how this alternative medicine helped relieve migraines, as well as a long list of other conditions, and I was going to give it a try! The day of my first acupuncture treatment had finally arrived and I was ecstatic! OCTOBER 2017

At last, I was going to see what acupuncture was all about and hoped it would indeed relieve my pain. I drove to the clinic of Dr. Lisa Maharajh while experiencing one of my daily migraine headaches. Upon my arrival, I filled out the required intake forms and Dr. Lisa took me back to the treatment room. First, she reviewed my intake forms and asked me some questions, including questions about my diet and nutrition. Then she took my pulse and asked me to stick out my tongue. Yes that is correct, she asked me to stick out my tongue which is a part of the general analysis in Oriental medicine. After her analysis, she then placed some very thin needles into different areas of my body. What happened next was a miracle!!! I started feeling different sensations immediately after the needles were inserted, and at the end of my treatment my migraine was gone!!!! I walked out of the treatment room with tears trickling down my face and a big smile. I thought she must be an angel, and I wanted to hug her although I was too timid. Tampa Bay Wellness

She scheduled me for my next appointment, and I was even more excited than the first time, because I knew acupuncture would really work to treat my chronic migraines. Acupuncture restored my faith that I would find relief from my chronic pain. It gave me hope and I was overjoyed! I continued my treatment with Dr. Maharajh for migraine pain relief as well as preventative care. After months of treatment, Dr. Maharajh suggested that we address my diet to see if anything I was eating was causing my migraines. She suggested that I first try removing gluten and dairy from my diet as well as get an ALCAT blood test to test my food intolerances. Dr. Lisa was able to determine that the cause of my pain all these years was a sensitivity to dairy and gluten as well as some other food sensitivities. After removing these intolerances from my diet my migraines ceased. Acupuncture not only gave me a glimpse of hope but it cured my chronic migraine condition flawlessly! Mind Body and Intuition

By Dr. Chris Jackson, PhD, DOM

n my recent articles entitled “Our Society’s Distorted Perception: Normal Physical Function” and “Mindfulness through Meditation” I explored the roots of psychological and behavioral disorders found in physical dysfunction. Relationships among biochemical neurotransmitters, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis (HPA), the stress response (fight or flight), the sympathetic nervous system, and the parasympathetic relaxation response were explored. The human gut and its microbial communities of bacteria, archaea, fungi, yeasts and protozoa act as another partner in these pathways that stretches our function beyond the limitations of our own human genome,

overlapping into the realm of intuition. As an extension of our function that acts somewhat as a second brain, the intestinal microbiota are also very important to our health and well-being, and may well be the origin of our “gut feeling”. The importance to our health is many fold including generation of vitamins and other nutrients, as well as neurotransmitters (the home of most of our serotonin), nervous system and immune responses. The brain-gut-microbiome (BGM) connection incorporates our intestinal bacteria and the Enteric Nervous System (ENS), a neuronal mesh containing as many neurons as the spinal cord within the linings of our gastrointestinal systems. The brain

communicates via the BGM coordinating neural, endocrine (hormonal), and immune functions. Via the BGM and the HPA, stress and our emotions affect the function of our gastrointestinal systems, with a return response from our gut further modulating our emotions and thoughts, including our intuitive thoughts. This handshaking between the brain and gut/microbiome may also be at the root of many gastrointestinal disorders, anxiety, and depression, due to the effects of gut bacteria on brain chemistry and neuronal activity. A related reactive response may be experienced as well when stress affects our gut microbiota by reducing colonization or damaging our good

flora making space for pathogenic (bad) bacteria, which again affects our brains and immune systems. Gut microbiota number and diversity are important for optimal health and wellness from early childhood through late adulthood. Metabolism of nutrients (vitamins, iron, amino acids) and energy production are keys to development of our bodies and minds. Thus, inherent risks are involved in the wide-spread proliferation of antibiotics that can destroy our good flora and induce problematic imbalances. My

How Do You

Expand Intuition? By Carolyn Puckett

ntuition is a knowing sense that comes from your higher-self and spirit led guidance. Your intuition brings messages--to guide you, for knowledge, as answers to your questions, for insight and new awareness to things that are relevant on your path--to help you make choices for your highest good, to manifest higher life purpose and to create the experiences in your life. We are all connected to Source energy, all of creation on Earth and the energies of the Cosmos. To tap into your intuition more, begin by setting the intention to have more intuition. Pay attention to the clues coming to you. Remember that messages can come in many ways. Decipher the clues that give you pieces of the messages. It’s about expanding your ability to feel, perceive and read energies. Practice and you will improve your ability to pick up

the messages and clues. Meditate daily to receive intuitive messages. Remember to ask questions regarding things you wish to know, to request guidance and to request assistance from a spiritual or higher consciousness level. This will open up the channels of communication for more intuition and synchronicities to come to you. Intuition is connected to your Third Eye Chakra or energy center. It is located between the eyebrows and the pituitary gland or master gland is included in this energy center. If the Third Eye Chakra is open, you have expanded intuition, clairvoyance, knowledge of higher life purpose and wisdom. In order to expand this energy center and activate the Third Eye functioning fully, you have to clear any existing energy blockages in this area. It means

clearing the nadis--energy channels, fascia--energy crystalline matrix and mind level programming—releasing judgment, releasing over-thinking, releasing blocks to spirituality including spiritual ego, expanding common sense, expanding sympathy and empathy. In addition, blockages existing in the other six chakras of the body need to be cleared so that the chakras will expand and integrate more, which will expand your level of consciousness and vibrational energy. Lastly, you need knowledge and practice to raise the Kundalini Energy, which is the creative potential of the human being. The Kundalini Energy is created at the sacrum. When you practice Kundalini Yoga and special breathing techniques including the Mahabandh, the great lock, you begin to generate the energies that will gather and combine at the Navel Center to then move the Kundalini Energy from the sacrum into and through the Sushmuna, the central energy channel. Until that time, no Kundalini Energy is accessible for use and no energy flows through the Sushmuna. This central energy channel once flowing with Kundalini Energy will energize all of the chakras and with more practice, over time, opens the third eye and crown chakras fully. This gives you peace and calm, intuition and wisdom, clarity and insight, as you are experiencing life, connected to the universal consciousness, to manifest your higher life purpose and fulfill your destiny. You can easily begin expanding your intuition by joining a Kundalini Yoga program. There are many classes in our area and around the world, as the knowledge that used to be esoteric is now and becoming mainstream.

The Intuitive

George Washington Carver

By Charles Zinner

eorge Washington Carver, while known as the “Peanut Man”, was far more than just an inventor of peanut products. He was by education, a botanist and chemist, and worked at the helm of the Tuskegee Institute’s agricultural department. His work included groundbreaking research on plant biology, much of which focused on the development of new uses for crops including peanuts, sweet potatoes, soybeans, pecans and clays. Carver invented more than 300 products from peanuts (milk, plastics, paints, dyes, cosmetics, medicinal oils, soap, ink, wood stains) and 118 from sweet potatoes (molasses, postage stamp glue, flour, vinegar and synthetic rubber) and even a type of gasoline. In the end he only patented three because he did not want to spend all his time applying for patents, and he also was known to not care for excessive riches- he turned down a six figure contract with Thomas Edison in order to continue his work in helping the farmers of his day. What has this to do with intuition? Intuition is the ability to gain an insight immediately, without the need for logical or conscious reasoning. In a 1922 interview, he recalled, “Often the people of the neighborhood who had plants would say to me, ‘George, my fern is sick. See what you can do with it.’ I would take their plants off to my garden and there soon have them blooming again ... At this time I had never heard of botany and could scarcely read.” As shown at an early age, Carver intuitively “understood” plant energy and as a Tuskegee faculty member he used his imagination (the faculty of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to

“How do I talk to the flower? Through it I walk to the Infinite. And what is the infinite? It is that silent, small force. It isn’t the outer physical contact. No, it isn’t that. The infinite is not confirmed in the visible world. It is not in the earthquake, the wind or the fire. It is that still small voice that calls up the fairies. Yet when you look out upon God’s beautiful world- there it is. When you look onto the heart of a rose there you experience it- but you can’t explain it. There are certain things, often very little things, like the peanut, the little piece of clay, the little flower that cause you to look within- and then you see the soul of things.” - George Washington Carver

the senses), and showed tremendous creativity through his discoveries. Highly spiritual and religious, Carver was known to wander the fields and forests in the early mornings, as he communed with, talked to and received inspiration from the plants. Explaining his daily meditation with his plants, he said, “I love to think of nature as an unlimited broadcasting station, through which God speaks to us every hour, if we will only tune in.” He stated, “Nothing is more beautiful than the loveliness of the woods before sunrise.” His philosophy towards nature, plants, and people was: “Anything will give up its secrets if you love it enough. Not only have I found that when I talk to the little flower or to the little peanut they will give up their secrets, but I have found that when I silently commune with people they give up their secrets also – if you love them enough.” He is said to have stated that all plants were valuable (to include weeds as well as the domesticated plants) and that if all plants were properly cultivated, used and harvested, there OCTOBER 2017

would not be any hunger. Illustrative of his spiritual faith, and in reference to his intuitive abilities, Carver said, “God is going to reveal to us things He never revealed before if we put our hands in His. No books ever go into my laboratory. The thing I am to do and the way of doing it are revealed to me. I never have to grope for methods. The method is revealed to me the moment I am inspired to create something new. Without God to draw aside the curtain I would be helpless.” Because polio victims were often left with weakened muscles or paralyzed limbs, Carver intuitively felt that peanut oil could help in regaining some lost functioning due to the paralysis inflicted by that disease. It is interesting to note, and surmise, that this was an intuitive diagnosis- because in that period of time (1930s), Edgar Cayce, the American trance medium and psychic, also was doing medical readings and recommending peanut oil, not only for the increased circulation in skin, bones, muscles, tendons, nerves and joints, but also Tampa Bay Wellness

“Its absorption and its radiation through the body will also strengthen the activities of the structural body itself. Between 1919 and 1926, Carver was connected with John Harvey Kellogg (of cereal fame), as they shared an interest in food and health. Carver and automaker Henry Ford quickly struck up a friendship after meeting in 1937 and Carver’s connections also extended outside the United States as he also communicated with Mahatma Gandhi. On Carter’s motivation: “Well, someday I will have to leave this world. And when that day comes, I want to feel that my life has been of some service to my fellow man.” The bottom line illustrated from this great, but humble man, is that intuition and love can enable any one of us to achieve great things for ourselves and humanity. What better outcome could there possibly be but to be of service for the greater good?

GREEN LIVING Recycle Labeling & You

Moving Forward on Emissions Reduction

When Donald Trump announced his intention to pull the US out of the Paris Agreement, the general consensus was that the world would truck on with emissions reductions regardless. Even here in the US—where leadership at the federal level will certainly be missed—the massive number of states, cities, companies, organizations and individuals who committed to redoubling their climate efforts suggests that we’re unlikely to see too much backsliding before a new administration takes over in Washington. Here’s just one case in point: As the New York Times reports, the nine Northeastern states (Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont) that make up the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) have announced an additional 30% reduction in power plant greenhouse gas emissions by 2030, on top of the 40% reduction already achieved since the initiative launched in 2009. True, 30% by 2030 is not as fast as many of us believe we need to go. But I’m a firm believe that targets are at least as important for the direction of travel they set as they are for the speed at which we get there. Announcements like this one from RGGI are one more sign among many that investors, Big Energy and policy makers alike would be foolish to bank on any short-term let up of climate regulations as being indicative of more long-term trends.

Ever wonder if the plastic packaging on your favorite household items is recyclable? Wonder no more, as How2Recycle has created a new, easy-to-understand system for items that are recyclable. Look for the new labels on your favorite products to find out if they’re recyclable nationwide, recyclable on a local level or not yet recyclable. This way you’ll know which products you can avoid sending the landfill. The environmental reasons to recycle are well known, but did you know a recycled materials economy means cheaper goods, too? Recycled packaging becomes new packaging, which is cheaper to produce than creating it from scratch. This helps lower costs for you at the store and keeps our landfills more manageable. By changing our views of what plastic packaging can be, we’ll see it as a valuable commodity instead of trash. For more information on How2Recycle and how you can help, please visit

Fleas – Destruction and Prevention

he Life Cycle and Habits of the Flea or Know Thyne Enemy In order to prevent fleas, or eliminate fleas that are already present, it is helpful to know a bit about their life cycle and habits. The flea life cycle consists of four stages of varying lengths: the egg, the larvae, the pupa (or cocoon) and the adult flea. The eggs are a little smaller than a grain of sand and hatch in 1.5 to 6 days depending on the temperature and humidity. They can be deposited anywhere your pet goes but are most concentrated in your pet’s bedding and favorite hangout spots. The larvae are what hatch out of the flea eggs; they also like to hang out where your pet does with the added preference for places that are dark and slightly damp as low humidity is detrimental to their survival. They feed primarily on the feces of the adult fleas or “flea dirt.” The larval stage lasts from 6 to 36 days depending on conditions. The next stage is what makes it so difficult to get rid of fleas – the pupa or cocoon stage. While the flea completes its development in 7 to 10 days it can remain dormant in its cocoon for YEARS. (Eek!) They hatch when the temperature and humidity are hospitable and/or when they feel the vibrations of a passing host.

(Here’s something else really terrifying and gross – the adult fleas, the ones you see, account for only 1% of the flea population.) Destruction To get rid of fleas you must treat both your pets and the environment. And when we say pets we mean all of the pets, even the cat that never goes outside can ‘catch’ fleas from the dog that does. Also keep in mind that it is possible for you to bring fleas in to your home on your clothing so your indoor cat can get them that way as well. Use a good topical flea prevention (Advantage, Frontline, Revolution – NOT something from Wal-Mart!) to treat your pets and something like Fleabusters to treat the inside and outside of your house. Vacuum all carpeted areas and throw out the bags – the vibrations from the vacuum will cause those fleas in the pupa stage to emerge. It’s not a bad idea to use a powder or other pesticide inside the vacuum bag. Wash in very hot water, or throw out, your pet’s bedding.

So, now that you’ve gotten rid of the fleas you certainly don’t want them coming back, right? Fortunately preventing them is (somewhat) easier than getting rid of them. Regular use of a good topical flea preventative as mentioned above on all of your pets along with periodic treatment of your yard and home should keep the little buggers at bay. Good Luck! THEME - Intuition

ntuition is a natural growth process that we all have. It is a development from our spiritual growth. According to Edgar Cayce, a renowned psychic in the 1930’s and 1940’s, “Intuition can be developed. Setting your intentions coupled with sincere will & effort connects you with your spirituality and your intuitive abilities.” Cayce also taught spirituality and intuition are related, interconnected and dependent upon each other if true success and growth are desired.” The definition of INTUITION is: a non-thought which by-passes the process of thinking and brings thru a sensation of “THIS INFORMATION IS IMPORTANT”.. It is an inner knowing, sensing, feeling and/or seeing from the superconscious mind—a soul mind-guidance. SPIRITUALITY has no religious significance. It is a latent force or characteristic within each one of us. It desires to manifest to some ideal that is bigger than the individual….For the soul purpose to grow in awareness. CHARACTERISTICS OF PEOPLE WITH EACH OF THE FOUR INTUITIVE SENSES

Feeling (Clairsentience): Most

sensitive to others, keep life and work comfortable, give of selves sincerely are people persons, flexible, keep people happy, trust feelings and can feel when things are not right. Best at sensing subtle signals, and are the best huggers. Be aware of the fact that this sense causes them to be prone to other’s’ feelings (good and bad), prone to physical overload due to intuitive fatigue, emotionally and easily overwhelmed

by their feelings, have trouble meeting deadlines or being on time, and susceptible to hurt from personal rejection.

Knowing (Intuition, Precognition): Anticipate problems, quick

minded and can adjust rapidly, naturally sense to be in the right place at the right time. Do not waste time worrying needlessly, innovators with limitless creativity, seldom restricted by convention. Instinctively know needs of family members and loved ones. Hate to miss anything and love a good party. However, can be scattered by volume of thoughts and ideas they receive. Pick up advance information and sometimes too soon. Easily bored, frequently do not complete projects. Often ahead of other people’s timing and are resented for it. Can speak out quickly, blurting words without thinking.

Hearing (Clairaudience): Can hear when someone is lying to them, best at setting mantras, transmitters of intuitive thoughts, not as much overload. They are direct and uncomplicated initiators, excellent organizers of details, best at receiving and understanding specific intuitive information. However, can doubt their intuitive potential, be over analytical and ask too many questions, come on too strong and radiate too much mental energy, have trouble trusting feelings and intuition, and are least sensitive to intuitive subtleties.

Seeing (Clairvoyance): Best at seeing how to integrate all factors into a master plan, good at visual problems, OCTOBER 2017

naturally see when things are OK or not. Can visualize situations, problems, solutions in their head, and know what to do. Excellent sense of time and direction, plan well with calendars and maps, and are outstanding color coordinators. However, can be rigid and inflexible, won’t act until they have the whole picture, world’s very best worriers, tend toward perfection and are highly self-critical. Which one are you?? To develop your particular intuitive ability, focus your meditation on that specific sense. For instance, if you are a feeling type (clairsentience), ask yourself, “how do I feel about _____ “(choose a particular situation or person). If you are a knowing type, ask yourself “what do I have a knowing about what is coming up for me with_______” (choose a particular situation). If you are a hearing type, ask yourself, “is _____ (someone you know) being truthful to me?” If you are a seeing type, ask yourself, “what do I see regarding_______” (a particular person or situation). Soon, you will gain clarity, understanding and a deeper intuitive nature. Try it!

FEATURE - Body/Mind

By Arielle Giordano

urricane Irma has been a major topic of discussion for several weeks!! Hurricane questions such as: Did you survive? Are you okay? What are the damages? Do you have power and internet? People were affected by one of the largest hurricanes. The hurricane symbolized a new beginning. Letting go of the old and starting fresh and new! This is Mother Nature’s way of cleansing the earth. And at the same time, these events can be life threatening and impact everyday life in such a powerful way. People are forced to stop, look, listen, and be present within and without in the moment. As individuals step back from their normal patterns habits, devices and routines, they may see and interpret themselves and their life in a new way. When life is threatened, human beings automatically respond and act differently. Survival of the species kick starts the human brain to be naturally programmed for survival. Hurricanes spark images of an overwhelming traumatic survival crisis, which causes tremendous stress along with other natural disasters such as floods, earthquakes, and tornadoes. The mental and emotional feelings of stress are in the eyes of the beholder. The amount of stress depends on how an individual chooses to appraise or perceive the event. Most people interpret a hurricane as an extremely stressful event and respond physically, emotionally, mentally and in a fight or flight mode. Survival concerns trigger a threat with the possibility of living without power, food, water, gasoline, cable and internet, shelter, the loss of a home, possessions and even death. Many people in Florida, Texas and Puerto Rico & the Virgin Islands may be experiencing Stress and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that can be elicited by natural disasters, in this case, hurricanes. Symptoms of PTSD include re-experiencing the traumatic event such as nightmares and flashbacks, emotional numbness, isolation, inability to relate socially, increased vulnerability, and elevated anxiety, anger and guilt. Some ways to cope and heal from stress and PTSD are to connect with a social group or friends, talk and share with others, counseling, selfcare, exercise, journal writing and dancing. Dancing in all its many forms is a way to move through stress, pain, grief, depression and physical discomfort! The research based article “The Many Health Benefits of Dance” supports the health benefits of dance. The authors of a meta-analysis of 27 studies on the effectiveness of dance movement therapy, concluded that dancing should be recommended as part of treatment for people with depression and anxiety. Dancing also provides physical, psychological, and social benefits. Dancing may enhance your mood and has been shown to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress and boost self-esteem, body image, coping ability, and overall sense of well-being, with the benefits lasting over time. In one study, it even helped control “emotional eating” in obese women who eat as a response to stress. Though other forms of exercise can have many of the same benefits, dancing is more appealing to some people, and they are more likely to stick with it. For example, at the end of a study, that compared tango dancing to mindfulness meditation, 97 percent of participants chose to receive a voucher for

a tango class rather than one for mindfulness meditation. (By the way, the study found that both activities reduced depression, but only dancing reduced stress levels.) In another study, researchers said that attendance was higher with waltzing than conventional exercise, possibly because “dance is a form of exercise in which movement, social interaction, and fun are mixed together. As a dancer, I have danced my fears, anxiety, grief, sorrows, pain, happiness and joy. Stillness happens as the body opens the heart and soul and the expression of dance, awakens the birth of new awareness and understanding. Are you ready to put your dancing shoes on, reduce anxiety, stress, have fun, meet new people, socialize, get fit, reenergize and feel better?

Horoscopes ARIES March 21st – April 19th

You can start a sizzling new romance — or rekindle the spark in your current partnership! Aries can get bored in relationships after the initial excitement fades. But Jupiter in Scorpio these next twelve months enhances your ability to go beyond fear of abandonment that is cloaked as “boredom”. Instead, you’ll see this deeper layer of trust and love as an exciting new exploration, which is a never-ending newness that you crave. Financial prosperity will also flow!

LEO Meditate on forgiving “issues” with family. See how those stories impact your ability to be happy in the present moment. Be observant of your habitual thoughts. You can keep the past alive by reliving it subconsciously — by buying into your undercurrent of negativity. Take charge of your brain, and old problems can suddenly heal because you’re not empowering them with your mind energy. Breakthroughs happen in close relationships, self-esteem and even in your career!

Astrology May 21st– June 20th

Like your Aries pals, it’s a great relationship month! Things improve and you can easily communicate your heart. It’s often hard for you to find words, and to trust others want to listen and respect your ideas. Breakthroughs happen in current connections, or you can meet someone new who is a thoughtful listener. Also, become a better listener of your body. Maybe you can change your diet, or have more rest and stress-reduction activities. Hear your body’s messages with love, just as people are lovingly listing to you.

This is definitely an awesome relationship month! It feels fun to get to know people, and also fun to re-discover a present partner. As Jupiter moves into Scorpio for a year, recommit to health affirmations and visualizations. Eating well can be enjoyable! Incorporate stress reduction practices like yoga or daily meditation. Your witty brain works better when you dote on your body! You can also have an exciting work promotion or a prosperous job offer.

VIRGO This is an awesome money month! Meditate on prosperity. Journal about limiting beliefs about success. Write affirmations and post them where you can see them and repeat them often. Gather a few friends to be a positive-minded group that supports each other’s higher thinking. As always, Virgo, beware of self-criticism. Cultivate joy and humor and you’ll advance quickly toward chosen goals without being mean to yourself!

Nov. 22nd – Dec. 21st

Dec. 22nd – Jan. 19th

Cultivate your inner life. Meditate; walk in nature; ponder the meaning of your dreams; create art. Also, examine your beliefs and see how loving they are. Old, critical subconscious messages can be uncovered and healed. Renew your mind with thoughts that embrace your deepest soul and empower you with faith and action! Bond with friends who have a strong spiritual center to reinforce your commitment to personal growth. Living from your values prospers you emotionally and financially, so stay true to yourself!

TAURUS April 20th – May 20th

Sept. 23rd – Oct. 22nd

Happy birthday Libra! This will be a prosperous, fulfilling year! Starting now, make a list of goals, whether romantic, financial, physical, or whatever. Empowered, confident Mars moves into your sign this month so make your list BOLD! Be clear with the Universe about your desires so you can get clear results. You’re in a balance of being assertive, yet graceful. People will be happy you’re allowing your true self to shine through the usual people-pleasing. Much to your surprise, you’re even more likable

AQUARIUS Jan. 20th – Feb. 18th

You can have effortless success at work! Open up to receive the blessings life wants to hand you. This makes up for times you’ve struggled in the past without reward, so please believe you deserve what’s presented now! You can even have an awesome job offer! Make time for fun. Find new groups of people who have your same interests and passions, and who prioritize playtime as a valid, sacred healing opportunity.

It’s a lifelong process to move toward interdependence, and away from “independence at all costs”. Meditating on trust releases past disappointments and betrayals. Drop the story that you have to be a “lone wolf”, even in close partnerships. Challenge yourself to open to the belief that you can blend with others without losing your individuality. Relationships that feel emotionally “triggering” right now are actually inviting you to grow beyond your limiting thoughts. Stick with them, stay conscious and break through!

CANCER June 21st – July 22nd

We so often hear about our childhoods messing up our lives, but right now, you’re drawing from a “positive piggy bank” of your past! Meditate on values that have been instilled in you, and how you bless others with that internal, unwavering focus. Relationships improve as you praise yourself for how much you’ve evolved and how you’ve unfolded as an awesome soul! If single, you can meet someone and don’t feel you’re bringing negative “baggage”, but rather armfuls of good energy!

SCORPIO Oct. 23rd – Nov. 21st

Joyous, harmonious, desire-granting Jupiter moves into your sign for twelve months! It’s the start of a twelve year cycle for you. Meditate to release and forgive old relationship wounds. Also practice self-compassion so you can truly feel self-love and open a channel to feel the love of others, and the love of the Universe. Open up to new romantic partnerships. Even if already coupled, see him/her with fresh eye and a healed heart. Keep a gratitude list everyday to stay tuned into abundance and happiness. Your body heals as you drop defenses and become more gentle.

PISCES Feb. 19th – March 20th

Often Pisces feels a split between the body and spirit. Part of your spiritual path is to feel your soul inhabiting your body and healing you at a deep level. Meditate on a loving presence permeating every cell in your body and every thought in your mind so you’re entirely surrounded by love physically and mentally. This practice heals wounds of betrayal and other disappointments. You’ll be capable to profound intimacy in relationships since you are fully trusting the essence of life!

THEME - Intuition By Dr. Mercola

s the leaves begin to turn and the air cools in the Western Hemisphere, many begin to crave the scent and taste of pumpkin spice. You may be one of those people — and your craving is actually by design. Fall weather also heralds Halloween season, when pumpkins are cut, scooped and carved into jack-o-lanterns, an iconic part of late October festivities. Interestingly, the pumpkin is not a vegetable as you may have imagined, but rather a fruit. In fact, it is the official state fruit of New Hampshire.1 As part of their annual celebrations, the fall pumpkin festival has showcased thousands of carved pumpkins and has held the world record for the highest number of lit jack-o-lanterns in one place on multiple occasions. The most important use for this large, round orange fruit, is food. Botanists define a fruit as the section of a plant that contains the seeds, while vegetables are other plant parts, such as roots, leaves and stems.2 Other “vegetables” you eat likely also fall under the definition of fruit, such as cucumbers, tomatoes and avocados. Pumpkin seeds, scooped from the inside, are a powerhouse of nutritional value, packed with magnesium, protein, zinc and copper. They also contain phytosterols and free-radical scavenging antioxidants,3 making them a healthy snack choice. The meat from the pumpkin also provides health benefits. It has a positive effect on irritable bladder and prostate complaints. The oil from the pumpkin seeds is mildly diuretic and the principal compound found in the seed, cucurbitacins, appears to inhibit the conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT)4 that plays a role in the development of male pattern baldness.5

squash, corn and beans together, using a symbiotic relationship called “the three sisters” approach. The corn was a natural trellis for the beans, while the bean roots naturally added nitrogen into the soil to nourish the corn. The vines would help to stabilize the corn on windy days. The squash growing low to the ground would shelter the shallow roots of the corn plants, discourage weed growth

History of the Humble Pumpkin

“For pottage and puddings and custards and pies Our pumpkins and parsnips are common supplies, We have pumpkins at morning and pumpkins at noon, If it were not for pumpkins we should be undoon.” Pilgrim verse, circa 1633

Pumpkins are a member of the cucurbita family, which includes cucumbers, zucchini and squash.6 The word pumpkin originated from a Greek word, pepon, that means large melon.7 Early pumpkins didn’t resemble the round, upright fruit sold in stores today. Instead of being grown for decor, they were a staple in the Native American and early settlers’ diet. Early Native American farmers learned to grow

and preserve moisture in the ground. Native American farmers introduced the pumpkin and other squash to the Pilgrims, who found the food source could retain nutrition and store for long periods. Without the pumpkin, many early settlers may have died from starvation. Poems written after the Pilgrims arrived indicated their dependence on the pumpkin for food:

awakens memories of pumpkin pies, family meals and Thanksgiving dinners. However, while the pumpkin plays a significant role in the history of the U.S. and in providing a unique blend of nutrients to promote health, artificially produced pumpkin spice cannot make the same claims. Cinnamon, Nutmeg and Clove … Oh, My! The scent and taste, first released by Starbucks in 2003 in their now famous Pumpkin Latte, is not usually flavored with pumpkin. Rather, the flavors are a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg and clove, which are the traditional spices used in a pumpkin pie. Those scents trigger a strong emotional response in your brain enabling you to easily recall experiences.9 This emotional response that odors generate drives your decision to like or dislike something based purely on smell. The scent of pumpkin spices has been popular in baked goods often reserved for the fall, especially in homemade products. Catherine Franssen, Ph.D., director of psychology at Longwood University, is a fan of the flavor and has an understanding of why this particular combination of spices elicits an emotional response. She commented to CNN:10 “Since these are popular spice combinations, it’s very likely we would have encountered some or all of them combined in a favorite baked good in a comforting situation, like a family gathering, early in life. It’s not just the pumpkin spice combo but that we’ve already wired a subset of those spices as ‘good’ very early in life.” Most mixtures of pumpkin spice typically include some combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, clove and allspice.11 Starbucks has released a new pumpkin spice product alongside their ever-popular Pumpkin Spice Latte this fall. In a press release, Peter Dukes, product manager who led the development of the Pumpkin Spice Latte, commented: “Nobody knew back then what it would grow to be. It’s taken on a life of its own.”12 The video below is a healthy alternative to a store bought Pumpkin Spice Latte.

THEME - Intuition

he human body is equipped with 5 basic senses: vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch. These senses allow us to perceive the world around us in order to ensure our survival. However, there is an additional sense, one that many refer to as a sixth sense, that human beings are also equipped with. The sixth sense is not unusual or strange. Technically speaking, it can be considered intuition. When you utilize your sixth sense, you begin to perceive the world around you through what is called “Extra-Sensory Perception,” or ESP – also known as your intuition. It’s a method whereby humans can gather information critical to survival through means not limited by the 5 basic senses. In essence, this sixth sense is tuned in to wavelengths of energy, and helps humans to navigate the unseen world. When studying in China, advanced Medical Qigong, our Master placed a person outside the room behind a wall and we had to tell him how the person we could not see was moving energy, up, down back and forth etc. OUT of 19 doctors every-one of us were correct in explaining out intuitive perceptions, this was done after nine days of advanced training in Chinese Medicine.

Experiencing Extra-Sensory Perception (ESP)

Many people have felt the sensation of “hairs standing up on the back of their neck” or goose bumps on their arms, or a bad feeling in the pit of their stomach, when something negative happens or is about to happen. This is Extra-Sensory Perception or ESP in action. The human body is comprised of energy, and the sixth sense is fine-tuned to respond to that energy. Have you ever entered into a room and instantly noticed that something was not quite right in there? Your sixth sense was 26

picking up on something that may not have been evident to your eyes or ears. This extra sense informs you of things that are not always so obvious – for example, your sixth sense might sound like a voice in your head warning you not to trust someone, or you might just know that the person you just met is your soul mate, a kindred spirit. Intuition is very often described as an “inner knowing.” It’s a means of gathering information that the regular 5 senses don’t have access to. It quite often works by giving the body warning signs or feelings that cause one to stop and pay attention. Some people ignore this guidance, only

to kick themselves afterwards. How often have you said “I KNEW I should have done that!”? What you are regretting is trusting your judgment, or intuition, at a given moment.

Making sense of – Sixth Sense

The 6th sense is a difficult one to describe, because it can come through in a variety of ways. It can come to you as just a knowing, or as a sensation in the body. It can also come through your mind’s eye, as an inner vision (also known as clairvoyance, or “clear seeing”). It can come through your auditory faculties as a voice of warning or guidance, which is called “clairaudience, or “clear hearing.” In some cases, it can work through your sense of taste or smell, giving you a feeling OCTOBER 2017

of a bad taste in your mouth, or a bad (or good) smell you can’t quite pinpoint to what you see around you.

Can you develop your own ESP?

While we are all equipped with 6 senses, it takes a certain level of time and patience to develop one’s own Extra-Sensory Perception or intuition if it’s not used on a regular basis. Many children are born into the world with an inner knowing, but are told to ignore what they sense and pick up intuitively because it might appear strange to others. So they purposely shut it down, only to realize they very much need it later in life! At the age of 14 this sense doing to outside forces begin to diminish. You must use both sides of your brain to empower ESP. Once you decide to start to develop your sixth sense, it can be a wonderful adventure, offering you insights and guidance you may never have thought possible. All you have to do it set the intention to begin the journey, and you will absolutely begin to notice your intuition working for you. Faith is made up of Desire, Belief and Expectancy. I desire it to happen, I believe it will happen, I EXPECT it to happen. We function with our minds, every day at the level of BETA that is where we use sight, sound, smell, taste and touch, that is our Physical world. In the Inner Conscious Levels i.e. the Spiritual World. No time or space, i.e., ESP, we work at Alpha and Theta, what we shall do here is take ourselves to Alpha, using the following meditation.

Shen (spirit) - Qi ( energy) Jing (Physical)

We will now go to Level with the shen, qi, jing method. This is an exercise done with your eyes closed, preferably lying down, you may also do this sitting up, as long as you are able to relax. Take a deep breath and as you exhale, I want you to Tampa Bay Wellness

THEME - Intuition

EVERY DAY IN EVERY WAY I AM GETTING BETTER AND BETTER. think and visualize the energy jing, visualize the energy. In three different ways, the written jing, the free jing and the Divine, try to see the number in three different colors. You are now at one , the physical Level of relaxation, a Level of mind which is deeper then Level four. I will now draw your attention to different parts of your body to enhance this level of relaxation. I want you to relax your scalp. Feel the tingling sensation of the capillaries and veins beneath the scalp as you relax. Relax your forehead…….relax your face……relax your chin…..relax your throat…….relax your shoulders…..relax your chest both inside and outside….relax all of your organs, your heart, your lungs, your liver, spleen, relax your kidneys, relax everything in your abdomen, both interior and exterior, relax all the cells and organs there,……relax your hips…..relax your thighs….. relax your knees…… relax your calves…. relax your ankles….. relax your feet….. relax the bottoms of your feet. You are now in a deep healthier Level of mind than before. Take a deep breath and as you exhale, I would like you now to think and visualize the energy two, Qi times three different ways. The written Qi, and you are now at Level Qi, a deeper more healthier Level of mind the Level Jing. Level Qi is the mental level of relaxation. At Level Qi it is beneficial to think and visualize tranquil and peaceful scenes such as a woodland or a beach, at Level Qi negative thoughts or negative suggestions do not affect you. Noises will only take you into a deeper more healthy Level of Mind. Take a deep breath and as you exhale, I would like you to visualize and think of the Shen three time and three different ways. The written Shen, the level Shen, and you are at Level Shen, a deeper more healthy Level of Mind than Level Qi. Level Shen is your Basic Plane Level, and your 2nd Attention Shamanically, that maybe used for a purpose any purpose as long as it is in the best interest of humanity and benefits other human beings. At this Level of mind you may project your mind the anywhere on this planet, to any planet in the Galaxy, to any Galaxy in the Universe, indeed you my project our mind anywhere you chose. I am now going to count from ten to one. Each number that I speak will take you into a deeper, healthier Level of mind. 10-------9-----8-----deeper and deeper-------7------6------5-----deeper and deeper, healthier level of mind,

-------4------3-------deeper and deeper-----2-------1. You are now in a deeper, healthier Level of mind. Your are now learning to use your mind in a very special manner. The difference between geniuses and lay mentality is that geniuses use more of their minds and use them in a very special manner. Your increasing mental faculties are for serving humanity better. Every day in every way I am getting better and better. Positive thoughts, suggestions and images bring me benefits and advantages that I desire. I have full control over my sensing faculties at this Level and Depth of Mind and every other Level and Depth of Mind including the Outer Conscious Level. AND IT IS SO. I energize and maintain myself in a healthy way, physically, mentally and emotionally. I recognize and use the POWER OF THE PRESENT in energizing and focusing my life. In a moment I will count from one to five, when I speak the number five you will open your eyes, you will be wide awake, feeling fine and in excellent health, feeling better than before…………. You will feel as

though you have had the perfect amount of healthy restful sleep. One------two------three------- when I say the number five you will open your eyes feeling fine and in excellent health, feeling better than before. Four--------five. Open your eyes, you are feeling fine and in excellent health, feeling better than before………………………and may the rest of your life be the BEST of your life. And, it is so.

BODY - Aging

National Healthy Aging Month As we age, most of us better understand our abilities and our limitations, helping us make better decisions. We understand that nutrition and exercise play a vital role in how we feel, and that looking after ourselves on a daily basis can help us feel younger as we age, and younger than our true age. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are nearly 75 million baby boomers in America and with September being National Healthy Aging Month, Susan Bowerman, M.S., RD, CSSD, CSOWM, FAND – Director, Worldwide Nutrition Education and Training at Herbalife Nutrition, is sharing tips to help boomers “not go gentle into that good night…”

5 Tips to Help America’s Aging Population Stay Healthier and Happier Dealing with Hormonal Changes Hormonal changes are a fact of life for both men and women. These changes may be accompanied by weight gain, especially in the mid-section. Hormonal changes can also lead to disrupted sleep or mood changes, which can be very stressful. So in addition to staying active and watching your weight, it is also important to find balance in your life and perform stress-relieving activities. Yoga, meditation or simply engaging in a new activity may help you to deal with the effects of hormonal change.

Balancing Your Nutrition A healthy diet and active lifestyle is the best way to protect your health as you age. Balanced meals contain protein to keep you full and satisfied, plenty of fruits and veggies to provide vitamins and minerals, and just enough healthy fats to provide flavor. Fill about two-thirds of your plate with 30

healthy carbs such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans, and the remaining one-third low-fat proteins, such as fish, poultry or lean meat.

Maintaining Healthy Bones as You Age Strong, healthy bones are really built during adolescence and young adulthood. That’s because the body’s ability to store calcium in the bones peaks at about age 30, so this is a critical period during which you can maximize bone density. It’s important to get plenty of calcium in your diet and regularly engage in weight-bearing exercise at any age, but it’s particularly important when you’re younger to ensure bone health as you age. But that doesn’t mean all is lost if you’re older. Taking in adequate calcium every day (needs increase to from 1000 mg daily to about 1200 mg per day after age 50) and regular weight-bearing activity can help maintain bone strength.

Tampa Bay Wellness

Maintaining Muscle Mass and a Healthy Weight as You Age Building muscle mass can be done at any age. When you establish the right habits at a young age - which includes consuming adequate protein and engaging in resistance exercise - you’re more likely to continue those habits throughout your life. The amount of muscle mass you have determines, in large part, your resting metabolic rate. So, the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest. Building and maintaining muscle mass is one of the best defenses against “creeping obesity” - the slow, incremental upticks in your body fat and weight as you age.

Maintaining Healthy Skin as You Age

*Reiki and Theta wellness services available

The foods you put into your body, and the way you take care of your skin when you’re young, can affect the appearance of your skin as you age. Your skin relies on protein to manufacture its supporting structures, and plenty of fluid to help prevent dryness. Getting into the habit of cleansing, moisturizing and regularly using sunscreen when you’re young can help you to maintain a healthy complexion as you get older. Skin damage that happens when you’re young may not show up until decades later, so your best defense is to get in the habit of taking good care of your skin now.
