NEWS Moffit Cancer Center Awarded $450,000 TAMPA, Fla. – Moffitt Cancer Center recently announced that Andriy Marusyk, Ph.D was awarded a $450,000 research grant from Susan G. Komen. Marusyk is receiving one of 37 research grants looking into novel treatments for aggressive types of breast cancer. This year Komen is focusing on new treatments and understanding of the most lethal forms and stages of breast cancer. Marusyk is studying how cancer associated fibroblasts (CAFs), a type of cell that surrounds tumors, decreases the effectiveness of therapies against triple negative breast cancer. Triple negative breast cancer means that the breast cancer cells test negative for estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors and HER2. This causes the cells to not respond to hormonal therapy or therapies that target HER2 receptors.

His research is centered on the characterization of interactions between the malignant cells and tumor associated fibroblasts with the aim of developing means to overcome stromal resistance to anti-cancer therapies. About 10-20 percent of patients who are diagnosed breast cancer have triple negative disease. Triple negative tumors are often aggressive and have a poorer prognosis for the first five years after diagnosis. This form of breast cancer is more likely to affect younger people. Marusyk’s research will help the long-term goal of reducing breast cancer deaths dramatically in the United States. 4

news The 10 Biggest Global concerns, According to Millennials
rom climate change and destruction of nature to lack of education and employment, here’s what’s worrying the world’s young adults. It seems that just about every generation gets blamed for something; those born in the 1980s and 90s are no different. Going by the accounts of the snarky media, one might come to the conclusion that millennials have, basically, ruined everything … all while eating avocado toast washed down with rose slushies and a side order of ennui. But as a card-carrying member of Generation X – raised on a steady diet

of MTV, punk rock and an unquenchable taste for irony – I say it’s time we start listening to the “kids.” I have to admit, based on the results of the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers Survey 2017, it looks like they’re on the right track. For its third annual survey, the forum included 31,000 18-to-35-yearolds from 186 countries and explores perceptions on key issues, from climate change to conflict to food security and more. This year, climate change was the “winner” of worrisome, selected as the top concern by nearly half of the participants. Over 91 percent of respondents answered “agree” and “strongly agree” with the statement “science has proven that humans are responsible for climate change.” And while many may consider millennials to be of the lazy persuasion, 78.1 percent said they would be willing to change their lifestyle to protect the environment. Seems only fair to give this generation of young adults the support they need to drive this planet toward a viable and sustainable future. As Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman World Economic Forum, writes in the introduction to the report: “And now that young people have spoken, the greatest response that we can provide is to demonstrate that we NOVEMBER 2017
are listening. And the best way to do this is to ensure that these insights influence our decisions and our actions as leaders. No action is too small because every action tells all young people that their views matter and that by sharing their ideas openly and in a constructive way, they can actually contribute to making the world a better place.” Here’s how the concerns stacked up. And for the record, the survey was offered in 14 languages, including all official languages of the United Nations. 1. Climate change / destruction of nature (48.8%) 2. Large scale conflict / wars (38.9%) 3. Inequality (income, discrimination) (30.8%) 4. Poverty (29.2%) 5. Religious conflicts (23.9%) 6. Government accountability and transparency / corruption (22.7%) 7. Food and water security (18.2%) 8. Lack of education (15.9%) 9. Safety / security / wellbeing (14.1%) 10. Lack of economic opportunity and employment (12.1%) The whole report is a fascinating read and there are meaningful insights to be gleaned. Tampa Bay Wellness

THEME - Transitions
Transitions: Transformation through Meditation By: Charles Zinner The purpose of meditation is personal transformation. ~Henepola Gunaratana A New Year approaches and with it, we all have simultaneously, a perceived future full of bright promise, and paradoxically contrasted fear and anxiety. Fear, anxiety, despair and depression are rampant in most of our society. What would happen if we knew of a way to bypass our brain’s lower instincts (fear, anger, aggression, warring and hostility) to potentially achieve a calm, relaxed attitude in all ways and all times. There would be no depression or fear and it would mean realistically having real expectations of positivity, peace and total fulfillment. There is such a way, and that way is to meditate. Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) at UMass, described mindfulness (meditation) as paying attention, on purpose, to the present moment, curiously and non-judgmentally. In other words, Be here Now. Emotions can then be dealt with, contemplated deeply, and the internal truth of ourselves will lead us to our right path. Meditation helps reduces stress, as well as improve our health. Clinically researched with positive scientific findings, meditation is simply taking a few minutes a day to relax, clear one’s mind, and focus on being in the moment. It can improve our lives in at least seven ways. The seven ways meditation positively affects our life and changes our brain are: improve brain aging, reduce “monkey mind”, achieve effects rivaling the positive aspects of anti- depressants, change the structure of the brain to better regulate emotions – bypassing the animal brain to higher functioning areas (leading to calmness), improves attention and focus, relieves anxiety, can lead to breaking addictions, and helps school kids achieve more positive results. Because of the plasticity (changeability) of the brain, meditation actually changes brain structure and functioning. It has been 12
seen that our brain’s primitive reactive “fight or flight” center, the seat of our fearful and anxious emotions, decreases in size as the front part of the brain enlarges. Meditation causes the brain’s front (prefrontal cortex) to actually thicken (enlarge). The prefrontal cortex is associated with regulating conflict and negative emotions, that is, it leads to higher reasoning, calmness and thoughtful action.
will be positively affected. Teachers and staff experienced more calm on the campuses with the result they were able to concentrate on teaching. Students who were meditating also took this home and influenced their parents and peers by sharing meditative techniques. Also, meditation programs have been instituted in correctional facilities in the US and other countries with positive results.
By increasing the “calm” pathway and negating the “fear” route, the brain is habituated into this higher, calmer mode. In short, we learn to deal with our emotions in a more mature, relaxed and responsible manner. As background for practical application of the aforementioned information, educational research found that poor social-emotional skills in early schooling and life, helps predict later negative issues in areas to include education, employment, criminal activity, substance abuse, and mental health. Practical results of school meditation programs resulted in decreased suspensions, with increases in GPAs and attendance. Perhaps as importantly, with the decreases in student anxiety, aggression and interpersonal conflicts, teacher stress and morale
This is because prisoners, as well as staff, experience stressful conditions which lead to emotional explosiveness, conflict and life and death situations. Meditation leads to self-control, cooperation and self-respect. Results from meditation programs in multiple California prisons (mirrored worldwide) are as follows: -More than a 30% reduction in recidivism rates -Fewer rule infractions in prison -Less criminal thinking, psychological distress and trauma symptoms -Decreased anxiety, depression, fatigue and anger -Increased spiritual well-being, optimism and purposefulness While meditation is not the entire answer to all issues, there is a lot of evidence that it

benefits those practicing it consistently. All it takes is a few minutes such as 15-20 minutes daily. It lowers the brain’s waves to a calm relaxed state – eliminating mind chatter or “monkey mind”- and leading to clarity of thought, focus, better decision-making and deeper insights. Relaxation leads to stress relief and calmness, lowers stress hormone levels (cortisol) and helps us align with our higher spiritual self. Individuals wishing to improve or change their life circumstances can benefit from all of the aforementioned aspects. Many who have started and continued meditating, describe life changes to be astounding as their lives changed dramatically. All of the old will drop away and you will find new friends and circumstances. Meditation is, ultimately, a very effective tool for beneficial change and personal transformation! A simple willingness or desire to improve our lives through this relaxing technique of meditation is all it takes. The effects are powerful and are totally beneficial. Enjoy your New Year….Your new year and life starts the moment you start meditating! “Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.” Buddha

BODY - Foods www.mercola.com
By Dr. Mercola
pices are a wonderful addition to foods and beverages because they can add just the right flair. Nutmeg, for instance, lends quiet warmth and complexity, in desserts like apple crisp and in vegetables like spinach, as in the savory Indian dish, saag paneer. And paprika lends mild sweetness to meat dishes and goulash. But flavor is just one trait that makes spices such an integral part of cooking and eating. They can also be incredibly good for your health and help you reach your weight goals. One of the great things about adding spices of any kind to your meals is that the flavor can help you feel more satisfied, so you don’t feel so deprived when you eat foods with fewer calories, says Jaclyn London, senior clinical dietician at Mount Sinai Hospital. London adds that in regard to spices, “The key is that all the ones we talk about for weight loss or maintenance have anti-inflammatory properties and a flavor profile that may help limit overall calorie intake.” With that, here are several examples of spices to try in your quest to lose weight.
diabetes or elevated glucose [or] triglyceride … levels may benefit from the regular inclusion of cinnamon in their daily diet.” Nutritionist and author Marilyn Glenville, Ph.D., the former president of the Food and Health Forum at the UK Royal Society of Medicine, warns that people with bleeding disorders or anyone taking blood thinners such as warfarin or heparin should avoid cinnamon, as it contains the blood-thinning compound coumarin.
The study involved 11 patients, some of whom were given placebos, and concluded with the statement that ginger encouraged more antral contractions in comparison between the two, which conceivably promoted more rapid gastric emptying. It also boosts insulin sensitivity, which London explains is due to ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties, reducing fatty acids and promoting weight stability.
Warming Spices to Narrow Your Waistline Cinnamon
While cinnamon is delicious and warming, it also kicks in your metabolism. Studies also show it helps reduce blood glucose levels and improve insulin resistance for people with type 2 diabetes. In fact, in one study published in Diabetes Care concluded that it: “Reduced serum glucose [and] triglyceride … levels in people with type 2 diabetes. Because [it] would not contribute to caloric intake, [people with] type 2
There’s a popular legend that Confucius ate ginger at every meal. One reason why may be explained in a study reported by the European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hematology, which explored the effects of ginger on “gastric motility,” aka how quickly food moved through the colon instead of sticking around and causing problems.
Referred to as the “queen of spices” in India and Nepal, cardamom is one of the most expensive spices but still a very popular ingredient in tea and coffee. It’s related to cinnamon and is shown in studies to help lower blood glucose levels and regulate your insulin, as well as optimize your cholesterol levels.
Tampa Bay Wellness
Studies say this little-known spice, a thermogenic herb, has dozens of other valuable health benefits and uses, besides being antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory, which can sooth your gastrointestinal system and enhance your metabolic function. Cardamom is regarded as a diuretic in Ayurvedic tradition. One study also compared it favorably with commercial products designed to relieve weight retention, colic, diarrhea and constipation. It’s also been noted for balancing gut flora to optimize digestion.
Spicy Foods Offer Much More Than Heat Chili powder
You’ve heard the term “active ingredient.” Well, the active ingredient in chili powder is capsaicin. London calls chili powder a “triple threat” because as it boosts your energy, it can help you eat slower. Additionally, a sprinkle of chili powder on your food may inspire you to eat more healthy plant-based offerings rather than an extra helping of bread or rice. All three advantages relate to eating less, which may be what you’re hoping for. Capsaicin also stimulates brown fat, a type of fat that generates heat by helping you burn calories, which is why it’s being explored as a tool for weight
loss, healthy metabolism and more.
Recent animal studies note that piperine’s ability to inhibit new fat cells from forming, known as adipogenesis, helps reduce waist size and body fat and optimizes cholesterol levels. With similar effects to capsaicin, Europeans have used black pepper for thousands of years in traditional medicine to treat inflammation and digestive problems. Its effectiveness is due in part to a compound known as piperine. Daily Mail notes: “Piperine has similar effects to capsaicin in chilies and is what gives black pepper its heat. It’s the heat which helps prevent the formation of new fat cells, especially if you decide to indulge in a mouth-searing meal featuring pepper and chili.”
Known for jazzing up Southwestern fare, cumin is also capable of suppressing your appetite and keeping fat cells from showing up again after weight loss.
Ginseng, particularly the Siberian variety, is known for speeding up your metabolism and giving you a “second wind” of energy, which may be why tea with ginseng has been a “thing” all over Asia and Europe for centuries. Siberian ginseng is known as
an adaptogen, which Daily Mail describes as something that “works according to what your body needs.” Glenville says it provides energy when required, and helps combat stress and fatigue when you are under pressure.
Cayenne pepper is noted for a phenomenon known as thermogenesis, which consumes oxygen in your body and can result in weight loss. It contains capsaicin, which gives it its heat, but also promotes fat oxidation and increases fat burning by as much as 16 percent. Capsaicin has been shown to have potential for promoting metabolic and vascular health. Further, the same study shows it has “favorable effects” on atherosclerosis, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, non-alcoholic fatty liver, cardiac hypertrophy and stroke risk. But while spice is good, Eat This observes there’s such a thing as too much: “Too much spicy food can send you to Toilet Town, but a little hit of capsaicin, the compound that gives chili pepper its powerful kick, has proven to reduce belly fat, suppress appetite and boost thermogenesis.”

We have heard the term the I AM that I AM, but have not stepped into the experiences of living with the full knowledge, connection and wisdom of the great spirit, the I AM. Each person is connected to the I AM. It is your great spirit, which was and is part of the great design of Creator for humanity.

This knowledge was known in past and ancient mystery schools and at present, is taught publicly, in schools of knowledge, workshops, classes and books. There is an expansion in consciousness that is happening now and allowing us to know the truth of our existence: we are connected to this great spirit I AM; we are souls embodied in this incarnation to have the experiences on Earth; we have had many past lives; we are Mind-Body-Soul-Spirit. We have lived without the knowledge and integration of the great I AM. It was veiled, a mystery and thus we experienced duality, illusion, and separation from Source. We thought we were alone, believing that when we died there would be no more life and that we are the only beings in the cosmos. These false beliefs kept us small and limited and thus, we had limited experiences, which had been part of the Divine plan to allow us to gain wisdoms from living in the 3D, limited consciousness reality, until a time such as now. More truth is being realized each day as people awaken and ascend to higher levels of consciousness. The vibration within people and the planet is rising due to the awakening Cosmic energies that have been coming to Earth through the gateway energies and thus causing a momentum of awakening for more and more people to expand consciousness. The highest truths are unity or universal consciousness and that Divine love is the highest vibration. We are being reconnected to spirit, the I AM, higher self, to everyone on Tampa Bay Wellness
THEME - Transitions this planet and the cosmos. It is our consciousness that is reconnecting. The truth is we were never separate, only in our amnesia at the level of embodiment. Everyone has a higher self, I AM and spirit guides at all times. We have never been alone. Once you awaken to the truth of this, you can begin to connect and communicate consciously with your higher self, I AM and your spirit guides for higher knowledge, truth and wisdom. The spirit guidance is already linked up for you. As you communicate consciously, you will receive more intuitive guidance, clues, answers and knowledge so that you will to be able to step onto the path of your destiny to fulfill higher life purpose, gain in your wisdoms and provide love in action or service to others. As more and more people awaken in the next few years, we will grow, expand and uplift existence on Earth and be able to experience more peace, love, harmony and abundance in our communities, in our lifestyles and our relationships. Through the spirit led guidance, we will bring in new ideas, technologies, discoveries and creations. There is much to look forward to as we expand our consciousness. Learn about and seek ways to expand consciousness: conscious breath work; energy practices like yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi; meditation; sound healing-mantra, crystal bowls; energy healing modalities; workshops--on higher self, I AM, spiritual guidance; books on alchemy, love, raising vibrations and spirit related topics. Enjoy the new pathways that are opening up for all of us to experience more love, peace, creativity and higher consciousness.

Sleep Like You Mean It:
5 Reasons Leaders Should Sleep More
n January 1986, just seconds after launch, the space shuttle Challenger exploded, killing everyone on board instantly. According to research in 1988, select managers directly involved in the launch arrived at 1 a.m. that morning, having only slept a maximum of two hours. Additionally, in 1989, third mate Gregory Cousins was allegedly sleeping at the wheel of the Exxon Valdez supertanker. When the boat drifted off course, this made it impossible for him to turn it around and avoid disaster. The crew reportedly had just finished a 22-hour shift loading the oil into the tank. The third mate allegedly only had a “catnap” in the 16 hours prior to the crash. Lastly, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, “impaired performance resulting from fatigue” was a factor in the 1999 American Airlines Flight 1420 crash that killed 11, including the captain, and injured over 105 people. Only 24 people walked away from that crash without injury. Circadian, a global leader that provides workforce performance and safety solutions for businesses, stated, “Sleep deprivation is an issue that is often ignored, yet frequently the root cause of decreased productivity, accidents, incidents and mistakes which cost companies billions of dollars each year.” Ten of the top sleep deprivation dangers in the workplace include: decreased communication, deterioration of performance, increased distractibility, driving impairment, an increase in the number of errors made by sleep-deprived individuals, poor cognitive memory and assimilation, poor mood appropriate behavior, greater risk-taking behavior, the inability to make necessary adjustments when needed. The more each of this issues is increased, the more sleep deprivation is compounded in an individual. So the question that must be asked is whether or not the above scenarios would have resulted in more positive outcomes if the people who were responsible for others’ lives on those fateful days had truly been rested before starting their shifts. This is why I’ve set out to solve common problems many commonly experience during the night, allowing them to achieve balance in their overall life through a consistently goodnight’s sleep. When the body achieves a natural flow with the mind, it makes a difference in how a person experiences the world. This means making a commitment to being truly asleep when sleeping and truly present while 18
awake. We each have an opportunity to put happiness within reach by building the right foundation for their lives, which starts with a truly restorative night’s sleep. If recuperative sleep is good for people in general, think about the edge leaders in each of their fields who maintain quality, restorative sleep can have over the competition. Below are easy-to-follow strategies which prove why quality sleep is so important to getting ahead.
It is no surprise that professional athletes are always on the lookout for every single advantage they can utilize in order to outperform their opponents. With a career that spans a maximum of 15 years, they want to stay on top of their game for the duration. “Brady is the healthiest great champion the NFL has ever had, both physically and mentally” (Sally Jenkins, The Washington Post ). The longtime New England Patriots quarterback, with multiple Super Bowl victories and MVP awards, is widely regarded as an athlete whose training and determination pushed him from a mediocre draft position to the most-revered and respected professional football player of his generation. He is very open about his approach to a more natural, healthier way of exercising, training and living which challenges some commonly held assumptions around health and wellness. He makes lifestyle choices that amplify and extend his performance as well as his quality of life. Better Sleep = Better Temperament = Better Relationships = Greater Success As stated above, those leaders who are well rested report feeling happier and less stressed than their counterparts. RelationNOVEMBER 2017
ships are major components to winning in the business world. According to Steve Tobak, “The key to business success is winning and keeping customers. And the key to winning and keeping customers is, and has always been, relationships.” According to Paul O’Brien in Business 2 Community, “It is known that if a strong relationship is in place, employees will be more productive, more efficient, create less conflict and will be more loyal.” Leaders who are well rested can model positive, healthy relationships with their employees, which trickles down to their customers. By giving one’s body the sleep it needs to perform optimally, CEOs are able to give 100% of themselves in their personal and professional relationships which helps relieve stress, maintains positive mental health and leads to a more balanced work/leisure lifestyle. What activities a leader engages in outside of work are just as significant for their work productivity as what activities they engage in while working. Stuart Brown explains that “for wellbeing to really become a value, one would need to practice wellbeing in and outside the work environment.” Truly engaging in deep, restful sleep, while working less hours, will result in more productivity because both mentally and physically all systems will be working at optimal level.
Improved Sleep Helps Leaders Start Their Day the Right Way
While the following habits may seem trivial, when added together, they help create a leader mentality, a leader lifestyle that translates to success in and out of the boardroom. According to psychological reTampa Bay Wellness
search, “People who make their bed in the morning are happier and more successful than those who don’t.” Think about it this way instead – by taking 30 seconds when one first gets out of bed, your first accomplishment has already occurred, putting one in a “winning” mindset from the outset. Many successful leaders start their day early. This is only successful, though, with a reasonable, consistent bedtime routine if one wants optimal results. Upon rising, for the first 60 minutes don’t engage in any work related activities such as checking email, social media or even watching the news. Instead wake your brain up gradually with meditation, a healthy breakfast and exercise, engaging in activities that feed your soul, before jumping into the business of the day. Once you have successfully taken the time to nourish your body and soul, it’s time to start knocking out the mindful assignments before the phone starts ringing and people vie for one’s attention helps leaders maintain that sense of accomplishment and productivity. Avoiding caffeine is another great strategy which gives successful leaders an edge over others. While people assume they perform better with caffeine, it’s actually detrimental to most systems in one’s body. Because of its spikes, valleys and addictive quality, one actually underperforms when relying on America’s drug
of choice. By nurturing one’s body in the positive ways mentioned above, healthy eating, deep, reparative sleep and regular exercise actually produce higher quantities and quality of energy than caffeine. After a few days without this stimulant, leaders find they develop more confidence and function better without it.
Related to the caffeine addiction, which creates jitteriness, agitation and irritability when consumed in high quantities and inconsistently throughout the day, those with sleep deprivation are usually more impatient and make poorer decisions than their counterparts. A study from UC Berkeley “found that after a poor night’s sleep, the parts of the brain associated with automatic behavior were extra active, while the frontal lobes which affect self-control were more inhibited.” Therefore, leaders who are sleep deprived are more likely to respond instinctively rather than making conscious, healthy decisions. Another study from Clemson University found that people who didn’t get enough sleep had a “higher risk of being impulsive and distracted, as well as (made) poor decisions.” Successful leaders need to be able to make great decisions, especially in stressful situations and be the atmosphere of the company that they would like to project to their customers. A sleep-de-
prived leader will have a more difficult time accomplishing that goal. According to Vaselli, when one sleeps, the glymphatic system, known as the brain’s cleaning system, goes into overdrive. This purges your brain of “organic waste materials that build up during waking hours, removing unwanted proteins and metabolic waste.” By removing this waste, it protects your body from Alzheimer’s and other neurological disorders.
Leadership, like football, and some would say life in general, is a game of inches. Tom Brady changed his whole lifestyle, going against the common practices of his teammates, to gain those inches to his advantage, resulting in even winning Super Bowls by mere inches. Al Pacino sums it up best from Every Given Sunday: “You find out that life is just a game of inches. In either game, life or football, the margin for error is so small. I mean one half step too late or too early, you don’t quite make it. The inches we need are everywhere around us. They are in every break of the game, every minute, every second. On this team, we fight for that inch ‘cause we know when we add up all those inches, that’s going to make the difference between winning and losing.”
23 Global Food Companies Commit to Preserve Brazil’s Cerrado Savanna

Conservationists welcome move as Cerrado is cleared faster than Amazon.
wenty-three leading food companies today signaled that they are “committed to halting forest loss associated with agricultural commodity production” in one of the world’s most vital ecosystems, Brazil’s Cerrado savanna. At an event hosted by The Prince of Wales’s International Sustainability Unit and Unilever, the companies expressed support for the objectives defined in the Cerrado Manifesto, a call to action for the elimination of deforestation and conversion of native vegetation in the Cerrado, which about 60 leading Brazilian researchers and social and environmental organizations signed in September. Covering more than a quarter of Brazil’s land area, the Cerrado is home to thousands of species of plants and animals, and millions of people, including diverse indigenous communities. In 2015, it yielded 45 million metric tons of soy and 74 million cattle. At the same time, however, it is being cleared faster than the Amazon. “The Cerrado feeds billions of people from Brasilia to Beijing,” said Mauricio Voivodic, executive director of WWF-Brazil, “and to continue doing so, it needs intact habitats, rich biodiversity, fertile soil, fresh water, and a stable climate. We applaud companies endorsing the Cerrado Manifesto because they’re sending a clear message to the market that we can meet tomorrow’s demand on the cropland and pastureland we already have; in fact, we can’t afford not to.” “Supply chain solutions reverberate across the entire planet, protecting America’s wildlife and all wildlife across the globe,” said Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation. “By working with companies to improve industry practices, we are moving toward decoupling agricultural production and habitat conversion, guaranteeing that future demand can be met without further harm to vital, biodiverse ecosystems like the Cerrado.” “Our research indicates that there is enough cleared and suitable land to triple soy area in the Cerrado,” said Lisa Rausch, researcher at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Most of this cleared and suitable land is currently being used as pasture, though it is also nearly all in very close proximity to existing soy silos and could be converted to agriculture, especially as the ranching sector undergoes intensification.” The original 23 companies signing the statement of support for the objectives of the Cerrado Manifesto are Ahold Delhaize NV, Ajinomoto Co, Inc., Carrefour, Colgate-Palmolive Company, Co-operative Group Ltd, ICA Gruppen AB, IKEA Food Services AB, J Sainsburys Plc, Kellogg Company, Lidl UK GmbH, L’Oréal SA, Mars Inc., McDonald’s Corporation, METRO AG, Marks and Spencer Group Plc, Nando’s Chickenland Ltd, Nestlé S.A., Nutreco NV, NorgesGruppen ASA, Tesco Stores Plc, Unilever, Waitrose Ltd, and Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. 20
ou know how Iron Man gets a constant, real-time feed from instruments monitoring every aspect of his surroundings? That’s cool, but it’s also fiction. The Copernicus earth observation program might not top Iron Man’s suit, but if you multiply Copernicus’ cool by the reality coefficient, it rocks! Last month the European Space Agency successfully sent the newest member of the Copernicus Sentinel satellite team into orbit. The new satellite, Sentinel-5P (aka S5P), will collect data on earth’s atmosphere with a special interest in the potent climate change gas, methane, as well as substances such as nitrogen dioxide, ozone, formaldehyde, sulphur dioxide, and carbon monoxide. This data serves many ends: monitoring will help scientists better understand atmospheric processes such as how the hole

GREEN LIVING in the ozone layer reacts to trace chemicals in the atmosphere. It can help hold countries to their pollution reduction pledges, by providing real data on the amounts of certain pollutants in the air -- and reduce deaths attributed to these pollutants, estimated to exceed the number of deaths from AIDS and malaria combined, as well as guide strategic policies related to managing climate change. The “P” in this satellite’s name actually stands for “precursor” because the S5P is a stop-gap satellite, intended to ease the transition as older satellites go off-line and until the planned launch of the Sentinel 5 mission in 2021, which will further extend the monitoring of atmospheric composition. The Sentinel-5P works its magic thanks to the TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument), the “most advanced multispectral imaging spectrometer to date.” The spectrometer reads the sunlight reflected back into space from the earth and particles in its atmosphere. It can detect the unique fingerprints of target gases. The Tropomi detects a wide range of gases thanks to its ability to read many wavelengths, from the ultraviolet and visible (270–500 nm) to the near-infrared (675–775 nm) and shortwave infrared (2305–2385 nm) spectral bands. S5P joins a network of important earth observation missions, run by NASA as well as ESA. These guardians of the galaxy (or at least the part of the galaxy we depend on for life) help forecast weather, manage emergencies, map the lands and oceans, and even assess the health of our planet’s vegetation. All of the data gathered by the Copernicus program is available for free.
EAR CLEANING TIPS
Before you begin, gather your supplies. Keep in mind that this can get messy, it is advisable not to clean your pet’s ears next to your best furniture or while wearing your nicest outfit. You will need: Olive or Almond Oil* Ear Cleaner* Cotton Balls or a Wash cloth Cotton Swabs – use to clean the small crevices of the ear flap only. Ear Medication – if prescribed by your veterinarian To remove wax and debris: Step 1 - To soften and remove the wax, first fill the ear canal(s) with Olive or Almond oil, massage the ear base(s), then allow your pet to shake its head. Step 2 - Fill the ear canal(s) with ear cleaner. Massage ear base(s) gently, this will further loosen debris and wax. Let your pet shake its head. Step 3 - Repeat step two twice more. Step 4 - Use the cotton balls or a wash cloth to wipe away debris from the opening of the ear. Step 5 - Use the cotton swabs to clean debris from the small crevices of the ear flap. DO NOT insert the cotton swab into the ear canal(s). If your veterinarian has prescribed ear medication for your pet wait fifteen minutes after cleaning and then apply as directed. For routine cleansing (no debris evident): Fill ear canal(s) with ear cleaner. Gently massage ear base(s) then allow your pet to shake its head. Clean outer ear area with cotton balls or a wash cloth. We recommend that this be done one to two times weekly and after bathing or swimming. * Some pets respond better if the oil or cleaner is gently heated by placing the bottle in warm water for five minutes before use.

FEATURE - Intuition
How to tame this internal noise By Marcella Zinner
onkey Mind is also known as a Mental noise that is constant chatter of the mind. It is the inner conversation or inner monologue that goes on, many times, constantly in the mind. It is possible that you are not always unaware of this mental noise, because it has become a deeply embedded habit. This mental noise is like a background noise that may never cease, from the moment of waking up in the morning, to the moment of falling
asleep at night. Often, it even prevents you from falling asleep. It is a sort of inner voice that analyzes everything. It is a voice in the head that just keeps talking and talking! The mind also repeats the same thoughts over and over again, like in a loop, like a record that got stuck. If these are positive thoughts that’s fine. However, too often, these are negative thoughts that intensify stress, worry, anger or frustration. These are thoughts that you absolutely do not need.
These mental noises are: Thoughts that repeat themselves like a tape that keeps playing the same tune. 1. Reliving negative past situations or visualizing fears over and over again. 2. Dwelling on the past or fearing the future. This prevents us from enjoying the present. 3. Never being here. Always thinking on something else. Analyzing the past, the future, things we need or want to do, our day, yesterday and the distant past. 4. Almost all involuntary thinking and daydreaming are some sort of mental noise. This is often a constant background noise, which often intrudes into foreground in the middle of everything we do. Too often, this is tiring and exhausting, and makes us impractical and lazy. This constant mental chatter also makes us miss opportunities, due to insufficient attention to what is happening around us. Wouldn’t it be great if you could achieve a state where you can think when you need to, like solving a problem or making a plan, and then after that just switch off the mind? The Buddha, who coined the word some two and a half millennia ago, termed this mental state “Kapicitta.” He defined it best when he said; “Just as a monkey swinging through the trees grabs one branch and lets it go only to seize another, so too, that which is called thought, mind or consciousness arises and disappears continually both day and night.” So why does this Tampa Bay Wellness
FEATURE - Body/Mind monkey rule our thoughts, when we are supposed to be in charge?
Causes of the Monkey Mind With the chattering monkey of our internal monologue, it becomes impossible to be present and focused on the moment we are in. Instead we are “carried away through the treetops!” Because of our innate capacity for thinking, it is easy for the Monkey Mind to feed on stimuli. When we give our attention to too many things at once, spend our lives rushing from one appointment to another and focus on what we are yet to do instead of what we are currently doing, these are like dozens of trees with enticing fruit for our monkey to chase. We actually need the monkey on our side. He’s useful in that in our busy lives he keeps on top of things. The problem occurs when, like all small monkeys with lots of things to do, he’s quite excitable.
Going Ape! The result of the Monkey Mind results in mental and physical fatigue. We’ve all had days where it feels like we’ve achieved nothing, yet we can’t relax. Because we cannot relax, the monkey mind says, “Hey, why aren’t you relaxing? Is it any surprise that cases of depression, anxiety and stress disorders are on the rise?
Taming Your Monkey The Buddhist perspective recommends quiet meditation or a focused intention on whatever you are doing at the moment. This is called mindfulness. Other techniques that can be used to harmonize with your monkey include moving meditations such as Qigong, Yoga and Tai Chi. After all, sitting quietly and not thinking is hard for us to do at first. With the focus relocated to the body from the mind, these internal arts allow us to use our

physical forms to cultivate the intrinsic stillness of the soul. The endorphin rush of physical exercise such as running similarly quietens the Monkey Mind. Brainwave Entrainment is a process that tunes our brainwaves into the states usually achieved through long hours of meditation practice. Alpha binaural beats music seems to induce a heightened degree of presence and awareness, which quiets the monkey mind. Playing this type of quiet music while working can easily produce brainwaves into a healthy balance. Certain vitamin supplements are also effective to quiet the brain into balance and healthy patterns. When our minds are calm and quiet, we can begin to increase our awareness, which then contributes to a higher consciousness, leading to a more peaceful, happier and productive life.
Call NOVEMBER 2017
Horoscopes ARIES March 21st – April 19th
You might feel vulnerable because a new relationship is going to a deeper level. Or perhaps your inner spiritual work is opening doors in your longterm partnership. Watch out for starting little arguments when you’ve been feeling intimate. Alert your loved one that you could create a “push away” and be open to let him/her tell you if it happens. In meditation, you’re on the verge of a breakthrough, so beware of feeling bored or being inconsistent. The sense of spiritual intimacy with the Universe can challenge you as well.
LEO July 23 – August 22
Make your home beautiful by releasing stuff you don’t need. Add new pieces that represent the “new you”. Having an “environmental make over” reminds you of the “remodeling” you’re doing in your emotional world. Your meditation practice reaps many rewards of letting go of old subconscious patterns so you feel happy and free . . . especially in areas of family, childhood issues and prosperity blocks. Create affirmations and say them in the mirror with enthusiasm until you believe them!
TAURUS April 20th – May 20th
May 21st– June 20th
This is a wonderful relationship month! Balance your desire to work on yourself emotionally and spiritually with the ability to open to the joy of the moment. Sometimes when you see your imperfections and how you can grow and change, you feel undeserving of love. Meditate on swimming in an ocean of belonging and acceptance as you are today. You are loved while “being imperfect”! You can receive even more as you evolve. This same idea applies to financial abundance. You deserve wealth now and in the future!
You love words, idea and debating. This can come across as argumentative, when actually you’re passionate about discussing concepts. Observe this and see when you need to make others aware of the difference between your intense excitement and anger. Yet, it’s important to meditate on how you can subconsciously cause arguments when you fear intimacy and “need” to push someone away. Practice feeling still and safe in your own skin. Also practice quieting your mind and being ok with inner silence.
August 23 to September 22
Sept. 23rd – Oct. 22nd
Thinking self-loving thoughts and speaking kind words of affirmation to yourself changes your life! Also don’t complain about circumstances or speak negative ideas about yourself. Yes, you can improve yourself and your life . . . but first love and forgive yourself, others and circumstances. Be poised, present and soothing — just as you’d be for someone else! Then your mind will be receptive to intuitive solutions, which you can lovingly implement. Also, it’s a great prosperity month!
It’s an amazing prosperity month, so meditate on the spiritual principles of money . . . and also on your self-worth so you can increase your capacity to receive financial blessings! Abundance can also come in the form of feeling more love from others; eating higher quality food to honor your body; shedding negative beliefs about sexuality so you can feel more pleasure; and feeling connected to your life force to experience more joy. Set goals with loving enthusiasm and follow through because you deserve the results!
CANCER June 21st – July 22nd
As a relationship develops, be aware of unconscious pattern family patterns that hijack your emotions. Of course, be vigilant of this happening in long standing partnerships, too! The Universe wants to heal your heart and let love flourish. Observe yourself for sudden mood shifts, negative thinking, or wanting to criticize your loved one. Don’t act on those impulses! Write them down, and meditate on their source. Insights will come, then you can have open conversation and move forward positively with choices based in the present, not automated reactions form the past!
SCORPIO October 23 to November 21
Happy birthday Scorpio! Wonderful changes happen in relationships! Meditate to forgive and release past difficulties so you can open up to what life offers you now! Make a list of disappointments, betrayals, and hurt feelings that happened over the past two years (a Mars cycle). Maybe these events reflect a longer pattern and childhood issues. Sorting through subconscious past pain brings it to light so it dissolves. Forgive yourself, too, because you are worthy of love from others, the Universe, and from yourself!
Nov. 22nd – Dec. 21st
Dec. 22nd – Jan. 19th
Jan. 20th – Feb. 18th
Feb. 19th – March 20th
It’s awesome to dream and fantasize about a fulfilling future, but also use your imagination to make a specific plan to manifest your ideal life! You could have weekly accountability meetings with a spiritually-minded friend who believes in your possibilities. You’ll take actions that lead to the success your soul has already created for you! Whether career, health, relationships or prosperity, you can achieve it if you keep moving ahead step by step each day, and not just thinking about it.
This is an awesome career month! You can get a great new job or a significant promotion. Your intuition is especially strong now, so meditation gives you “insider tips” for even more success. You’ll be able to figure out problems easily, or know how to deal with difficult characters at work. Be sure to balance work with play. Make new friends, or explore new hobbies. Even “rediscovering” old friends can be surprising as you find out you have more in common that you thought, or you inspire each other in different ways that enrich you both.
Like Capricorns, it’s a great career month! Meditate on prosperity; read books on spirituality and money; and put those ideas into practice. Begin a tithing practice to reap incredible abundance! Try active forms of meditation this month and next — yoga, qigong, walking meditation, or even ecstatic dance. Movement quiets your mind more easily than just sitting. You’ll also get intuitions about handling family issues. Even just your spiritual centeredness shifts them when you’re around!
You’ll have many breakthroughs in your ability to trust and to release fears of intimacy. Meditate to remember past wounds, betrayals and disappointments. Forgive these experiences, knowing the past doesn’t determine your future. Yet be open to see patterns so you don’t repeat them. Make sure you bond with those who honor your thoughts and feelings . . . and be brave enough to be your authentic self with those people! You can also have good news about work, or even start a friendship with a colleague.

The Integrative Medicine Wheel By William Collinge, PhD
onfused about what the term “integrative medicine” really means? The The Integrative Medicine Wheelsm can help. It illustrates the spectrum of therapies that come together to form the field of integrative medicine. This is a practical tool you can use in communicating with your physician and others on your healthcare team about treatment options for a given health condition, and complementary relationships among them. This principle of complementarity is at the heart of integrative medicine. An abundance of research shows that integrating multiple forms of medicine in a complementary way can have an additive effect, and can be more effective than relying on any one approach by itself. For example: Cancer patients receiving chemotherapy and surgery have reduced side effects, faster recovery, and improved survival rates when they complement these treatments with mind/body medicine, herbal medicine, and nutritional medicine. Heart disease patients can halt and even reverse their disease process when they integrate mind/body medicine, nutritional medicine, lifestyle and behavior change with their regular treatment. People with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia can reduce their symptoms and improve their chances of recovery with combined use of mind/body medicine, nutritional medicine, lifestyle and behavior change, and pharmaceutical drugs. Preliminary findings indicate that antibiotic drugs to which bacteria have become resistant may become effective again when combined with certain herbs. The mounting research in this field indicates that virtually all health conditions can
benefit from an integrative approach. However, there is also evidence that certain combinations of therapies should be avoided. For example, some herbs can block the effects of certain drugs while other herbs can enhance or exaggerate them. The wise use of integrative medicine requires a balanced understanding of complementarities and conflicts.
The eight forms of medicine on The Integrative Medicine Wheelsm are described as follows: Mind/body Medicine uses the mechanisms of mind-body interaction to promote physical health. Methods include imagery, meditation, biofeedback, relaxation training, autogenic training, breath therapy, hypnosis, hypnotherapy, psychotherapy, and group therapy. Energy Medicine works with the energy system of the body or treats it with energies introduced from outside. Methods include acupuncture, homeopathy, hands-on healing, offbody energy field healing (Therapeutic Touch,

Reiki), qi gong (chi kung), spiritual healing, magnetic therapies, flower essences, energy meridian-based approaches to psychotherapy, neuro-energetic therapies, and electrical stimulation. Manipulative Therapies use physical manipulation to promote healing. Methods include chiropractic, osteopathy, cranio-sacral therapy, massage therapy, bodywork, physical therapy, and hydrotherapy. Surgery includes all forms of invasive surgical intervention. Pharmaceutical Drugs includes all forms of synthetic drugs, prescription and over-thecounter. Herbal Medicine includes Western herbs, Chinese Herbs, Ayurvedic herbs, and aromatherapy. Nutritional Medicine includes specific dietary therapies and nutritional supplements. Lifestyle & Behavior includes healthful eating habits, work habits, exercise, stress reduction, rest, sleep, social support, intimate relationships, and spiritual involvement.

THEME - Transitions

DEATH: OUR UNAVOIDABLE LIFE EVENT HELPING SELF AND OTHERS PREPARE
o far as we know, no one has managed to avoid death, and yet most of us avoid thinking, talking or planning for it our entire lives. Even more pronounced than our avoidance of “money consciousness”, is our inability to face reality “we are going to die”. In fact, all of us are dying moment by moment from the instant we are born. I recently spent a weekend retreat with Pema Chodron at Omega Institute, in her 81st year of life. She was in retreat all year her 80th year, and contemplated death – her own and through the teachings and wisdom of many scholars on the subject. The weekend with Pema allowed me to see the work to be done “at home”. I decided it is my work to share these teachings with all those in need now, and to those interested in preparing for their death or the 26
death of their loved ones in advance of the event. OUR LEGAL PREPARATION As in life, preparation is everything. Each of us should have a detailed plan of what we want to occur before, during and after our passing. This includes the following documents and legal agreements, which once created should be shared with all family members and/or significant others. Having a candid discussion with family members, friends or persons responsible to carry out your desires, regarding the content of the documents will make it easier and less burdensome at the time of your death, for all involved. And…give you peace of mind that things are “in order” when the time arrives. a. Written Living Will and Testament (to include exact funeral arrangements, etc.) NOVEMBER 2017

b. Power Attorney - Health Care Advocate c. Power of Attorney – Financial OUR EMOTIONAL/PSYCHOLOGICAL PREPARATION Our task in life is to begin “learning” how to prepare for death. The first step in learning how to prepare, is learning “who we are”. Practicing meditation provides time to discover our authentic nature, become familiar with our fears and short comTampa Bay Wellness
THEME - Transitions ings, and to learn how accept all aspects of ourselves. It allows us to discover and connect with our “basic human goodness” and teaches us how to live from our goodness consciously. • We must become comfortable with the idea of death. Learn how to see it as part of life, and be willing to consider what you want to accomplish before death arrives. Perhaps thinking about how you wish to be remembered or what you want your eulogy to entail. If you have not yet “finished” your bucket list or dream list, now is a good time to complete it. • Settle unfinished business. If there are certain people with whom you wish to make amends, find a way to do just that. Send a card or a note offering peace or forgiveness. Whether you believe in Karma or not, cleaning the slate now will ease any stress or anxiety caused by the thought of unfinished business at the moment of this life’s end. • Because we have no one to question as to what death is like, and what will happen to us during and after death, we can best prepare by spending time getting to know ourselves – really know ourselves, through introspection and meditation. Taking time to know and accept our “habits” gives us insight about what the unfinished business might entail. Befriending our fears and shortcomings now, can reduce the magnitude of these “thoughts” and frees us from angst during our end of life experience. If you have interest to read more about Karma, meditation and how to work with it, please refer to the following texts. 1. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying, Sogyal Rinpoche 2. Preparing to Die: Practical Advice and Spiritual Wisdom from the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition, Andrew Holecek 3. Start Where You Are, Pema Chodron 4. Death: The Final Stages of Growth, Elisabeth Kubler-Ross HELPING OTHERS If we are blessed to be with someone during their time of illness or time of eminent passing, we can comfort them in many ways. First, we can take responsibility to be the guardian of their wishes and abide by what they desire. Second, do you best to keep the environment quiet. We can reassure them of their peaceful passing, and allow them to communicate what ever might be on their minds. It is www.tampabaywellness.com
not a time for us to debate their thinking or their requests, but a time to assure them of our presence and acceptance of them as our friend or loved one. We can help them by acknowledging death is coming and that it is ok for them to let go. We can also keep chaos and emotional outbursts to a minimum, which allows them to feel at ease and at peace, we may need to help others understand the need for peace and quiet. Helping others understand may enable others to contain those emotions or find another place to express their grief. If the dying person is of faith, reading from their Bible or other spiritual reference can be of great support and comfort. Saying favorite prayers and “laying on of hands” can be soothing and a comfort as well. If the dying person is in a comma, you can continue to talk softly to them, say prayers for them and assure them you are there. Even after the person’s body has stopped functioning and death is present, the soul or spirit is still able to “hear” your soothing words. Saying prayers or sending love in the days past their transition are also of comfort to the ‘soul’. In the event you cannot be present physically for a friend or relative during or after their time of transition or illness, you can take comfort knowing the thoughts and prayers you send them from afar will be of benefit. Offering your prayers and words of comfort, sending your love and thoughts of peace are very important. CONCLUSION Tibetans are very clear: “death comes without warning” – it is a universal truth. So why not begin now to plan and prepare for death, making the transition for ourselves and our loved ones perhaps a bit easier. We know we “can’t take our money, our possessions, or our loved ones with us” but what we will take with us is our “condition” of mind. Begin now to design how you will experience death, by how you prepare your mind and live your life now. Best rule of thumb: Live in the moment, learn to truly relax, don’t take life too seriously, and always have a sense of humor – if well prepared, you can relax in death as in life, and not take death too seriously either. If you have questions or would like support across these difficult situations, please do not hesitate to contact me. --NOVEMBER 2017

MIND - Gratitude By Arielle Giordano
Gratitude Never Asks For More
ave you ever had an eye opening insight into seeing a deeper meaning of an experience? I knew the exact moment when a meeting on a profound level with another person opened. An awakening of consciousness was realizing the two of us becoming one. A new seeing into the real meaning of gratitude exists in the ability to be with another. Gratitude is a quality of being. Being truly grateful means knowing in every moment, goodness is moving regardless of the form it takes. Life brings us what we need to learn through pain or joy. The realization that with every thought, fear, reaction, response or feeling triggered, you can remain open and soft in your heart. This was an appreciation that gave me a taste of knowing the true meaning of gratitude. You can be grateful for being alive, and, know the insightful truth of gratitude. When you move in a space of gratitude, you give thanks to what is present. Life brings pleasant events and sometimes life situations are not so pleasant. You can be grateful and enjoy each experience without judgment,
despite your beliefs, interpretations, opinions, perceptions and assumptions about it. Gratitude exists without personal clutter. Clutter can take the form of “baggage” and “stories “as contribution and input. The truth is to be in your heart, set yourself free and be okay with everything as is. In letting it be, you get to be free to be in it. Being in your heart, you know what is true. In that knowing, you see and grow. The truth is in the knowing that there is goodness in everything. Life challenges us and at times it is painful and hard to see the goodness and receive gratitude. Know that even though you do not see something, does not mean that it does not exist. You may not be able to see the truth in a situation until you open and ready to receive it. Being open and soft in your heart regardless of whether a circumstance is easy, difficult, or full of joy. Goodness brings a gift, an opportunity for growth and evolution. Whatever life brings, you have the ability to open your heart, be grateful and appreciate it. You can enjoy gratitude, living in the freedom of being grateful for every moment. NOVEMBER 2017

Dealing with Hormonal Changes
How to Heal Your Genetic Predispositions
l ar b a C irre T
ll of us come into this world with a set of genes that are predisposed to express themselves in a certain way. However, studies have shown that our thoughts can impact how our DNA is expressed. Internationally renowned consciousness researcher Ilona Selke, author of “Dream Big: The Universe Is Listening,” offers tips for how to create the physical expression of life that you most wish to experience: Stop – This step is about stopping the whirlwind and data overload from news media, social media, digital devices and more. Make time and space to focus on what really matters to you and to discover your personal truth and heart’s desires. How do you want your physical experience to look and feel? Look – Look within to see (if you’re a more visual learner) or feel (if you’re a more kinesthetic learner) what your life will be like when you achieve your goals. Allow yourself to step outside of 3-D reality and into a higher dimension of experience to become conscious of being consciousness itself. Commit to this practice every day until you achieve what you’re aiming for. Choose – You have the power to choose a different life. All you need is a goal, a powerful vision and/or a sensation of what it would be like to achieve that goal and the discipline to put yourself in that mental/emotional state for a minimum of 3 – 5 minutes each day. “Any moment of life, you can step out of the film that you are currently living in and become aware that you are the director,” says Ilona. “You can refocus on what you really want. You sit in the director’s chair of your life. Increased bliss and happiness will be your rewards.” For more information, visit Ilona Selke’s online press kit at www. IlonaSelke.OnlinePressKit247.com or her public websites: www. IlonaSelke.com and www.LivingFromVision.com.
