ENERGY Cooling Your House Without Breaking The Bank
Your home’s air conditioning system can account for more than half of your monthly energy bill. Keeping your home cool this summer doesn’t have to come with an outrageous energy bill. Here are three ways to cut costs without sacrificing comfort: – Landscape strategically. Low-lying shrubs that keep the ground cool and strategically planted trees that shade your home can reduce energy use by 25%. – Buy a programmable thermostat. This will allow you to program your AC to automatically adjust the temperature when no one is home and cool it down before someone returns. – Upgrade your windows. Energy-efficient dual-pane windows keep cool air in and hot air out, making less work for your AC.
FITNESS Squeeze In Fitness At Home
Even the most committed fitness enthusiast can have trouble getting to class at times. Working out from home is a great alternative. The excuses you make for not working out are some of the biggest obstacles you’ll face in your fitness journey. A common refrain: I don’t have time for the gym or a fitness class. Don’t skip your workout. Work out from home instead: – Stream a workout. Fitness subscriptions like Beachbody, YoFi, and Daily Burn bring a trainer into your living room. – Take a brisk 30-minute walk to get your heart rate up and work your muscles. It’s one of the easiest ways to stay fit. – Use fitness apps like MapMyRun for community support or Jefit for tracking your progress. – Ed Buckley, III, Ph.D., Peerfit
THE ARTS 100 Artists Who Shaped St. Pete
EVENTS Run Fest Route Circles Downtown St. Pete
The picturesque route, variety of distances and good weather are expected to draw many participants to the St. Pete Run Fest. Hundreds of runners will take to downtown St. Petersburg’s streets Nov. 18-19 for the inaugural St. Pete Run Fest. The half marathon course begins near The Dali Museum and takes runners along Central Avenue, past Tropicana Field and through the Grand Central, Edge and Warehouse Arts districts. If you’re not ready for a half marathon, register for the youth run or 5K, or do the half relay, splitting the 13.1-mile run with a partner. It’s more than a run. Organizers are donating $1 per mile to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic’s food bank for every 5K participant.
Photographer Ric Savid’s “Boy with Lollipop 1998” is featured in “100 Years/100 Artists.” (Image courtesy of Morean Arts Center) The Morean Arts Center has connected people with art for a century, with roots dating back to 1917 when it was known as the Art Club of St. Petersburg. “100 Years/100 Artists” celebrates the Morean’s rich history as a place for art lovers to gather, exhibit, create and learn about contemporary art. The exhibit chronicles the last century through the works of 100 artists who helped shape the center into what it is today. Artists range from glass artist Duncan McClellan to architect/painter Mark Dixon Dodd to artist/illustrator Charlotte Mullendore. See the exhibit now through June 25.
