The picturesque route, variety of distances and good weather are expected to draw many participants to the St. Pete Run Fest. Hundreds of runners will take to downtown St. Petersburg’s streets Nov. 18-19 for the inaugural St. Pete Run Fest. The half marathon course begins near The Dali Museum and takes runners along Central Avenue, past Tropicana Field and through the Grand Central, Edge and Warehouse Arts districts. If you’re not ready for a half marathon, register for the youth run or 5K, or do the half relay, splitting the 13.1-mile run with a partner. It’s more than a run. Organizers are donating $1 per mile to the St. Petersburg Free Clinic’s food bank for every 5K participant.

Our Society’s Distorted Perception: Normal Physical Function

hat is normal physical function? Well, it is debatable. In a previous article, I spoke of our society’s distorted perception of women’s health issues and discussed natural hormone balancing. The goal of hormone balancing is to achieve optimal function of the physical processes known as hormonal responses. Yet our society as a whole is unfamiliar with how these processes work, and more familiar with the physical malfunctions that are really manifestations of hormonal imbalances. Such manifestations include pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS), hot flashes, night sweats, cramping, acne, bloating, ovarian cysts, poly-cystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), uterine fibroids, endometriosis, infertility, miscarriage, and many others. Similarly, perceptions are distorted about other areas of physical health by the conventional views of “normal” aging. Here we picture elderly folks with arthritis, dementia, weak muscles, cardiovascular issues, prevalent wrinkling, dry, and thin skin, poor vision, and more. These are considered “normal” issues seen in aging adults, yet none of these issues exist in every individual of the same age. In fact, in many or even most cases, these disorders may be addressed with targeted natural treatments and improvements in diet and nutrition. Such issues are often the result of the accumulative effect of unaddressed nutritional deficiencies over time. Additionally, atrophy may develop over time as a result of a lack of physical exercise, both cardiovascular and resistance (weightbearing), as well as stretching. Even issues that may not appear to be physical, quite likely are at least rooted in physical processes. For example, psychological and behavioral disorders may be ameliorated by targeting biochemical processes using 8 JUNE 2017 • Tampa Bay Wellness

So, let’s break it down even further. This word physical is kind of a given, right? Well, not so fast.

Precursors are often involved that allow the body to create the needed biochemicals, such as serotonin, dopamine, gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), and acetylcholine. Thus, normal physical function may lead to normal or improved psychological function. Our so-called physical reality is actually a convergence of electromagnetic energy and each molecule has an electromagnetic signature. What we call “solid” is really a reference to something very relative. We can look at solid as simply a more dense energy than semisolid or liquid. More on that some day. For now, let’s try to target truly normal (optimal) physical function rather than what is conventionally and apathetically accepted as normal. Cheers!

have been working with crystals for many years – I have always loved stones because it was clear to me that they all not only looked different, but they felt different. Some had a fast “buzzing” feeling and some were slow and deep. Some made me feel excited when I held them and others were calming. I thought everyone felt these energies but have come to understand much much later in life that this is not the case. itness in this country has always connoted the exertion of muscular energy, often with sweat and bursts of energy to achieve a level of physical endurance and health. Many of our western sports emphasize strength, toughness and extreme effort in accomplishing fitness and in competition. Sweat and hard physical exertion, though draining, in the name of health and fitness have been the vogue in training and competition. On the other hand and little known until recently to exercise physiologists in the west, the eastern philosophy of health and well-being centers around a different kind of energetic development. The “theory” of energy (known as qi, chi, ki, prana) while similar to western energy, pervades the eastern approach to living and exercising with its belief in an energetic system in the body (meridians or channels) which covers and interpenetrates both the internal organs and surface of the body. The meridians are similar to the western concept of blood vessels in that they carry the

energy to all parts of the body. While there is not yet a definitive, standard, scientific answer to the question of “what is qi”, qi is often defined by western scientists as some sort of bioelectrical energy that exists in the human body. While the point of this month’s theme is fitness, the tie-in of this article is to point out the potential fitness and outcomes of a person engaging in the energetic aspects of building qi (energy) from qigong/chikung, tai chi and the other “internal arts”. External martial arts focus a lot on external physical power, such as strength of muscles and bones. Their goals are to make the body to go faster, be stronger, and maintain the pace longer. There are more external martial arts than internal martial arts. Examples of Chinese external martial arts include Praying Mantis, Hung Gar, Monkey, Tiger, and Wing Chun Kung Fu as is the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do. One Chinese internal martial art is Taijiquan/ tai chi. Besides Taijiquan, there are

only two other Chinese internal martial arts: Baquaquan and Xingyiquan. The Japanese art of Aikido is considered an internal art. Internal martial arts focus on the generation and controlled circulation of Qi. They focus on the internal bodily functions (such as the internal organs) and energetic interpenetration of the body as an integrated whole. Internal martial arts are closely related to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and acupuncture. In internal martial arts, it is critical and there is an emphasis to relax both body and mind. The mind is intensely involved in all aspects including meditation. The objective of internal martial arts is to strengthen the whole body from within, bestowing better health and more effective martial arts techniques. This means better martial techniques such as more powerful strikes, more capacity to withstand strikes, and more rapid reflexes and movements. Better health means a better ability to maintain the skills and the execution of same even at “senior” ages, such as the 70s, 80s and beyond. There are many benefits of qigong for fitness and health such as the following: loosening of muscles, organ strengthening, heart and cardio-vascular functioning, nervous system strengthening, and it can be done by then seriously ill or handicapped. It also helps prevent soft tissue damage and strengthens

joints, ligaments and tendons, stabilizes and helps emotional health, builds athletic prowess, eases stress, and benefits the sedentary worker. Energetic work through qigong and internal arts can also expand spiritual awareness and self- mastery. While most qigong and internal arts exercises have been presented as active, there are standing practices which are also highly effective, such as the horse stance or standing exercise like holding the ball of energy for extended periods. Many qi Masters are long-lived, extremely psychic and highly spiritual. Breathing exercises are also very important in calming the mind and helping reach a calm spiritual state of mind. This reduces stress and is cumulative. The more often it is done, the more beneficial it is. Less stress can not only improve the emotional state of the internal arts practitioner but strengthens and permanently uplifts the individual. How does this all affect “fitness”? Fitness can be described as existing on more than one level – it is physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. The above illustrates the effectiveness of these internal energetic modalities on all levels. Thus it can be seen, that energy disciplines can in effect “fill” one with energy and contribute to a more complete and healthy, less stressed and spiritual life for those who indulge in those practices.

he terms ‘vegan’ and ‘vegetarian’ are becoming more than just trendy buzzwords – the popular diets are now being scientifically studied to understand exactly how they effect the body. Not only are popular myths about malnutrition being proven as invalid, but plant-based diets are providing impressive results in reversing a multitude of conditions including obesity, heart disease, diabetes, while simultaneously preventing many other diseases such as osteoporosis and cancer. The general populace is becoming more accepting and well educated about plant-based diets, and a deeper look into scientific evidence is creating confidence for those who are considering to make the shift. An honest observation of the general populace will offer this confirmation – the everyday human is becoming larger. Today obesity is seen in a variety of demographics, both in adults and children. Lining the streets are renovated fast food buildings and advertisements for the newest designer indulgences. Walking along the sidewalk, children can be seen carrying disposable cups filled with liquid sugar and chemical flavoring. These scenarios are easy to imagine because they are a reality in popular American culture. It is

projected that anyone who follows the modern American lifestyle will eventually become overweight, and according to a recent study, nearly 40% of Americans are considered obese. This is a staggering statistic that expresses the need for a solution: the adoption of a healthy lifestyle. Doing so can prevent and heal many diseases of the body, while simultaneously offering a better quality of life. In particular, plant-based diets are being discovered to offer a myriad of benefits. Defined, a plant-based and whole foods diet is when a human consumes little or no animal products and either limits or completely avoids processed food. There are multiple reasons to adopt this type of diet, both health and ethical, and people with extremely poor health are often recommended to only consume whole foods to allow the body to cleanse and regenerate. Plant-based diets are also valuable in a preventative lifestyle, where changes are made in order to avoid the development of serious health conditions. Studies are stressing the need for physicians to recommend a plant based diet to all patients, and scientific communities are also bringing awareness to the detrimental effects of massproduced animal products on the planet’s ecology.

Surrounded by a culture of consumption, it can be intimidating to form a lifestyle that requires open-mindedness, discipline, and a willingness to learn. For individuals suffering from brain damage, such as a stroke or other brain related disfunction, we can begin to redirect or rewire pathways to reactivate brain functions. One way to advance your ability to manage your thinking and create new neuropathways is to understand how your brain works. Just like building muscles with strength training, you can train your brain. Dr. Evian Gordon, offers a simple model of how the brain operates in his Brain 1-2-4 Model , He explains that the brains organizing principle is to minimize danger and maximize reward. Becoming aware of the fact that the brain looks for threat first will inform you of how we tend to have more negative thoughts than positive. The brains two modes of thinking are conscious and non-conscious. Four key processes of the brain include; thinking, emotions, feeling, and self-regulation. Thinking, feeling and self-regulation are conscious and emotions are non-conscious. Emotions serve as cues or signals about our environment. Often, those nonconscious cues are felt in our body, such as in the gut or with a faster heartbeat. “Follow your heart” has proven to be great advise. In 1990’s Dr. Andrew Amour discovered that the heart has its own complex nervous system allowing it to act independently of the cranial brain. It has the capacity to learn, remember and even feel and sense. The fact that the heart has its own intrinsic nervous system is what allows a heart transplant to work. Research at The HeartMath Institute identified that the heart communicates to the brain in four ways; Neurologically through the transmission of nerve impulses, biochemically via hormones and neurotransmitters, biophysically via pressure waves and energetically through electromagnetic field interactions. Emotions influence the activity of our heart and cognitive brain. Renewing emotions such as love, appreciation, and gratitude produce a coherent heart rate variability, or HRV. HRV is a relatively new method for assessing heart health and the effects of stress on your body. It is measured as the time gap between your heart beats. Research links a coherent pattern of HRV to good health and a high level of fitness. An incoherent pattern of HRV is linked to stress and fatigue. Depleting emotions such as anger, frustration or fear send our HRV into a incoherent pattern. Evidence based research has demonstrated when our HRV is in an incoherent pattern the hearts communication to the brain compromises our “executive brain” or prefrontal cortex and we become reactive rather than responsive. Trust your gut? In 1996, Dr. Michael Gershon coined the gut our “second brain”. The guts 100 million neurons influence our mood, weight, hormones and even genetic expression. Microbes in our intestines help to produce neurotransmitters that are needed for proper brain function. Neurotransmitters are how our cells communicate and they play a major role in cognitive development, psychological health, sleep patterns and stress response. The gut communicates with our cognitive brain via the vagus nerve. Is your stomach “upset”, or is there tension in your belly? Using our “second brain” to become aware of non-conscious emotions can help to identify thoughts that may be contributing to discomfort or dis-ease. Having an awareness and understanding of how these 3 “brains” function and interact can be life changing. Rather than reacting you can learn to respond. Learning about how your brain works, how your heart communicates and how your “gut” intuition guides you can literally influence all aspects and roles you hold in your life. While in this state, the sense of unconditional love that you have for humanity virtually begs you to help those who are not yet equipped to do this for themselves. When you give that state, that energy, that feeling of inspiration away and send it into the group consciousness of humanity, you have opened up yourself to become a receiver. By the law of “what goes around must come around” means what you give out to others comes back to you many times over. An act of self-sacrifice in service to others has a side-effect: It raises the frequency of your consciousness higher than it was before. So, when you become filled with inspiration and upliftment from the universe, it is filled with an even higher frequency of consciousness than before. Because of that, you will have become more inspired and more uplifted than ever before. By the act of sacrificing that which you had, you will actually gain more than you had before. Such is the paradox of love in action. By giving spiritual energy to humankind, you tread a pathway of spiritual fitness. ow do we get the dense, lower vibrations to move to higher feelings? We take unwanted emotions too seriously. It doesn’t have to be heavy unless you resist. Value and accept all feelings and your awakening can be smooth. There is no value in suffering, let go of that belief. Declare ease and grace. Stop continuing to struggle and resist the lower feelings. Any emotion, fully experienced moves up into a higher vibration. Humans call emotions negative or positive, but it’s all valuable information. Now don’t go looking for negativity. We create negativity by looking for it. That delays your enlightenment. Live life fully and realize all is occurring in perfect timing. Let uncomfortable feelings move quickly by experiencing them. Allow emotions to bubble to the surface and out of your energy field. Don’t try to fix it or make it go away. Value all emotions in their perfect pure state. Emotions and outer changes are signs things are moving. Anytime something happens that isn’t what you want, or you feel something you don’t like, it is life telling you are out of vibrational alignment with your higher self, so it hurts. Here’s a place where you’re not being your true self and it’s painful. Don’t analyze it, feel it. Don’t resist, let it pass through you quickly. Experience the feeling fully and dive in to it. Then move it up. See all emotions as a gauge not negative or positive. Then decide how high you want to fly. It takes time for the higher navigation to stick but don’t give up. If you feel bad, you can choose to lift your altitude. Emotions are valuable information that tell you where you’re pointed. Experience it internally. Don’t think about it too much, analyze it or talk too much about it with others. You’ll just keep recreating and get stuck in the drama. Ignore your disempowering stories. Once you experience your emotions internally instead of playing them out externally, your life becomes drama-free. Your greatest power is in cleaning up your own emotions before speaking to

someone or acting on it. Your emotions are for you alone. Experience the emotions then have a brighter view of the situation. Name the lower emotion you are feeling (fear, sadness, grief, anger) and think of a replacement emotion (joy, happiness, love, peace, strength). Sitting or hiking in nature, will help you to connect to your emotions and bring in higher vibrations. Now you have an opportunity to let go, and let bliss in. When we don’t feel the bliss, ask the Divine to assist in bringing it in. Invite it! Call on the bliss to enter your being. Here are some guidelines to riding those emotions. ~ The best way to get rid of the pain is to feel the pain and when you feel the pain and go beyond it, you’ll see there’s a very intense love waiting. ~ You can predict how long it will be until something you want arrives by how you feel about it, and which way you’re pointed. If you feel ecstatic about it, you know you’ll be there soon. If you feel doubtful about it, you’re not pointed at it. If you’re depressed about it, you’re heading away from it. ~ As things come up, assist them in releasing by taking Epsom salt baths, journaling, dancing, crying, whatever feels good to you. Don’t judge or over evaluate what

comes up. Feel the emotion and let it go. ~ Drop the story. Feel the feeling. Keep your emotions for yourself. Don’t blame others for how you feel. Stay in your power. ~ Any feeling un-resisted moves, rises and frees you. When you fear no emotion, you are free. Life isn’t a school. We don’t have to pass or fail. When we know who we are, we are one with the Divine. When we are awake, our bodies have a fully flowered heart, and we don’t wish to leave this life. Feel grateful for this life. When you live in love you won’t worry about fixing anything, you won’t push away or cling. You just accept. Life is always in a stream of creation. Relax and enjoy the ride. I love you; we are one! June, the Number 6 and Spiritual Upliftment


une is the sixth month in a twelve month cycle, thus representing the mid-point of the year and also containing the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year. Much like a see-saw, it (6) is in the middle of not only the year, but also in numerology, in which the numbers 1-9 are most commonly used. In the Tarot, six is seen as representing balance, harmony and love. The meaning of the number Six is denoted as being a feminine, subjective, formative, creative and Venusian (meaning it is associated with Venus, thus beauty and love). Six is twice 3. 3 is seen as activity on the lower planes of consciousness while on the higher it is denotes as transmutation and higher spiritual values and action. With 6 being twice three, there is the interrelationship of the human ego being uplifted through transformation and purification to the higher Divine spiritual principles. The perfect illustration of this are the two triangles contained in the six-sided Solomon’s Seal in which one triangle points up and the other down. The downward pointing triangle represents the lower human aspects with the upper pointed one denoting Spirit. The blending, purification of the lower aspect, and the ultimate enlightenment and illumination is shown by the upward pointing one. The Seal of Solomon is a symbol of unification and transformation of these aspects. The six, according to the Pythagoreans, is a feminine number dedicated to Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. In the Tarot’s Major Arcana, the number six is known as the Lover’s card. There is a triangle between the masculine, feminine, and spiritual aspects on the card, a balance, or harmony with the three-sided triangle as one looks upward to higher spiritual consciousness. Thus it can be seen that June, the sixth month, is comprised of power and creativity and in the Northern hemisphere, it is a time of growth, beauty and intense energy. The biblical Creation story states the all was completed in six days. The seventh day was a day of rest, thus indicating that a six person will often initially purify, and then complete their spiritual evolution, not in the objective day –to-day mundane world, but rather during the period of rest and within the inner self, and in a time of quiet seclusion. Is it just a historical coincidence or is it, rather, an illustration of the energies of six, that 6 June 1944 was D-day? It was on that 6 day that the creation of a new order, free from the ravages of WWII began. There was a tremendous purification of the old, destructive energies as formulated by the dark, repressive and lethal energies of the Third (3) Reich. In fact, the overall energies of that day were 6+6+9 (1+9+4+4 = 18 = 9) = 21 = 2+1 = 3. Multiple 6’s embodied in that date indicate tremendous energies as a double number usually causes disruption. These energies, subjectively, were directed in this case to the attainment of the new and higher purpose. It is the body moving as art! This devotion of dance has transformational powers of transcendence to inspire and awaken the soul and the deeper essence of your being. Dance invites you as awareness to move in time and space and enjoy being in physical form. From here you can explore levels within, such as the expression in moving a particular body part, thoughts, feelings, release stress, and experience the “El duende a heightened state of emotion, expression and authenticity” and “aha” moments. Dance as a personal expression for me, has opened new creative expressions, perceptions, poetry, released painful thoughts and feelings, and created a well-being of body, mind and spirit. The five ways Dance can heal, express, create, and help you to look and feel better:

Posture is very important in dance. If you watch the television show “Dancing with the Stars,” notice how often you hear the word posture. Here are some tips for improving your stance: stand tall with tummy tucked in and under. If you look at yourself in the mirror you will be straight and your shoulders, hips, and ankles will be in alignment. Shoulders are down and slightly pressed back. Tuck your bottom underneath your spine.

Dance invites you to be in your body and to become more aware of being in your body. Be conscious that each movement has within it the potential to release hidden thoughts, feelings, insights, and awareness. Old crusty patterns can replay every day, and those patterns can be moved into conscious awareness and transmuted through dance. You have the ability to become that movement, in the physical expression of your body. You can use it to discover who you are as a being and uncover your uniqueness through artistry and creative expression. Just take a moment to look around in nature. We live in a moving universe. Everything is in constant motion. From the minute you are born to the moment you die, your cells are moving and dancing within you.
