Data breach reported at Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen
Any Customer who has visited Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen restaurants may want to double check their bank accounts. The Orlando-based restaurant said there was a data breach that could have exposed the credit card, and other payment information, of more than 560,000 customers across 23 states, reports the Orlando Sentinel. It would impact people that visited the restaurants between November 2, 2017 to January 2, 2018. Darden Restaurants Inc., the parent company for Cheddar’s, said it learned of the breach on August 16. “The trust our guests place in us is something we take very seriously, and we regret that this incident occurred,” Darden Restaurants said in a statement to the Sentinel. “We deeply value our relationships with our guests, and our priority is to assist those who may have been impacted by this incident.” The company said it will offer free identity protection services to the impacted customers. The Sentinel reports the breach involved the point-of-sale machines that were part of Cheddar’s before they purchased the chain.

By Chalise Bourque Before I was a freelance author, editor and novelist, I was a rambunctious little redhead who (says Mom) “ran” by 9 months – but also constantly fell down! Three years and three orthopedic diagnoses later, my poor mother had variously been told I was “definitely right dominant,” “flat footed!” and, worst of all, that I’d contracted polio as a baby and you missed it!” Wrong. Wrong. And wrong. What Mom and the doctors missed 72 years ago is that I started life with only one hip socket. Babies born with this condition today receive early treatment and go on to develop perfect hips on which to walk through life. Not so babies born in 1945. Today, I am the recipient of too many hip surgeries to count, doing life on a cane. But I am also traveling, biking, swimming and tossing that cane in the corner to go dancing. How is that possible? Most people pay very little attention to the details of their insurance. When you're buying a new house,
the cheapest policy sometimes fits the budget the best. Starting your new business and you get the quickest general liability policy that can get you the certificate of insurance. Going online to a web site that promises 15-Minutes will save you $500 may only get what you pay for. Your financial risk is worth more than 15 minutes. No one cares about insurance until they need it. Once the house has a fire or the car is in a wreck, is not the time you pay attention to the details. Many people think they have “Full-Coverage” when they are asked about their insurance. This is a dangerous term as there is really no such term in the insurance world as Full Coverage. Coverage is NOT standard to all policies and each policy has its own exclusions, options and endorsements you can add or drop. Knowing that you do not have a specific coverage or reduced limits is one thing. But expecting to have coverage and not having can have devastating financial results to you and your family. A Florida home owners policy has many statutory definitions and coverage options not found in other states. Water coverage for pipes bursting inside the house or water overflowing represents 60%
of all homeowner’s insurance claims in Florida. Depending on the age of the house and insurance company availability, many policies only include $10,000 for this coverage and if you have a $2500 deductible, you have very limited coverage. A toilet water supply line failure on the 2nd floor of your home can not only wipe out the floors and walls in that bathroom but the ceiling, walls and flooring on the 1st floor. The home may be uninhabitable for months with water extraction and repairs taking place. Some companies have been known to reduce or exclude water coverage on renewal disclosing the changes in the policy renewal. The general rule of thumb with auto insurance is to get as much as you can afford. Now, what you can afford now versus 5 years ago is probably different. If you are involved in an auto accident and you are at-fault you could be personally liable for the short falls of your policy limits. If you only have $50,000 in bodily injury coverages and you put three people in the hospital with injuries, you may be legally responsible to pay out of pocket for years. The cost to increase that coverage from $50,000 to $250,000 may only be a moderate increase in your premium. That extra coverage on your policy will make you sleep better at night if you or your family are ever in an accident. If you are a business owner, you have insurance. As your business grows so does the businesses valuation. You need the right policies and coverages to protect your business and what you have worked for. A painting company that also does wood framing and drywalling must have those “class codes” listed on their policy to have coverage. Workers compensation, excess umbrella, directors and officer’s coverage and E&O coverages must be reviewed frequently to ensure no-coverage-gaps as the business changes and grows. Lawsuits that have been catching businesses off guard have recently been related to wrongful employee discharge and cyber-theft of client personal records. The purpose of this article is not to confuse you about your insurance policy but to make you aware that your current policy may or may not be set up to cover you properly. You are unique, and your life and family are different from what it was years ago. If you have not spent time and had your coverages reviewed by an insurance professional, you need to take the time and get this done. This must be done in language that you understand, so you can grasp the details of the policies premiums you are paying for. Real Estate Agents who represent buyers have an obligation to their peers in the industry. It may not be a ‘written rule’ – but a Listing Agent, who is selling a home, has a right to assume that the Buyer Agent, who is bringing the buyer, has assured the buyer can actually buy the home. In other words, if I am the Listing Agent, I expect the Buyer Agent has made certain the Buyer has a recent preapproval letter from a Lender. What to Do
Lawn problems: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month. Perennials and bulbs: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to new planting areas and monitor water needs during establishment. Irrigation: Check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly before summer rains taper off. Citrus: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. If the weather has been rainy, do not use soluble nitrogen as rains will leach it from the soil too quickly. Fertilizer Bans: Some municipalities in central Florida prohibit the application of fertilizer to lawns and/or landscape plants during the summer rainy season (June–September). Vegetable gardens: Prepare the fall vegetable garden if not done in August. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start, but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose.

In her poem “Hope” is the Thing with Feathers, Emily Dickinson’s creates a metaphor of hope through a little bird “that perches in the soul” and “never stops—at all.” It’s always there inside. It never asks for anything and it never takes flight. It never reacts or participates. That’s the thing about hope. It just hangs out with us, especially during dark nights. Although hope offers encouragement, it rarely mobilizes our energy or our actions. As a young girl growing up in the heart of the Bible belt, hope was affiliated with the concept of victim. “I hope that God will hear me.” It actually lowered expectations and consciousness because hope became something that was always delayed or put on the shelf. It was about waiting for the knight in shining armor or some magical evangelical leader to be the change. In my early life experience, it taught me to give my power away. It put the responsibility on someone else—to live a life in the fading light of day.

President Obama took hope toward the other end of that spectrum when he wrote about the audacity of hope to move us forward as a nation as citizens of the world. But if we are truly willing to take big risks—to be daring, fearless brave and courageous, we must act and act consistently. One way is to live daily what you say hourly—to really model all the things that are significantly important to you. Instead of hoping one day the animals’ lives won’t be taken needlessly, live in the world of being a vegetarian. When you demonstrate your path, others may choose to join you. This is how change happens. But positive change only works if you stay in alignment with who you are. In other words, are you the same person at work that you are in your morning meditation or Wednesday evening yoga class or Sunday morning church service?
