Are you brushing your teeth the right way?

he task of tooth brushing may seem as simple as breathing and frequently we complete the task without any thought as to what we are really doing. It seems basic and routine. Many of you have heard and comply

toothbrush, however, a soft, round-ended bristle brush is the better choice for adults as well as children. Brushing with a hard bristled brush with excess force actually will damage delicate gum tissue. We are not trying to scrub a

with brushing twice a day and flossing once. Surprisingly, health experts are finding that improper brushing technique is more common than people realize, leaving many mouths not as healthy as they could be. Start the tooth brushing process by selecting the right brush. While adults may be selecting a medium or hard

stain rather brushing is just removing the soft plaque that builds up during the day. Once plaque hardens to tartar or calculus, it can no longer be removed by brushing alone so extra hard brushing will not help. Of course, replace that toothbrush every 3-4 months since once the bristles become splayed out, they are

less effective in cleaning the tooth surfaces and the rough edges can harm the gums. Remember, the electric brush heads need to be replaced every 3-4 months too. Another surprise is that tooth brushing technique does matter. Brush in a circular motion with the bristles of the brush at a 45 degree angle to the gum line. It is helpful to follow a pattern while brushing so that all tooth surfaces are cleaned. Develop your own systematic approach. Divide your mouth into 4 areas and plan to brush all surfaces of the teeth in one area of your mouth at a time before moving to the next area. It should take about 2 minutes to properly clean all tooth surfaces. An electric toothbrush really makes this easy; all you have to do is hold the brush in the proper position and the brush does the rest of the work. Brushing is especially important for children since tooth decay occurs faster in children than adults. Parents should brush their child’s teeth as soon as the first tooth appears. Pick a soft bristle tooth brush with a small head and brush using a rice size amount of infant toothpaste (without fluoride). When all 20 baby teeth are present, around age 2 years old, you can switch to a fluoride toothpaste. Parents need to actively

participate in brushing and /or follow up brushing their child’s teeth until 8-10 yrs old; that is when children have developed the hand coordination required to properly brush their own teeth. Continue to supervise brushing until age 11. While brushing removes debris and bacteria from the tooth surface, flossing removes plaque and food particles from between teeth where a toothbrush cannot reach. Start flossing your child’s teeth everyday as soon as teeth begin to touch each other. Good dental health is a partnership between the children, parents, the pediatric dentist, pediatrician and other dental specialists. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend the first dental visit at one year of age to establish a dental home and for continued regular dental care. You teeth are meant to last a lifetime and with continual care they can. Parents are always welcome to be with their children during their dental visits at our office. Call 813-631-1100 or visit our website www. for more information. Please feel free to call our office. We are happy to answer you dental questions.• Live Oak Preserve / MARCH 2016

Join Cat Crusaders

Where Volunteers Save Lives! In 2015, Cat Crusaders rescued, cared for and adopted 659 cats and kittens. That’s an impressive number to build to

in four short years, considering that in 2011, that number was 452. Cat Crusaders’ work in saving cat lives is only possible through the gift of time and resources. The organization would like to do more in 2016 and has the following volunteer opportunities available: · PetSmart Event Coordinator – Increase our adoptions through the coordination of four (May, September, November) instore PetSmart events. Prepare PetSmart grant to cover costs associated with the event,

coordinate dog rescue group attendance and work with the communications team, making sure they prepare and submit

press releases to the local media. · Event and Foster Photographers – Make Cat Crusaders’ adoptables more adoptable and document events. Use your creative talents to take pictures of foster cats for posting on the Cat Crusaders website. Visually document events for use in the Cat Crusaders’ newsletter and website. · Fosters – Save more cat lives by becoming a cat foster. We’re expecting more kittens than ever this year due to the overall warm winter. The more

cat fosters homes available, the more cats that can save. See the Cat Crusaders website for details on what it’s like to be a cat foster. · Adoption Center Counselors – Give a few hours a month and make a difference in cat lives and bring meaning to your life. Become a Cat Crusaders adoption center counselor. A four-hour commitment is all it takes. If you’re serious about becoming a Cat Crusaders volunteer, visit their website, www.tampacatcrusaders. org, and complete an online application.

What to Plant

Annuals: Replace declining winter annuals with varieties such as angelonia, gazania, and salvia that will provide color now and into the summer months. Bulbs: Plant caladium for a showy tropical display all summer. Herbs: In addition to their culinary value, many herbs are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden. Vegetables: Warm season crops such as cucumber, eggplant, and summer squash should be planted now for late spring harvest.

Make the Most of Your

What to Do?

Azaleas: If azaleas need pruning to shape or produce a fuller plant, do it just after plants finish blooming. Prune spring flowering trees and shrubs after blooming: Prune after the last flowers fade but before new buds set in mid to late summer. Prune shrubs and trees when new growth begins: The end of the dormant season is a good time to prune many trees and shrubs. Cold damaged shrubs can be pruned back to where new growth appears. Fertilize: palms and any other ornamentals not fertilized last month. Soil Test Information Sheet Fertilization of Field-grown and Landscape Palms in Florida Irrigation: Now that dry weather is here, check sprinkler systems for efficient use of water. Identify and conserve beneficial insects: Some insects should be encouraged in your yard!
