onnoisseurs of beers, the lovers of suds, the admirers of hops, the enumerated with IPAs and those swooning over stouts — they will travel for the great batch of brew. Brew it and they will come. They will search far and wide for the next great craft beer brewery, hoping for a diamond in the rough of great beer and that the ambiance was worth the trip. Luckily, there’s no shortage of craft beer breweries in Florida — there’s nearly 250 of those, ranking it 10th in the US as of 2017. And even more luckily for the local thirsty, there are seven craft beer breweries spread across Pasco County with plans for more to spring up sooner rather than later. “It’s awesome though,” says Brian Hackman, owner and founder of Cotee River Brewing Co. in New Port Richey, “because we feed off each other. We’ll recommend each other to customers so its great for our community and all of Pasco. And, usually, the response is very good.” No longer a niche drink, the popularity of craft beer, and brew pubs and bars that brew and serve their own brand, is growing at a lightning pace. While only a handful of places distribute their beer (i.e. Big Storm), many share with each other to have a guest beer on tap.

“People will travel for a beer or place either they read about or heard about by word of mouth,” says Jim Bishop, owner and founder of Infusion Brewing Co. in New Port Richey. “If we haven’t already, we’re going to create a destination for people to explore and try new beers because a lot of people want something more than your average beer.” “That folks like us and come over to see us with everything that is now available around here speaks volumes of what people are looking for in the area,” adds Joe Traina, one of the owners and founders of In The Loop Brewing in Land O’ Lakes. “Locals have really embraced not only us, but all the other local breweries, and I think that’s because people what to drink a great beer at a great place.” Even if Pasco County is playing a bit of catch up. “I think Pasco has been a little slow to the party,” says Robert Hilferding, owner and founder of Zephyrhills Brewing Co. “There’s no real explanation to it, but word of mouth has helped and so has trying new things — because us real brewers are all about trying new things. So we are beginning to show the people of Pasco what craft beer is all about.”

Cotee River Brewing Co. 5760 Main St New Port Richey, FL Coteeriverbrewing.com

THE POUR The newest of the breweries in Pasco (has been open only four months), Brian Hackman has established the first brewery located in historic downtown New Port Richey, which is seeing a revival with new restaurants and shops. Hackman also proudly boasts that their first beer, Market Fresh Wheat, sold out on the first day.

Brew All this talk about craft beer made us thirsty, so we decided to check out the seven craft beer brewing companies in Pasco County. Here’s a rundown of what’s on tap ...

Escape Brewing Co. 9945 Trinity Blvd Trinity, FL Escapebrewingcompany.com

THE POUR Longtime friends Matt Thompson and John McGregor opened Escape in 2015, but since then have grown exponentially and distribute their beer locally, as well. The brewery became their “escape” from corporate America. Beer mainstays here are the Goofy Footed Wheat Ale and the Other West Coast IPA.

Infusion Brewing Co. 7813 Mitchell Blvd New Port Richey, FL facebook.com/ InfusionBrewingCo

THE POUR The fourth — and definitely not last — of the craft beer breweries on Pasco’s west side, Jim Bishop celebrates his two year anniversary this month. While hosting trivia nights and other fun events, Bishop loves experimenting with new blends, but Skiffy Jippy, a chocolate peanut butter porter, and Pep In Yo’ Step, a jalapeno double IPA, are two tasty beers.

In The Loop Brewing 3338 Land O’ Lakes Blvd Land O’ Lakes, FL Intheloopbrewingcompany.com

THE POUR The only craft beer brewery — for now — on Pasco’s east side, founder Robert Hilferding is enjoying his retirement by brewing new, unique and tasty beers in downtown Zephyrhills. ZBC has become a popular place for trivia, live music and expanding locals palate for craft beer. THE POUR In The Loop, founded by Jim Traina, Mark Pizzurro and Peter Abreut, have carved themselves arguably one of the beer garden outdoor seating in the area, as it has a great view of Lake Padgett. In The Loop is still a small operation, but is growing every day as its taproom, located in an renovated two-story house, keeps expanding, as does the business thanks to word of mouth and popular beer events. Six Pack MOD Pizza

2227 Sun Vista Dr, Lutz Yelp Rating: 4.5 The Cut: MOD boasts artisan-style pizza made fresh and quickly on what they lovingly refer to as an assembly line. This is the first MOD location in the Tampa Bay area, as MOD is the original superfast pizza chain that started in Seattle in 2008. Have To Try This: The Calexico — this pizza features mozzarella, gorgonzola, chicken, jalapenos, hot buffalo sauce on red sauce. Careful. It’s spicy.

Mellow Mushroom

25662 Sierra, C St, Lutz Yelp Rating: 4 The Cut: Mellow Mushroom makes it debut in Pasco County and, as with its other locations, boasts funky, art-filled pizzas, craft beers, calzones and creative stone-baked pizzas. This chain has always taken pride in its psychedelic style and brand. Have To Try This: Kosmic Karma — mellow red sauce base with feta cheese, mozzarella, spinach, sun-dried roasted tomatoes and roma tomatoes. Finished with a pesto swirl. Trippy. For many people, losing weight is at the top of their bucket list. For others, it is the only way to become, and feel healthy again. Many of us have tried yo-yo diets, or buy the expensive celebrity promoted trends, that pop up in social media and TV and radio commercial hype. The failed weight loss remains, and people continue to be discouraged. However, Medical Weight Loss, LLC at (813) 269-SLIM has been proving since 2007, that weight loss, whether 10 pounds or 120 pounds, can be done safely, affordably and successfully! Many different diseases, such as diabetes, autoimmune and thyroid problems and heart disease, are linked to being overweight. We know about these things. Weight loss is not just a matter of looking good, but, is a medical program of improving your health and reducing your risks. Feeling better, is also a great by-product of slimming down. Medical Weight Loss opened in 2007, and is headed by Dr. Gail Jachimek. The main clinic is located at 5111 Ehrlich Road. Their other weight loss clinics are in Wesley Chapel, FL., Lake Geneva, and Waukesha, Wisconsin. Their prices have not increased since they began the medical weight loss practice. Dr. Jachimek and her husband are both Chiropractic physicians, and have those clinics here and in Spring Hill. So, they also treat patients that are in pain from accident injuries, and have every day neck or back pain! Their medical weight loss program combines pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections and pills, and a clinically proven diet with medical doctor and nursing support and counseling to help their patients reach their “target” weight goals. This physician supervised program helps those who have before tried and failed to lose unwanted pounds. Dr. Gail says, “We opened the clinic because I was entering menopause and gaining weight. When I asked my primary physician, as well as my doctor friends, for help, I got extremely rude responses. I was told to “push away from the table”. Dr. Gail does not want her patients to go through the same degrading experience.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT ||

Medical Weightloss At the time, Dr. Gail was living on chicken and salad, and practicing level 3 kickboxing. She says, “I had been thin as a young woman, so I also assumed that anyone over weight deserved to be overweight because they were ‘eating chips in front of the television,’ etc.” When the unexplained weight gain happened to her, she was then convinced that other factors were involved. She wanted an answer. Determined to learn more, Dr. Jachimek joined the ASBP (American Society of Bariatric Physicians) and went to their symposiums for further education and tools. She discovered that there are many contributing factors to weight gain - not just your diet. Some of the major contributing factors included hormonal imbalances, thyroid issues, environmental toxins, autoimmune disease, type 2 diabetes, etc. It was then that she opened the main clinic in Tampa to help people dealing with the same frustrating weight gain frustration she had faced. They have since opened 3 more clinics in Florida and Wisconsin. “At Medical Weight Loss, LLC, we have medical doctors, as well as nurse practitioners, that have been treating our patients successfully for years, so that the root cause of these problems can be addressed. Our registered nurses and supportive staff are there for you to help you every step of the way.” Medical weight loss plans are not new, and many are similar, but those programs usually involve significant upcharges and hidden fees. Dr. Jachimek’s 269-SLIM program is different. Her program is focused on the long-term results, meaning, not only will the process safely take off your weight during the active phase of the program, but also prevent the pounds from returning during the “maintenance phase”...(which is free)! This is no diet trend – This is looking at your medical history, evaluating your EKG, bloodwork and lifestyle. Then, their doctors propose a plan for you, and prescribe appropriate pharmaceutical appetite suppressant medication, fat burning injections, vitamin therapy and fat burning supplements.

24 | LUTZ MAGAZINE | VOLUME II • ISSUE I | TO ADVERTISE CALL 813-501-4894

“The program is simple, inexpensive and easy to follow. We give you a large list of foods to buy/choose from,” says Dr. Jachimek. “The program is easy, because it is food bought in the grocery store, (no special foods to order) just regular meats, fruits and vegetables on our list. This factor also makes it more affordable, because you don’t have to buy special foods, or cook separate dinners if you have a family.” Under the supervision of their medical doctors, patients can drop 20 to 30 pounds in the first month. Dr. Jachimek said that it is common to see 5-10 pounds dropped in the first week. “We have had patients that have lost 17 pounds in their first week, as well as patients that have lost over a hundred pounds on our program”, says Dr. Jachimek. Accountability is also a major part of the program. Keeping the patients safe and on track, their nurses evaluate, and treat patients weekly to provide support and give suggestions on how to reach and maintain their target weight. Dr. Jachimek stresses that there are no price surprises at Medical Weight Loss, 269-SLIM. The initial visit is $195 and weekly visits are just $55. That’s it! This is what you have been waiting for!, an inexpensive, easy and successful way to lose the unwanted pounds that have made you miserable for years. They do caution future patients to be aware of newer weight loss or family clinics that either just dabble in weight loss or do not have the 10+ years of true medical weight loss experience that Medical Weight Loss, LLC does. A word to the wise… As their slogans say, “With 269SLIM (MEDICALWEIGHTLOSSLLC. COM) there are no hidden fees…just pounds gone”…or “Weigh less for WAY less”…or “When you’re done fooling around, call us!”. ___________________________________ Medical Weight Loss LLC is located at 5111 Ehrlich Road, Suite 128 in Tampa, 33624. It’s 2019

and this year I’d like to suggest skipping the New Year’s resolutions. Why make plans to start something and then fall off the wagon within three weeks? I always end up feeling like a loser when my resolutions don’t even last a month. What if we just resolved to stay the way we are and make changes as we go along. Little improvements that will add to our quality of life.

1. Dieting vs. Healthy Eating There are so many good programs that teach healthy eating and portion control. Identify what is in your area and check out several so you can learn as you go, have group support and when there is a weekly weigh in, accountability. Weight Watchers has offered a sensible approach that has lasted through the years. MyFitnessPal.com offers an online program where you can track your food and exercise daily, along with seeing friends check in and lose weight. 2. Jazzercise vs. Gym memberships There is a gym on every corner and cardio/spinning classes offered at a variety of locations. Jazzercise offers multiple classes and a month to month payment plan. Why sign a contract to pay for months when you have lost interest and are on to something else?

Strike-Jabs and kicks to pumping music knock out stress and release your endorphins. Calories don’t stand a chance! Strength-Muscle sculpting class combines weights and resistance training to crate a tight, lean body. 3. Financial Planning vs. Spend it as you go If you are waiting for your check on Friday to pay your bills, chances are you already spend it as you go. Start with baby steps of a savings account and transfer $25 each pay period. It’s probably small enough that you won’t even notice that it’s gone. When you save up a few hundred, visit your bank and see where they can help you make more money. Take the stress our of your new year by starting out with zero pressure to do this or that. Find little things you can do to create change and stay open minded to new ideas that come your way. Give yourself a break when it comes to your shortcomings. Don’t try to create resolutions or goals that are based on other people’s expectations or social norms that we are expected to achieve. Leave your 2018 baggage behind and find fun and things that add to your quality of life. Start Jazzercise for $0 in January, no joining fee and no first month’s class fees. Normal fees start in February 2019 and vary upon location. We have three locations in the Tampa Bay area, Lutz, South Tampa and Westchase. Go to www.jazzercise.com or call 800-348-4748 for class times.

Lawn &

Garden

February, 2019

What to Plant

Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that perform better in the cooler months include petunia, pansy, verbena, dianthus, strawflower, and lobelia. Protect from frosts and freezing temperatures. Bulbs: Many bulbs can be planted now. Provide adequate water for establishment and protect from cold weather with mulch. Some examples include Amazon lily, crinum, and agapanthus. Azaleas: With azaleas in full bloom this month, now is a great time to select varieties to add to the landscape. Vegetables: Numerous warm- and coolseason vegetables can be planted this month. Protect cold-tender veggies if a frost or freeze is predicted.

What to Do

Palms: Give cold-damaged palms proper care to encourage their recovery. Citrus: Check citrus trees for scab disease. Apply a copper fungicide when new leaves appear and again when two-thirds of the flower blossoms have fallen. Roses: Prune roses this month to remove damaged canes and improve the overall form. After pruning, fertilize and apply a fresh layer of mulch. Blooming will begin 8–9 weeks after pruning. Shrubs: Fertilize shrubs by spreading fertilizer evenly over the soil surface and watering it in. Follow with a fresh layer of mulch to conserve moisture and reduce weeds. Lawn: Apply a preemergence weed killer (not a "weed and feed") to lawns this month to prevent germination of warm-season weed seeds. Apply when temperatures rise to 65°F for 4–5 days. Timing is important for good control. Citrus and other fruit trees: Fertilize now if not done in January. Frequency and amount of fertilization depend on the age of the tree. Brad Boger was just too tall. He was teaching his daughter, Kylie, to ride a bike and frustration, for both of them, was setting in. “You have to bend over to reach the seat of the bike, Brad says. “Then you’re running bent over or if you hold them, they lean on you and and they never learn how ride. “Teaching my kids to ride was never a pleasant experience nor was it when I learned to ride a bike. They get scared and quit on you, and my daughter was doing just that and wanted to give up because we were getting pretty frustrated, bloodied and bruised up. Instead of giving up, Brad, a Land O’ Lakes resident, longtime general contractor and owner of Golf Coast Construction in Lutz, decided to find a way to make it easier on both him and his daughter. In a matter of hours, Brad designed and constructed the Bike Tail, a simple device that attaches universally to any bike seat and acts as an extended handle as a way for parents to help guide their child’s path with ease. “After I made this and put it on her bike, Brad adds, “she learned in a day. The Bike Tail can be used with or without training wheels. While training wheels provides a safety net for a child being wobbly, the Bike Tail allows the parent to balance the child’s bike or give a little nudge while jogging behind the bike. It even allows the parent to stop the bike by grabbing the handle. And, similar to training wheels, the Bike Tail provides confidence to the child, as they know there is still a safety net. Now, Brad has been marketing and selling the Bike Tail locally, however, the goal is to change the way children learn to ride bikes. “It used to be about setting the kids loose, then they’re going crash, Brad adds, “and they’re going to get discouraged, put the bike in the garage and don’t want to do it anymore. This will give them the confidence to keep trying until they get it. The Bike Tail sells for $29 and is available for purchase at biketail.com or call 1-833-Bik-Tail.
