With a park at our heart and a river running through our soul, downtown New Port Richey is a truly special place to be. Our historic Florida community is perfectly preserved, full of life and character, yet not wanting in modern amenities. It’s early, but we could not be more excited for this year. Projects like Keiser University’s state-of-the-art campus, the historic Hacienda Hotel, and the Commons on Grand food hall are paving the way for additional downtown development. Businesses like ADAPT Freshness, the Butcher’s Block, United Hands Wellness Center are reaffirming our commitment to healthy living. We can’t wait to share with you all that New Port Richey has become, and invite you to come along for the journey. We promise it’s worthwhile. Learn more about our community at www.DowntownNPR.org

Bringing Pets to Life

Mike Rowe, of Dirty Jobs Fame, Spotlights Local Artist, Lynne Simone

Local artist, Lynne Simone recently became a Facebook sensation when on a whim, she painted a portrait of Mike Rowe’s famous dog, Freddy, and tagged him on the social media platform. Within an hour, Mike saw the portrait and was struck by the uncanny resemblance. Lynne was pleased that he loved it and mailed him the painting. Along with a post in Freddy’s own words, Mike shared a photo of it with Freddy posing alongside his likeness. As they say, the rest is history. “I do all kinds of fine art painting, but painting pets is very rewarding to me as an artist because my clients are trusting me to bring their most beloved fur babies to life,” Lynne said. “I work from photos and am often challenged with lighting issues or missing ears, especially if the animal is no longer with us, so when the customer gives their approval it is that much more satisfying to me. I strive to capture the personality in each one and find that the eyes truly are windows to the soul, just like in people portraits. If the eyes are not spot on, the twinkle isn't there and it could be just any animal. An emotional response from a client is the absolute best thing. When a client cries, I am delighted because it means I have captured the essence of their animal.” “I have been an artist as long as I can remember, always drawing and doodling,” Lynne said. “My first pet portrait was done in pastels about the age of 10 and I still have it. I studied Fine Art at SUNY New Paltz in New York way back in the day, but do not have a fine art degree. I began in graphic design which was a bit too structured for me and then family led me from NY to Florida. It was here studying under private instructors where I learned the most. I’ve had the pleasure of studying under Antonio Caparello (who worked under James Rosenquist), Diane Becker, a Hernando County artist who specializes in portraits and brought me to the "next level" in my work. More recently, I studied under Fred Mannarino, an amazingly talented cubist, who was my friend and mentor and sadly passed away in 2019. I have also earned a Silver Brush Educator designation.” “I’ve always had my hand, literally, in something creative, even while raising my kids. The passion has always been there even when the time was limited. But it is now with an empty nest that I found that drive and lost my fear to move forward. The Mike Rowe post helped all that to happen, but I had to be ready and I’m so ready!” “I’ve been a purveyor of painting fun at Painting with a Twist Wesley Chapel, Carrollwood and Trinity for nearly 7 years and I credit that teaching experience with helping me to come out of my shell and be more comfortable with public speaking and presentations. Nothing helps adults get rid of their inhibitions and fear better than wine and good music! I also taught Oil Painting through the Hernando County adult education department before COVID made that class non-essential. I don't know if they will bring it back, but I’m hopeful. I am open to giving private lessons and teaching workshops in pastel or acrylic,” Lynne said. “Currently, I have only one pet. His name is Waldo and he is the best domestic long-haired Maine Coon ‘wanna-be’. Despite being a cat, he acts much like a dog and fills that void until we are in a position to have a pup in our forever home. I did have a German Short-haired Pointer named Boomer who was a rescue dog. He had been hit by a car and it was unclear if he would walk again. Boomer ended up being my running buddy and had the best personality and softest muzzle of any fur baby I’ve ever had.” “One thing I have found this crazy year is that pets are one thing we all share a love for. Dogs or cats - it doesn't matter in the scheme of things when we find comfort and joy in our fur babies and feathered friends.”• ___________________________________________

Trying to Make Sense of Your 2020 Tax Return? By Marcus Hernandez, CEO and President 2020 was an unusual year to say the least. This tax season may be more difficult to navigate because the pandemic brought many new factors into play. Economic stimulus payments, unemployment compensation or Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) you may have received during 2020 will all need to be factored in on your return.

2020 Stimulus Checks Did you get a stimulus check in 2020? If so, did you also receive an IRS Form 1444 letter showing the amount you received? These letters were mailed by the IRS in midJanuary, so if you haven’t received one

by now, you likely won’t. If you are certain of the amount you received, you won’t need the IRS letter, however if you aren’t sure and provide an inaccurate amount, it will not match the IRS records on file and this will cause your tax return to be delayed.

2020 Unemployment Benefits under the CARES Act Did you receive unemployment benefits during 2020? If you received unemployment for 2020 you will be issued a 1099-G, which will include any Federal Subsidy unemployment as well. Unemployment is taxable on the Federal and State levels.

Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) Did you receive a PPP loan in 2020? This program provided an SBA loan to help businesses keep their workforce

8 | LUTZ MAGAZINE | VOLUME IV • ISSUE II | TO ADVERTISE CALL 813-501-4894

employed during the Coronavirus crisis and to assist in covering certain overhead expenses, like rent, mortgage, etc. If you did get a PPP Loan, you must apply for the forgiveness in either an 8 or 24 week period of receipt of the loan. In addition, you must apply for forgiveness of the PPP Loan or it will automatically converted to a loan. Keep in mind that any forgiveness of the PPP Loan must first get reduced by any Economic Injury Disaster Loans (EIDL) received. Note that S-Corp and Partnership tax returns are due March 15, as well as Limited Liability Companies (LLCs) that are treated as an S-Corporation or Partnership. However, C-Corporation tax returns are due April 15. The IRS delayed the E-filing System to mid-February. This delayed start will impact when refunds will be issued. If filing your own tax return this year is confusing, consider hiring a tax professional. Many taxpayers who file their own taxes miss out on eligible deductions and credits, thus losing thousands of dollars in refunds.• __________________________________________

3 cups organic almond butter 1 cup + 2 Tbls coconut palm sugar, split 2 organic eggs 1 tsp baking soda 1 Tbls vanilla 1 1/4 cup water 2/3 cup cacao powder 1 cup chocolate chips, split 1/2 cup dried cherries 1/2 cup sliced almonds 1 Tbls avocado oil

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, line a 13 x 9 pan with parchment. In a stand mixer, combine almond butter, 1 cup palm sugar, eggs, baking soda, vanilla, water, cacao powder, 1/2 cup chocolate chips, and cherries. Start low and slowly move to medium speed, let combine for 1-2 minutes stopping to scrape down sides as necessary. Pour batter into the parchment lined pan. In a small bowl, combine sliced almonds, 2 Tbls palm sugar and avocado oil. Distribute evenly over top of brownie batter. Take remaining 1/2 cup of chocolate chips and sprinkle evenly over the entire pan. Pure protein, chocolatey goodness! With a whopping 144 grams of protein per pan of brownies, this is a great way to "have your cake and eat it too". On the glycemic index, anything below 50 is considered low on the scale. Coconut palm sugar rings in at around 40, coupled with the protein, this makes for a lovely low glycemic treat.
