Lifestyles DEAR GRAND HAMPTON RESIDENTS, It’s hard to believe that summer vacation time is over, a new school year has begun and another holiday season will soon be upon us. November is also time for our Annual Meeting and election of officers for 2017. Your Board of Directors and Committees have been working diligently all year with the common goal of always improving and protecting our quality of life in Grand Hampton. Reflecting on this past year, I have been personally rewarded by the new friendships made, serving as a Board and Committee member, and actively participating in our community events organized by our awesome Lifestyle Director, Nichole Miller. I have developed a much deeper appreciation for Rocco Iervasi, our Community Association Manager; Barry Moon, our Amenities Supervisor, and their entire staff who manage the day to day work load and often times go above and beyond their duties and responsibilities to ensure that our residents are taken care of and happy. In looking around the room at our monthly Board meetings, it’s inspiring to see the same dedicated residents attending month after month. I know how busy everyone is in their daily routine and, believe me, I would never suggest that you attend EVERY Board or Committee meeting. However, it would be great to see some new faces at these meetings. Board and Committee meetings are open to ALL residents. When there has been a serious issue to discuss, we fill the room. Consider stopping by to listen to old and new business discussion and offer suggestions based on your own experience or area of expertise. Our residents represent a wide range of professions and services, cultural backgrounds and have many hidden talents. We encourage you to share your specific interests and passions with others so that we can grow together. We are very fortunate that our Past President, Carol Bellomy, graciously offered to chair the Community Relations Committee (CRC) and Building and Grounds Committee this year even though she no longer lives in Grand Hampton. Our By-Laws do permit a non-resident to serve on a Committee and, without a doubt, we are grateful to Carol for her extensive knowledge, experience and support which she continues to give unselfishly to our community. On the other hand it’s a bit embarrassing that, in a community with over 1,000 residences, there was not one person who came forward to chair these committees. In serving our community, I have developed a stronger understanding of all it takes up front and behind the scenes to make Grand Hampton stand out as a First Class Community. Our employees and volunteers work tirelessly both individually and collectively to strengthen and improve our facilities and lifestyle. New thoughts and ideas keep a community vibrant and fresh. I’d like to offer my pre-election plea to everyone to find just a few hours each month to become involved on a Committee level or commit to running for a position on the 2017 Board. We need your help to continue to make Grand Hampton the best place to call Home! Warmest regards to all, Janet Wasserberger Vice President, 2016 Grand Hampton HOA Board janetcwass@gmail.com LIFESTYLES at GRAND HAMPTON / OCTOBER 2016

Dear Grand Hampton Residents, Many of you may have heard of the recent untimely passing of our fellow Grand Hampton resident, Tampa Police Officer Fred Arnold III, this past August. Fred was a 27-year veteran of the Tampa Police Department. Not only was he a great person with a great way of making people feel good, he was a valued source of information and always gave his time to Grand Hampton, no matter what the cause. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, fellow neighbors, and us, the management team here at Grand Hampton. Fred will forever be remembered by all of us who had the pleasure of knowing him. The Grand Hampton Management Team

Dear Members of the Grand Hampton Homeowners Association,

UPGRADED GATE ACCESS SYSTEM We, at Grand Hampton, take great pride in the many amenities offered to our residents. None add more value and ownership pride to Grand Hampton than the manned gate entry system. We have recently upgraded the ABDi entry system with scanning, face recognition, and mobile login capabilities and although the upgrade will help expedite the process of allowing your preferred guests and vendors into the community, without the assistance of YOU, the resident, the system will never run at its optimal best. Keeping your guest list current and updated, with correct contact information on your profile is crucial to the success of this upgrade. Utilizing the mobile app is another fast and simple way many residents can accomplish this. Information about the website is listed below. Please take the time to set your profile and guest list so the guards at the gate can get your family, friends, and preferred vendors in to see you as fast as possible. Website: log onto www.gateaccess.net/ login to get started. Your community code is: GH. You can also go to the eGrandhampton.com website, click on the gate access link to get you there. If you don’t know or have forgotten your Resident Access 4 digit security code, you would need to contact our office to obtain it at 813 973-8368. Ask for Barry Moon. Office hours are Monday- Friday from 9am-4pm. Mobile App: on your phone, download ABDi GateAccess, and follow the directions. We thank you and appreciate your cooperation in helping us mainstream our gate access system.

6 Important Halloween Safety Tips for Families BY KATHERINE LEE

Argenta’s Cleaning Service Free Estimates

Cordially, Your 2016 Grand Hampton HOA Board of Directors 6

Sew reflective materials on your child’s costume if it doesn’t already come with them. 4. Don’t let young children trickor-treat alone. Safety experts recommend that parents go trick-or-treating with children under 12 and walk closely with them while crossing the street. A Safe Kids Worldwide survey found that as many as 12 percent of kids 5 and under are permitted by parents to trick or treat alone without them. Keep them close to you especially if you are going to a town Halloween parade or gathering. Remember, the streets will be very crowded, and kids will be in costumes, making it difficult to spot your child in a crowd. 5. Check Halloween treats before your child eats them. Tell your child that you must check any treats before they can be eaten. Throw away any candy that has a torn or faded wrapper or no wrapper at all. For small children, check to make sure you remove any candies or toys that are choking hazards. Fill your kids up with healthy treats before you go trick or treating (such as veggies with dip or whole grain pita with hummus); that way, they’ll be less likely to gorge themselves on unhealthy treats while trick-or-treating. 6. Remember to be safe when putting up Halloween decorations. Halloween fun and activities can raise the risk for injuries and accidents. On Halloween, the risk of home fires, burn-related injuries and falls goes up significantly. When using Halloween lights, check to make sure that there are no loose connections or frayed wires, or cracked sockets. Do not use nails or staples to hang light strings and use plastic clips or hooks instead of metal to reduce the risk for electric shock. Do not overload extension cords or sockets and use heavy-duty extension cords for Halloween decorations that require high wattage. Keep candles away from items that could catch fire easily, such as curtains and paper decorations. Look for the “UL” mark on lights and other electrical Halloween decorations before you buy them. This mark indicates that the product has been found to be free of foreseeable hazards such as a risk of electrical shock and fire. Check Halloween References Available costumes for labels that indicate that they’re flame resistant. This doesn’t mean that the costume won’t catch fire -- just that it’s more likely to resist burning.•

Halloween is one of the most fun holidays for children and parents. But when you are celebrating this fun holiday with your family, it’s important to keep some crucial safety tips in mind to keep everyone safe. Here are some important Halloween safety tips for home and trick-or-treating outdoors. 1. Talk about safety tips with your child repeatedly over several days before you go trick-or-treating. Kids will be too excited about going trick-ortreating to hear you if you bring up safety tips right before going out the door on Halloween. Another advantage of talking about safety tips beforehand: Young children often benefit from repetition. If you talk about how important it is to cross the road holding your hand, they are more likely to remember it if you’ve repeated the tip a few times before Halloween. 2. Be mindful about road safety. Safe Kids Worldwide estimates that on average, twice as many kids are killed while walking on Halloween compared to other days of the year. Some tips to keep in mind about safety on the road on Halloween: Kids will be out while it’s dark, so it’s hard for them to see and hard for drivers of cars to see them. Consider having your child carry a flashlight or glow stick. Kids are excited about getting candy. They may dart across the street without checking for cars. Children often cannot see well when wearing masks, big hats, and other costume accessories that can obstruct their vision. 3. Check costumes for fit and safety. Loose-fitting costumes, sharp objects or pins, and masks can all pose risks. Choose accessories like swords that are flexible -- not rigid or sharp. Other tips to keep in mind about costumes: If your child is wearing a mask, hold her hand while crossing the street. If possible, use non-toxic face paint on your child rather than a mask. Try to avoid costumes that are billowing or too long since they increase the chances that a child will trip or catch fire if they are near a candle.

Lifestyles Congratulations to our Volunteer of the Month, Sahar Khan! When your community is an extension of your home, it is easy to give a little of your time to make it more welcoming and share the goodness of what you have with others. I’ve volunteered on some of the kids and adult related events in the community, like the Children’s Easter Egg Hunt, Breakfast with Santa, the 5K, Music festival and the Adult Holiday Party. I also participate in community meetings like the Community Relations committee and Lake Hampton committee which serves as a platform to get together with the other members of the committee to address and solve issues to improve and make this community a safe, healthy, and wonderful place to live with our loved ones. Each event and committee meeting has helped me meet new people, and build better relationships with my community. A community isn’t built on one person and is more functional when everyone lends a hand, and it is truly rewarding to see the smiles and happiness that comes from people working together to help each other out. Having said that, my need to volunteer is a purely selfish one, it

keeps me occupied, it helps me meet new people and it comes with its own set of perks. Thanks and Regards, Sahar

Your HEALTH

Breast Health T

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

he odds are in your favor Although breast cancer is a scary reality for some women, most women will not die from breast cancer. And, improved treatment options have significantly reduced the death rate in women who are diagnosed with breast cancer. However, it is vital that all women take steps to maintain breast health to lower their chances of developing breast cancer. The American Institute of Cancer Research reports that 70,000 cases of breast cancer per year (40 percent) could be prevented with lifestyle measures. Here are some of the best ways to preserve lifelong breast health and reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. • Don’t smoke. Twenty-five to 30 percent of all cancer-related deaths are due 14

to tobacco, and the risk of invasive breast cancer is highest in women who began smoking at a young age. If you currently smoke, talk to your doctor about effective smoking cessation programs. • Maintain a healthy weight, especially after menopause. Excess weight increases estrogen (a hormone) and affects other growth factors. Hormones create a more stimulating environment for cancer cells to grow. • Eat primarily whole foods: whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean protein and low-fat dairy. Limit alcohol and sugar consumption (sugar feeds cancer cells). • Move more. Women who exercise regularly have lower risks for breast cancer. If you have a daughter, encourage her to be physically active. Regular physical activity in adolescence may be protective against breast cancer.

• Get enough sleep. Sleep metabolizes stress hormones. • Limit hormonal therapy (if needed) and use for the shortest possible time. • Avoid unnecessary X-rays. • Research suggests that early pregnancy and breastfeeding may reduce your risk of breast cancer. • Get screened. Aside from lifestyle changes, the most important action a woman can take is to follow early detection guidelines. Breast cancer can be more effectively treated when caught in the earlier stages. Florida Hospital Wesley Chapel is home to the latest diagnostic imaging technology, including 3D mammography. To schedule your mammogram, call (813) 929-5555.•
