Tiger Beach with Eli Martinez and Shark Diver Magazine By Pat Ford
You’ve got to be a little bit crazy to think that swimming with sharks is a good idea. Make that 10 to 14 foot tiger sharks and you’ve got to be seriously disturbed…..but what an experience. Eli Martinez runs SharkDiverMagazine.com and organizes a number of trips each year to Tiger Beach in the Northern Bahamas aboard the Dolphin Dream, a liveaboard dive boat operating out of Palm Beach. Hunter Ledbetter and I joined Eli last October and our five days of diving was everything we expected and more.
We left Palm Beach in the evening, woke up in the Bahamas to clear customs, and then motored for about 3 hours to Tiger Beach. We were completely out of sight of land and I literally have no idea where we were, but right below the boat were a whole lot of sharks. The first afternoon was a ‘shakedown’ dive to test cameras and get used to swimming with a bunch of lemon sharks that ranged from 50 to 300 lbs. The next morning Eli jumped with a milk crate box full of very old, frozen dead fish. He swam over to the center of a large white sand patch and the lemon sharks clustered around him while the divers knelt on the sand around him. Eli had explained what was going to happen and that the most important thing was to keep an eye on the tiger sharks at all times. Good idea! It wasn’t long before a monstrous image appeared out of the misty sea as a 14 foot tiger shark headed towards the chum and Eli. What followed over the next 5 days was truly amazing as Eli played with up to 4 tiger sharks at a time and a dozen lemons and reef sharks.
The photos tell the story but on the last day the tigers seemed to pick me out of the crowd as a substitute for Eli even though I didn’t have any food. About a dozen times one would swim directly at me, roll back its eye lid, open its mouth and try to take a bite out of me. Not being as skilled at shark wrangling as Eli, my reaction was to shove my camera in its face and then push it away with my other hand. It wasn’t like I had much of a choice. There was a thousand pound tiger shark coming at me with its mouth open and the only thing expendable was my camera. Neither the camera nor Myself suffered and damage but it sure made some exciting photos for Hunter. To learn more about Tiger Beach and Shark Diving check out sharkdivermagazine.com

Golfito, Costa Rica Are Coastal Fisheries in Decline? By Dr. Martín Aróstegui
I have fished all over the world with family and friends. Many of my fishing adventures have been well documented in this wonderful magazine. Over ten years ago I fell in love with the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica and have returned there on fishing adventures many times. My favorite place is the town of Golfito, which remains the same as it was many years ago. Over the years, my family and I have had great fishing adventures, including the capture of many fishing world records. In recent rips to Golfito I started noticing a decline in the number and variety of fish we encountered and the trend continues in a negative direction.
Last year we encountered an offshore long line that was miles long and witnessed multiple dead sailfish hooked and floating dead. Closer to shore we have encountered many commercial fishing boats placing long lines that target inshore species. Marlin and Sailfish are being killed in long lines for food even though many economic studies have shown that a live Marlin or Sailfish is worth a lot more than a dead one because of the positive economic impact of recreational fishing. Relentless fishing pressure on coastal fisheries will only lead to the collapse of the fishery and economic ruin of the commercial fishermen. The recreational fishermen will go somewhere else and take their tourist dollars with them. The negative impact is already being felt. It is time for Costa Rica to take notice and act to protect the future of their marine environment.

Divers 4 Heroes Honors Eleven Combat Wounded U.S. VeteransWith Memorable Scuba Diving Outing in Bimini By John Bell
Photo Credits Debbie Rivera/Divers 4 Heroes ALICE TOWN, BIMINI, THE BAHAMAS. Representing The Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps, eleven men recently entered an underwater realm of reefs, wrecks and sharks off the coast of Bimini where they maneuvered freely and for a moment, left troubled memories and disabilities at the dock. For the avid diver, it’s an endless debate on the top dive destinations, but what is not in debate is that Bimini consistently ends up on that list, and that the historic Bimini Big Game Club and Resort offers one of the best dive experiences in The Bahamas, an archipelago of 700 islands sweeping across 500 miles of open ocean. “Bimini has no shortage of great dive sites: Reefs, Wrecks, Walls, Drift Dives, our famous Atlantis Road and truly amazing Shark and Wild Dolphin Encounters - you name it,” said Michael Weber, General Manager of the 51-room Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina (www.biggameclubbimini.com), where the veterans stayed. “We’re also providing unique dive encounters early in 2014 with the elusive Great Hammerheads which annually congregate off our shores in Bimini.” Tiny Bimini, with some 1,500 permanent residents, was a short plane ride for the special unit of veterans departing from Fort Lauderdale. The flight, aboard Tropic Ocean Airways’ new Cessna Caravan Amphibian was a great start to the diving adventure.
“These were brothers and it was a privilege to provide them with the transportation,” said Tropic Ocean partner and founder Rob Ceravolo, a Navy Top Gun-rated fighter pilot. “Divers 4 Heroes is an outstanding organization and I was happy to be part of this trip.” Founded in Key West in 2007, the non-profit Diver 4 Heroes organization (www.divers4heroes.org ) has served hundreds of warriors with all levels of abilities. It’s goal, according to Debbie Twillman, co-founder and executive director, is to introduce the gravity free environment of our underwater world to all warriors who have been injured—mind, body or spirit—with the use of SCUBA. “The therapeutic value to this type of program for wounded warriors is priceless,” said a Purple Heart Wounded Warrior. Working with dive operator Scotty Gray of Blue Iguana Charters and his team, Divers 4 Heroes provides all levels of instruction and training for certification. “No gravity, no ache, no pain….I’m freeeee,” wrote one Purple Heart recipient, who sought relief and a better quality of life through SCUBA. In Bimini, the group enjoyed the recently opened Bimini Bull Run (www.biminibullrun.com) at-the-dock shark cage encounter and several offshore dives, encountering a variety of Reef Sharks, Triggerfish and Sting Rays. “It was indescribable being in the water watching these beautiful, huge animals feed and interact with other sharks, and these amazing warriors swimming with them,” said Twillman, a DiveMaster from Lakeland, Florida. Twillman credited several partners making the Bimini trip possible: Wounded Warrior Project, Life Underwater, Tropic Ocean Airways, Rock Bottom Divers, Bimini Big Game Club Resort and Marina, Blue Iguana Charters, Oceanic Worldwide, Stuart’s Conch Shack, Regal Automotive, Dive Patch International, SDI (ScubaDivingInternational) and SeaLife Cameras.

MARINE RESERVES ARE GOOD FOR FISHING AND THE ENVIRONMENT By Dr. Mart铆n Ar贸stegui Photos de Pat Ford Decades ago coastal communities around the world started noticing a decline in their fish populations. As the trend worsened considerable scientific research was carried out to learn about the causes and bring about possible solutions. Many factors have been identified; most importantly, environmental degradation, water pollution, climate change and overfishing. In order to bring about positive change, all must be addressed. Marine Reserves have been established all over the world to combat overfishing and to enhance the coastal marine environment. By definition, Marine Reserves are zones where all animals and plants have permanent protection and therefore cannot be removed. Marine Reserves have been proven scientifically to protect the coastal environment and at the same time enhance fisheries outside their borders. The future of our coastal environment may very well depend on the establishment of Marine Reserve networks throughout our coastlines. Reserves have already shown that they can be very effective environmental management tools in tropical and temperate zones.

CAPTAIN CHASE CAMACHO NAMED TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR FOR PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME CELEBRITY BILLFISH INVITATIONAL IN BIMINI Members of the Hall of Fame Players Classic Foundation To Host Tournament April 24-27
By John Bell
Captain Chase Camacho, who learned to fish at the legendary Big Tuna Grounds off Montauk, Long Island and honed his skills off the Florida coast, has been named Tournament Director for a one-ofa-kind billfish tournament combining hard driving blue water action
with a chance to fish with the best of the best from the NFL. Camacho, though his Chase N Dreams Yacht Charters, has been offering blue water charters from Bimini since last April. Camacho will be recruiting competitive anglers for the two-day billfish tournament which will give them a shot at over $250,000 in prizes, a tremendous gift bag per angler, and a chance to fish with a Pro Football Hall of Fame Player or NFL Legend. “This is about as good as it gets,” said Camacho, who was voted one of the top five charter boat captains in South Florida. “Some great billfish action, the historic Bimini Big Game Club and camaraderie with guys who are gridiron legends.” The tournament will be based at the Bimini Big Game Resort and Marina in Alice Town—an internationally known destination for hosting top-of-class fishing tournaments for more than 50 years. Bimini, home base too many sport fishing legends, including Ernest Hemingway and western author Zane Grey, was recently ranked #3 in the top ten fisheries of the world by Sport Fishing Magazine. The tournament, according to Camacho, is open for up to four registered anglers per boat—just 22 boats total. “We’re already seeing a lot of interest,” noted Camacho. To register online go to www.HOFBimini.com and a brief tournament video overview can be viewed on the homepage. Several sponsorship levels are available including the Title sponsorship. The catch and release only tournament, which will adhere to IGFA Tournament rules, will target all billfish species, including Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, Spearfish and Swordfish. Awards will be presented in the overall angler and team categories and additional awards will be given to the high point boat each day.
