very January hoards of Spanish sardines and other baitfish congregate about 15 miles off the Island on Isla Mujeres, Mexico. The schools of baitfish soon attract schools of sailfish. A short ferry ride from Cancun, Isla Mujeres has developed into an Atlantic sailfish paradise for American sportfishing boats, who are chasing the schools of sailfish. I try to get to Isla Mujeres and ride with my friend Martin Bracamonte on his customized Hatteras ‘Perfect Game’. The daily plan is simple run to the area where the sails were the day before and look for frigate birds. At first they will be high in the sky, searching, waiting for the sailfish to push the bait to the surface. If the frigates are diving in a V formation, they are on bait being pushed by sails and that’s where you want to be. It’s one of the most fascinations sights in the ocean…I will never get tired of watching sailfish balling bait. Contact the “Perfect Game” at Cancunboatclub.com and book a trip!

AN AMAZONIAN ADVENTURE ON THE MOTHER SHIP KALUA By Dr. Martin Arรณstegui

52

SOL & MAR MAGAZINE

A

few weeks ago, my wife Roberta and I traveled to Barcelos Brazil to go on a fishing adventure on the Rio Negro. At this time of the year, conditions are usually very good for peacock bass fishing in the Amazon. This year was a bit different in that the water levels in the Amazon basin were higher than normal. When the water is high, the fish stay inside areas where the river floods the rainforest and are hard to find. When the river is low, the fish must leave their cover and stay in the river, where they are easier to catch. Roberta and I had a great trip even if the conditions were not perfect. The fishing guides from the Kalua worked extremely hard to find places where we could catch plenty of fish. Many times we ended up traveling through narrow paths in order to get into secluded lagoons that had plenty of fish. We also were able to take advantage of using small artificial lures and casting small peacock bass flies. We ended up catching a large number of fish every day and having a great time. I highly recommend the Kalua for anyone interested in a great fishing adventure in the Amazon. If interested please check out their website www.kaluapesca.com.br or call my friend in Florida- Alan Zaremba at (954) 609-3671

few years ago, my son Martini and my wife Roberta traveled with me to Thailand to fish for the legendary Mekong Catfish. During our stay we had the opportunity to visit food markets, flower markets and street vendors, we were fascinated by the sights and smells of these very interesting places. While these markets cater mostly to the local people, they also are visited by many tourists interested in learning more about the culture of the country.

¿Qué es la micropigmentación?

E

Because when the strike comes, there’s no better combination for precise boat handling. Twin Disc’s EC300 Power Commander electronic propulsion control paired with an MGX QuickShift marine transmission deliver a degree of maneuverability unrivaled in the marketplace. From full ahead to full reverse, the combination provides smooth, fast and exacting control essential for safely backing down on a big fish. And at slow speed, the throttle is sure, confident and instantaneous. www. baylissboatworks.com

TECHNOLOGY N2K-ENABLED STEREOS ALLOW FOR SOPHISTICATED USER INTERFACE NMEA2000-enabled multi-function displays are a great way to consolidate data from numerous devices and make it more accessible, and save on valuable helm space. Prospec Electronics delivers two stereo receivers that easily connect into an NMEA2000 network, the Infinity by Harman PRV450 and Infinity by Harman MBB400. Now, controlling music through a GPS, chart plotter or fish finder is as easy as touching a screen. The INFPRV450 is a stand-alone receiver that has a color 3.5” TFT screen. By installing a stand-alone unit, audio can still be played in the event of failure of other components. Also, the Infinity receiver allows for more user information than what would appear on just the GPS device. www.prospecelectronics.com

TECHNOLOGY NEAR-TRAGEDY INSPIRES NEW SAFETY DEVICE Scott Smiles’ 42’ boat sank in 50 seconds, leaving him, a friend and their two PFD-clad young sons clinging to a cooler and EPIRB the only items he had time to grab. The harrowing experience inspired Smiles to develop Life Cell, a completely new approach to safety equipment storage. Making its Miami International Boat Show debut, the innovative Life Cell from Life Cell Marine Safety is a self-contained, buoyant device that holds user-supplied safety and survival equipment. Best of all, it provides flotation assistance for up to eight adults, depending on the model. The basic Life Cell, The Trailer Boat, is designed to assist 2–4 people. www.lifecellmarine.com

TECHNOLOGY UNIQUE BOAT LIFTS EASE BOARDING, KEEP THE VIEW Crossbeams on boat lifts are unsightly and make boarding difficult. Golden Boat Lifts’ GatorVator™ uses a patented design that eliminates this structural element. It creates a clean, open look at the dock and eliminates the potential for annoying bumped heads. With only two drive spools and less cable than other lifts, the GatorVator is 33% faster. It’s engineered so that the boat is always aligned port to starboard. And with a two or four motor configuration, adjusting the boat’s stern-to-bow level provides quick draining when needed all with the touch of the remote. Available in three or four post configurations, the GatorVator adapts easily to existing piles, boat houses and narrow areas along a dock. Models are available with capacities up to 30,000 lbs. www.goldenboatlifts.com
