inter is coming and so are the blackfin tuna. As the temps drop and the cold fronts start to move through the Keys, the pilchards appear in the shallows around the Keys. The arrival of the bait means that the tuna and other pelagic species

are not far behind. The best fishing for blackfin tuna is probably key west. The light tackle guides have a plan that almost always produces tuna for their clients and there are non better at this than Capt. RT Trosset and Capt Patrick Cline who work together on RT’s 36’ Yellowfin, SPINDRIFT. The first requirement for their brand of live bait chumming is a live well system that will keep 50 lbs of pilchards alive all day. If the bait doesn’t stay alive and frisky, non of the plan works. First on the agenda is catching the bait. It’s difficult to maneuver a 36’ boat into 2’ of water but the Yellowfin does just fine. If the bait is too shallow, Patrick simply gets out and walks over to it. At times, bait is easy. At times it can take most of the morning to catch enough. Some look at that as waisted fishing time, but after doing it with RT for decades, I can assure everyone that no matter how long it takes, it will be worth it. Patience is a virtue. Once the bait is on board, RT will run to one of the wrecks offshore and anchor up-current. Anchoring is 250’ of water is no easy task and the anchor and line have to work together efficiently. Once in position the chumming starts. Netfuls of live pilchards are simply thrown into the water. It helps to throw them in different areas so that they all just don’t school up and run back to hide under the boat. I’ve 20

had days when nothing came up and days when the water boiled with fish after the first throw. The first to show up are usually bonito… trophy sizes bonito that are tough to land, but they aren’t tuna so they are a nuisance. The tuna range between 15 and 30 lbs and can be taken on any kind of tackle including fly. They hit artificial lures and almost any baitfish fly. You’ll need a 12 weight fly rod with a sinking line and a 20 lb tippet, but tackle isn’t the biggest problem in landing a tuna…it’s the length of the fight! Sharks follow the schools of tuna and over the years have figured out that a lot of “sick” tuna appear under those white things that float over the wrecks. There are days that you simply can’t land a tuna due to the sharks. It’s funny but the sharks don’t eat the bonito, only the tuna. RT uses heavy spinning rods with 30 lb braid and tries to get the tuna in as soon as possible. If it’s a long fight, the sharks will find it and then hang around the boat, waiting for the next one. I’ve landed a lot of tuna on fly over the wrecks, but I’ve lost a lot more. If the sharks are too thick, you have no choice but to move on…you’ll never land a tuna. Heavy tackle is really the only way to go, but it is total chaos when the bite is on. It’s not unusual for everyone to be hooked up at the same time. Noone spends the entire day chumming for tuna…it’s usually an early morning or late afternoon thing. In addition to the tuna, time is spent chumming the reef for yellowtail, cero mackerel and kingfish or live baiting for sailfish or wahoo. Best thing about Key West in the winter is that you can catch most everything that swims on a good day and there are lots of good days. 22

n the past 30 years I traveled all over the world in a quest for great fishing adventures. Many times, I have been asked which has been my favorite fishing destination. I actually have had great experiences from many different parts of the world. It was over twenty years ago that I traveled with my family to Alaska for what turned out to be a great fishing adventure. I will never forget the first time that I witnessed the return of millions of salmon to the streams of their birth in order to spawn and complete their circle of life. Alaskaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s majestic mountains, glaciers, streams and lakes provide truly spectacular landscapes that I will never forget. As the salmon return, so do killer whales, brown bears, eagles and many other wildlife that are there to take advantage of the enormous bounty provided by the returning salmon. I have had the opportunity to witness all of this during my many return visits to this great fishing destination. My favorite fishing in Alaska is fly fishing for the different species of salmon and also the big rainbow trout that return to the rivers and streams to eat salmon eggs during the spawn. This year I had to postpone my trip to Alaska due to the pandemic. I do hope that I will be able to return next year after I get vaccinated to prevent getting sick from the corona virus. This indeed has been a very difficult year for everyone. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hope next year is a lot better! Now I want to share with you some great memories from Alaska.

n los últimos 30 años viajé por todo el mundo en busca de grandes aventuras de pesca. Muchas veces me han preguntado cuál ha sido mi destino de pesca favorito. De hecho, he tenido grandes experiencias en diferentes partes del mundo. Hace más de veinte años que viajé con mi familia a Alaska para lo que resultó ser una gran aventura de pesca. Nunca olvidaré la primera vez que presencié el regreso de millones de salmones a los arroyos donde nacieron para desovar y completar su ciclo de vida. Las majestuosas montañas, glaciares, arroyos y lagos de Alaska brindan paisajes realmente espectaculares que nunca olvidaré. A medida que regresa el salmón, también lo hacen las orcas, los osos pardos, las águilas y muchos otros animales salvajes que están allí para aprovechar la enorme recompensa que brinda el salmón que regresa. He tenido la oportunidad de presenciar todo esto durante mis numerosas visitas de regreso a este gran destino de pesca. Mi pesca favorita en Alaska es la pesca con mosca de las diferentes especies de salmón y también de la gran trucha arcoíris que regresa a los ríos y arroyos para comer huevos de salmón, durante el desove. Este año tuve que posponer mi viaje a Alaska debido a la pandemia. Espero poder regresar el próximo año después de vacunarme para evitar enfermarme por el Corona virus. De hecho, este ha sido un año muy difícil para todos. ¡Esperemos que el próximo año sea mucho mejor! Ahora quiero compartir con ustedes algunos buenos recuerdos de Alaska.

anny Puig, el Tarzán de los Mares o el Hombre Cocodrilo como se le califica, es un profundo conocedor de la fauna, por sus encuentros mano a mano con cocodrilos (lagartos americanos), tiburones, serpientes venenosas, osos y todo tipo de animal peligroso. “Me gusta todo lo salvaje, cazar y pescar con las manos o con una lanza” comienza Manny diciendo. “Mi predilección es agarrar un cocodrilo, subirlo hacia arriba y soltarlo. Es un encuentro constante con animales peligrosos de la naturaleza, lo mismo un tiburón que un pez grande, una serpiente venenosa o un oso. Me gusta ponerme a prueba con esos animales salvajes y escapar ileso.” ¿Cuándo nació en ti la pasión de ser un cazador aventurero que enfrenta el peligro constantemente? “Desde los cuatro años yo agarraba con las manos lagartijas, cangrejos y ranas. Yo veía las películas de Tarzán y los indios. Siempre me gustó meterme debajo del agua y en la selva. No me interesaba ningún otro deporte. Me gusta entrar al mundo salvaje, luchar con un cocodrilo (lagarto americano) o un tiburón. Me gusta cazar y pescar de manera extrema con mucho riesgo y aventura. Yo realizo la cacería con lanza para probarme a mí mismo contra el animal salvaje. Tengo que usar mi inteligencia y habilidad física y contar con la bendición de Dios para no morir.” ¿En cuantas ocasiones has estado en riesgo de perder tu vida enfrentando a animales salvajes? “Yo no puedo contar las veces que me he jugado la vida. Cuando me sumerjo en el agua yo sé que es un riesgo muy grande para mí agarrar

con las manos a un tiburón o un cocodrilo (lagarto americano). Los animales salvajes son feroces y tratan de sobrevivir y hasta se matan entre ellos mismos, como los osos por ejemplo que matan a los cachorros. Ese es un mundo violento. Sobreviven a base de su furia, su inteligencia y su habilidad de matar. Antes me ganaba la vida con la pesca submarina, ahora soy protagonista de programas de televisión en Outdoor Channel (Savage Wild), Animal Planet, Discovery, Televisión Española, Univisión 23, Telemundo, MTV y muchos otros programas de la televisión estadounidense. Lo mismo en un canal de cacería, que de ciencia, explicando el comportamiento de la fauna, con un tema diferente. Yo tengo un estilo propio de capturar los cocodrilos con las manos por debajo y compito conmigo mismo. Me gusta tener la libertad en la selva de hacer lo que yo quiera”, expresa Manny. Manny Puig ofrece conferencias en escuelas. “Me gusta responder las inquietudes de la gente a cualquier pregunta. Yo trabajo desde Hawai, New York, California y Alaska, donde nadé con osos y ballenas asesinas. En ocasiones he estado a punto de perder la vida ante un oso corriendo hacia mí, que de pronto se ha detenido y me ha perdonado. Yo sé trabajar con las serpientes venenosas.” ¿Piensas estar hasta el resto de tus días siendo un cazador aventurero en peligro extremo? “Yo vivo el día a día y no pienso en el futuro. Cada día planeo una aventura diferente. También hago esculturas de los animales salvajes que he capturado. Me gusta hacer obras artísticas de animales que conozco, especialmente de aquellos que admiro por sus capacidades físicas e inteligencia. Construyo lanzas de acero inoxidable y esculturas de bronce. Soy cazador, pescador, aventurero y artista, pero siempre

del mismo tema de la vida salvaje. Si alguien quiere aprender lo que yo hago le recomiendo que éste es un trabajo muy peligroso, en el cual puede perder la vida, un brazo o una pierna.”, afirma Manny finalmente. José A. Fernández, su fotógrafo personal, expresa: Manny tiene la habilidad de entender el comportamiento de los animales salvajes y peligrosos como muy pocas personas. Cuando él entra al mundo salvaje, especialmente acuático, Manny sabe distinguir cual es el animal alfa (el líder) y él se presenta ante el animal como un animal alfa también, por lo cual el animal lo respeta inmediatamente. Ese conocimiento lo utiliza Manny para dominar y convencer al animal, demostrándole que su presencia es superior. El lucha con el animal y le cambia la actitud agresiva enseguida. Lo ha hecho con tiburones, lagartos (cocodrilos americanos) y osos salvajes.”

Corona Virus Questions and Answers

What is the status of Corona Virus infections around the world? First the bad news. “As of December 14th 2020, there have been more than 72.6 million cases around the world. These cases have resulted in 1.6 million deaths around the world. The number of cases is increasing and so are the numbers of deaths as a result of complications from the virus. The good news! “The United Kingdom, Canada and the United States have given emergency authorization for the administration of the Pfizer vaccine. We expect that the vaccine will be a game changer in the control of this terrible pandemic. What is the status of the Corona Virus in the United States? First the bad news. “The US is experiencing a huge surge of the Corona Virus throughout the country. Cases and deaths are breaking records for the pandemic. “As of December 14th 2020, there have been more than 16.4 million cases and 300,051 deaths from this terrible pandemic. Last week the US saw a new record of more than 3000 deaths in a single day. “The seven-day average of new cases is 210,000 cases per day and more 152

than 2,300 deaths per day. Hospitalizations are at an all-time high of more than 106,000 per day. Hospitals intensive care units are completely full in many places and healthcare workers are very stressed from months of crisis. The good news! “The US Food and Drug Administration has given emergency approval for the vaccine produced by Pfizer and BioNTeck. Another vaccine producer, Moderna has also applied for emergency use authorization of a similar vaccine. Moderna may receive emergency use authorization soon. It is very important to keep in mind that these vaccines may not be available to the general public until late spring or early summer of 2021.” How do these vaccines work? “These two vaccines, Pfizer and Moderna work in similar fashion. The two vaccines use a synthetic version of corona virus genetic material, called messenger RNA or mRNA. This genetic material programs a person’s cells at the site in injection to produce many copies of a fragment of the virus surface called a spike. The person’s immune system reacts to this spike protein by producing many antibodies that then can attack the virus if the vaccine’s recipient comes in contact with the virus. “This fragment of the virus or spike, cannot produce an infection on the vaccine’s recipient. It is actually part of the surface coating of the virus. “The vaccines require two shots about four weeks apart for full immunization. SOL & MAR MAGAZINE

How safe is the Pfizer vaccine that received approval? “The Pfizer vaccine was given to thousands of volunteers a few months ago. These volunteers were followed closely and no serious reactions or serious side effects were detected. All of the information on this vaccine trial was submitted for review by US Food and Drug Administration advisory panel of medical experts. The panel recommended approval of the vaccine. The Food and Drug Administration then reviewed all of the data and agreed with the panel of experts and gave approval. The final step was the approval by the scientists in the US Center for Disease Control, who also gave their approval. “The vaccine is not approved for children under 16 years of age or recommended for persons with history of severe allergic reactions. “The vaccine does have minor side effects that can be expected such as fever, malaise and arm pain at the site if injection.” How effective is the Pfizer vaccine that has been approved? “The data submitted by Pfizer shows that the vaccine is 95% effective. The vaccine will prevent most people from getting sick and also prevent those that may get sick from getting a severe case of the virus.” Now that the vaccine will be available, who is going to get the vaccine first? “The CDC has recommended that the vaccine be given first to front line medical workers such as nurses, doctors and technicians that are treating patients in emergency rooms, intensive care units and covid-19 wards in hospitals throughout the country. Next to receive the vaccine will be elderly people and care givers at extended living facilities and nursing homes. These high-risk groups will be followed by front line workers, people with preexisting medical conditions and people over 65 years of age. The general public will then be in line to receive the vaccine. The vaccine needs 154

further study when it comes to children. Once the vaccine is deemed safe and effective for children, plans will be developed for their vaccination. Dr. Arostegui are you planning of taking the vaccine? “I will line up to receive the vaccine as soon as it is available to me.” Now that we have a vaccine can we stop using masks and social distancing? “Absolutely NOT! The virus is now surging all over the USA and many other countries. It will be a few months before the general public will be able to get a vaccine shot. We are almost there, but we must remain alert and prevent getting infected. I strongly recommend that you wear a mask when social distancing is not possible and during all indoor situations. Please avoid large gatherings, indoor restaurants, bars and gyms. Keep family gatherings to a minimum. If you need to visit someone, do it outdoors and keep social distancing at all times. Please stay safe!”

El número de casos está aumentando y también el número de muertes como resultado de las complicaciones del virus.” ¡Las buenas noticias! “El Reino Unido, Canadá y Estados Unidos han otorgado una autorización de emergencia para la administración de la vacuna Pfizer. Esperamos que la vacuna cambie las reglas del juego en el control de esta terrible pandemia.” ¿Cuál es el estado del Corona Virus en los Estados Unidos? Primero las malas noticias. “Estados Unidos está experimentando un gran aumento del virus Corona en todo el país. ¿Qué tan efectiva es la vacuna Pfizer que ha sido aprobada? “Los datos presentados por Pfizer muestran que la vacuna tiene una efectividad del 95%. La vacuna evitará que la mayoría de las personas se enfermen y también evitará que las que puedan enfermarse contraigan un caso grave del virus.” Ahora que la vacuna está disponible, ¿quién se vacunará primero? “El CDC ha recomendado que la vacuna se administre primero a los trabajadores médicos de primera línea, como enfermeras, médicos y técnicos que atienden a pacientes en salas de emergencia, unidades de cuidados intensivos y salas de covid-19 en hospitales de todo el país.
