Pieces of

Soldotna History

THE HISTORY OF THE CITY OF SOLDOTNA begins with homesteading that occurred in the late 1940’s, although Native Alaskan Athabaskan peoples had also lived and used the areas around the Kenai River for many thousands of years prior to the City’s establishment. World War II veterans were among the very first Soldotna homesteaders. The area was opened for homestead filing in 1947 and veterans were granted a 90-day preference over non-veterans in choosing and filing for land. Transportation to the area was difficult; some flew or took a barge to Kenai, then hiked eleven miles to Soldotna, while others took a train to Moose Pass and sloshed seventy miles through the mud. In 1947, just a few cabins of the first homesteaders dotted the woods and surrounding area of what is now Soldotna. Today, just a few of the 1948 “livable dwellings” that claimed acreage for early homesteaders are on display as part of the Soldotna Historical Society Museum on Centennial Park Road. The cabins are furnished much as they were for homestead living. The Museum’s collection of historic buildings also boasts the first Soldotna Chamber of Commerce log tourist center, built in 1961. There are handmade utensils and other mementos of homesteading displayed here along with historic pictures of progress on the Kenai Peninsula. Gas lanterns still hang in the Slikok Valley School building, the very last of the territorial log schools. Built by homesteader parents in 1958, it was originally located about four miles south of Soldotna, and when Kalifornsky Beach Road was completed in 1960, students were bussed to Soldotna. An outstanding display of wildlife specimens is featured in Damon Hall; this large building was specifically constructed for the Alaska Centennial. Also on display are Native artifacts and the grounds are landscaped with Alaska flowers and plants. The Museum is free and opens for the season on May 15 – September 15. Hours are 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Saturday, 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm Sunday, and closed Mondays. 14

2018 SOLDOTNA VISITOR GUIDE

Business Comes to Soldotna SOLDOTNA’S FIRST POST OFFICE was housed in Howard and Maxine Lee’s homestead cabin. It served as the post office from 1949-51. It sits on its original Kenai Spur Highway and Corral Street site and has been restored with the building looking much like it did in its original days. The post office was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the US Department of the Interior in 2008. The old post office is open to the public from June through September during the Saturday Farmer’s Market or by appointment. The construction of the Sterling Hwy. from Anchorage In 1959 residents and the Kenai Spur Highway established the occurred in the 1950’s, resulting in increased settlement in Greater Soldotna the area. In 1952, residents Chamber formed a Community Club of Commerce. and in 1959 established the Greater Soldotna Chamber of Commerce. Oil was discovered in 1957 in the Swanson River area, giving the population and economy another boost. Soldotna became a fourth-class city in 1960 and, in 1967 obtained first-class status. The city of Soldotna developed ten miles east of Kenai, and the two cities share an integrated economy while maintaining their unique independent characters. The two are often referred to as the “Twin Cities”. In 2016, Soldotna became a Home-rule city. Today, Soldotna is the thriving hub of the Kenai Peninsula. Located 140 road miles south of Anchorage at the strategic junction of the Sterling Highway and the Kenai Spur Highway, Soldotna holds the administrative headquarters of the Kenai Peninsula Borough and the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. The city of Soldotna took its name from the existing Soldotna Creek that empties into the Kenai River. Some say “Soldotna” came from the Russian word meaning, “soldier”. Others say it is from an Athabascan Indian word meaning “the stream fork”.

I am blessed to represent the Kenai in the Alaska Senate, which includes Soldotna; a wonderful place to live work and play.

Last Frontier Last Frontier The central Kenai Peninsula is blessed with an abundance of excellent, locally-produced craft beer. Since 2006, craft breweries and brewpubs in Soldotna have been brewing award-winning beers for the enjoyment of locals and visitors alike. Currently, in Soldotna, there is one brewery and one brewpub in operation. Visitors to Alaska should be aware that breweries and brewpubs operate under different rules by state law. Breweries are only allowed to sell 36 ounces per person per day for consumption on site in their taprooms; brewpubs are not limited in this way. Both are restricted to selling a maximum of 5 gallons per person per day for consumption off-site. 24

THE KENAI NATIONAL Wildlife Refuge is one of over 500 units in the National Wildlife Refuge System, a nearly two million acre network of lands and waters set aside to help conserve our nation’s fish and wildlife heritage. Soldotna is home to the KNWR’s headquarters. The KNWR is characterized by diverse habitats and wildlife. Moose, bears, bald eagles, and salmon are just a sampling of the wildlife variety here. It’s not unlikely for Soldotna residents to have some of these animals visit their yards throughout the year. Wildlife viewing is one of the refuge’s key attractions and visitors can observe animals in alpine tundra, wetlands, and boreal forest. Fishing, camping, and

26

hiking opportunities also draw visitors from Alaska and from around the world to the Refuge’s Skilak Wildlife Recreation Area. The Swanson River and Swan Lake canoe systems provide an opportunity to really get into the backcountry and observe wilderness at its most pristine. Kenai National Wildlife Refuge was first established as the Kenai National Moose Range in 1941 to protect moose. In 1980, the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) changed the name and purpose of the refuge. The refuge now exists to protect wildlife populations, the variety of habitats they need to survive, and for you, the visitor, to enjoy.

The refuge maintains a visitor center/ headquarters on Ski Hill Road in Soldotna. Opened in May 2015, the new Visitor Center houses the state-of-the-art interactive “Icefield to Ocean” exhibit hall, a welcoming lobby with wood-burning masonry heater, and regularly shows wildlife films and hosts ranger programs in a spacious multipurpose room. Two historic cabins have been restored near the Visitor Center. The 1940s Elwell Cabin, visible from the exhibit hall windows, is open to the public daily. The 1920s Andrew Berg Homestead Cabin is open during guided tours and scheduled field trips.

The Keen-Eye Trail, adjacent to the refuge visitor center is a scenic ¾ mile walk through spruce forest and wetlands with a lovely view of Headquarters Lake. Frequently seen wildlife includes moose, eagles, ravens, owls, snowshoe hare, red squirrels, arctic terns, songbirds, and waterfowl. The nature trail is a relaxing way to stretch your legs and enjoy nature after traveling the very busy Sterling Highway. For those wishing for a longer hike, the 2 mile Centennial Trail is the answer. THERE ARE 16 PUBLIC USE CABINS located in the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Getting there can be a thrilling adventure in itself, as most require the use of boats, aircraft, hiking, or skiing. MAKE SOLDOTNA YOUR HOMEBASE

to explore the vast wildlife trail system known as the Kenai Peninsula Wildlife Viewing Trail (trail maps are available at the Soldotna Visitor Center). This trail is a string of scenic overlooks, backcountry drives, nature trails, and other sites where you can look for your favorite Alaska wildlife. Whether you’re visiting Alaska for the first time or a lifelong resident, the KPWV Trail offers the inside scoop on the best places to go. Try it out for photography, birding, or a family outing.

2018 SOLDOTNA VISITOR GUIDE

No matter what the season, with 65 sites to explore on the Kenai Peninsula, you’re bound to see something interesting! In Soldotna, we recommend beginning your wildlife viewing excursion at the Kenai Peninsula Wildlife Refuge Visitor Center, located on Ski Hill Rd. The KNWR Visitor Center has nearly three miles of well-maintained trails and boardwalks that meander through diverse habitats, including a stop at Headquarters Lake. Have binoculars and cameras ready for the chance to see porcupine, muskrat, moose, and a plethora of birds, from small, Boreal

Chickadees to the vocal, Great Horned Owl. A second recommendation, is visiting the Slikok Creek State Recreation Site, located off West Endicott Drive. The entrance to this site is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, but don’t let that deter you from finding this gem! This quiet tributary to the Kenai River is home to two, scenic woodland trails that dead-end at the Kenai River. Look for waterfowl, eagles, moose, and a variety of salmon and trout. After exhausting the in-town wildlife sites, venture in any direction for more opportunities for wildlife encounters.

If an animal moves closer to you, back away to maintain a safe distance. Restrain pets or leave them at home. Stay in or next to your car when watching bears. Learn to recognize signs of alarm. Be respectful of nesting and denning areas, rookeries, or calving grounds by treading lightly or avoiding an area altogether if it’s habited. Leave “orphaned” or sick animals alone.

BIG FOUR:

Never approach or pursue an animal to take its picture: use binoculars or telephoto lenses to get a better view.

BEARS LIVE THROUGHOUT THE SOLDOTNA AREA AND IT’S POSSIBLE TO ENCOUNTER ONE WHILE YOU’RE FISHING, HIKING, OR TRAVELING THE ROAD SYSTEM. Traveling in Bear Country BLACK AND BROWN (GRIZZLY) BEARS are both found throughout the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Be alert and use your senses to evaluate fresh bear signs such as tracks, scat, claw marks, and strong scents. Make noise to avoid surprising a bear. Be especially careful along noisy streams, in thick brush, and where visibility is poor. If you see a bear—stay calm. If the bear does not notice you, quietly leave the area from the same direction you arrived. Keep your eyes on the bear. If a bear does notice you, face the bear, wave your arms, and talk to it calmly. Try to appear larger by standing close to your group. If a bear approaches you, stand still. Do not run! If a bear attacks, fall to the ground and play dead. Lie flat on your stomach, or curl up in a ball with your hands behind your head. Keep your pack on.

Fishing in Bear Country If a bear approaches you while you have a fish on the line, cut the line and leave the area. Fish remains attract bears. Toss all fish waste into deep, fast-moving water. Do not put fish waste in dumpsters or on shore. Cut all fish carcasses into small pieces so the water current can carry and disperse them more easily. When you carry fish out, store them in sealed, plastic garbage bags to decrease odors that could attract bears on paths and trails. Store the following in your vehicle, in bear-proof containers: all food, bait, line, tackle, fishy clothes, and garbage. Avoid fishing during times of low visibility (dawn, dusk, and at night) to prevent bear encounters. Always keep your dog on a leash and under control to prevent negative bear encounters.

TRAIL

ETIQUETTE

ALWAYS READ trailhead guidelines if posted at a trailhead. There may be specific rules for the trail you are on. Here are a bunch of tips to make it easier to share the trail with others. ■ Pack it in, pack it out! Leave no trace! Pack out all trash, leftover food, toilet paper, and hygiene products. ■ Stay on the trail; do

not cut switchbacks or take shortcuts; this helps eliminate trail erosion.

■ Stay to the right on wider paths. Pass on the left. ■ Groups are encour-

aged to yield to single and smaller group hikers. Also, groups should hike single file or take no more than half of a wide trail.

■ Those hiking downhill should yield to those moving uphill. ■ Bikers yield to hikers and horses; hikers yield to horses.

Greet other trail users, whether it’s a smile, nod, or simple, “Hello!”

■ Take a Picture. A

pretty rock or a bunch of flowers deserve to remain where they are.

■ Report vandalism to the trails operating agency. ■ Have control of your

pets; know which trails are pet friendly.

THE KENAI PENINSULA has excellent birding to offer as a part of your Alaskan adventure. Alaska has 492 documented species of birds with another 24 unsubstantiated species.  The Kenai Peninsula has 286 of those species and at least a dozen more unconfirmed species.  As the number of birders increases here on the Kenai Peninsula, the number of new species increases as well.  There is always a chance that your birding trip will produce a new species to add to the list. Birding on the Kenai Peninsula takes you from alpine birding to saltwater birding in Homer and Seward.  The Kenai and Kasilof River flats provide excellent birding opportunities.  The lakes, rivers, ponds, and creeks as well as back roads produce a variety of birds.

KENAI PENINSULA BIRDING SOLDOTNA IS AT THE CENTER of the highway system here on the Peninsula. You can bird by vehicle, boat or on a variety of hiking trails. The Kenai Peninsula has great birding all year long. In early spring we have many migrant birds that stop to refuel here before going further north.  Summer birding is good as we have a wide variety of birds that raise their families here along with some shorebirds already headed south. Fall gives us a good look at more migrants. Winter birding gives us a chance to enjoy our hardy birds that stay here year round. There are two different Birding Festivals in the spring. Birders of all ages and abilities are welcome to attend these informative festivals. In the greater Soldotna area, the Kenai Peninsula Birding Festival will take place on Thursday, May 17th- Sunday, May 20th, 2018 and in Homer, the Kachemak Bay Shorebird Festival on Thursday, May 3 10th- Sunday, May 13th, 2018. The Kenai National Wildlife Refuge bird checklist can be found on Google.  The Refuge hotline number for wildlife and birding is 907262-2300.  In Homer the birding hotline number is 907-235-peep. Come and bird with us on the Kenai Peninsula.  Bring your cameras, bird books, and binoculars!  4

NATIVE PLANTS

THE VARIETY OF BLOOMS blanketing the Kenai Peninsula seems endless, and the flowers seem to grow everywhere, from high alpine crags to lowland meadows and marshes, and all the ecosystems in between. While most of these blooms are pleasing to look at, more than just a few can be used for human consumption or medicine. A few of the wildflowers one may encounter throughout the Kenai are listed here with a brief description, a quick mention of any special use it may have, and whether or not it is toxic. It is extremely important that one identify a plant before attempting to eat it. The Soldotna Visitor Center has regional guidebooks for sale or reference. More information can also be found at the Cooperative Extension Office located at 43961 K-Beach Road. Visitors are encouraged to stop by for a visit when in the area. Call for business hours at 907-262-5824.

4. Cloudberry

1. Watermelon Berry

Other Edible Berries: Blueberry, LowBush Cranberry, Crowberry, Raspberry, and Salmonberry Other Toxic Berries: Devil’s Club (red berry) and Elderberry (red berry)

The fruit is yellowish white or orange or light red when ripe. These berries are commonly found in damp, wooden areas and similar to one grape on a stalk. They’re available in the spring with a cucumber-like flavor.

2. High-Bush Cranberry

This berry is not really a cranberry but a shrub, and has received the name through common usage. They grow in cool woods, thickets, or on rocky banks. The fruit grows in clusters on short branches, and is available in the late summer and fall. Highbush cranberries make tasty jellies.

3. Northern Red Currant

The currant is a shrub that can reach 5 feet tall. The berry is black or red, smooth and translucent. Find them in the woods or swamps and sub-alpine areas. They are available in the late summer.

These plants only get several inches tall on slender stems and grow singly in bogs, open tundra, or forest. They produce single tasty berries resembling peach-colored raspberries. Unripe cloudberries are hard and sour, but as the berries ripen, they soften and become sweeter.

5. Baneberry

(Highly Toxic) Baneberry can cause burning of the mouth and throat, salivation, severe stomach cramps, headache, diarrhea, dizziness and even hallucinations. This berry grows from a long stem in clusters of white or red berries that have black spots on each end. The leaves are elongated with three lobed, serrated edges. They ripen midJuly through August and resemble the High-Bush Cranberry.

6. Fireweed

Fireweed is completely edible and extremely common. A member of the primrose family, its roots, stalks, leaves, and flowers of the younger plants make a tasty salad. It’s high in vitamins and contains some protein. Fireweed reaches peak bloom towards the end of July to early Aug.

7. Beachhead Iris

An early bloomer, this wild Iris boasts dark purple blossom burgeons atop thick blade-like stalks. They’re common in many different habitats from riverbanks to meadows. Much of the plant’s parts are toxic when consumed.

8. Forget-Me-Not

Alaska’s state flower can be found growing low, in subalpine and alpine meadows and on slopes throughout the Kenai. South facing slopes are the most common areas to find this beautiful blue flower blooming in late May to June. The plant occasionally produces a pink or white bloom.

4

9. Nootka Lupine

Lupine is a perennial plant growing, throughout Alaska, on dry slopes and fields. This upright showy blue flower grows on stalks that can be up to 16 inches in height. Lupine are poisonous to eat!

10. Wild Chive

5

6

11. Northern Geranium

A pretty plant that grows short in grassy areas, the Northern Geranium’s blossoms are light blue or violet, and its roots can be refined into an effective astringent. View this flower between June and August. Both the Dena’ina and Aleuts used this flower as a sore throat treatment.

12. Kamchatka Lily

Also known as the Chocolate Lily, Kamchatka Lilies are native perennial forbs that grow in moist tide flats, meadows, open forests, rocky beaches, and stream banks in the lowland to subalpine zones. Flowering from May to July, the flowers are dark greenish brown to brownish purple and come with an unpleasant smell. Although slightly bitter, some people still collect and eat Chocolate Lily bulbs.

13 7

8

9

13. Monkshood

Monkshood is the most poisonous plant native to North America. These unique purple flowers can be found around Soldotna in June through late August. They’re found occasionally in meadows from sea level to alpine, but they’re most common in subalpine meadows.

2018 SOLDOTNA VISITOR12 GUIDE

35

THE LARGEST RECREATIONAL FISHERY in Alaska is supported by the Kenai River, a glacially turbid stream draining the central Kenai Peninsula (originating at the outlet of Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing). This popular river supports excellent runs of anadromous (sea-run) King, Silver, Sockeye and Pink Salmon, both resident (exclusively fresh water) and anadromous Dolly Varden Char, in addition to resident Rainbow Trout. Lake trout are common in the Kenai and Skilak Lakes of the Kenai River System.

➊ KING (CHINOOK) SALMON

THE VERY name “King” connotes a large fish, but not all King Salmon caught are necessarily large. A combination of genetics, food availability, and the life history of each fish determines the size of a salmon. However, the Kenai River boasts more than its fair share of King Salmon 36

2018 SOLDOTNA VISITOR GUIDE

both in name and size; the world record (sport caught) King Salmon was taken in 1985 from the Kenai River and weighed in at a whopping 97 pounds and 4 ounces. Two distinct runs represent the largest freshwater King Salmon fishery in Alaska. The early run usually begins to enter the Kenai River around mid-May, reaching a peak in June and finishing by the end of the month. Salmon from the late run enter the river in early July and provide excellent fishing until the end of the month. Bring along an ample supply of patience and courtesy, because the Kenai River King Salmon fishery is extremely popular and on occasion can become a bit crowded. Operate your boat in accordance with the “rules of the road” and extend to your fellow angler the same courtesies you would like to receive. Give boats with “fish on” the widest berth possible to avoid line tangles.

At its best, King Salmon fishing is not a sport recommended for the impatient. On the average, it requires approximately 31hours of fishing before an angler boats a king. However, you can improve your chances by hiring a guide. On the Kenai River, guided anglers are about three times as efficient as non-guided anglers.

➋ SILVER (COHO) SALMON

AS WITH the King Salmon, there are also two runs of Silver Salmon that enter the Kenai River. The early run arrives in late July, but most anglers choose not to fish for Silvers until the close of the King season on July 31st. This run peaks in early to mid- August and is complete by early September. The late run follows in early September and closes September 30th. Many professional guides also offer silver salmon charters in addition to their normal King Salmon packages.

➌ RED (SOCKEYE) SALMON

RED SALMON return to the Kenai River beginning in late May. These early run fish are bound for the Russian River drainage, but prior to arriving at the Russian River, the only area where these fish concentrate is at the confluence of the Moose and Kenai Rivers in early June. From mid-June to early July, Red Salmon can be harvested at the confluence of the Russian and Kenai River. Both of the areas are designated as “fly-fishing-only” areas, which means that the terminal gear must be an unweighted fly and not specifically that a fly rod must be used. The late run of Red Salmon enters the Kenai River in early July, peaking in late July, and is finished by early August. These fish are bound for numerous tributaries throughout the Kenai River System including the Russian River, as well as the mainstream Kenai River from the outlet of Skilak Lake to Kenai Lake. The entry pattern is gradual until approximately July 20th, when it peaks for about one week to ten days, after which the abundance of Red Salmon rapidly declines. The late run may be harvested at the Russian River from about July 20th through the close of season on August 20th.

➍ PINK SALMON

ON “EVEN YEARS” (2014, 2016, 2018 etc.) harvestable numbers of Pink Salmon are available in the Kenai River. These fish are favored by youngsters because of their abundance and their aggressiveness towards nearly any spinning lure. This species also offers an excellent challenge to the angler equipped with light tackle. Most Pink Salmon are taken from shore and are readily harvested in the Kenai River downstream from Skilak Lake.

➎ RAINBOW TROUT

YEAR-ROUND RESIDENTS of the Kenai River, Rainbow Trout are abundant from upstream of the Soldotna Bridge to Skilak Lake. The Kenai River does not have a natural run of Steelhead Trout, but it boasts trophy size Rainbows throughout the river system. Good fishing occurs from Moose River to Skilak Lake and from Skilak Lake to Russian River. The area from Kenai Lake downstream to and including Skilak Lake within one half mile of the Kenai River is managed as a “catch and release” area. In this area, only single hook, artificial lures may be used and all trout must be released.

➏ DOLLY VARDEN

BOTH RESIDENT and anadromous populations of Dolly Varden are supported in the Kenai River System. Available throughout the entire year, preferred fishing areas are from Naptowne Rapids upstream to Skilak Lake and from the inlet of Skilak Lake upstream to Kenai Lake. As with Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden are conservatively managed in the upstream area of the river. Anadromous Dolly Varden begin to enter the river in early July and continue into September. These fish spawn in the fall and over winter in the rivers and lakes. In spring (April - May) they are intercepted by anglers in the lower river below Soldotna as they return to the Cook Inlet. Always check ADF&G regulations closely before fishing. For general fishing questions, call 907.262.9368. For a local, ADF&G Fishing Report, call the fishing hotline at 907.262.2737. For current fish counts, call 907.262.9097. One can now purchase a fishing license online to print at home at

May 17, 1985

WORLD RECORDS Were Made to be Broken AT ABOUT 7AM ON MAY 17TH, 1985, Les and his fishing partner, Bud Lofstedt, were fishing out of the Pillars Drift for early season King Salmon on the Kenai River when Les hooked the lunker of his life! The large fish had plenty of spunk and gave the pair an exciting hour or so of adventure as it led them first upriver and then back down. When Les hooked the fish it went airborne and crossed Bud’s line. Bud managed to get the line untangled and reeled in, but when he headed the boat upstream after the fish, Les was knocked off his feet to the bottom of the boat. He managed to hold on as the big fish led them up to Honeymoon Cove and back to the Pillars. More problems came up when they tried to land the behemoth: the net was just too small. After three attempts, they finally beached the boat and manhandled the fish to shore. At the time, neither fisherman realized

that the fish was a potential world record so they continued to fish the rest of the morning. At 2pm in the afternoon they finally got around to weighing the fish on the official scaled located at Echo Lake Lockers. The fish may have lost as much as two pounds in the five hours since it was hooked, but even at 97.25 pounds, it soundly beat the previous record of 93 pounds. Les’s world record salmon is proudly displayed in the Soldotna Visitor Center. Les won $500 in that year’s derby, brought the world record home to Soldotna and the Kenai River, and endured a long run in the hot seat. Les Anderson, holder of the world record for his 97 ¼ pound King Salmon wished everyone the best in beating the record and “taking the heat off of me!” Well, not in Les’s lifetime did that happen. Les Anderson died on August 26th, 2003 holding

“...even at 97.25 pounds, it soundly beat the previous record of 93 pounds.”

the current record. After 19 years of notoriety, Les was ready to give up his crown as King Fisherman. Les was always willing to share his story and give photos with a genuine smile, handling his fish fame with a wonderful personality- a truly great sportsman. The vast majority of the top ten certified, sport caught, Chinook or King Salmon ever recorded came from Alaska’s legendary Kenai River. However, even on the Kenai, true monster salmon are fewer and farther between. Hooking a larger King requires a great deal of patience and a dose of luck. Then landing it is still another whole thing. The Soldotna Visitor Center also has the second largest, sport caught, King Salmon on display. It weighed 95.10 pounds and was caught on the Kenai River at Sunken Mile, river mile 18, by vacationing, Pat Plautz from Oregon in 1990. Perhaps, this is the year that someone will break the elusive, one hundred pound mark, a new record that could undoubtedly stand for another dozen years or even, forever?

ONE DAY

FOUR WAYS: EXPLORE LIKE A LOCAL

WHEN PLANNING AN ALASKA TRIP, here’s a little secret, Soldotna is only within two hours of any accessible area on the entire Kenai Peninsula. One can park a RV, set up a tent, or rent a room right here where all the conveniences of a large town exist without having to relocate every day. For more information on any of these communities, please call the Soldotna Visitors Center at (907) 262-1337 or online at: www.visitsoldotna.com

WEST

CITY OF KENAI (11 miles) and CAPTAIN COOK STATE PARK (36 miles) Head west of Soldotna to the City of Kenai, which is located right on the bluff of the Cook Inlet. From Soldotna take the Kenai Spur Hwy. west to mile 11.5 and check out the Kenai Chamber of Commerce & Visitor Center, which hosts an incredible museum, movies, and a wealth of information on the area. They will also let you know if the Beluga whales have been spotted from Kenai. Behind the KCCVC, take a self-guided, walking tour of Kenai’s Old Town (maps available in the visitor center). Visit one of the oldest-standing Russian Orthodox Churches in Alaska, the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary; established in 1791, this church still has services every week. Two popular air carriers are Ravn Alaska and Grant Aviation. Car rental agencies and taxis are available at the Kenai Municipal Airport. Uber and Lyft drivers are on the Kenai Peninsula, as well. 62

2018 SOLDOTNA VISITOR GUIDE

It is usually best to make reservations for lodging or guided excursions; however, it is essential during the peak months of June and July. It is not unusual for businesses to require a deposit to secure reservations. It is very important that you ask a lot of questions before paying anyone. Be very specific about the services that you expect for your payment and get an agreement in writing. For example: Guides: does the package include rain gear, fishing gear, fish cleaning, shipping or storage; is there any refund if the weather prohibits fishing; exactly how many hours will you get for your money? If someone offers you an additional amenity, be sure to ask if there will be any additional charge for the service and what their policy is should the river go to catch and release. Lodging: is there a refund policy if they overbook and don’t have your room available or if it does not meet your standards of safety and cleanliness? A booking agent may be helpful when you are trying to secure lodging or guiding services. For the more independent travel planner, visit the Soldotna Visitor Center Vacancy Program online at www.visitsoldotna. com or call our staff for additional help 907-262-1337.

CLOTHING

The key to being comfortable and warm is light layering. It may seem warm outside, but you never know when a cool breeze might come up, especially when you are on or near the water. The fall and winter traveler will want to layer a little heavier. Sunglasses are a good idea any time of the year. Our sun is bright in the summer and in the winter; there may be quite a glare off the water, snow, or ice.

WILDLIFE VIEWING

Often the best viewing is on slightly overcast days and in the fall (late August and September). It is important to keep a respectable distance when viewing any wildlife; binoculars and a good camera are helpful. It is common to see bear wherever fish and berries are plentiful. For this reason, it is recommended to carry bear spray and to hike in groups. Moose and Caribou may seem very docile, often strolling along the highway or through residential areas; however, they can be fiercely protective of their offspring and may suddenly become quite aggressive towards humans and pets. If you travel with a dog, it is important to keep your dog tethered for their protection and your own. Remember to be considerate and pull off the road when viewing wildlife; sudden and unexpected stops may result in a collision. Keep a sharp eye out and give all wildlife plenty of room.

MOSQUITOES

Although some years are not as bad as others, one should always be prepared for the worst when it comes to mosquitoes. Wear clothing that covers your arms and legs. Avoid wearing bright colors, perfumes and scented hair sprays or lotions as these attract mosquitoes. Most stores and tackle shops supply a wide variety of insect repellent.
