There is concern regarding the possible drilling for oil and natural gas in the Alboran Sea, which runs between the south coast of Spain and the north coast of Africa. ‘Co-ordinadora Verde de Andalucía’ and other Environmental groups are headlining concerns about fears that the area under threat is a massive 330,000 hectares of the sea floor off the coasts of the provinces of Almería, Granada and Malaga. Seven authorizations have been issued in this area, and it is feared that drilling could commence any moment, decimating the marine life – this area is considered to be one of the largest biological reserves of marine life in the world.

Telefonica to cut workforce in Spain by 20% Spanish telecoms giant Telefonica said it plans to cut its workforce in Spain by about 20%, or some 6,000 people, over the next three years as a costcutting measure

The company will also link pay and benefits more to employees’ productivity rather than the inflation rate, it said in a presentation to investors in London that was posted on the company’s website. The head of the group’s business in Spain, Guillermo Ansaldo, said the job cuts would allow the company to gain “flexibility”. Telefonica employs some 30,000 people in Spain out of a total global workforce of 269,000 people. The announcement of the job cuts by the former state monopoly is grim news for a country already grappling with an unemployment rate of just over 20 percent, the highest level in the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development. Earlier this month the government lifted its forecast for unemployment this year to 19.8 percent from 19.3 percent

previously. “It is not a good moment to carry out staff adjustments of such a significant size,” said Labour Minister Valeriano Gomez. Telefonica also said it plans to sell “non strategic assets”, mostly real estate, in the 201113 period worth 600 million euros ($870 million). Telefonica posted a record 2010 net profit of 10.2 billion euros, a 30.8 percent jump over the previous year as weakness in Spain was offset by strong growth in the rest of Europe and Latin America. The company’s revenues in Spain were down by five percent last year. Earlier Thursday Britain’s Dixons Retail, Europe’s number two electrical goods retailer which runs PC World stores, said it was closing its 34 lossmaking outlets in Spain due to weak consumer demand in the country.

Spain police net biggest ever ETA arms cache The biggest ever arms cache at an ETA safe house has been found by Spanish police in a raid that recovered almost 2,000lb of bomb making equipment

The discovery raised concerns that a splinter group of the violent separatist group ETA was planning to break its seven-month ceasefire with an attack in Spain. Security forces seized bomb making equipment including 1,870lb of the agricultural fertiliser, ammonium nitrate, and detonators at a farmhouse in the Guipúzcoa village of Legorreta. Two brothers from the town near the border with France were arrested and identified as Jose Aitor Esnaola, 40, and Igor Esnaola, 36, an interior ministry statement said. The pair are suspected of supplying weapons and explosives to the terrorist group and had been named in documents discovered in previous raids against ETA. Last weekend, French police detained two of the most-wanted ETA suspects after an exchange of gunfire in which a police officer was injured. The two incidents have raised concerns

that a ceasefire declared by ETA last September and made “permanent” in January, was to be called off. ETA broke its previous “permanent ceasefire”, declared in March 2006, with a car bomb at Madrid airport in December

2006 that killed two people. Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero, Spain’s Prime Minister, said the government was committed to continuing the fight “to reduce the possibilities” of any violent action.

Zapatero seeks investors in Singapore

The president of the Spanish government, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, VISITED Singapore LAST WEDNESDAY to meet with the leading political and economic authorities in the country in the hope of attracting investors from this international investment centre to Spain.

Inquisition over Prince William’s ‘snub’ to Crown Prince Felipe of Spain

When the Prince of Wales was told by Crown Prince Felipe of Spain at a gala dinner in Madrid last week that a solution must be found for Gibraltar, there was great surprise at why a centuries–old dispute had been stirred up. Mandrake can disclose that the heir to the Spanish throne was, however, acutely aware of a diplomatic incident even closer to home. Felipe had learnt that he and his wife, Princess Letizia were not invited to the royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. “It is extraordinary,” a Spanish official told me “Only King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia were invited.” What made the snub to Felipe — who, like Prince Charles, is a great–great-great–grandson of Queen Victoria — even more surprising is that space had been found at Westminster Abbey for the owner of a Spanish tile company

who donated generously to Charles’s charities, Manuel Colonques, and his wife, Delfina. His firm, Porcelanosa, met a “significant proportion” of the costs of a lavish charity dinner at Buckingham Palace in February. Charles was a guest of honour at the wedding of Felipe and Letizia, a divorced television newsreader, in Madrid in 2004. He attended both the ceremony and the sumptuous banquet that followed. On Friday, St James’s Palace confirmed that only the king and queen had been invited. “You would need to check with the Spanish royal household as to who they have opted to attend,” the official said. That night, however, a nervous courtier suggested that Charles had asked for Felipe and Letizia to be added to the guest list.

After the success of his last meetings in China with some of Asia’s biggest investors, and after a six-hour flight, Zapatero will now embark upon the second stage of his tour. His first meting was to be with Singapore’s former prime minister and current Minister Mentor, Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of this small, but propserous state; and afterwards he will meet with the prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong, who will be hosting a dinner in his honour. According to information from Spanish government officials, the leaders are expected to sign a an agreement to promote cultural cooperation, and

an important treaty that will eliminate double taxation for companies. Zapatero will make a point of explaining the reforms undertaken by his government to further the country’s economic recovery, with the aim of attracting investors from Singapore, which has the third highest per capita income in the world and whose economy grew 14.5% last year. Tomorrow, Zapatero will have a working breakfast with the heads of the country’s main banks and investment funds before flying back to China to take part in the annual Boao Forum for Asia on the island of Hainan, where he will meet with the Chinese president, Hu Jintao, and heads of state of the leading emerging markets - Brazil, Russia, India and South Africa - who will be holding a parallel conference at the same time.

Spain sees tourism jump due to Arab revolts We fit Activity in Spain’s tourism sector jumped 2.4 percent in the first quarter of the year as sunseekers shunned rival resorts in Egypt and Tunisia because of anti-government uprisings there, a trade association said this week.

The Canary Islands archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean and major cities on the mainland were the main beneficiares, thanks to the recovery of business tourism and to foreigners taking short breaks, the Exceltur umbrella tourism trade association said. There was “a notable increase of 2.4 percent of tourism GDP in the first quarter, the biggest increase of all the sectors of the economy,” it said. “The strong and unexpected surge in activity is mainly due to the current redirection

of overseas demand from Egypt and Tunisia, which has benefited the Canaries almost exclusively.” Predictions of continued instability in the eastern Mediterranean “augurs well for the second quarter in coastal areas of Spain linked to foreign demand,” it said. As a result, Exceltur said it was raising its tourism sector 2011 growth forecast 2.2 percent, almost double its January estimate. Spain has struggled in recent years to compete with beach destinations in Egypt’s Red Sea

and Tunisia’s Mediterranean coast which are cheaper and of a similar flying distance from its key markets like Germany and Britain. But since the unrest sweeping the Arab world began in Tunisia in early January, tourists have been changing their travel plans and many have opted for the Canary Islands which tend to offer all inclusive packages like those in the seaside resorts of Tunisia and Egypt. Spain slipped from third to fourth place among the world’s most visited countries in 2010,

behind France, the United States and China, according to figures from the UN World Tourism Organisation. The Spanish economy contracted 0.1 percent in 2010 after shrinking 3.7 percent in the previous year following the collapse of a property boom that had fueled growth for more than a decade. The government has predicted the economy will grow 1.3 percent this year.

Cervantes character star of the stage in Shakespeare’s birthplace “Double Falsehood”, the Shakespeare play inspired by Cardenio, one of the characters in Cervantes’ “Don Quixote”, was performed for the first time in Stratford-upon-Avon, the bard’s birthplace, last week.

The play was first performed in 1727, but presented by the theatrical empresario Lewis Theobald as an “adaptation” of Shakespeare, as the authorship of the work was the source of much controversy for many years. Last year, experts finally concluded that “Double Falsehood” was written jointly by Shakespeare and his contemporary John Fletcher. The Royal Shakespeare Company has put together this production to be performed in the poet and playwright’s birthplace three centuries after Theobald confirmed that he had in his possession three different manuscripts of a work entitled “The History of Cardenio”, based on a section of Don Quixote and then subsequently lost, allegedly in a fire. The first part of “Don Quijote de la Mancha” had been translated into English in 1612 by John Shelton, and the Cardenio episode inspired this joint work by Shakespeare and Fletcher, which was performed in London the following year. Leopald explined that “Double Falsehood” was the

Spain not stepping up Libya role

Spain will not step up its role in the military operation in Libya, Foreign Minister Trinidad Jimenez said at a NATO meeting in Berlin, resisting pressure from alliance members France and Britain “Spain chose to provide capacity to monitor the arms embargo for a period of three months, and the no-fly zone,” Jimenez told reporters. “This is the force that Spain is providing and will continue providing in the future, which is the authorisation that was asked for in parliament,” Jimenez said. Spain has committed four F-18 fighter jets and a refueling aircraft to help enforce the no-fly zone and an F-100 frigate, an S-74 submarine and a CN235 maritime surveillance plane to help enforce the arms embargo. It has also allowed NATO to use two military bases, at Rota and at Moron de la Frontera in the

south of the country. But it has not carried out air strikes. France and Britain have been pressing other members of the 28-nation NATO military alliance to contribute combat jets to an air campaign against Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi’s forces. After nearly a month of operations the campaign has so far failed to change the balance of power on the ground. Only six out of NATO’s 28 members are conducting air strikes while French and British warplanes are carrying out half of the flights, according to Paris.

Elche sends palms - Pope & Royal Family

The city of Elche today sent the traditional handcrafted white palms to Pope Benedict XVI, the Royal Family and the Prime Minister, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, in readiness for the celebration of Palm Sunday. The Serrano-Valero family, who have been crafting the traditional white palms for decades now, created special palms for the Pope, the Vatican Nuncio, Queen Sofia, the Infantas Cristina and Elena and Princess Letizia. Completely smooth palms measuring three metres in height have been sent to King Juan Carlos, Prince Felipe and the Duke of Palma Urdangarín Iñaki. The decorative palm sent to Benedict XVI stands over three metres tall, weighs about three kilograms and is topped by a cross of Caravaca.

“It is the largest and most elaborate palm, so that it is visible from St Peter’s Square where the Pope will display it on Palm Sunday, before it is placed on the altar at the Vatican”, explained Francisca Serrano, from the ValeroSerrano family workshop. The white palm gifted to Queen Sofia has been created with fine palm, and is defined by its “style” and “elegance” with a figure of the Virgin of the Assumption, patron saint of Elche, made out of white plam at the top of the piece. “This is a very special palm, as the fine work of the palm is much more expensive and delicate”, Serrano explained. “Each year we strive to avoid repeating past motifs; it is very important to be creative and to surprise,” she added. The palms for princess Letizia and the Infantas Elena and

Cristina, measuring 2.5 metres, are more informal and have a younger air about them. Flowers, crosses and other religious figures complete the pieces, topped with a chalice in the case of Doña Elena and Doña Cristina and a ‘Corpus Christi’ for Doña Letizia. These “masterpieces” departed from Elche this morning to Madrid and Rome in one vehicle and protected by special wooden boxes, which keep them in perfect condition. Up to two days work by six different artisans goes into each palm of this kind. The Serrano-Valero family has also made palms for the royal children - plaited palms with a cross for the boys, and white palms decorated with flowers and virgins for the girls.

Not a particularly impressive expat turn out at the PSOE meeting here in Almerimar last week: 7 Brits in total! The meeting was very informal with no speeches or manifesto’s handed out. You can see what they are about on their web site and the general flavour of their position is that with at least 230€ million of debt, issues still with SUR and a lack of service provision, their priority will be on unearthing the full extent of the problem and then making sure that residents get the service they are paying for through their rates. Interestingly I was asked my opinion on what they should do, so I gave then this 3 point plan: 1. Stop talking about the Expats by individual country and unite them as one entity. Engage them in the process of recovery by setting up a working group that involved the PSOE, their partners and a representative from each expat nationality here in Almerimar. 2. Hold an annual Almerimar Day, one big fiesta that everybody is encouraged to attend: get some pride and community spirit going. 3. Hold a series of monthly events: a band each month in the Square, a kids weekend over by the Asador and the playgrounds, a market in Darsena 2, a street party in Darsena 1 for example. Local businesses and people can fund and run it, the elected party just needs to facilitate and support it. Should probably point out that the above 3 points are my views and not those of the PSOE! - Chris Marshall You can hear all the latest Almerimar Street Talk, brought to you by Nautica Directa, on a weekly podcast on www.

Expats dividing their time between Britain and Spain should be able to claim back the cost of Spanish medical treatment on the NHS from 2013. The Cross Border Healthcare directive, which affects all EU states, will allow patients to have elective surgery at a state hospital wherever they live instead of travelling back to the UK. Implementation of the move – originally scheduled for 2011 – has been hampered by disputes between countries. But it is now expected that all states will sign up by 2013.

‘Universal’ cancer jab health Vaccine that stops all tumours in their tracks could be here in two years

A ‘universal’ vaccine that could revolutionise the treatment of cancer could be available in just two years. The TeloVac jab is part of a new generation of drugs that use the body’s own defences to fight the disease, stopping tumours in their tracks. TeloVac has already been given to hundreds of Britons with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest forms of the disease. But it is hoped it will be effective against many other tumours, including those of the skin, lung and liver. Breast and prostate cancers may also be within its grasp. Together, the six forms of the disease claim more 70,000

lives a year in the UK. In the case of pancreatic cancer, which killed actor

Patrick Swayze, survival rates have barely improved in the past 40 years, and patients typically die within six months of diagnosis. Just 3 per cent survive five years, and it is the fifth biggest cancer killer in the UK. Although vaccines usually prevent disease, the TeloVac jab is designed as a treatment. Rather than attacking the cancer cells, like many existing drugs, it harnesses the power of the immune system to fight the tumours. It works by encouraging the

immune system to seek out and destroy an enzyme called telomerase. Found at high levels in many cancer cells, telomerase effectively makes them immortal, allowing them to live on when healthy cells would die – easing the growth and spread of the tumour. In the largest trial of its kind in the UK, more than 1,000 men and women in the late stages of pancreatic cancer are either being given the vaccine alongside their normal drugs or treated as usual. The results from the 53 hospitals taking part will not be available until next year but, anecdotally, some patients credit their participation in the trial with giving them an extra year or two of life. In earlier, smaller trials, the vaccine gave those in the late stages of the disease an average of an extra three months. John Neoptolemos, who is co-ordinating the large-scale British trial, said: ‘When you have got pancreatic cancer, it is like a timebomb in people.’ Pancreatic cancer cells are normally invisible to the immune system but the vaccine ‘spots’ the telomerase spilling out from them and kick-starts the fight back. Professor Neoptolemos, of Liverpool University, said: ‘It is like the immune system has a blindfold on and the vaccine takes the blindfold off.’ Healthy cells escape the attack because their levels of telomerase are too low to bother the immune system. This cuts the risk of sideeffects such as nausea and hair loss normally seen with cancer drugs. If the latest study, which is funded by Cancer Research UK, proves the jab’s worth, it could be available to treat advanced pancreatic cancer by the end of 2013. In time, it could be used earlier in the disease – and even to prevent it. Dr Jay Sangjae Kim, the founder of GemVax, the Korean company developing the TeloVac vaccine, said: ‘We strongly believe this has the potential to overcome the limits of other current cancer vaccines and become part of the standard of care not only for pancreatic cancer but for various other types of cancers. ‘In other words, a truly “universal” vaccine will be available in the near future.’ Professor Peter Johnson, of Cancer Research UK, said: ‘We await the results with interest to see if this is an effective treatment.’

How four apples a day can cut cholesterol by a quarter Apples could help us to improve cholesterol levels and lose weight, say researchers.

They found that women who ate 75g of dried apple a day for six months saw levels of LDL cholesterol – the harmful form blamed for clogging arteries – fall by almost a quarter. Levels of other compounds linked to heart disease and strokes also dropped, and amounts of HDL cholesterol, the ‘good’ kind which wards off the hardening of blood vessels, rose by about 4 per cent. The women also lost an average of just over 3lb in weight, despite taking on an additional 240 calories a day from snacking on the fruit. The cholesterol benefits are said to have been triggered by apples’ antioxidants, while the slimming effect has been attributed to a compound which can suppress appetites. Pectin is often used to help jams set, and high levels are also found in apricots, carrots and citrus fruits. Getting the equivalent benefits from fresh apples would require eating four or five a day. Researcher Dr Bahram Arjmandi of Florida State University said he ‘never expected apple consumption to reduce bad cholesterol to this extent’, adding that the results were ‘incredible’.

Although the tests focused on dry fruit, help is at hand for fans of the fresh variety with the recent decoding of the apple’s genetic code, paving the way for crunchier, juicer and healthier produce.

This development allowed the apple to adapt to tougher conditions and sent it along a different evolutionary path from peaches, raspberries, strawberries and other related fruits.

Dr Arjmandi told the Experimental Biology conference in Washington: ‘Everyone can benefit from consuming apples.’

The research suggests that around 65 million years ago, when a comet is thought to have wiped out the dinosaurs, the plant that would eventually give rise to the apple tree underwent a massive and rapid change in which many of its genes were duplicated.

Swimmer-songwriters Whales have their own tunes that spread around the world ‘like hit singles

When Lady Gaga releases a catchy new single, it quickly goes around the world. Now scientists have discovered the same thing happens with the songs of another exotic creature – the humpback whale. The mammals become fixated on new tunes just like people do, and the most popular original whale songs spread globally like hit singles. The discovery has stunned marine experts who say it is the first time such a large, ‘population wide cultural exchange’ has been seen in the animal kingdom. Male humpback whales are famed for the loud, long and complex songs they make during the mating season. Scientists are unsure why the males sing. Some believe it is a way of advertising themselves to females, others that it allows migrating whales to stay in contact. Each song lasts for ten to 20 minutes and the males can sing continuously for 24 hours. At any one time, all the males

in a population sing the same song. But a study, published in the journal Current Biology, shows that this song changes over time and spreads around the oceans. Dr Ellen Garland, of Queensland University, said: ‘Our findings reveal cultural change on a vast scale. Songs move like cultural ripples from one population to another, causing all males to change their song to a new version.’ Researchers recorded songs from six neighbouring populations of whales in the Pacific over a decade. They found that new versions of the songs appear over time and always spread from west to east. It takes two years for songs that appear in the waters off Australia to be heard in French Polynesia. Dr Garland believes that a small number of whales may migrate to other populations carrying the new songs with them, or that they are heard by passing whales. Most of the new songs contain material from the previous year blended with something new. ‘It would be like splicing an old Beatles song with U2,’ she said. ‘Occasionally they completely throw the current song out of the window and start singing a brand new song.’ The researchers suspect whales adopt new songs to make themselves distinct. Dr Garland said: ‘We think this male quest for song novelty is in the hope of being that little bit different and perhaps more attractive to the opposite sex. This is then countered by the urge to sing the same tune, by the need to conform.’

First commercial jetpack is ‘just months away’

...after record-breaking 7 minute test flight It has been the stuff of sciencefiction legend for generations, but the era of futuristic personal spaceage travel may have finally dawned. After completing a gruelling seven-minute outside test flight, the longest ever by a jetpack, the world’s first commercial rocketman suit could be just months from hitting the shelves. Reaching death-defying altitudes of more than 100ft, the Martin Jetpack’s flight last week brought 40 years of development near to a conclusion and the dreams of millions achingly close to reality. Although limited to speeds well below its 60mph capacity, the remotely controlled test, using a weighted dummy pilot called Jetson, smashed records for altitude and air-time. At its unveiling at a U.S. airshow in 2008, the aircraft did not go higher than 6ft - an arm’s reach from a watchful ground crew - or fly for longer than 45 seconds. Given the success of the trial, the first ‘jet-ski in the sky’ could now be dispatched for solo flights by the end of the year at a price of around £50,000 ($75,000) per machine. Designed to be the ‘simplest aircraft in the world’ the Martin Jetpack will be a breeze to fly, according to inventor Glenn Martin. He said: ‘You just strap it on and rev the nuts out of it and it lifts you up off the ground. ‘It’s just basic physics. As Newton said, for every action there is an

equal and opposite reaction. So when you shoot lots of air down very fast you go up and you’re flying.’ Mr Martin says 2,500 people have already signed up for to buy the jetpack, with inquiries coming from Middle Eastern royalty and U.S. millionaires. The two-litre 200-horsepower gasoline engine powers two ducted fans that can soar across the skies at 60mph at heights of up to 160ft. The jetpack, which produces up to 6000rpm (revolutions per minute), carries enough fuel to fly for 30 minutes. Its makers are targeting tourism joy flights, pilot training and private recreational sales. ‘Some just want to dodge the rush-hour traffic and do it in style’, Mr Martin said. But the invention’s immediate deployment is likely to be as a ground-breaking defence tool with the U.S. military, which first tested jetpacks in the 1960s, and U.S. border control the first organisations to take delivery of the device. Mr Martin, a 50-year-old father of two, sees the military version of the jetpack being used in hard-to-access areas, war zones to patrol borders and, if unmanned, to make difficult deliveries by remote control. It could also be used in counter terrorism operations, as an airborne missile platform and mobile surveillance unit.

Quick pint?

Now you can take your time as scientists unveil how to keep beer fresher for longer There’s nothing quite as refreshing as a nice cold beer, but now drinkers may have another reason to raise their glasses in cheer. After much painstaking ‘research’, the secret to the perfect pint may finally have been discovered. For the first time, researchers have identified the main substances that cause the bitter, harsh after-taste of aged beer and suggest that preventing the formation of these substances could help extend its freshness. The findings, in American Chemical Society’s Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, mean beer drinkers everywhere could enjoy their favourite brew for longer. From 2009, the Andalusian regional government, the Junta de Andalucía, has made inheritance tax exempt up to the first €175.000 when passed to direct family. Unfortunately for non-resident property owners, this exemption applies only to residents of Andalusia. Both the deceased and the inheritor must be residents. The same rule, in fact, applies to Spaniards. They must be resident in Andalusia, not in some other part of Spain. For a better understanding I will explain it with an example: If a non-resident leaves his holiday flat in Spain to his two children, also non-residents, the heirs must pay according to the basic national law. This means a miserable family exemption of 16.000 euros. If a flat was valued at 200.000 euros, each child inherits 100.000 euros. Each applies his exemption of 16.000 euros and faces tax on 84.000 euros. This tax amounts to about 10.000 euros of each inheritor. If the deceased lived as an official resident in Andalusia, had owned his principal residence here for three years, and left it to two children who were also residents, the exemption would be 99 per cent, meaning that the inheritors would pay no tax at all. THE SHORT WARNING IS: 1.- If you are non-resident in Spain your Spanish property will almost certainly be subject to Spanish inheritance tax. Plan for it now, and get your Residence Certificate. 2.- Make a Spanish will. Make this will the same day you buy a property in Spain. It will save your inheritors time, trouble and expense.

Ok, as I don’t know you, allow me to call you “The Lone Ranger” and since you are not going to like what I am going to say—please refer to me as “Tonto.” There, now I wish to impart two important secrets for learning to read Spanish.

Headlines of newspapers and the articles therein written are a good start. Just look up and learn what the headlines say. You’ll probably have to carry a small pocket dictionary with you, but then again, you should. You are at home, in your new kingdom and need to be able to speak with the subjects. Wow, will your vocabulary grow and your knowledge of what’s happening on the entire spectrum from agriculture to Zapatero. A French friend astounded me by learning to read and write within six months fluently enough to enable her to send letters and e mails to a host of different social grades of personages. I was astounded until I met her early one morning waiting at the bus stop reading a comic book. In fact she was studying the children’s illustrated version of Don Quixote with large colourful illustrations et al. Even in this simplistic classics the entire story is told and often the most famous quotes are given verbatim.

Of course, having a field of interest, from cooking to gardening is an incredible help. I became fascinated with the conquistadors, those valiant, god fearing, insensitive robbers that crawled through the jungles of far off Peru in search of gold in God’s name. Sometimes you can find a rare book or two written in both Spanish with an English translation alongside. I got one concerning Christopher Columbus’ first diary’s of his journey to the new world. In any case, once you read it, even if you have to look up a few words you’ll be provided with a rare insight into the proper psychology of the man that etched his inscription upon history and in which he has so regally painted and glorified—that he just might not be that deserving (whatever nationality you deem him to be).

A HAIRY TALE...............

Somebody asked me the other day, if I could sum up the 60’s and 70’s in one word, what would it be. There was no hesitation on my part, and although I had never thought this through in advance, I said ‘Hair!’. Look, when the 60’s thing kicked off, it was pretty much ‘The Beatles’ who started the ball rolling and it was those distinctive ‘mop tops’ that had everybody talking and my generation copying - the Scousers had set the standard! They were long-haired layabouts as far as our parents were concerned, but they changed their minds shortly after when the Stones appeared on the scene. If the Fab Four epitomised their belief that the whole country had gone to the dogs, then the sight of Michael Jagger and crew had them reaching for the whisky bottles and Valium. A whole succession of groups immediately followed, each trying to outdo the others in the fashion, performance and haircut departments. There was a group called The Pretty Things – which they most definitely were not – and the vocalist had hair that would have been the envy of a Crufts champion Afghan Hound. I remember being very put out by the whole hair thing. There was I with a blond, very curly barnet and there was no way – apart from growing it long – that I could emulate my cool pop star heroes with those distinctive fashionable heads, no matter how hard I tried. But my day would come. As a young boy, I had had to endure

the whole, “Ooh, hasn’t your Colin got lovely curly hair, it’s so wasted on a boy”, routine. It was all I could do to stop myself from being sick on their shoes, and once I recall, I actually was. Just to accentuate the whole thing, the rock musical HAIR hit the West End; hair was groovy, hair was where it was at man, hair was . . . well, hairy! Facial hair too, became the thing in the sixties and once again it was those four Liverpool lads that started the trend. When they went off and did their Maharishi/Peace & Love thing and released the Sergeant Pepper album; Zapata-style moustaches became de rigueur. We all had them, even some of the women. Come to think about it, most of the women in our neighbourhood! Towards the tale end of the decade via the fashion conscious Mod-era, Cat Stevens hit the scene, and here was the man I most wanted to be. The amazing talent, the full beard and, once again, the out of sight hair. I hated that goodlooking Greek! Then before we knew it, the multicoloured, full-on seventies were upon us. And if we thought that the 60’s could never be emulated or surpassed in terms

By Colin Bird of sheer flamboyance, the likes of Bowie, Roxy Music and Marc Bolan proved us wrong. We mimicked our idols with our platform shoes, psychedelic shirts and satin loons, and the still long, trademark hair do’s. Mott the Hoople sang about us – we were the Young Dudes! Today, even though my body takes five hour lunch breaks and I cannot remember where I put my underpants (oh, I’ve got them on!) and occasionally I hear the voices telling me to do strange things, I am pleased to report that my hair is intact and the envy of my contemporaries. Two of us recently located a follicallyimpaired buddy from my 70’s days through the magic of Facebook and he commented that he was delighted to have re-connected with us even though in his words, ‘You both spent the seventies looking like a yaks backside’. A compliment indeed!

I had to be at Torrecárdenas Hospital between 8 and 12, so 9.30 seemed a good compromise. Acting on knowledge already gained we parked Del safely elsewhere, and pushed our way on foot through the logjam that was the hospital car park. We adjusted our crampons and oxygen cylinders and ascended the 86 steps that lead to the Outpatients door. Here we were met by a wall of humanity, each one apparently conducting a conversation with a far distant friend without the benefit of a mobile phone. I took a deep breath, selected my sharper elbow and fought my way in. Proceeding with the inexorable determination of an Arctic icebreaker I forged my way into the Waiting Room. The Waiting Room was packed to capacity with people who all had the resigned look of the long distance queueer. A roomful of eyes watched as I went to the little machine in the corner and took the ticket that would denote my turn – number 290! I studied the digital display in the foyer telling anyone who was interested that number 97 was currently being seen. I didn’t need to be Einstein to work out that there was more than enough time for coffee, so I prised my way out and headed

towards the Cafeteria. However, you can only spin a coffee out for so long. I returned to the foyer, once again deploying my elbow to effect an entrance. Once inside I glanced at the display – 25. How can that be? I was pretty sure even in my befuddled state that 25 came before 97. I plunged into the heaving throng in the foyer, and selected someone who looked as if she knew what she was doing. Why is it that if ever you need to ask for information, you always pick on the one person in the whole building who speaks neither English nor Spanish? However, it worked! Most of the foyer abandoned their efforts to break the legal decibel level, and explained exactly how the system worked. With co-operation and much examination of papers and numbers we multi-laterally sorted ourselves into number order – we were queueing, just not in a straight line! But, I enquired, how can 97 be called before 25. Easy – 97 was 197, and 25 was 225. The crowd seemed unanimous on this point, so I nodded sagely and shut up. Having fought so hard for it, I wasn’t about to lose my place on a technicality! But I did feel sorry for the lady who came in after me, and took ticket number 345. Is it like this every day in Torrecárdenas?

Views From A Balcony In Spain

By Chris Marshall

Through The Eyes Of Others Marketing has dominated a lot of my discussions over the last couple of weeks, partly because of a new project I am looking at that involves an unique mix of radio, newspaper and Internet as I have been working on a business plan summary, and partly because a friend in the UK is involved in setting up a couple of new ventures and has asked for my input. Another reason is that I had an interesting meeting with

someone here in Almerimar that is looking to set up a multi-level marketing business here to promote a revolutionary vitamin and energy drink supplement. Not something I would be interested in, but a good opportunity for someone that knows the Spanish and Expat market and is prepared to work hard, very hard, on what is in effect and tried and tested marketing model. It was this aspect which

caught my attention more than anything and led to this column as the one over riding impression that I came away from the meeting with was the guy had a very clear and well articulated marketing method. He believed in it, new the benefits of the product (as opposed to just the features), and as importantly knew what it wasn’t ..... and why! It is an approach that I think Almerimar and elsewhere

along the Costa Almeria (Mojacar springs to mind) would do well to adopt! Over the last couple of weeks I have met up with a number of friends who own second properties here in Almerimar, residential tourists, and proud of it! Taking to them I was struck, or more accurately reminded, that they like Sands and I chose Almerimar as much, if not more, because of what it wasn’t than what it was! There is no polite way of saying this really but included

oh, by the way....

America has declared war! Well, nothing new in that! They have done that before, but this time they have declared war against a Spanish doll! A company from Alicante is trying to market their doll “Bebé Glotón” (Greedy Baby) in America, but the b******* won’t let them! The Americans’ arguments are that the doll could awaken the sexuality in 5-6 year old girls (the market the company is targeting), and the “risk” that small girls grow up too rapidly which is of special concern when sex and pregnancies among adolescents is a growing problem. Why the concern? The doll simulates breast-feeding! In a society of “drug, sex and rock-n-roll”, glazed over with a thin layer of puritanism, the resistance should not be a surprise. The Alicante company’s spokesman says that 100 years ago 90% of Americans would have roared with laughter over this controversy, as breast-feeding was a natural part of family life. Sure they would! But that would most likely be from the thought of spending a fortune on a silly doll for a girl that should be helping her mother in the kitchen and not wasting time playing. In those days, children did not have the time to play. It is a modern concept to allow children to be children and grow up slowly. Another part of the spokesman’s argument is that breast-feeding has become unnatural after pharmaceutical companies found gold in producing artificial mothers-milk. Sir, you should be the last one to talk about double-standards. Do you not earn money on exploiting little girls in order to sell your doll? It seems the politicians today are adamant to show us the naked truth. Where I come from, a politician dressed off to the skin, meant that he had run out of arguments in a political debate. Here it literally means a naked politician. The latest is a female candidate in Menorca, who has distributed a poster showing her naked breasts (you cannot see her head, so apparently she does not have anything there to offer the voters), fondled by a set of male hands, and with the title: “Two big reasons”. And no argument there! The trend started with Italian porno-star Ilona Staller – better known as Ciciolina, who in her campaign for parliament had a picture of herself with her breasts exposed. Well, she was a porno-star. In 2006 it was a male, Albert Rivera, who caught attention with his poster for the Catalan elections. He was stark naked, but modestly covered his private parts with his hands. The article, I read, tried to include Germany’s Angela Merkel in the statistics, by referring to a poster for a local elections candidate from Mrs Merkel’s party (an Angela Merkel look-alike), showing both ladies with generously low necklines, and the title: “We offer more”. Well, well – that more brought associations with Africa; everybody knows where it is, but nobody wants to go there. Zapatero is on his way out. A lot of people will probably add a “finally” to that statement. Zapatero himself has handed over most of the tasks to his vice-presidents, Rubalcaba and Salgrado. In my book a wise decision! However, he has not handed over diplomacy to a more knowledgeable member of his cabinet. So, he travels the World like another Clinton, Blair or Aznar, in the hope that the World will take notice and offer him a fat, easy retirement post. And the World has taken notice ……. of his “Mr Bean” like blunders. In a recent visit to China, he rushed out and told the World that the Chinese had promised an injection of billions of €uros to the Spanish building societies, something the Chinese subsequently flatly denied. He then followed up with the stupidest explanation to the “misunderstanding”, one that would make even a school child laugh. As my mother-in-law always said: Better to shut up and appear stupid, than to open your mouth and prove it! in those ‘benefits’ are: - it isn’t Benidorm - it isn’t full of All Inclusive Package tourists (something Mojacar is under threat of at the moment) - it isn’t ‘too English’ And it certainly isn’t Salou on the Costa Dorada which recently hosted Saloufest, the ‘biggest student festival in the world’ which has been running since 2002 and this year attracted 8.000 student over two, four day periods. Tempting as it may be to concentrate on the millions that go to places like Benidorm

each year, the reality is that many many millions more don’t, because it just ‘isn’t for them’. I suspect that many people the world over perceive Benidorm to be Spain, and as such don’t even consider Spain for the type of holiday they are looking for, which is a shame, but at the same time an opportunity for places like Almerimar and Mojacar. I am reminded of the TV programme from years ago: Not The Nine O’Clock News! Almerimar: Not Benidorm! I can see the poster campaign already.

can you tell the difference between a fine wine & plonk?

Spending more than £5 on a bottle of wine is a waste of time, researchers say. According to a study, most people cannot tell the difference between the cheapest supermarket plonk and quality wines that cost up to £30. In a series of blind tests, members of the public correctly identified whether they were drinking a cheap or expensive wine half the time – a success rate that is no better than chance. Psychologist Richard Wiseman, who carried out the study, questioned whether more expensive wines were good value for money. “These are remarkable results,” said Professor Wiseman, guest director of this year’s Edinburgh Science Festival. “People were unable to tell expensive from inexpensive wines and so in these times of financial hardship the message is clear – the inexpensive wines we tested taste the same as their expensive counterparts.” The researchers selected eight cheap wines for the experiment – four whites and four reds. With the exception of a bottle of champagne, all cost less than £5. They then matched each cheap wine with a more expensive bottle made from the same grape variety and produced in the same part of the world. The ‘quality’ wines ranged in price from £9.49 to £29.99. The researchers approached 578 people in Edinburgh and asked them to sample a glass of either a cheap or an expensive wine. The tasters were shown two prices and asked to say which wine they were drinking. They correctly classified the white wines as cheap or expensive 53% of the time, and the reds on 47% of occasions; overall they were right just 50% of the time. People struggled most when it came to differentiating between cheap and expensive

claret. Despite being given either a £3.49 bottle or a £15.99 quality red, just 39% chose the correct wine. They were most accurate when testing pinot grigio, with 59% able to recognise either a £4.29 or £9.49 bottle. “We didn’t ask people to compare two wines because we wanted to mimic real-life conditions,” said Professor Wiseman, of Hertfordshire University. “When you have a meal you don’t decide whether a wine is good or not by comparing it with other wines – you drink it.” Even self-professed wine lovers failed to identify the wines correctly! Guy Woodward, editor of wine magazine Decanter, said he was not surprised by the findings, adding that quality wines were an acquired taste. He said: “If you are used to spending £5 on a bottle of wine and if you enjoy it, then a wine that costs £20 will taste unusual and different. More expensive wines are often less obvious. They may not have the bold fruity flavours of cheaper wines – they will be more nuanced and they may not be as sweet. People may not appreciate the more complex flavours. All taste is subjective. I know that my own palate has changed since I became editor of Decanter.” He continued: “Part of the enjoyment of drinking expensive wines was the knowledge that they were expensive”.

Why turkey eggs are flying off supermarket shelves! For most of us, turkeys have but a single use in life: to fit into the oven and be dished up as an annual festive feast with cranberry sauce on the side...

But now, it seems the birds may find they have a more year-round value - their eggs are shortly being launched in Waitrose, after the supermarket chain announced a rising demand for such ‘speciality’ eggs, sparked by celebrity chefs such as Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver.

they’re bigger than hens’ eggs, you need two instead of three to make a really light sponge cake.’

From this week, the turkey eggs will be nestled among similar gourmet layings from quails and ducks, along with those from the humble chicken.

The eggs will be on sale in selected Waitrose stores until the end of August, when the laying season ends, and will cost £1.99 for a pack of two.

‘Turkey eggs are the most asked-for eggs among our customers,’ says Waitrose eggbuyer Frances Westerman.

And devotees say they’re not only richer than a hen’s egg, but equally delicious fried, poached or boiled. You may just find that you need a bigger egg cup.

‘They have excellent cooking qualities and, because

Turkey eggs have never been on sale before, largely because they lay less frequently than chickens, and because most of the birds are bred for eating at Christmas.

ALStrays Weekly Report

by Sandra Marshall (

I have written about the urgent need for more foster homes to take in abandoned cats, while I work to re-home them. Now kitten season is upon us again, we also urgently need places for litters of 2 month old babies! ALStrays is NOT an animal rescue. It is a re-homing process for cats. I work with a number of organisations and people across the Almeria region, who take in stray and abandoned cats, and help them to find permanent homes. This frees up places for more cats to be rescued, but they are always quickly filled, and more places are always needed. The process works, and to date, as a team, we have re-homed close to 300 cats. It does however take time, and the cats need safe places to live while all the vaccinations and tests are carried out. Money is always needed but money alone is not enough. I need more people who to foster for 1-2 months, so please do get in touch if you want to join the team and help to save some beautiful cats or kittens. You can read more about the work Sandra and her partners are doing on www.alstrays. com, and you can contact her by email: Thanks to Central Contracts ( for their continued support in the transportation of the re-homed cats. The next transport is scheduled for 29/04.

Police uncover priceless paintings missing since 1990s

Officers with the Guardia Civil have found two valuable paintings - “La Anunciación” by El Greco and “La Aparición de la Virgen del Pilar” by Francisco de Goya - in a house in Alicante, both of which have been missing since the end of the 1990s. The two works of art, considered part of Spain’s art heritage, had been included in numerous international exhibitions and were reported missing by their owners after their return to Spain in the late 1990s. As a result of the police report lodged after their disappearance, the Guardia Civil’s special Historical Heritage squad uploaded photos of the missing paintings to an international database of stolen artwork, to alert police forces around the world to their disappearance and to make it hard for the thieves to sell them. Last October, investigators received information about a possible sale of the two paintings and the investigation was intensified, leading to the discovery of both paintings at a private address in the province of Alicante.

200kg of cocaine found in Costa Rican pineapples

Officers from the National Police force have confiscated over 200kg of cocaine that was hidden in a shipment of tropical pineapples imported from Costa Rica. The police operation culminated in the arrest of 12 people involved in transporting the drugs from the port of Valencia to Talavera de la Reina (Toledo). Using officers on the ground and in the air, the National Police managed to follow the shipment and arrrest 12 members of drugs trafficking ring based in the provinces of Valencia and Alicante, with one arrest made in either province, six in Toledo and four in Madrid. Apart from the 204kg of cocaine, that was had been vacuum packed in plastic, police also confiscated five cars (including a ‘decoy’ truck loaded only with pineapples), documentation & over 100,000€ in cash.

Further Drops In The US Dollar Market Commentary 15th April 2011 The USD index is struggling to maintain above its November 2009 low around 74.17, with little sign of a change in fortune. A shock rise in weekly jobless claims to 412k (380k expected) did nothing to aid the US Dollar’s efforts as higher commodity prices, and in particular energy prices played negatively. Undoubtedly, many USD pairs have entertained an increase in sensitivity to oil price movements over recent weeks, with the USD falling on the wrong side when oil prices move higher. The commodity currencies e.g. Canadian Dollar and Norwegian Kroner are the key beneficiaries but EUR/USD is also strongly linked with the price of oil. Various Fed comments this week including supportive comments on the USD’s role as a reserve currency have had little effect to boost the view on the dollar despite the generally hawkish slant. US data releases will keep markets busy. The data is unlikely to bring any severe shocks however given the growing FX interest on Fed policy; CPI data may have more weight than usual. The expectation of a trend like 0.2% increase in core CPI, which is unlikely to cause any concern within the Fed, suggests that the USD will acquire little support. The capability of the single European currency to survive a flood of dire news from the eurozone periphery is remarkable. Above

all, peripheral bond yields carry on rising especially Greek yields as expectations of debt restructuring develop. Remarks from Germany’s finance minister have added to such expectations. Reports that the Bank of Spain accepted the recapitalisation of 13 banks and that Spanish banks lent only EURO 44 billion last month, the lowest since Jan 2008, may have provided some relief. On the other hand, given that markets are already relative hawkish about eurozone interest rates and given growing peripheral worries as well as overly long EURO market positioning, the upside for EUR/USD is looking increasingly restrained, with a break above technical support around 1.4580 likely to be difficult to achieve over the short-term. The possible restructuring of Greek debt was finally acknowledged by Germany on Wednesday. The European Central Bank report, due in June, will almost certainly show Greek debt on an unsustainable path. Protection of Greek debt hit record highs on Thursday, as did yields on Portuguese 10 year bonds but the Euro has not budged one iota. The contents of this report are for information purposes only. I recently received an email from a very old friend explaining she’d become disillusioned with the Christian faith, which, in her words “simply doesn’t do what it says on the tin.” I suspect that to some extent she was expecting to shock me and waiting for a reaction, but the trouble is that in many respects I sympathise with her comments. I’m more than conscious of the fact that we Christians are such a bad advert for the faith Christ taught and practiced that most of us are enough to put anyone off. So, in reply I enquired which “Tin” she was looking at and just how old, rotten, corrupt and past their sell-by date were the contents she was comparing with that label? For, as I pointed out, any ‘label’ drafted by any Church or other human organisation cannot accurately portray the immensity of our faith. Indeed the only label worth reading is that written by the teaching of Jesus himself, and the only contents capable of comparison, are his life. All other human beings are necessarily flawed and represent his ideal very badly, so can’t do what it says on his “tin”. But of course that very fact is written on the “tin” itself, as St Paul so frequently acknowledged his own failures, and pointed out that the best any of us can achieve is still well below Christ’s standard. So sadly, we should never expect in this life to see a Christianity that truly matches the “label”. But as we look at the life of Jesus, then and only then we can really see what this faith is all about and how poorly most of us match his ideals. For he truly loved and lived for others rather than himself. And as we’re particularly reminded at this Easter period, he died for others too, himself accepting the inevitable penalty on our behalf, for the wrong we’ve done, with no complaint as to the injustice of it all. Almost 3,400 drivers in a week caught using mobile ‘phones

The Guardia Civil have fined almost 3,400 drivers for using their mobile ‘phones manually whilst driving during the seven-day special campaign run by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) to focus on avoiding distractions at the wheel. During the campaign, which began on April 4th and ended on April 10th, 399,237 vehicles were monitored on the roads across Spain (except Catalonia and the Basque Country). Over the course of the seven days 4,201 fines were issued to drivers who were distracted at the wheel, 3,387 of them (85%) for talking on the mobile ‘phone whilst driving. According to a number of different studies, using mobile ‘phones whilst driving multiplies the risk of having an accident by four which makes it similar to the risks of driving whilst over the drink-drive limit. As well as controlling the “improper use” of mobile ‘phones, police officers also monitored the use of GPS systems by drivers, which is considered a similar distraction to talking on the ‘phone: 38

drivers were fined for programming their GPS systems whilst driving. A further 169 people were fined for using headphones or earphones connected to appliances other than telephones. Police officers have reported that 24% of divers stopped during the campaign were using “hands free” devices, which is allowed, but which is still considered to present a risk in terms of diminishing the ability to concentrate whilst driving. “Drivers on the ‘phone don’t keep their speed constant, their reaction time is greater and they tend not to keep a safe distance from the car in front”, said the Traffic Dept., underlining that distractions at the wheel are one of the main causes of accidents in Spain and one which can be easily avoided. So far this year (up to and including April 14th) 168 people have been killed in 329 fatal accidents on Spanish roads and in 158 of those accidents, i.e. 48%, driver distraction was an important factor.

15th April - We had 26 players taking part this week. Again this was a reduction in numbers as quite a few of the winter golfers are now migrating north for the spring and summer. This week we played an X x Y + Z stableford competition. It was teams of four with two stableford scores multiplied together on each hole and a 3rd one added. The winners were Sune Jönsson, Fernando Halbart,

Jan Ljung (who had chocolates last week) and Isabel Haworth with a fantastic team score of 147 points. Last place and chocolates went to the team of John Woodhead, Nick Quine, John Fielding and Cynthia Witham with a score of 99. Nearest the pin was on hole 17 and it was won by Marianne Liljedahl with a distance of 2.52m beating her husband Sune who was the only other name on the board. Congratulations to Mimmo

THE GRUMPY OLD MEN OF LOS GALLARDOS.... Greetings from God’s little waiting room where, this week we celebrated the 70th birthday of none other than Looselips. It was a cracking do, held at a hostelry in the village, I think it’s called Naranjo. We were entertained by the talented J.C., who always gives of his best. Our thanks to our host, Ali and Mick for looking after us so well, and to the cook, who at this present time is nameless, for an excellent buffet. The place was packed with friends of the old fella, who had come to wish him well, he received loads of pressies, the most novel of

which had to be a huge Tbone steak from Scary Mary, what else do you get for a man who has it all. Frodo has gone back to “middle earth” for a year (Australia), and has threatened to send me jottings from time to time, can’t wait to see his first lot of ramblings. Enjoy yourselves, both. You have probably heard this tale before, but it’s worth repeating. Some friends of mine were driving back to the U.K., and stopped for petrol, in northern Spain. On leaving the forecourt he discovered his tire was flat, so pulled over to

change the wheel. Some very helpful Spaniards offered to help, they changed the wheel, and his faith in human nature, robbing him of credit cards mobile phone etc. I know it’s happened before, and will no doubt happen again, but if your driving back please be aware at all times. Great excitement mid-week when a police helicopter hovered over our little enclave, it was funny that there was very little movement on the ground, while it was in position!!! Apparently it was a drugs bust, on the motorway, and they had legged it from the van and headed for “Tenco”. Microwave Mike was over the moon as his washing dried in no time at all!!!. Aunty Mo is still suffering from her bruised ribs, as any self respecting person knows bruising to the ribs can be more painful and take longer to heal than a fracture. Hope you feel better soon Mo. That’s all for this week. Until the next time. Tight lines, Uncle Albert

Forum Golf Society´s latest outing, an individual stableford competition took place at Valle del Este on April 15th, and a course in very good condition made exremely tough by a combination of strong gusty breezes and tee positions that were close to those normally used for Championship events saw an average score of less than 24 points. Best of the day was Phil Elam

with 37 points, ahead of Richard Swaine (34) in second place, and Derek Manning (3rd) & Adrian Lawrence (4th) one point less & seperated by countback after both scoring very creditable 33´s. John Farley (31 points) was the only other person player to break 30 points to finish 5th, with John Bridgen claiming the longest drive honours on the seventh hole. There were also three nearest the pin prizes,

with these going to Richard Swaine, John Smith & Adrian Lawrence. The fixture that has sparked a great deal of interest in the local golfing community, the stableford competition sponsored & subsidised by PLAS - TECH at Aguilon on May 5th is drawing closer, and at a cost of just €14 (€19 with buggy), and including prizes worth in excess of €2000 plus free beer and barbecue afterwards it´s not

ended up in hospital. He is now recovering I am pleased to say. John Walker is leaving the committee at the end of June as he is moving to another part of Spain. Join me in thanking him for his efforts in

putting on competitions and his committee work. Always a smile and something to say, I for one won’t miss his garish shirts on the oche. This leaves a vacancy on the committee could captains please submit
