The Interior Minister, Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, said “it’s either bombs or elections” when he announcing the planned new legislation at a news conference last Friday. Under the measures, he stated that authorities will have 44 days following the calling of an election to seek a ban on any separatist party that has not condemned ETA violence, Previously, the period was 48 hours, which did not allow judicial authorities enough time to provide evidence to ban a party. The government also hopes to force elected legislators from banned parties to resign their posts unless they clearly denounce ETA violence.

“Let’s be clear... anyone can present themselves (at an election) in the Basque Country while defending independence for the Basque Country. What is not possible is to do it with arms,” said Rubalcaba.

whether to continue the armed campaign.

“There are only two options, either they distance themselves from ETA, or they convince it to give up its weapons, unilaterally and definitively.”

ETA’s political wing, Batasuna, has been banned in Spain since 2003 because of its links with ETA. Spanish authorities have also outlawed other groups they considered fronts for Batasuna.

ETA, banned as a terrorist group by the European Union and the United States, is blamed for 829 deaths in its 41-year campaign for independence for the Basque region of northern Spain and southwestern France. Radical Basque separatists are reportedly divided over

But they remain determined to take part in Basque municipal elections in 2011 so as not to disappear completely from political landscape.

The Socialist government in Madrid has taken a hard line on the extremist Basque independence movement since ETA formally ended a 15-month-old ceasefire in June 2007, arresting dozens of ETA and Batasuna activists.

Spanish MEPs Join Criticism Of Holiday Home Law

Spanish MEPs have joined counterparts in criticising the treatment of expats who face having homes in Spain bulldozed under coastal protection law.

El Ejido 20 women have taken up the new cooking courses offered by the Ayuntamento of El Ejido. This is the second, more advanced, stage course which builds on the knowledge the 20 women learned in the previous stage. The participants come from all ages, backgrounds and the course teaches how to cook to an high standard but also hopes to build relationships without boundaries.

Rules introduced in 1988 left coastal properties liable to demolition and thousands of British and other European owners stripped of property rights. MEPs say homeowners have been given no legal redress or compensation. They have asked for the law to be clarified. Spain insists owners of legally built homes are being “fairly compensated”. The law was designed to protect the coast and set limits on building, allowing municipal leisure developments but not private homes. Since its introduction, thousands of people who live or have holiday homes in Spain have discovered that properties bought legitimately through the Spanish legal system had, in fact, been built in breach of the regulations. Meanwhile, in Andalucia, regional authorities have applied the law

retrospectively to declare legitimately built properties illegal.

called for EU funding for Spain to be withheld until the issue was addressed.

Since the law came into force, courts have rejected 96% of owners’ appeals against expropriation, the European Parliament’s petitions committee was told.

Another British MEP, Roger Helmer, said afterwards that he had received dozens of complaints from people in his East Midlands constituency.

“The Spanish government must recognise that those affected must be fully compensated,” said Spanish centre-right MEP Gabriel Mato. “We are talking about people who have lived in their homes for many years and who lost their property rights without an explanation.” Despite this, the committee heard that “unfair demarcation” had left owners of some large hotels and private developments “untouched”. Mr Mato’s colleague Carlos Iturgáiz asked: “How can the demarcation line be applied in a zigzag.” British MEP Michael Cashman told the committee thousands of Britons with property in regions like Andalucia, Valencia and Murcia were affected. Mr Cashman claimed that dubious application of the law had “taken away confidence in Spain generally” and

International Rights Groups Back Spanish Judge More than 200 human rights groups and jurists from around the world have signed a letter supporting Spain’s crusading judge Baltasar Garzon, who is threatened with suspension. Among the signatories are the former UN chief war crimes prosecutor Carla Del Ponte and the United Nations cultural body UNESCO. A total of 59 human rights groups and more than 150 lawyers, judges and academics expressed “astonishment” at the accusations against Garzon, according to a copy of the letter seen by AFP Wednesday. Garzon is the subject of a writ filed by a far-right group, Manos Limpias (Clean Hands), which accuses him of an abuse of power by opening an investigation into the tens of thousands

of people who went missing during the 1936-39 civil war and the subsequent military dictatorship of Francisco Franco. The complaint said Garzon’s case ignored a 1977 amnesty covering political crimes. The UN Human Rights Committee in 2008 called on Spanish authorities to throw out the amnesty law, the signatories to the letter supporting Garzon noted. The letter, sent to Spanish judicial a u t h o r i t i e s , said the “forced disappearances” which Garzon was investigating are crimes “which cannot

be prescribed amnestied”.

Garzon is also the subject of an investigation into payments he received for speaking at conferences in the United States sponsored by Spanish bank Santander. The 54-year-old judge, who was thrust into the international limelight in 1998 with his attempt to have former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet extradited, is known for his investigations into drug traffickers, extremists and political corruption. He has denied any wrongdoing.

“Some have seen their dreams, their homes, and their life savings literally reduced to rubble before their eyes,” he said. More than 15,000 people have petitioned the committee about the issue. Spain’s general director for coast and sea sustainability, Alicia Paz Antolín, said owners who lost rights to legally built properties were being “fairly compensated”. This took the form of being given the right to stay in the property for up to 60 years, she said. The committee is to write to the Spanish government asking for further clarifications on the application of the law and to the European Commission with a request to clarify the legal basis of the cases.

Nicole Kidman Praises Spain For Leading Fight Against Domestic Violence

The actress & UNIFEM Goodwill Ambassador sent an audiovisual message to be broadcast in the 5th ‘Women for a Better World’ conference, that both domestically and internationally, Spain is “leading”,the fight against domestic violence. Kidman thanked the Spanish Government for inviting her to the conference, to be held in Valencia on 27th and 28th March, which she is unable to attend, but conveyed “a message of encouragement” as Ambassador for UNIFEM (United Nations Development Fund for Women) and said she was “proud” to offer her cooperation at any time, anywhere. She stressed that the meeting in Valencia is “an ideal opportunity”,

bringing together world leaders to address the question of inequality and “to work together to eradicate it “, and was confident that this would ultimately be achieved. The Australian actress stressed that inequality is what denies many women their basic human rights, for example making it impossible for girls to attend school or continue their studies. For Kidman this problem “breeds violence” against girls and then women, pointing out that six out of

ten will suffer domestic violence at some time in their lives. In her message, Kidman said that she was confident that one day “our children will have equal opportunities and be judged by their character, hired for their talent, valued for their skills and welcome everywhere.” Finally, Nicole Kidman urged governments to “tear down the barriers that constrain girls and women.”

Scientists Describe Last Winter EU Working On ‘European Solution’ For Greece As “Abnormal” This winter has been the most extreme since 1900 according to research just published by a group of scientists from the Spanish Council of Scientific Investigation (CSIC)

Geographer Santiago Beguería, CSIC specialist in climatology and statistical modelling, emphasized that this last winter was “an unusual winter”. In a statement to the press today, the scientist stated that the anomalies experienced over the past few months are mainly due to the persistence of atmospheric instability linked to the crossing of polar front Atlantic storms. Scientists have analyzed the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which determines the climate in many European regions, including Spain, in the same way that the phenomenon of “El Niño” determines the weather for several months around the South Pacific. The NAO explains the regional climate variability between the months of November and April, and scientists define it as the difference in surface air pressure that occurs between the depression of Iceland and the Azores High, producing “cyclogenesis”.

Santiago Beguería, assigned to the CSIC Experimental Station “Aula Dei” in Zaragoza, has studied the last winter with two other geographers, Vicente Serrano and Juan Ignacio Lopez Moreno, CSIC scientists assigned to the Pyrenean Institute of Ecology. The scientists have reviewed the successive snowstorms and wind along the Cantabrian coast, the flooding in Andalucia and the landslides that have occurred, and conclude that during a “normal” winter the storms are interspersed with long bouts of atmospheric stability. The average number of days with anticyclonic conditions during the winter is 40 percent, but this winter that percentage dropped to 25 percent. Temperatures have also been abnormal throughout the winter with slightly higher lows and lower highs, which fits in with the uninterrupted passage of storms that give an overcast sky and a lower thermal

oscillation. Moreover, most of the more recent storms have had a more southerly course than usual, and have affected the southern half of the peninsula more than usual. In general, the winter rainfall has been well above average in most of the country, with water levels reaching record highs in southern Spain (Almería, Cádiz, Córdoba, Granada, Jaén, Málaga and Seville), in the Mediterranean (Palma de Mallorca) and inland (Zamora, Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Toledo and Badajoz). However, the exception has been the Cantabrian coast (Asturias, Cantabria, Basque Country, Burgos and Navarra) and Gerona, places where rainfall has actually been lower than normal this winter. Scientists themselves have wondered whether these changes are attributable to climate change, and conclude: “We cannot attribute one isolated extreme event to global warming.”

The Spanish EU presidency is seeking a “European solution” to help debt-laden Greece, a spokesman for Spanish Prime Minister Luis Rodriguez Zapatero said ahead of a European Union summit Thursday. “We are working on a European solution for Greece,” Zapatero was quoted as saying as he arrived in Brussels for the start of the two-day EU summit later in the day. European leaders hope to seal a deal to help Greece out of its deficit crisis, with possible intervention by the International Monetary

Fund (IMF) on the cards.

Greece’s 15 fellow eurozone nations, including Spain which holds the EU’s rotating presidency, have been seeking for weeks to agree how to help Athens deal with an unprecedented deficit crisis which is seen as threatening cohesion across the eurozone. Greece has already taken a string of austerity measures, prompting strikes at home, but appears unable to do all the heavy lifting alone. However, there remain serious differences in approach among the eurozone partners.

EU powerhouse Germany, confronted by public opposition to covering Greece’s unpaid bills, has long shied away from offering support, preferring the IMF option if necessary. Many other eurozone nations, led by France, have championed a purely European solution, fearing that recourse to the IMF would cast a long shadow over the euro. Days of frantic diplomatic efforts appear to have narrowed the gap but with no side yet saying a deal is in sight.

UK retail sales rose strongly between January and February, official figures show, following a sharp fall a month earlier.

Shadow chancellor George Osborne has attacked Labour’s “empty” Budget and lack of “vision” as the election battle lines are drawn up around the economy. emphasis on spending cuts than tax rises. “I am going to try and get rid of this enormous debt by getting rid of wasteful government spending, not taxing hard-working people,” he said.

Sport Mr Osborne told the BBC: “Where is the leadership to get this economy moving?” But Chancellor Alistair Darling said Labour’s policies were “bearing fruit” and said Tory spending cut plans “risk tipping” the UK back into recession. The Liberal Democrats say Labour and the Tories are both “in denial” about the scale of spending cuts needed. Mr Osborne said the Conservatives would set out further details of how they would cut Britain’s deficit at a faster rate than Labour before the general election, adding that they would place more

The comments came as Mr Darling, Mr Osborne and Lib Dem treasury spokesman Vince Cable toured television and radio stations to give their verdicts on last Wednesday’s Budget. In his Budget speech, Mr Darling said Labour had been “right about the recovery” and urged voters not to put it at risk by deserting the party.

negative so “in theory these allowances should have been cut... now that would have been daft... so I froze them”. If the Conservatives win power at the election they have said they would introduce an “emergency” Budget within 50 days, which would overturn many of Mr Darling’s policies. But asked if the Tories would reverse the freeze on personal allowances, Mr Osborne said: “I wouldn’t be able to because it is going to happen before the general election.” He said the Labour measure he was “working hardest to avoid” was a 0.5% increase in National Insurance announced in the pre-Budget report, which is due to come into effect next year.

But Mr Osborne claimed 30 million workers were facing an effective tax BUDGET 2010: AT-A-GLANCE rise due to the freeze on personal allowances. The figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed a 2.1% rise in retail sales volumes.

In January, volumes fell by 3% - a sharp revision down from the 1.8% fall initially reported. Economists said the rise in sales was expected, following suppressed sales in January due to the poor weather. “Sales in January had been hurt very badly by the weather and the reintroduction of VAT,” said Sarah

Hewin, senior economist at Standard Chartered, speaking to the BBC. “We have to be cautious about saying that consumption is on an upward trend, however. Overall spending is still relatively weak.” Compared with last February, sales were up 3.5% - much lower than forecast by most analysts. In terms of value, sales for February were up 1.9% compared with January, or 5% up on a year ago.

Sahil Kidnap ‘Mastermind’ Arrested The “mastermind” behind the kidnapping of British boy Sahil Saeed has been arrested, according to police in Pakistan One other person was arrested in the operation in the city of Jhelum, the city where the boy was kidnapped. AK-47s, hand grenades and 700 bullets, as well as items belonging to Sahil’s family, were found during the arrests, officials said. Police later paraded the hooded and shackled suspects in front of local media. Sahil, from Oldham, was on holiday with his father when he was abducted on March 4. The five-year-old was found by locals wandering in a field nearly two weeks later,

alone but well, and handed over to police. He was only released after his family paid a £110,000 ransom, most of which was recovered in a dramatic series of raids which resulted in five arrests in France and Spain. Police in Jhelum said they had arrested two Pakistani men and were searching for two others who allegedly staged the initial kidnapping and robbery. The gang was also wanted for up to 22 murder and robbery cases, said officials. “We have arrested two members of this

international gang,” Aslam Tarin, regional police chief, said. “We had no prior planning to kidnap this boy,” one of the suspects was heard saying beneath his hood.

Brit Conquers Space With Helium Balloon A space enthusiast has taken spectacular images of the Earth’s surface from space - using a standard digital camera taped to a helium balloon.

plas-tech Robert Harrison used his ingenuity and a collection of cheap parts worth just £500 to take the spectacular shots using a Canon camera which he launched 35km above the planet’s surface. The 38-year-old father-ofthree has launched 12 High Altitude Balloons since his hobby started in October 2008. It all started when Mr Harrison, of Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, tried to take aerial photos of his house using a remote control helicopter, which turned out to be a non-starter. But he refused to give up and researched on the internet the idea of using a meteorological balloon like the ones used by weather centres. Mr Harrison, a married IT director, launched his first balloon, named Icarus I,

software on the ground and wrapped both the camera and the GPS device in loft insulation from a local DIY store - the whole thing weighs just 1kg.

“NASA had heard what was happening and wanted to know how I’d done it so cheaply,” he said. “People think this is something that costs millions but it doesn’t. You just need a bit of technical know-how. I know nothing about electronics and what I do know, I learned from the internet.”

The heat produced from these devices, together with the insulation, which costs £3 a sheet helps keep the contraption functioning.

To control the balloon, he used a standard GPS tracking device, similar to an average in-car Sat-Nav, and linked it to a radio transmitter, which allowed him to monitor the balloon’s height to within 10m and make it easy to find once it returns to earth. He linked his simple digital camera to computer

The balloon rises through the atmosphere and the higher it goes, the more the air pressure increases, causing the balloon to expand, until it parachutes back down to earth. Mr Harrison has spent £4,000 in total on sending his low-tech balloons into space. Luckily he has got each one back - although he sometimes has to travel up to 50 miles to retrieve his equipment and he can only send it off when weather conditions are just right.

Since the gradual introduction of multi-culturalism, the religious definition has declined over the last few years and we are expected to abide with new laws and to celebrate in such a manner as not to offend other faiths. Schools have to go along with new guidelines, pointing out that all beliefs be given equal time and recognition.

It might be true to say that, well before the new arrivals, faith was already on the decline and churches all over the country had been converted to bingo halls, indoor markets, living space and even public houses, and possessions, pop idols, football and cars have become most people’s top priorities. It has been said that all the great religions are equal in the sight of God and must follow the same precepts – self discipline, love of neighbour, charity and prayer. We are all climbing the same mountain into the unknown, holding on to different beliefs with each sect proclaiming the true path.

return for unbending loyalty and regular contributions. On the other side of the coin there are thousands of men and women who live all their lives in poverty in the most desolate places on the planet helping the poorest of the poor. Most people have come face to face, following a knocking on the door, with well-dressed gentlemen, usually white and most polite, loaded down with literature, insisting that they alone have the answer to the world’s problems and survival after death. So you can understand why the ordinary person becomes confused and rather disillusioned, especially when they read of wars and atrocities committed in the name of religion. So what must we do to find the right path? Well the truth is that long before we were born, Easter, Whitsun and Christmas were celebrated all over the world and will be after we are gone. Let each one of us approach Easter in our own way, holding

by Jack Brennan Easter speaks of rebirth and within that miracle we are special and not just an accident of evolution or a speck of dust, expendable and destined to be eventually whirled into oblivion. As for myself I shall give up sweets and chocolate for the six weeks of Lent, a practice continued for over seventy-seven years; then during Easter week I shall attend all the services of celebration and say a little prayer for all my friends, family and Sol Times readers that every one will enjoy a ‘Happy Easter’.

Easter is one of the most special public holidays of the year. Of course there is a special significance for Christians but there is also something in the air for everyone. As we turn the clocks forward and the mornings and evenings grow lighter and as the last of the winter rains disappear, there is a great feeling of a new beginning. The first trees are in blossom and the others have green buds. Our plants in the gardens are beginning to show more colour and signs of life. This is the time of year to look back at those New Year (re-)solutions, to review progress and to take any corrective action needed. The seasons can affect our feelings and attitudes. The chances are that you made those January resolutions in the midst of a cold, grey and wet winter; that probably made your emotions and optimism pretty cold, grey and wet too. But, when the natural world is bursting with the promise of a glorious spring and the warmth that it brings, this is an ideal time to decide that you too will start over and put right anything that you feel needs correction in your own life. Unless humans interfere with nature, it has its own graceful balance. The old and used makes way for the new and vibrant. Anyone can do the same with their own thoughts and attitudes. Perhaps those fondly held beliefs that served you well in the past are due for an overhaul. Perhaps it is time to restore your own natural balance. Balance means harmony rather than discord. This should include a brief but thorough examination of all the areas of your life – relationships, career, health, finances, leisure and talents. For example, you may well be a success by most material measures – large house, ample income, luxury car etc but you are unhappy. You can spend so much energy building your success that you have no time left for all those other aspects of your life. Once you work on restoring the balance, within a short period of time you will find happiness without putting any of the material gains at risk. You would have to be a very cold individual indeed to totally ignore the promise of Easter. So take some of that promise for yourself and then make sure that it is a promise that is delivered. You deserve nothing less.

Holy Week, Semana Santa, in Andalucia is an event that literally transforms towns and cities across this region. Processions of elaborately decorated floats with Jesus and Mary statues, groups of pointy-hood wearing Nazarenos (penitents), and shrill brass bands, walk slowly through the streets, from their parish church to the cathedral and back. It is an amazing experience, and a great time to come to Andalucia if you want to imbibe some deeply-held traditions that have less to do with religion than with social groupings and rituals. Many people avoid this time of year to visit Andalucia, but if you come prepared, both for the crowds and the inflated prices, then it is well worth the effort. You will never see anything like it again. If you want major pageantry and rich, bejewelled Virgins, Malaga or Seville are the cities to head for. Seville has 60 brotherhoods, some with as many as 2000 members. The biggest stars of the show are the Virgins of Macarena and Triana, both of which make their grand appearance at ‘La Madrugada’ , the small hours of Good Friday. From Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday traffic is closed off in city centres and the solemn processions take over in the afternoons (so be sure to do your shopping in the morning).

The aroma of burning candles, the passionate strains of a late night saeta and the mournful trumpets that accompany images of Christ and the Virgin Mary create an other-wordly ambience that can transport even the most casual observer to another time and place. But you don’t have to be in a big city to get the Semana Santa vibe - villages and towns of every size have their own celebrations, and each province offers its own variation on the Holy Week theme, with many festivities declared to be of National Interest for Tourists. Much of the time we behave like streamlined steam engines, gliding with graceful magnificence along our own personal set of railway tracks. We start our day in the morning, slowly leaving the station of the new day with a certain amount of huffing and puffing, gradually building steam as we embark on the day’s journey. We then progress majestically through the everyday humdrum of household chores, treating them with no more regard than if they were sets of well-greased points.

Nothing is where it was, and we meander aimlessly about, seeking comfort in the company of other similarly lost souls, bleating enquiries to each other about the whereabouts of tea and soap powder, milling together in small herds, hoping against hope that one of our number will have programmed the grid reference for breakfast cereal into their GPS. Without ceremony we have been de-railed. We mill, we vacillate, we wander vacantly. We

research claims Seaweed fights obesity

Seaweed could hold the answer to tackling obesity, according to Newcastle University researchers. The team found alginate - a fibre found in sea kelp - reduces the body’s fat uptake by more than 75%. That is better than most anti-obesity treatments. Now the fibre is being added to bread in an effort to develop foods that help lose weight. Clinical trials are now intended to find out how effective it would be in a normal diet. Dr Iain Brownlee, who coled the Tyneside team, said: “This research suggests that if we can add the natural fibre to products commonly eaten daily, such as bread, biscuits and yoghurts, up to three quarters of the fat contained in that meal could simply pass through the body. We have already added the alginate to bread and initial taste tests have been extremely encouraging.” The scientists used an

Understanding the Cost of Dental Treatment “artificial gut” to test the effectiveness of 60 different natural fibres by measuring the extent to which they affected the digestion of fat. The findings have been presented at the American Chemical Society’s spring meeting in San Francisco. “There are countless claims about miracle cures for weight loss but only a few cases offer any sound scientific evidence to back up these claims,” said Dr Brownlee. “Obesity is an ever-growing problem and many people find it difficult to stick to diet and

exercise plans in order to lose weight. These initial findings suggest alginates could offer a very real solution in the battle against obesity,” Alginates are already used in small amounts in food as thickeners and stabilisers. Dr David Haslam, chair of the National Obesity Forum, said: “Some products are sold as medical devices at vast expense which simply don’t work. This looks interesting, but we could only start recommending it if the scientists were able to provide good evidence based on rigorous trials.”

New drug hope in fight against TB

A compound which could form the basis of a new drug to treat tuberculosis (TB) has been discovered by a team led by the University of Strathclyde. Researchers developed the compound from an antibiotic, which they hope could become an effective treatment for TB. The compound will undergo further tests before it can be developed into a drug which can be tested on humans. TB kills about two million people each year and some strains are now resistant to drugs currently used. The research represents the first time a new class of anti-TB agent has been discovered solely by a UK-based academic collaboration. It is also the first major breakthrough for Tuberculosis Drug Discovery UK (TBD-UK), a nationwide consortium of scientists specialising in the development of new medicines to treat TB.

The group includes Strathclyde University, together with partners at University College London and the University of Birmingham. The newly-published research was led by Dr Geoff Coxon, of the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. He said: “TB is a very complex disease. It’s not only deadly in itself but is closely linked with HIV/AIDS. It’s also very difficult to detect and treat. Globally, more than eight million people develop active TB every year and if trends continue, there will be a total of 36 million TB-related deaths by 2020 - yet the drugs used to treat the disease were developed in the 1950s.” He continued: “All of this highlights the urgent need for new, more effective drugs to treat it. Our research has found a promising scaffold for a new class of drugs to deal with this severe health problem.”

Hypnotherapy ‘can help’ ibs

Greater use of hypnotherapy to ease the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome would help sufferers and might save money, says a gastroenterologist. Dr Roland Valori, editor of Frontline Gastroenterology, said of the first 100 of his patients treated, symptoms improved significantly for nine in 10. He said that although previous research has shown hypnotherapy is effective for IBS sufferers, it is not widely used. This may be because doctors simply do not believe it works. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gut problem which can cause abdominal pain, bloating, and sometimes diarrhoea or constipation. Dr Valori, of Gloucestershire Royal Hospital, said the research evidence which shows that hypnotherapy could help sufferers of IBS was first published in the 1980s. He thinks it has been widely ignored because many doctors find it hard to believe that it does work, or to comprehend how it could work. He began referring IBS patients for hypnotherapy in the early 1990s and has found it to be highly effective. He audited the first 100 cases he referred for hypnotherapy and found that the symptoms stopped completely in four in ten cases with typical IBS. He says in a further five in 10 cases patients

reported feeling more in control of their symptoms and were therefore much less troubled by them. “It is pretty clear to me that it has an amazing effect,” he said. “It seems to work particularly well on younger female patients with typical symptoms, and those who have only had IBS for a relatively short time.” He believes that it could work partly by helping to relax patients: “Of the relaxation therapies available, hypnotherapy is the most powerful.” He also says that IBS patients often face difficult situations in their lives, and hypnotherapy can help them respond to these stresses in a less harmful way. NHS guidelines allow doctors to refer IBS patients for hypnotherapy or other psychological therapies if medication is unsuccessful and the problem persists. Dr Valori thinks that if hypnotherapy were used more widely it could possibly save the NHS money while improving patient care. Dr Charlie Murray, Secretary of the British Gastroenterology Society, said: “There is no doubt that hypnotherapy is helpful for some patients, but it depends on the skill and experience of those practising it. “But the degree to which it is effective is not well defined. I would support using it as one therapy, but it is no panacea.”

There are certain professions which come to mind when we hear the adjective “costly”. Plumbers, solicitors, notaries, cardiologists, dentists…to name a few. After twenty years in the sector, I can detail the cost of dental treatment in a surgery like Centro Dental Vivadent, which caters to a clientele which requests and deserves the highest standard of dentistry. Private dentistry (which englobes the majority of surgeries in Spain) requires an important and continual investment in technology and in qualified personnel in order to remain up-to-date. Vivadent in Vera was constructed specifically to offer virtually any dental treatment inhouse. Aside from orthopanoramic and digital x-rays, Vivadent has fully equipped chairs, each one for a specific specialty (dental hygiene and whitening treatments, Orthodontics, periodontal/implant surgery, diagnosis, and general dentistry). Every chair has a “laughing gas” installation, for those patients who are especially nervous or phobic. The gas is completely innocuous and also recommended for patients with diabetes, hypertension, heart condition or special needs. All equipment, including the sterilisation machines, are purchased “double” to ensure a back-up in case of breakdown. The Vivadent building is “wheelchair friendly” (ramps and lift for easy access) and centrally located, right across the street from the Health Centre in Vera, with plenty of free parking nearby. There are two spacious waiting rooms, one on each floor, with current magazines and pleasant music to ease the patient wait. The dental surgery is first and foremost a team of qualified professionals. At Vivadent, we are proud to offer the following experts:

•D r. Juan Cremades Peña – chief surgeon and Director, specialising in implants and periodontal surgery (17 years’ experience) •D r. Caridad Hernández Pando – Orthodontist (the only specialist dedicated exclusively to Orthodontics in the Lower Almanzora area) (12 years’ experience) •D r. Daniel Segarra Fenoll – Maxilofacial (reconstructive + cosmetic surgeon)(8 years’ experience) •D r. Luis Francisco Pardo – General dentistry, specialising in Endodontics (root canal treatment)(3 years’ experience) •N uria Laguna – certified hygienist (6 years’ experience) •A na Reyes – registered nurse and receptionist (fully qualified to counsel patients on medication and extract blood or administer injections) (6 years’ experience) •M ª Jose Zurano – fully qualified dental nurse (10 years’ experience) •V alérie Gage – Director of Adminstration and Public Relations (M.B.A., trilingual, 16 years’ experience) We believe that keeping our personnel upto-date is just as important as maintaining state-of-the-art equipment. Everyone on our team receives continuing education. Everyone speaks Dental English as well, and written information on treatments is available in both English and Spanish.

In January 2009 Chris Dedman decided the time had come to do something about her weight; she was fed up with feeling fat and uncomfortable. Consequently one Wednesday morning she walked through the doors of the Parilla for the first time and joined Weight Watchers in Albo; less than a month later, Chris had persuaded daughter Karen Moss to join as well. Both Chris and Karen had been Weight Watchers members back in UK so knew that it would work for them. They found the welcome and support in the club really helped to boost their weekly weight loss and Karen was the first to reach her target at the end of last year while Chris, taking a bit longer, reached hers at the beginning of this March. Mum and Daughter agree that life is much better now and they have more energy and feel so much more confident. They say the compliments they receive from family and friends are also a great moral booster and an incentive to not put it all back on again. Asked what they felt gave them the biggest help in the battle to lose those

So what causes jealousy? What can you do about it? Ask an outsider – confide in a friend and tell them what you’re thinking and why. But you have to accept total honesty and accept what they say…. However uncomfortable it is You will only get total honesty if the friend is not a friend of your partner because their loyalty is not compromised. You’ll get a second opinion and you’ll know whether your feelings and reactions are justified. Often the simple action of admitting that you have problem can help; and by admitting you have the thoughts you are gaining help to put them into perspective and this will stop them from amplifying - put simply you are breaking the spiral.

After you’ve got the feedback from your friend try doing a self evaluation. The feelings and attitudes you’ve developed during your lifetime have caused you to think and behave like this. And they are not yours alone. You are a product of your environment and have been influenced by your family, friends, the media, the newspapers etc. Think objectively about what causes or sparks the behaviour. Make a mind-map if it helps. What I’m doing in the following section is showing a structural way of problem solving by taking all the detail out of a problem you will be able to see it in an unemotional way. You won’t be able to do this in one chunk, that’s not the way the mind works- so keep a note pad and pen and jot down thoughts as they come to you. List the occasions that you have had an outburst and for each outburst break it down into steps name the feelings and own them. They are yours, no one caused them…. The cause is your reaction to what happened. The next step is to break down what happened into steps. Once you have the effects you need to establish the cause what happened? The Joke’s On You! If You Want To Smoke In Spain, Go Directly To Jail! April Fools’ Day - or All Fools’ Day - is celebrated in many countries on 1st April. Marked by hoaxes and other practical jokes of varying sophistication on friends and family, the aim of which is to embarrass the gullible - but remember, April Fools’ jokes can only made before noon on 1 April or the joker is the fool!

The history of April Fool’s Day or All Fool’s Day is uncertain, but the current thinking is that it began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian Calendar was introduced, and New Year’s Day was moved from March 25 - April 1 (New Year’s Week) to January 1. Communication travelled slowly in those days and some people were only informed of the change several years later. Still others, who were more rebellious refused to acknowledge the change and continued to celebrate on the last day of the former celebration, April 1. These people were labeled “fools” by the general populace, were subject to ridicule and sent on “fool errands,” sent invitations to nonexistent parties and had other practical

There will be two ‘humanitarian’ exceptions in the new anti-smoking legislation to be introduced later this year

jokes played upon them. The butts of these pranks became known as a “poisson d’avril” or “April fish” because a young naive fish is easily caught. In addition, one common practice was to hook a paper fish on the back of someone as a joke. This harassment evolved over time and a custom of prankplaying continue on the first day of April. This tradition eventually spread elsewhere like to Britain and Scotland in the 18th century and was introduced to the American colonies by the English and the French. Because of this spread to other countries, April Fool’s Day has taken on an international flavor with each country celebrating the holiday in its own way. In Scotland, for instance, April Fool’s Day is devoted to spoofs involving the buttocks and as

Spain June 22 remains the day reported to have been chosen by the Ministry for Health to stop smoking once and for all in all closed public areas.

In Portugal, April Fool’s Day falls on the Sunday and Monday before lent. In this celebration, many people throw flour at their friends. So, no matter where you happen to be in the world on April 1, don’t be surprised if April fools fall playfully upon you.

Give Us A Leader!

Predictably, our television screens have been filled recently, with the preparations for the forthcoming General Election in the UK, with fly on the wall insights into Brown-theCompassionate, Cameron-the-Father and Clegg-the-Husband-of-a-Glamorous-Wife. Personally, I find all that about as distasteful as it gets and I just want to put my fingers in my ears and hum loudly until they all go away. We have heard it all, seen it all and frankly disbelieved it all before…we have a wardrobe full of tee shirts. Nothing changes, except of course those glib little catchphrases and sound bites.

We used to hear the words “spin doctor” and “log jam” in almost every sentence and all those other natty little phrases that the politicians were so fond of using. Now we get “steep learning curve” and “do you know what?” whenever they want to make a telling point. A bit of originality would be in order, but there we have the problem in a nutshell. Today’s politicians are all clones of each other and have absolutely nothing original or interesting to say any more. They are happy to be portrayed as ordinary human beings on these TV specials, but then, by way of contradiction, they tell us it’s not about personalities, but all about policies. Well I’m sorry, and I’ll brook no argument on this . . . it isn’t! People want to hear, clear, outspoken, and controversial views on the serious issues of the day – the issues that we the public are most concerned about – delivered by strong and courageous leaders, and to hell with political correctness. Then and only then will the people believe in their credibility and thereby their policies. They say things like, “Let me make myself perfectly clear about this”, when all that trips off their tongues is double-talk and vague

promises. They talk incessantly about “radical measures” - another one of their favourite terms! Radical? Don’t make me laugh. Old Winston would have knocked them into a cocked hat – whenever he stood up to address the house, everyone listened. He could grab the listener by the throat and everyone knew he would follow up with action; he was no angel, but he was a leader and he put his country first.

The Government now wants to do away with all smokers zones established under the current legislation, and see will also be adding dramatic photos to cigarette packets from November.

such is called Taily Day. The butts of these jokes are known as April ‘Gowk’, another name for cuckoo bird. The origins of the “Kick Me” sign can be traced back to the Scottish observance.

What a contrast to the double-talking, selfinterested bunch of social misfits that we see in Parliament today, who couldn’t even lead a singa-long on a coach trip. Just when Britain needs a leader, we get a Prime Minister with all the characteristics of a ventriloquist’s dummy, with the hand of an unelected, twicedisgraced, puppet master up his back! And I don’t kid myself that the others would be any different

Our once great nation is in free fall and there is no one within the political spectrum that even remotely looks willing and capable of tackling the real and potentially terminal problems that beset our country. But that’s because no one is courageous enough to take on vested interests and the real masters and villains of the piece…the all-pervasive EU. Or for once, put the interests of it’s own citizens first and foremost and champion the rights and freedoms of the poor, the old and those leastable to protect themselves, before the human rights of those who despise our traditional way of life. Patriotism – the word that must never be uttered – and honour are virtually dead, with truth, the corner stone of democracy, the chief victim of modern day politics. As Churchill himself said: “Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened.”

The tougher anti-smoking legislation in Spain which will ban all smoking in closed public areas will in fact allow smoking in two places – prison and on the psychiatrist’s couch, ‘for humanitarian reasons’ The exceptions date from the Ley 28/2005 but it’s understood will be in the new legislation. “Prohibiting tobacco, coffee or soft drinks in any jail in the country would be a time bomb which could explode at any moment’” prison union ACAIP commented.

The union says official smoking areas in prison don’t in fact exist with the inmates smoking in their cells, and less so in the dining room. The draft of the new legislation will be presented by the Minister for Health in June. It’s understood the text is still being drawn up, but it will see an end to smoking in all closed public spaces, doing away with the current permissions for small bars and smokers areas in larger ones. If you are a smoker in

The cabinet will present its ideas to the Interregional council – where all the bosses of the regional health services in Spain will come together with other professionals. It will stop smoking in all bars, restaurants, hotels, discothèques, established areas in airports and other transport stations. The main change to the current legislation established in 2005 - is the elimination of article 8, which allowed for small bars to chose whether to be smoking or not, and the establishment of areas for smokers in larger bars and restaurants.

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

A good day’s work really. It had been tough, requiring a great deal of organisation and co-ordination but the troublemaker had been trapped, tried, convicted, executed and buried; leaving his band of ardent followers in total disarray, all in under 24 hours. A pretty satisfactory conclusion, all in all The trouble had been that he’d undermined the authority of the establishment; treading on far too many sensitive toes in the process. And authority, as always, meant power and money, so his actions and attitude just couldn’t be tolerated. For in those days, 2000 years ago, the Church was the establishment and its hierarchy wielded absolute power over the people, imposing a code of strict religious laws, traditions and penalties to keep the people in their place, albeit on behalf of the secular Roman rulers. But this man, Jesus, wasn’t religious in the generally accepted sense so hadn’t been cowed by their authority and taught that ordinary people could approach God direct, without needing a priest to act as intermediary. And worse, he dared to suggest that the priests and other leaders were as sinful in God’s sight as anyone else, and that many of their imposed traditions and religious laws were against the will of God, depriving the people of their rightful relationship with a God who he saw as a loving and merciful father, rather than the unforgiving tyrant their religion tended to portray. And of course the common people loved his teaching so his following was growing at dangerous speed, necessarily requiring decisive action. So what a shock it must have been when a few days later rumours began spreading, suggesting that he was no longer dead, and his followers began to regroup, boldly proclaiming forgiveness of sin through Jesus, the risen son of God. For as the chorus of a hymn I recall from my youth put this wonderful Easter message: “Living he loved me; dying he saved me; buried he carried my sins far away. Rising he justified freely forever. One day he’s coming. O glorious day”. The Write Th i n g

If you want to be a writer you need to develop a sharp ear for the unusual and also a sharp eye for detail. It’s important to notice such things as peculiarities of speech, habitual verbal clichés, dialect and accent. And it’s essential to observe exactly how your subject walks, moves, stands, sits and so on. Do they use their hands when they’re talking? Some people act as if they’re conducting an orchestra when they’re speaking. Others are restless, walking up and down, possibly wringing their hands or fiddling with their fingers as they try to formulate their ideas. Yet others are still creatures, a bit like cats, they seem to sit motionless taking everything in and occasionally striking with the odd incisive observation. We’re all different, like snowflakes and there are endless possibilities for a creative writer.

Don’t forget to use your journals for this kind of note-taking. It’s surprising how much difference it can make to your writing when you have authentic descriptive detail at your fingertips.

And the good thing about sitting quietly in a corner taking notes is that, unlike someone with a camera your ‘spying’ activities are more likely to pass unnoticed by the objects of your scrutiny!

Listening to people at art exhibitions can sometimes be very revealing and also a source of humour later. Practice writing everything in 250 words. Your journal is ideal for such exercises. It can be both rewarding and challenging to give yourself strict criteria for your writing. You will find the discipline useful in a number of ways. It will ensure you use your vocabulary to its maximum potential and develop the skill of brevity. Sometimes the undiluted version of events is far more pertinent and effective. Like having a strong black coffee to give us a quick kick-start, imposing word limits can have the same effect on our powers of description.

I am always reminding aspiring writers to use their journals. Your journal should be your best friend. You can use it in a variety of ways. You may use it to capture spontaneous ideas, snatches of poetry, to record strong impressions and feelings, profound thoughts, dreams and ideas. It can also be useful as a scrap-book. I like to cut out interesting snippets, quotes, book and film reviews etc., these can form the basis of a piece of writing. If you’ve read a good book, seen a good – or bad – play or film, maybe been to an art exhibition write a review of it yourself. But aim to be different, try to say something original or witty. Write a praising review then write its opposite in equally strong terms. Describe the people who attended the event and capture some of their conversation.

At ‘the write thing’ you can learn more about simple techniques to help your writing. You will also gain confidence by sharing your work with others. If you are interested in joining a new group then phone Kate: 950 469540 or email:

Try hanging your television on the wall above the fireplace. This way you’ll be able to see both at the same time, and neither will compete for attention. You may need to have an electrical outlet installed in the wall above your fireplace, if you don’t already have one there. If your mantel is constructed of a sturdy material, such as stone, you might also consider displaying the television on a pedestal; if it’s unusually high, place a media cabinet next to the fireplace. You’ll be able to set your television on a pedestal and use the cabinet to house the rest of your electronic equipment. Before mounting your television over your fireplace, consult your owner’s manual to make sure that it can withstand the heat when you light a fire and consult a contractor or the manufacturer about how to best hang the unit securely.

In short, everything you need to know, to ensure a happy and enjoyable life in this wonderful part of southern Spain. Today’s topic is important to both those looking to sell and also to those wishing to purchase Spanish property; whether it be an apartment, villa or country estate - you need to know Is it Properly and Fully Registered? Why is this important? At this present time and particularly in this current financial climate any disparity between the actual registered size or content of a property, will be highlighted by a surveyor sent to value the property by the bank for any purchaser, and every bank involved in the provision of a mortgage for property, will refuse until it is registered correctly. These variations between the actual property and the registered information can occur in a number of way’s, examples of which are:

The number of people in Almeria, whose properties are not properly registered is quite incredible!...and it was often taken to be the acceptable norm, but this is no longer the case.

Beware if you think that because you are not selling your property that this does not affect you. The tax office may well start to investigate this situation, to increase tax revenues. Properties found to be at fault, may well end up being penalised with penalty payments being charged.

‘Guerrilla Gardeners’ in Glasgow ha ve been liberating derelict and barren land in the city an d turning it into gardens. ‘Guerrilla Gardeners’ in Glasgow have been liberating derelict and barren land in the city and turning it into gardens. The roots of guerrilla gardening can be traced back to New York in 1973 when artist Liz Christy, who lived in the city’s Lower East Side, assembled her friends and neighbours to clean out and take back an abandoned lot on the corner of Bowery and Houston.

and seeds. Primarily aimed to be used in areas where guerrilla gardeners are unable to cultivate land by themselves be it through fear of reprisal for hanging around one place too long or in a place where they simply cannot reach - the seed bomb contains all the vital elements for plant life to begin.

D u b b i n g themselves the Green Guerrillas they removed the rubbish and revitalised the soil, planting flowers, trees and edibles, while offering gardening workshops. Liz Christy took to petitioning the city’s Housing and Preservation Department to make their newly-created garden - which they called the Bowery Garden - an official community garden. To this day it remains, taken care of by the Green Guerrillas and volunteers. It is now recognised by the city as an established community garden. The history of illicit gardening in Britain goes back centuries, starting with “the Diggers” - a group of socialites in the 17th Century who fought for the right to cultivate land. Some say that the origins of guerrilla gardening in the modern age can be traced back to the hippie movement in the 1960s. More recently, a statue of Winston Churchill was given an impromptu grass mohawk during the May Day riots in London in 2000. But it was not until Richard Reynolds decided to create a blog about his “illicit cultivations a r o u n d London” in 2004 that it started to become a community in the UK.

Not a manifesto as such, it gives a detailed history of guerrilla gardening as well as stories he has picked up on his travels visiting other guerrilla gardeners around the world. The movement has spread its seeds far and wide, with “cells” existing in places as far flung as Australia and Brazil. Indeed, any country that has a community of obsessive gardeners is likely to have an underground community of guerrillas, taking back public space. The “seed bomb” is one of the more unconventional weapons they use, alongside more traditional watering cans, shovels, trowels, pitchforks, plants

The current seed bomb is a far cry from the green grenades that were used when the movement began in 1973. Back then, they contained water, peat moss, fertilizer and seeds encased in Christmas decorations and water balloons.

Nowadays there is more than one design and they are more environmentally conscious, using peat-free compost and organic fertilisers. The most common type of seed bomb is the clay seed ball. These can be created at home using a mixture of clay soil, compost, seeds and water and can be moulded into any shape. As times change so does the sophistication of the weaponry, and the latest innovation in seed bomb design has come from Glasgow-based studio Kabloom. These new, more environmentallyfriendly “SeedBoms” were created by Darren Wilson, who became involved in the Glasgow guerrilla gardening movement after finding out about it during research for the product. He created his own grenade-shaped version which is made using r ec yc led

materials alongside the ingredients needed to grow the flowers. “It’s a bit fun, a bit quirky - a bit different. It’s all about the fun, all about the interaction and making an impact... anyone can use these,” he said. Darren has gone on to become an integral part of the guerrilla gardening cell in Glasgow, alongside founders Jennifer Calder and Michael Gallacher. While the actions of guerrilla gardeners are technically illegal, as they are transforming land which does not belong to them, the Glasgow group has won the endorsement of the local city council. The council cannot afford to revitalise every bit of barren space in Glasgow, but is happy to support the guerrilla gardeners in their efforts to bring more colour back to the “dear green place”.

Lady GaGa: ‘Next Album Is Best Yet’ Lady GaGa has promised that her forthcoming third album will contain her most impressive material yet. The ‘Telephone’ star is currently busy with her international ‘Monster Ball’ tour but has still been managing to fit in time for songwriting. Speaking about her next LP, GaGa revealed: “I’m working on it now and I’ve already written the core of it so I’m just continuing to travel around the world and make something really great.” She added: “It’s certainly my best work to date.” The follow-up to GaGa’s previous albums The Fame and The Fame Monster is expected to be released at the end of this year. She has previously vowed to embrace “new ideas” on the record.

Geri Halliwell: ‘Robbie Saved My Life’ Geri Halliwell has claimed that Robbie Williams helped save her life when she was battling bulimia.

The 37-year-old former Spice Girl admitted that it was Williams who persuaded her to check into a US clinic for treatment with her eating disorder. Speaking about her battles with her weight during an interview with Piers Morgan, the singer said: “I was worried I’d get fat - I would binge and then felt fatter and would make myself sick, it was awful. “Robbie knew about my bulimia and he advised me to get help. He told me to go into rehab and that possibly saved my life.

David Baddiel has revealed his hopes for the new version of his hit football record ‘Three Lions’

The bulimia would have got worse without it. I will always be grateful to him, always.”

However, Halliwell also insists during the interview that she never dated the Take That popstar. “I became really close to Robbie after leaving the Spice Girls and it was a very poignant friendship,” she said.

Baddiel told The Sun: “Trevor has done this brilliant orchestral version of ‘Three Lions’. It has opera singers, a choir and a full orchestra.

Baddiel Wants Allen & Winehouse on ‘Lions’

The track was originally co-written and performed with Lightning Seeds and Frank Skinner, but the comedians will not be singing on the Trevor Horn-produced version being re-released for this year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Welcome to Plane Parking the Number 1 Parking solution specialist in Murcia (Spain).

“I’m not sure who will be singing the main part. I had the idea of doing it with a rag tag bag of English eccentrics - Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse, Michael Caine, Gazza, people like that.”

However, he added: “I don’t feel it’s up to us any more as it’s a song and anyone can cover it. I just hope it’s not the Sugababes!”

3 Wonderful Ways With Leeks The dark green leaves can be trimmed and used to flavour stock or to make a bouquet garni alongside herbs such as rosemary, thyme, bay leaves and parsley. Once washed, raw leek stems are delicious sliced thinly and added to green salads, or lightly steamed and served as a side dish. Leeks are easily overcooked, and are at their best when barely tender. They are done when you can pierce the base with the point of a knife.

Even more impressive is the monumental torque figure of 350Nm at just 2,500rpm which blitzes the majority of the Cupra R’s hot-hatch rivals including theRenaultsportMegane 250. Power is channelled to the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox – though SEAT is considering the DSG unit seen on other VW Group products but is wary of the Cupra R becoming too similar to the Scirocco R. The two cars are remarkably similar in performance as they share the same engine. However, the Leon has a couple of real-world advantages as it features five doors for added practicality, and is lighter than the Scirocco, helping both performance and economy - the R boasts CO2 figures of 190 g/km and returns 34.9mpg. Exterior styling tweaks come in the form of twin centrally mounted exhausts emerging from a gloss black diffuser and are joined by an extended high level rear spoiler and subtle ‘R’ badging.

A range of striking new paint colours, including metallic ‘Tribu’ yellow seen here, compliment the 19-inch, twin 5-spoke Potenza alloys, whilst inside quilted leather bucket-style sports seats and gloss black seat backs with ‘R’ logos provide a suitably sporty feel. The Cupra R will cost £25,205 when it goes on sale next month, undercutting the Scirocco R by a little over £3,000

AMG’s recent power surge is about to continue in smaller cars, with an all-new forced-induction V6 saloon based around the upcoming B-Class Mercedes architecture. It will be the second model after the SLS to be built from scratch by AMG.

Designed to take on Audi’s imminent RS3 and BMW’s M1, the saloon was previewed by the F800 Concept at the Geneva Motor Show, and the production car, code-named C117 EVO, will give AMG a £30,000 entry-level price point to make it more accessible than the current £50,000 C63 AMG. Already being dubbed a CLS-lite, the new car will measure in at around 4500mm long –400mm shorter than its bigger brother – but it will share its philosophy of frameless doors and four-door coupe styling when it arrives in 2013. Sources have confirmed that the baby AMG will use a 3.2-litre V6 AMG has tossed out Benz’s turbochargers in favour of the relatively untried Comprex forced induction system – a

form of supercharger. Invented in 1987 by Swiss engineering firm, Brown, Boveri and Cie, the Comprex system is said to boost power by up to 30 percent by directing the energy from the exhaust manifold’s pulses into a chamber, where it directly acts on incoming air to force it into the inlet manifolds. Sources inside AMG confirmed they’ve had a flood of benchmarking cars through the Affalterbach factory as they try to get to grips with what’s expected in the competition. AMG engineers have been busy driving the Audi S3, the Focus RS and hot versions of everything from Renault’s Megane to Honda’s Integra. And it’s not just AMG that’s ringing the changes. Mercedes is ready a new range of V6 and V8 ‘MoVe’ petrol engines. Both powerplants will feature turbocharging, lower consumption and more power. The 3.5-litre V6 will have 306bhp when it debuts in this year’s new CLS, while the V8 in the CLS will shrink to just 4.6-litres, and produce 435bhp.

mojacar angling club Four ‘Grumpy Old Men of Los Gallardos’ caught nothing when fishing the Indalo arm last week - in fact they didn’t even get a bite between them! They weren’t impressed when I showed them a photo of anglers fishing in the new Garrucha marina and catching bucket loads of Dorada. To be fair to the lads the fishing from Mojacar’s shores has been poor recently and only Garrucha and north of there has been producing by the reports I’ve received. ‘London Bill’ again this week took advantage of good fishing in Garrucha marina and caught his share alongside the many Spanish anglers that were lined up there. Night time is fishing best by far and the squid lure fishing may end soon. I’m told the season is November to early April, so get out there while you can and hook a few. Last year Garrucha trawlers weren’t allowed to fish in April and I wonder if the same will happen this year. I don’t know if it was coincidence but the shore fishing last summer was the best

urcal golf society Despite an overcast day last Saturday, Urcal Society played their monthly competition at Playa Macenas in warm weather and the course as usual in great condition as was reflected on some very good scoring.

I’ve known here in the Med. ‘Farmer Rory’ and I went out with Captain ‘Brian’ Cuba and we caught a few, maybe 30 or 40, pandoras, combers and blue mouths only though. Some of the combers and pandoras were the biggest I’ve seen caught. See photo of me catching them three at a time. (Pandora top with two blue mouths below) Captain ‘Duncan’ Sunshine took a mate out but within a few minutes of getting the boat positioned the wind turned and strengthened and fishing the bottom became difficult. I think they only caught one fish between them.

Captain ‘Graham’ Gnome’ also went out this week but without any great success. It is poor fishing all round at the moment and I can’t see it changing until the cold and unstable weather Sol Times Almeria and Sol Times Calida are independent of political parties, sorts itself out. private investment and government. The angler thought he was getting a bite and struck with his telegraph pole and broke Barry’s line! ‘Baza Barry’ fished his favourite Murcia lake and caught small carp and barbel. He also hooked a cheeky black bass that had been passing by his feet a few times. Barry free lined a bug he picked from a bush and the sucker took it. The fishing meeting at the Beachcomber was a great success with about 40 anglers and some of their wives turning up. Many thanks to our experts for giving lots of advice and especially to ‘Luxemburg Roland’ for the display and fly tying demonstrations. His collection of squid lures was also of great interest. I will organise another evening, maybe in May. Checkout Mojacar’s weather and sea conditions here on the Beachcomber’s webcam: www. At the start of this season nobody in Britain could have predicted the roller coaster ride the game of football was about to take us on, with many lower league and a few high profile clubs suffering at the hands of the recession, Portsmouth F.C being the most high profile It was and still is a similar case for us footy fans here in Spain, fans and unfortunately players! In October of last year Tom Farthing was told he would be pre-season training with the first team of C.D.Baza, having signed four years previous making club history as the first English player to join the club. Unfortunately in early January of this year Tom was called into the manager’s office and given some devastating news. The manager was not sure whether there would even be a C.D.Baza next season, sponsorship was being squeezed and he himself had not been paid along with the players for the previous two months. He told Tom to use his skills and try to find another club which could promise a more stable future if that was what Tom still wanted to do. It was! Over the last six weeks Tom has been in England, he has had football trials for Middlesbrough, Hartlepool and Darlington football clubs all of which said he has great skill and vision but all of whom said something to the tune of “If you had come to us two years ago we would have signed you, but due to the financial situation our club is in we just don’t have time or the money to take a chance on you”. As you can imagine Tom was feeling very low at this point until out of the blue two weeks ago Tom received a phone call from Mick Mulligan the Chairman of a team called Norton and Stockton Ancients F.C. He had heard about Tom on the football grapevine, himself having been involved with Middlesbrough F.C for over fifteen years. To cut a very long story short. Tom has signed until the end of this season with a view to

doing pre season with their first team. He played his inaugural game since Christmas for their reserves last Wednesday night in the pouring rain and walked away with the Man of the Match award. Chairman Mick Mulligan told me, “It is very rare to see, but every once in a while you see a player who is so committed and so focused that you just have to take a chance and Tom Farthing is that player. A little bird also told me that a scout for Middlesbrough and Newcastle football clubs was watching the game and asked about Tom after the game, so watch this space.

...remember to say you saw it in the SOL TIMES

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson has been appointed to lead the Ivory Coast at this summer’s World Cup.

A statement released by the FIF said: “Aware of the great expectations of our population who have taken a keen interest in the matter, the executive committee focused its choice on Mr Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The veteran Swede will be manager of the African nation as they attempt to make an impact in South Africa. His last job was as director of football at Notts County, who he left in February, however he has recent international experience having been boss of Mexico until being sacked in April 2009.

“The Swede has been, among others, coach of England and Mexico. He is an experienced technician who has been proven.

Eriksson led England from 2001 until 2006, twice steering the team to World Cup quarter-finals.

The Ivory Coast have been handed a difficult World Cup group draw against Brazil, Portugal and North Korea, and Eriksson has been instructed to ensure his team give an “honourable” performance. Ivory Coast, whose team is nicknamed ‘the Elephants’,

Former Real Madrid boss Bernd Schuster and former Wales and Manchester City manager Mark Hughes were both recently linked with the job, however 62-year-old Eriksson’s experience worked in his favour.

suffered a disappointing quarter-final exit at the hands of Algeria during the African Nations Cup at the start of the year. That prompted the national federation - the FIF - to part company with coach Vahid Halilhodzic.

“His mission is to lead our team during this World Cup, and to ensure that there is an honourable participation in a competition reserved for the top 32 football nations in the world, and it obviously will be difficult. “Therefore, the executive committee of the FIF appeals to the sacred union between the ‘Elephants’ and their coach.”

jenson on the button down under

World champion Jenson Button admitted he did not expect to be winning races so early into his McLaren career after victory in a thrilling Australian Grand Prix today which sent the right message to Formula One’s critics. Albert Park played host to a race filled with drama and overtaking to help diminish complaints that the sport was boring following the uninspiring season-opener in Bahrain. The excitement was aided by a spell of rain

shortly before the start which forced teams to quickly change to intermediate tyres. Seconds after the five red lights went out, Fernando Alonso spun at the first turn after hitting Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes as Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel comfortably held onto first place. A crash between BMW Sauber’s Kamui Kobayashi and Williams’ Nico Hulkenberg brought the safety car out and once it left at the end of lap five, Button was the first to enter the pits to switch to slicks.

It proved an inspirational decision as he charged into second place before Vettel suffered brake failure to bring an end to his race, leaving Button firmly in control as he breezed to victory in Melbourne for the second successive year. The 30-year-old had felt that his car was not quite capable of challenging the pace of rivals Red Bull and Ferrari, but made the right tactical choice. Asked about winning his first race with McLaren, Button said: “I thought it would take longer than this. A lot depends on what sort of car you come out of the box with. “I don’t know in general pace where we would stand but that is not all racing is about. It is also about strategy, thinking and conserving. “We did it correctly today and we came away with a good victory. This is very special and whatever happens over the next few races, this means a lot to me.” Hamilton was left frustrated by a decision to call him into the pits for a second tyre change. The 25-year-old had driven superbly from 11th on the grid to challenge for second at one stage, but that fell away following a second pit stop before a clash with Mark Webber’s Red Bull saw him

cross the line sixth. “I was in a good position for the podium,” he said. “The tyres would have been pretty good. They may have struggled towards the end, but that is what happened with the other guys.I had the pace to overtake (Robert) Kubica and we could have had a first one-two and it would have been fantastic for the team, but that was not the case.” Robert Kubica brought his Renault home in a credible second place, with Massa in third ahead of team-mate Alonso in the Ferraris. Rosberg took fifth spot as a result of Mark Webber taking himself and Hamilton off a few laps from home. Hamilton recovered to take sixth, Liuzzi was seventh in the Torro Rosso, Barrichello’s Williams was eighth, Webber claimed ninth and Michael Schumacher could do no better than tenth, eclipsed again by team-mate Rosberg in the Mercedes.

Clancy Claims Gold for GB A sensational individual performance from consummate team man Ed Clancy delivered Great Britain’s third Track Cycling World Championships title - but Victoria Pendleton was denied her second gold on a dramatic final day in Copenhagen. Clancy, already the owner of three world team pursuit titles and Olympic gold, was a surprise winner of the men’s omnium, a multi-discipline event which is to join the London 2012 programme. But Pendleton was denied her ninth world title in the women’s keirin, despite video evidence proving conclusively she had been obstructed by champion Simona Krupeckaite of Lithuania. The UCI, the sport’s governing body, studied their own footage and British Cycling’s prior to the medal ceremony, but deemed the result should stand, with Pendleton taking the silver. The decision overshadowed what was a remarkable performance from Clancy, who was a relative novice in three of the five omnium events but followed Sir Chris Hoy and Pendleton to the top step of the world podium. Britain finished second in the overall championship standings behind old adversaries Australia, but accumulated three gold, four silver and one bronze from the 10 Olympic events on the 19event programme at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen. The omnium was something of an unknown prospect for Clancy, whose fatigue at the end of the day was exacerbated by an early start this morning. The 25-year-old, who was born in Barnsley and lives in Newtonle-Willows, awoke an hour earlier than intended after his alarm clock automatically adjusted when he had already taken into

account daylight saving time. But he responded with victories in the first event, the 200metres time-trial, and the one-kilometre time-trial, the final event. He also claimed top-five finishes in the individual pursuit and the points race to win ahead of defending champion Leigh Howard and Taylor Phinney, the two-time world individual pursuit champion. Pendleton’s attempts to add to Clancy’s gold and claim her second keirin world title were undermined when Krupeckaite twice strayed out of the sprinter’s corridor - between the black and red lines on the track - clearly infringing the rules. The winning margin was minute and Krupeckaite’s move hindered Pendleton’s prospects of a second title of the week. The UCI dismissed Britain’s protest, leaving performance director Dave Brailsford fuming. “Those are the rules and they didn’t have the bottle to apply the rules,” Brailsford said. “Why have the rules if you don’t apply them?” Pendleton was less upset, but the decision could have implications for her bid to qualify for the 2011 World Championships keirin in Apeldoorn as only the world champion has an automatic invitation. “Somebody up there is going to have to explain to me a little bit later quite why,” she said. Pendleton finished with sprint gold, keirin silver and fourth in the team sprint alongside Jessica Varnish. “I’ve fulfilled all my ambitions this week,” said Pendleton.
