FALL 2012, Issue N° 8
NEW PHOTOVOLTAIC PLANTS Works have been completed at the Porcari Delicarta Cartiera and Soffass Trasformazione plants for the installation of 30,000 square meters of new photovoltaic panels capable of approximately 1956 kW and an annual production estimated at approximately 1,975,000 kWh. The two projects are a further phase of Sofidel’s quest to reduce emissions, which has seen the Group’s increased investment in the use of energy from renewable sources (photovoltaic and hydroelectric); improvement in the efficiency of its plants and equipment (e.g., increased use of LED lighting) and the activation of new cogeneration plants, such as its Delitissue plant in Ciechanov, Poland. The new photovoltaic panels at Delicarta Cartiera were installed on the roof of the structure housing its PM1 and PM2 machines and at the reels warehouse, totalling an overall increase of about 15,000 m². At Soffass Trasformazione, on the other hand, the new panels were installed on the roof of the warehouses where finished products are stored. This has also led to an overall increase of 15,000 m². To get an idea of the production capacity in terms of the number of families the panels can satisfy, the new instalments can meet the annual energy requirements of 728 families. Taking into consideration Sofidel’s already existing plants, the Group now boasts 70,000 m² of photovoltaic plants in Italy alone, with an estimated annual production of 3,975,000 kWh, equivalent to approximately 1470 families.

UNDER THE WATCHFUL EYE OF THE PRESS… The arrival of an Italian company in the US in a difficult time for the economy meant that Sofidel’s acquisition of Cellynne was bound to attract the attention of the press. This can only be seen as positive, in that it has helped shed light on what the Group does. However, it also highlights our increasing responsibility towards our stakeholders, both internal and external.

NEW FOREST CHAIN CUSTODY CERTIFICATIONS More and more Sofidel factories are achieving forest chain
custody certification. In Poland, Delitissue has just been awarded PEFC certification, which complements its already existing FSC certification. The latter has just been awarded to Sofidel’s Delicarta Valdottavo factory (see picture) in Italy. The chain of custody certifies both the provenance of the raw material used (cellulose) from sustainably managed forests and the traceability of the entire production process. Therefore, it guarantees that any product bearing the relative logo has effectively been sourced from a sustainably managed forest.
NEW ECOLABEL FOR CELLULOSE FIBRE PAPER MILL The Cellulose fibre paper mill located in Bagni di Lucca (Italy) has been awarded the Ecolabel for its production and sales of reels. Ecolabel, Europe’s official label for ecological quality, certifies products (and services) whose entire life cycle is environmentally friendly. The latter is based not only on the impact of emissions into the air and water but also on consumption (in terms of the product’s contribution to global warming, eutrophication, acidification and toxicity to humans and the environment). It also certifies the safety of the product.
