Ethical Issues and our Carbon Neutral Commitment

We do our level best to run a fair, ethical and fun business. We’re not on a mission to collect eco-badges for the sake of it, but sustainability and the opportunity to enhance life, land and people for the future is what drives us. As part of our commitment to the environment, since 2005 we have purchased all our electricity from renewable energy supplier ‘Good Energy’, and we offset 100% of our company’s carbon with Carbon Clear, making us a carbon neutral business.

Carbon Clear is a leading carbon management company that provides advisory services and carbon offset credits to organisations around the world, including Vintage Roots. We sell goods which are licensed by the Fairtrade Foundation fairtrade.org.uk and fairforlife.net

We are powered by Good Energy goodenergy.co.uk All of our products are certified as organic to the standards of the UK’s Organic Food Federation orgfoodfed.com

Let us not forget that by the very nature of being produced organically, the wines we deal with carry only about half the eco-footprint of many conventionally produced wines. As reported in New Scientist August 2008.

More information – better choices Alcohol % There is a big difference between drinking glasses of 11% and 15% wine, and increasingly we are being told to be aware. We have decided to detail just alcohol volumes where outside the average 12.5%-13.5% range. Closures We have decided to highlight wines that have a screwcap (Stelvin), and those with synthetic (plastic) closure. All others you can assume are cork. Stelvin – increasingly common and accepted widely, particularly for whites, rosé and young fresh reds. Synthetic – our least preferred closure and where it crops up we always will apply pressure to the producer for a better option.

LS/NS/Sulphur levels Sulphites and Sulphur dioxide (SO 2) are used in nearly all wines for preservation purposes. All certified organic and biodynamic wines have regulated ‘lower than conventional’ levels, and we’ve decided to give a further indication where these levels are known to be very low. Low Sulphur Added – From a low initial ‘organic’ level, we’ve taken wines which use only 50% or less of their maximum allowed level to be in this category (75mg/litre or less for whites and rosé and 50mg/litre for reds). No Sulphur Added - These are the wines with the lowest sulphur levels you will find anywhere. None at all is added, though tiny amounts can be produced as a natural by-product of the fermentation process.

Every effort is made to keep this information up to date, however sometimes where we change vintages mid list, details can vary. Do check with us as you need to.

Like Us For Business Business should also be about enjoyment, as well as earning a living. We believed this back in 1986 when we started our organic wine company (we enjoyed wine!). Crucially we also had a message, a simple message really – ‘organic quality’. It wasn’t some blind faith in someone else’s brand, it came to us after seeing, tasting with and talking to many producers. Organic, was surely and ideally the way wine should be. We know from recent research that many of you feel the same way, you believe too in the organic message, and your customers may believe in the quality, and our wines can be enjoyed for both reasons. We like that very much.

Whether you’re a restaurant, wine shop, deli, hotel, club or event organiser, we want to do business with you and we’ll help you develop your wine and drinks range, whether you’re an organic fanatic or purely a quality first and foremost believer. Our sales force and office team at HQ are ‘the organic wine people’, still headed up by Neil and Lance who founded the company. We’re here to help build and progress your business with you, whether it be selecting your best choice wines, helping with display and promotions, staff training or organising a full blown wine event. We’ve got the products and the people with passion, you’ve got the place(s). So to get in touch or for queries, help, or advice on how to open an account with us, call on 0118 932 6566 (Mon-Fri) or email trade@vintageroots.co.uk We very much look forward to building new links, making new friends and continuing our ongoing work with current clients.

Sulphur and N‘ o Sulphur Added’ Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is the most widely used and controversial additive in winemaking. It’s used as an antiseptic (to kill off unwanted moulds, bacteria and yeasts) and as an antioxidant (to inhibit oxygen spoiling the wine). Sulphur derivatives or sulphites occur in 99.9% of all wines in varying amounts, and for a few years it’s been law to include a ‘contains sulphites’ advice on all wine labels where there’s over 10 parts per million in the wine. Up to this level and sometimes above, it’s produced naturally as a by product of the fermentation process itself. An increasing number of people see avoiding additives as a stepping stone towards health improvement, but don’t always realise where and how these ‘additives’ can pop up in food and drink. Sulphur can cause adverse reactions in people, and sometimes quite severe such as headaches, wheeziness, flushing and perhaps even a sense of ‘hangover’ the next morning, even if only a moderate amount of wine has been consumed.

EIS06

ESV03

ERZ10

ERZ11

Compared on average to conventional wines, all certified organic wines contain lower levels of sulphites. Maximum permitted levels are set lower by some 25-50% depending on residual sugar levels. To help customers with a really ‘low sulphur’ choice, last year we introduced a ‘LS’ or ‘Low Sulphur Added’ category in the Wine List for all wines which use 50% or less of their maximum allowed dosage for organic. (75 mg/litre or less for whites and rosés and 50 mg/litre or less for reds). For those people (and it seems to be an increasing number) that prefer to avoid sulphites altogether, there’s a growing number (we reject many) of top quality wines now available. These are in the lowest of the low category and are denoted by ‘NS’ in our list for ‘No Sulphur Added’.

The only way to choose a wine that’s vegetarian or vegan suitable, is to buy from a merchant that finds this information out directly from it’s suppliers, or choose a wine that carries the vegetarian or vegan approved symbols.

Vegetarian and Vegan Wine The fact that a wine is organic or biodynamic has no bearing on whether the wine will be suitable for vegetarians or vegans. What’s important (and we find out with every one of our wines), is how it is treated or finished in the final stages of being made.

The part where fermented wine is cleared of all the floating particles and sediments (dead yeasts, proteins, tannins etc) is called ‘fining’ (or clarification). This is done so your wine in hand is nice and clear, bright and presentable. There’s different ways to achieve this end result. If the wine producer has time on his or her hands, it will happen naturally over several weeks or months, settling by gravity the sediments sink to the bottom of the storage tanks, after which the clear wine can be taken (racked) off. However, waiting so long is sometimes not an option, it’s here that the winemaker can choose to speed the process up, by using one of a variety of products, some of which are animal based. For example gelatine (protein from animal bones and cartilage), isinglass (swim bladders from fish) are hardly very vegetarian or vegan suitable, even though, reportedly none of these fining agents actually remain in your finished bottle. Casein (milk protein) and albumen (egg whites from organic eggs if organic wine) are vegetarian suitable agents which may be preferable, but still would be unacceptable to strict vegans. For them, only bentonite (an inert clay) or a wine that’s been cleared naturally over time would get the thumbs up.

Although there are rumours for new labelling requirements for some of the mentioned products, nothing has yet been fixed. So the only way you are likely to be able to choose a wine that’s vegetarian or vegan suitable, is to buy from a merchant that finds this information out directly from it’s suppliers, keeps it up to date and passes it on via it’s wine list, or choose a wine that carries the vegetarian or vegan approved symbols. In times gone by dried blood was even used to fine wine, though this is now outlawed. It also should be mentioned that the choice of fining product by a producer may change from vintage to vintage, as it can affect the mouth feel (and therefore perceived quality) of the wine too. Vintage Roots will always encourage our producers to make their wines vegetarian and/or vegan suitable, as we like to have our wines enjoyed by as many as possible, and appreciate this information is important for choice. Look for the ‘V’ (Vegetarian suitable) and ‘VG’ (Vegan suitable) symbols on our website and in our Wine List.

New Wines 2013 Austria - Meinklang

France - Côtes de Provence

Burgenland

EAA06 Graupert Zweigelt 2010

10.35 124.20

Château Léoube

DFC02 AOC Côtes de Provence Petit

A great red to partner the ‘Graupert’ Pinot Gris added last year. ‘Graupert’ stands in the local Austrian dialect for ‘wild’ or ‘unkempt’, and the vines here enjoy absolute freedom. No pruning happens on these vines, which after several years find their own natural balance which gives lots of grape bunches, with small berries. The higher proportional grape skin to juice ratio adds real complexity and richness to this wonderful mellow red, which brims over with ripe black cherry fruit flavours.

Rosé Tout Simple 2012

Château Léoube

Champagne

AFZ24 AOC Champagne Notes Blanches Pinot Blanc Brut Nature NV

34.00

408.00

Rare Champagne made from 100% Pinot Blanc (little known but permitted variety, after Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier). Usually used in blends only, in 2009 it was decided to create this all new cuvée. Generously rounded with ripe, soft white fruit flavours. It’s quirky yes, and excitingly different, with just 3500 bottles produced.

Rosé de Léoube 2012

40% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. Under its pale colour, the Château Léoube rosé unveils a full and complex wine. The grapes are harvested manually and soft pressing extracts the delicate juice slowly. The nose is a blend of exotic fruits with light spice flavours whilst the palate is supple and elegant. 22 year old vines.

From Pinot Noir grapes with outstanding ripeness and balance, this bone-dry Champagne is a great follow up to the Trophy winning 1995 vintage. Heady aromas and persistent mouthfilling flavours, this is another masterpiece from the Fleury family.

AFZ25 AOC Champagne Extra

100.20

14.50

40% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. From 30 year old vines the extra dose of Cabernet leads to polished yet powerful tones and an elegant but structured palate. A serious Provençal rosé that over delivers on quality and a “Secret” well worth discovering. Lovely seductive texture and balance. Bone dry finish with a real succulence.

Château Léoube EFC05 AOC Côtes de Provence Rouge de Léoube 2010

A biodynamic traditional method sparkling wine with a difference and comprising of 50% Chenin Blanc, 30% Chardonnay and yes, 30% Cabernet Franc! Only natural yeast is used and the wine spends two years ageing in traditional wooden pupitres and riddled using the age old method by hand. Dry but very fruit driven with ripe apple flavours, zesty acidity and a fine persistent flavour. Outside of Champagne our first French sparkling wine for many years and certainly worth the wait.

Domaine Py

EFB61 IGP d’Oc Domaine PY Vieilles

Vignes (old vines) Merlot 2012

Another outstanding addition to the ‘Pure’ range from the Brau estate, situated a few miles from the castle town of Carcassonne. Appealing aromas of black cherry, spice and pepper lead to a rich and mellow black fruits taste experience, that’s soft, developed and slightly smokey. Great varietal character and a very complete wine.

70.80

30 year old vines produce this super-concentrated but very approachable Merlot that exhibits all the right plummy black fruit flavours and soft ripe tannins. A superb-value wine that punches well above its price tag and looks the part too.

Moulin La Mondière 2012

71.88

Syrah, Grenache & Carignan are carefully selected from individual parcels, vinified and aged separately, 25% in two year old french barrels producing a wine that exhibits all those spicy “garrigue” notes. Rich peppery fruit, full bodied and great value for money.

78.60

Robert Eden – Maris EFB60

AOC Cru La liviniere Minervois Hemp House Syrah 2010

8.25 99.00

This is a blend of 85% Syrah and 15% Grenache grown on hard and soft limestone and alluvial soils. Vinification happens in a mix of concrete and conical oak foudre and it is aged for 12 months, in 30% new oak and the rest in two and three years barrels. The nose is ripe black fruits (blackcurrants, elderberries) notes alongside more spicy characteristics (pepper, herbs). The palate is very attractive with firm yet silky tannins. Aromatic, spicy with a fabulously generous weight. This wine has real impact, so you best be ready for it… once opened!

74.28

Picpoul is the grape here, grown close to the Mediterranean, from where so much of the great seafood originates that this wine complements so well. Pale gold in colour, it’s fresh and dry with citrus fruit notes and a pleasing nutty minerality. Increasingly fashionable, and a great alternative to Muscadet.

France - IGP Pays d'Herault

Domaine de Petit Roubie EFB58 IGP Pays d’Herault

A blend of 90% organic young vine Syrah with 10% biodynamic Grenache. Old School Rouge is vinified with the sole aim of preserving the freshness of fruit that the Minervois region gives us. All the fruit is estate grown, handpicked and ferments with natural yeast in natural concrete tanks. An up-front pleasure bent style, with fruit forward aromas of blackberry, black cherry, olive paste, pepper, and wild herbs to go with a medium-bodied, supple, and admirably fruited palate.

6.19

Tannat 2011

5.95

71.40

Relatively rare the Tannat grape which is of Basque origin, pops up in various vinous locations, but most famously in french ‘Madiran’, and more unusually, but successfully in Uruguay. At Petit Roubie it produces quite a powerful, dark wine with plenty of tannic structure, yet with enough ripe fruit to balance the palate. Great value and a good partner for more hearty dishes.

France - Cahors

Château Saint Didier Parnac EFB56 AOC Cahors Prieuré de Cénac Mission 2011

6.50

78.00

Grown on 21 hectares our first ever Cahors from the South West of France is a fantastic new addition to our range. The fashionable Malbec is blended with 15% Merlot to produce a very characterful spicy red that sings of the appellation. The tannins are surprisingly soft and supple for a Cahors. The well-rounded body complete with those deep smokey Malbec flavours are balanced by the Merlot nicely giving a long and persistent finish.

Chasselay

EFH10 AOC Beaujolais Quatre Saisons 2012

Château Dudon CFA21 AOC Sauternes Château Dudon 50cl 2011

11.75

141.00

After a long gap we’re really pleased to re-list another organic Sauternes of this calibre. From an independent family run estate in the Barsac area, not far from the legendary Château Yquem. Produced from yield restricted plots of Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc and a tiny amount of Muscadelle, this oak aged beauty will keep forever. Deeply honeyed and opulent, yet with bright acidity, a real treat on it’s own or to partner rich paté, blue cheese or sweet desserts.

7.09

85.08

We are delighted to have this more ‘entry level’ Beaujolais from the Chasselay family to complement their Cru Fleurie and Morgon wines. Vibrant and vivid in colour and flavour, it’s everything that young unoaked Gamay should be, with super soft berried fruits and gently earthy overtones.

Hungary - Somló Meinklang-Hungary CHU03 J10-Juhfark 2010

163.80

Hailing from one small and famous hill (extinct volcano) in Hungary, comes this very individual and special wine. Juhfark is the ancient Hungarian variety and in 2010 the wine is named J10, which is logical at least! Peachy and tropical fruit aromas lead to a rich multi-layered palate with salty, nutty minerality and lush exotic fruit impact. A wine with the ‘wow’ factor and a perfect partner with baked fish.

Since August 1, 2003, Franciacorta has been the only Italian wine not obliged to declare its DOCG appellation on the label. Franciacorta Satèn must be a blanc de blancs with only the use of Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco and in this case it is 100% Chardonnay. The Satèn style has less pressure than most traditional method sparkling wines with 4.5 atmospheres of pressure instead of 6 providing a soft delicate mousse and a rich silky (Satin) mouthfeel. Aged in barrique, mellow, dense with notes of spices, exotic fruit and vanilla.

Here we ask the wine maker for a blend of 70% Pinot Grigio and 30% Catarratto, which gives us the appeal of Pinot Grigio with a little added ‘je ne sais quoi’… In fact this native Sicilian grape, Catarratto offers a certain lemony characteristic and gives extra ‘body’ to the overall mouth feel. The Pinot Grigio used here also gives off an attractive hint of colour to the wine.

A refined and elegant dry sparkling rosé with sweet notes of dried fruits and strawberries and just the right amount of toastiness from the extended lees ageing.

BIL05

IGT Terre Siciliane Hoopoe Mountain Grillo 2012

Grillo is the most widely planted white grape in Sicily and is used to make Marsala. The Co-op oversee many hectares of organic Grillo vines – some planted in the coastal plains and some in the mountains. We tasted wines made from both areas and decided on the ‘Mountain Grillo’ to be used for this new range, as they retain more fresh acidity and have more pronounced aromas which produces a superb, modern style of white wine – perfect as an aperitif or with fish and salads.

“Fresh and aromatic with notes of nuts, toast, citrus apple and pears. Amazingly vivid on the palate with pure linear flavours of apple and pear, subtle nuts and high acidity. A taut, delightful expression of Chenin that needs more time. Dry, 95/100” Jamie Goode, www.wineanorak.com.

A fresh, fruity smooth and elegant wine with soft tannins. Made from the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinto Cão and Sousão varieties this wine just dances on the palate with zingy freshness, wild fruits and combined with a nice balancing acidity. A delicious gastronomic profile.

Superb addition to our growing number of ‘NS’ wines. Carefully hand picked and destemmed, the absence of sulphur both raises the fruity, red berry and flower aromas, keeps the colour intensity and enriches and balances the palate. Best drunk young and fresh.

Captivating wine with a big presence, from 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 48% Shiraz and 4% Merlot, with just the Shiraz receiving 12 months in 50% new and 50% year old French oak barrels. Blending was done just before bottling and now it’s nicely mature aromas are complex, with cherry, raspberry, mint and eucalyptus, leading to a juicy and smooth black fruit palate with notes of pepper and mocha.

No Added Sulphur 2012

Perfectly healthy selected grapes and meticulous winemaking, has produced a great and authentic wine with no sulphur at all added, (SODOS in Catalan relates to sulphur, so NOSODOS is ‘no sulphur’!). Made from 90% Xarello and 10% Chardonnay, this dry and clean white has lovely melon and citrus qualities with a big thread of Penedès minerality throughout. Limited production only.

7 casks of Organic Single Malt are hand selected by our Master Blender for each batch of this rare whisky. The casks are married together by hand to ensure that each batch is a unique expression of the best characters in each Single Malt. No single batch will ever be the same; each bottle carries the number of the batch that it belongs to. Our website will carry the tasting notes and the detail of the casks that went into the batch.

The estate’s organic cider is distilled in June each year, using a copper clad column still. ‘Hors D’Age’ refers to it’s ageing of at least 8 years, in Limousin oak barrels. Well balanced, smooth and persistent appley flavours sweep over the palate.

Organic Wine Our last Wine List 2012/13 heralded the news that from harvest to bottling, the process was to be certified, allowing for the addition of the term ‘Organic Wine’ on wine labels from 2012 EU vintages. The logo with white stars in a leaf shape on green or plain background for European organics, to accompany the fact on the back label.

Good news in many respects for consumers. Some producers however, prefer or choose not to advertise their organic or biodynamic status, that’s fair enough we say (though we’ll always make sure they have certification, and we hold necessary copy certificates here at the office). Being just ‘organic’ by hearsay, is not good enough for our business ethics. We think transparency and labelling are crucial. It’s relevant at a time when a recent test of 300 French wines by a highly regarded Bordeaux wine research company, revealed that 90% of wines tested (even some organic) contained traces of pesticides and/or fungicides. The sceptics may focus on the fact that a tiny number of organic wines contained contaminant traces that doubtless would have come from spray drift from neighbouring conventional farms. Well, many would fear the spread of GM

crops for the same reasons, it’s not right or fair that it happens, but it does and battles for authentic, sustainable and chemical free agriculture will doubtless continue. Customers do look for choice and reassurance of provenance. The recent horsemeat scandal has seen over an 8% rise in demand for all organic food products (not just burgers). Wine is often thought to be ‘natural anyway’, but grapes can be very heavily sprayed and if you were buying fresh grapes there’s EU rules to restrict pesticide residues, but no limits on wine itself.

Innovators in viticultural techniques, and guardians of their soil, the family simply make outstanding expressive Champagnes that win top awards. Last year we added their ‘world-first’ no added sulphur fizz called Sonate No 9, this year another really rare 100% Pinot Blanc. Sparkling Barone Pizzini See their wine on page 29 Franciacorta, near Lake Iseo, is the perfect place for making Italy’s best bubblies. “Franciacorta” is the name of the area, the production method (traditional, bottle fermentation) and also the name of the wine, Franciacorta DOCG (Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin). Barone Pizzini was founded in 1870 and is one of the oldest wineries in Franciacorta. It was also the first winery in Franciacorta to adopt organic viticultural methods. We are delighted to have introduced two new Franciacorta’s to the range and which add to the diversity of wines produced from this award-winning estate. The Satèn (meaning Silk) is the only Franciacorta obtained from only white grapes (Chardonnay) and silky soft in texture whilst the Bagnadore Riserva 2005 sits proudly at the top of the tree in terms of complexity, quality and style.

Argentina Domaine Bousquet Mendoza Organic since the vineyard’s inception in 1997, when travelling Frenchman Jean Bousquet discovered his ideal place to live and make wine. At 1200 metres in the Uco Valley, Mendoza the climate is cool, the air fresh and the water pure. These factors all help optimum grape maturation and the talented winemakers at the Domaine capture this in glass, making wines that are naturally elegant with incredible colour, beautiful fruity driven character, good structure with velvety style and a perfect sugar/acid balance. Approachable young, the wines reward further aging with purity of fruit and soft texture.

This micro wine region (800 hectares) is all on the slopes of an extinct volcano which rises from the Hungarian plain, and is crowned by the ruins of an 11th century castle. Only white wines are produced here from indigenous grapes, which show great natural acidity and salty, pure mineral characters which are hallmark to this unique soil and place.

France - Cahors

Château Saint Didier Parnac Cahors is perhaps best known as the centre of the famous AOC ‘black’ wine known since the Middle Ages and exported via Bordeaux, long before that region had developed its own viniculture industry. This 36 hectare property benefits both from the influence of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic ocean where the Malbec and Merlot vines thrive. Cahors wines are usually very robust and tannic but this new estate produces elegant and soft Malbec’s that are ready to drink in their youth. 85% Malbec and 15% Merlot.

Château Dudon This estate and castle is steeped in history and dates back to 1789. The 11 hectares surround the castle of Dudon and its park, and the average age of the vines are 29 years old. Planted with 84% Semillon, 15% Sauvignon & 1% Muscadelle the vineyards are ploughed 8 to 10 times per year. During harvest the pickers go through the vineyards, hand selecting only the ripest grapes on different days limiting the total production and focusing on quality not quantity. Each vine only produces a maximum of two to three glasses. Sweet nectar indeed!

It’s a great location for wine growing with two key veins of clay passing through the area, one at the top of the hill, and one at the foot of the slope. France - Provence Château Léoube

Seduced by Léoube’s history, it’s beautiful setting and by its potential, the Bamford family decided to buy the estate back in 1997. Combining a quality orientated and environmentally friendly approach their aim is to make wines with character. The Léoube estate spreads over four kilometres of coastline and is blessed with a superb Mediterranean climate. The region is often windswept by the Mistral, which helps keep the vines in good health and this favoured land of rosé wines produces elegant wines. Natural assets that are a happy match for Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Côtes de Provence appellation’s star varieties.

Domaine du Jas d’Esclans It’s hard not to think of Provence and Rosé together. The Jas d’Esclans pink is a blend of predominantly Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault that are macerated briefly before a light pressing and then carefully-controlled temperature fermentation. The result is a wine that has a beautiful salmon-pink colour and a dry, redcurrant and thyme palate.

Since then, the estates have passed through many generations of the same family, until in the 1990’s a group of local wine entrepreneurs, bought the estate and started to invest in the business putting people, and the environment first. Organic techniques followed and soon they expanded their horizons by investing and buying new properties in the Maremma Toscana area and in the Marche, Castelli di Jesi. With a full range of wines from three important wine regions of Italy, Barone Pizzini are a dynamic, quality driven group whose wines are enjoying increasing recognition. Here, the fifty hectare estate lies close enough to the Mediterranean to benefit from it’s cooling breezes, this coupled with its sandy loam topsoil sitting over a well drained limestone base creates a perfect healthy, organic grape growing environment. The new 2012 ‘Insieme’ Nero D’Avola No Added Sulphur is fantastic and a great follow on from 2011 which has proved hugely popular.

San Polino Montalcino A tiny 2.5 hectare estate which is all about quality rather than quantity. Well drained soils lend themselves perfectly to the Sangiovese grape used, and the non-interventionist approach to winemaking lets the true expression come out. Hand bottled, wines from this area are amongst some of Italy’s finest.

The Millton Vineyards Gisborne James and Annie Millton are amongst the most exciting, talented and passionate biodynamic winemakers in the world today. Established in 1984 in Gisborne on the east coast of North Island. In 1986 they were the first in New Zealand to attain the Bio-Gro certification, and after 28 years of biodynamic practise, they were again one of the first to qualify for Demeter certification in 2009. Their successful ‘Crazy by Nature’ wines Cosmo red (Syrah, Malbec and Viognier) and Shotberry Chardonnay are entry level, with the varietals lead by Chenin blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and a new Gewurztraminer are next. The ‘1er Cru’ range are Clos de Ste Anne, with Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and now a new Chenin too which is simply outstanding.

Walnut Block Wines Marlborough Walnut Block is the vision of two brothers – Clyde and Nigel Sowman. The Sowman family first planted the vineyard in 1996 in Marlborough’s premium Rapaura sub region. By owning the land and carefully managing the vines, they have complete control over the quality of the fruit produced. Combining their experience in viticulture and the wine industry with their passion and appreciation for fine wine, they have created their own unique range of superbly crafted Marlborough wines. Towering above the vineyard, Marlborough’s oldest walnut tree from which Walnut Block takes its name, stands in the middle of the Sauvignon Blanc vines. Over 100 years old, the tree provides a special historical focal point for the vineyard.

Richmond Plains Nelson Sauvignon that’s different from Marlborough, but no less enjoyable and benchmark Pinot Noir red. Literally ‘in the middle’ Richmond Plains Blanc de Noir is a an ‘almost-white’ wine from the red Pinot Noir grape that teases the senses as it doesn’t quite taste as you’d expect from its blush appearance! Owner Lars Jensen has recently turned the estate to biodynamics too.

They focus on the fruit-forward styles of red and all from the indigenous varieties of Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca. Stellar Western Cape Voted by Drinks Business Magazine as ‘Ethical Company of the Year’ 2013, Stellar is South Africa’s largest producer of organic wine. The vineyards are situated in the lower Olifants river basin, part of Namaqualand in the Western Cape. Committed to fair trade practises (certified by ‘Fair for Life’) the workers here have a 26% shareholding in the cellar. They are also amongst world leaders in production of ‘No Sulphur Added’ wines (below 10 ppm) which is of increasing interest to wine consumers. Vintage Roots were the first to import Stellar wines into the UK in the early days of their operation, and it’s been great to have shared in their success story.

Lazanou Wellington Valley In contrast to ‘Stellar’ this estate with less than 9 hectares of vines, must be one of South Africa’s smallest estates. Situated in Wellington, about 45 minutes drive from Cape Town, this small but perfectly formed farm also has an olive grove, cow pastures, earth dam and bird sanctuary. These blends are superb, and well worth trying.

Waverley Hills Tulbagh In 2000, Waverley Hills decided to enter the organic wine market. Since then a total of 30 hectares of vineyards and olive groves have been planted and cultivated organically. All grapes and olives used for Waverley Hills’ products are cultivated on the estate, which is run and owned by the Du Toit family who have over 40 years of wine industry experience. The name ‘Waverley Hills’ originates from the estate’s location as it is situated opposite the premises of the original Waverley Wool dye-works. Some of the original buildings where they produced blankets during the Anglo-Boer and First World Wars are still in existence today. As you enter Waverley Hills you will drive past rolling organic vineyards and olive groves – their white ducks, that control the snails in the vineyards, might also greet you too.

Albet I Noya Penedès See their Cavas on page 16 The Albet I Noya family was established at this estate well over 100 years ago. Organic methods were introduced in the late 70’s and since then the family have worked tirelessly to improve their land and build new cellars and facilities, as well as experiment with forgotten varieties, and more recently making innovative No Sulphur Added wines such as the new NOSODOS white below. The estate’s top red ‘Reserva Marti’ is a blend of Tempranillo, Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot and is aged for two years in French oak.
