The Special Olympics Delaware Empowerment Conference is a day of empowerment for Special Olympics athletes and their family members, friends and caregivers. The conference offers the athletes interactive sessions that promote selfconfidence and independence. Family sessions feature professionals who share their experience in helping families on the journey of loving and caring for individuals with disabilities. REGISTER NOW TO ATTEND! This jam-packed day will bring hundreds of Special Olympics athletes, families and friends together to learn about important topics, discover opportunities for self-improvement ... AND have fun!

EMPOWERMENT CONFERENCE SCHEDULE 10:00 - 11:00 am

SIGN-IN and BRUNCH Doors open at 10am. Please arrive on me to sign-in. Brunch will be available for registered parcipants only and ends promptly at 11:00 am. WELCOME AND KEYNOTE Meet Keynote Speaker Karen Gaffney, a movaonal speaker and selfadvocate who travels around the world to speak about overcoming limitaons and about what can be accomplished with posive expectaons.

With compassion and understanding, expert sexuality educator, Terri Couwenhoven, discusses the unique hurdles that individuals with disabilities face in this area. January 8, 2012 . . join us! Registration for the athlete workshop sessions is open to Special Olympics athletes ages 13 and older. These sessions will run from 11:30am - 2:30pm with breaks in between. Athletes may choose three (3) workshops from the list below:

AT H L E T E W O R K S H O P S ART FOR THE BRAIN Zen-doodling is a form of art that uses doodling and patterns to help you calm your mind and create beautiful designs. No drawing or art experience is needed!

LEARN BASIC FIRST AID Interactive session by the Newark Fire Department will introduce Special Olympics athletes to the basics of home first aid. Tips on how to handle minor injuries, how to build a first-aid kit, etc., will be just some of the topics covered.

JUST DANCE! Burn calories, stay fit, and enjoy a fun workout all while having a blast with your favorite songs. Raise the roof and rock it out with the West Chester University crew!

Family sessions are open to ALL registered family members of individuals with special needs of all ages. Sessions will run from 11:30am - 2:30pm with breaks.

FA M I LY S E S S I O N S BODIES, BOUNDARIES AND HUMAN SEXUALITY - (with Q&A session) This workshop is designed to help parents and guardians become more comfortable and confident addressing sexuality issues that commonly surface among people with intellectual disabilities, as well as understand roles they play in supporting sexual learning. A Q&A session will be held after the break. Presenter: Terri Couwenhoven, M.S., Clinic Coordinator for the Down Syndrome Clinic of Wisconsin at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin

BE MORE THAN AN ATHLETE ... Do more than compete - find out what it takes to be part of the game by learning about First Steps to being a Special Olympics Coach/Team Volunteer, Official or Camp Counselor! This is a unique Athlete Leadership opportunity. Select from three separate training sessions (see Registration form.)

G-L-A-M-O-R-OUS Get over your “bad hair day” and let Currie’s Salon take care of you! Cathy Stiles-deNest and staffmembers of Currie’s will inspire, motivate and help you create a positive first impression. Learn some valuable do’s and don’ts of personal care and get your “glam” on!

CAN WE TALK? (Parenting Forum) Casual roundtable discussions intended as an open forum to help parents and families speak candidly about the struggles and joys of living with a child or family member with special needs. Moderator: Teesie Bonk Down Syndrome Association of Delaware

INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATE WITH CONFIDENCE YOU CAN DO IT - communicate with confidence! Every person has the potential to become a good communicator. Whether shy or expressive, Special Olympics athletes can develop effective speaking skills with the help of experienced leaders from the Toastmasters Club. (This is designed as an introductory session to the 8-week course offered by Special Olympics Delaware.)

EMERGENCY 911 Emergencies don't happen very often. But when they do, you want to get help fast. This is another interactive session by the Newark Fire Department that will give participants a greater understanding of what to do in case of emergency situations.

ZUMBA Zumba is a dance fitness program based on international and latin rhythms such as salsa, cha-cha, samba, African, Bollywood, hip-hop and much, much more!! Who can Zumba? Everyone can Zumba! So come and join the fun!

DOLLARS AND SEN$E A penny saved is a penny earned - REALLY! This workshop by the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) will help empower participants with an understanding of basic money management skills.

Meet our Guest Speaker: Karen Gaffney Karen is president of the Karen Ganey Foundaon, a non-proďŹ t organizaon that is dedicated to the journey to full inclusion for people with Down syndrome and other disabilies. Karen is a dedicated and accomplished swimmer. In 2001 Karen completed a relay swim across the English Channel. She has since completed a number of swims across San Francisco Bay and the "Escape From Alcatraz" relay triathlons. This past year she took on a new challenge ... she made history as she swam 9 miles across the waters of Lake Tahoe.

PLUS! Project UNIFY Youth Leadership Conference SODE will also be hosting a Project UNIFY Youth Leadership event on the same day as our Empowerment Conference. This event will bring Delaware high school students together to empower them to make a difference in advocating for social change within their schools and communities, thereby helping to foster greater acceptance and inclusion for people with intellectual disabilities.
