THEN AND NOW In a blink of an eye, WE Local has doubled. From an initial offering of two U.S. and two global conferences in 2017, WE Local has expanded to five U.S. conferences as well as global conferences and more than 10 roundtables and seminars globally in 2018. The WE Local Advisory Board (LAB) and five WE Local Host Committees (LHCs) welcome you to WE Local 2018. The 2018 WE Local events will showcase the most prominent (and local!) industry leaders and organizations, exceptional breakout session speakers (evaluated and chosen by SWE members), networking galore and an outreach event for middle- and high-school students — all in two days. We hope you take the opportunity to explore one (or all five!) conferences. WE Local is your conference to connect with speakers and attendees from your part of the country…and beyond. The WE Local conferences were created to bring the excitement, energy and learning environment of SWE’s annual conference directly to our members’ backyards. In this time of transitions, LAB and LHCs are working to create conferences that feel familiar and pleasant while also incorporating new and exciting elements. Feedback from the 2017 conferences in Pittsburgh, PA and San Jose, CA showed WE Local where we excelled (Keynote Speakers, SWENext DesignLab and breakout session variety), and where we needed more focus (Career Fair, Volunteer Opportunities and the overall agenda layout). The feedback from LAB and LHC members, attendees, speakers and sponsors has been used throughout the planning process for 2018 for continuous improvements. After all, WE Local is meant for you to Meet

Locally. Learn Socially.

As such, we hope you’ll make new local connections that can continue long past the end of the conferences.

ABOUT WE Local is a Society of Women Engineers (SWE) program that brings together participants in all stages of their collegiate and professional journey. The conferences are hosted around the globe, allowing women in engineering and technology to connect through professional development workshops, inspirational speakers and networking opportunities, right in their backyard.

8

A GLOBAL HISTORY In an effort to reach women in engineering and technology wherever and whenever they are, SWE has expanded Society professional development, education and networking across the globe. The SWE board had a vision of globalization – not just geographically, but professionally – at all stages of women engineers’ careers whether that meant collegiates, young professionals, senior leaders, retirees and everything in between. So, SWE began down a path of true global expansion. After thorough market evaluation, SWE identified how the Society can better serve women engineers on a global scale and which markets would be a good place to start. We began with roundtables and seminars in key markets, having conversations with women engineers as well as human resources managers, recruitment managers, and leaders in diversity and inclusion. These roundtables informed programs that would meet our audience’s needs locally, and we have since expanded into full conferences. WE Local Global brings professional development, education and networking to women engineers at all stages of their career in regions that extend beyond the U.S. A global community of support among women engineers is key to understanding cultural differences throughout the profession and working toward our mission of equality in engineering.

ROADMAP TO WE LOCAL NORTH AMERICA

SWE Headquarters (HQ) approaches volunteer leadership with the idea of leading the coordination and execution of SWE region conferences in North America.

Taskforce establishes a plan to implement and launch the WE Local program model.

SWE Board of Directors creates a Region Conferences Taskforce comprised of former region governors, board members and HQ staff. Taskforce works together to lay the groundwork for the new structure of region conferences.

The WE Local Advisory Board (LAB) and the WE Local Host Committee (LHC) are established by the Taskforce.

Each host city has an LHC comprised of 10 – 15 SWE members who support HQ with the execution of the WE Local conference by providing the "voice" of the local member. The LAB and HQ strategize on long-term strategy for the WE Local program including conference improvements and programming.

WE Local program officially launches in 2017.

GLOBAL ROUNDTABLES Global Roundtables SWE’s Global Roundtables give women engineers across the globe an opportunity to gather and discuss how we can work together to make the engineering workforce a more inclusive environment. At each roundtable and seminar, hundreds of women engineers, human resources managers, recruitment managers, leaders in diversity and inclusion, and leaders in academia discuss gender bias, diversity and inclusion, unconscious bias, and gender diversity. These roundtables inform SWE how we can meet our audience’s needs locally, and globally.
