“Spring is God’s way of reminding us that nothing is truly lost, only waiting to bloom again.”
Once again we have just “sprung forward” as they say for Daylight Savings Time... “Spring Forward and Fall Back”... and I still wonder why we can’t just leave the clocks alone. It signals that the days will be growing longer and the warmth of the sun will linger a little longer each evening. We find ourselves at the threshold of a new season—one that welcomes renewal, celebration and inspiration. The arrival of spring is more than just a transition in the calendar or an hour forward on our clocks—it’s a shift in mindset. Spring Break is our first signal that summer isn’t far behind—and with the change of season also comes a transition in our homes, our wardrobes, and our calendars as they all come alive with the energy of renewal.

In the Bible, “home” is often used to represent a place of dwelling, security and belonging, with a prominent verse being Psalm 127:1 which states, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain,” signifying that a true home is built with God’s presence and blessing.
Diving into the concept of a home in the Bible reveals a tapestry far beyond mere bricks and wood. It’s where the heart finds solace and spirits are nurtured. This sacred notion, contrasts sharply with a modern view of home as a physical space or investment. The biblical perspective intertwines spiritual growth with community bonds, and divine presence of the lord—a sanctuary not made by human hands, but crafted through faith and fellowship. From Genesis to Revelation, ‘home’ under the lord is more than walls— it’s an enduring symbol of protection, love and eternal promise. As we explore layers within scripture, we uncover timeless truths that challenge today’s transient idea of what constitutes a true haven.
The overall concept of “home” in the Bible encompasses more than physical dwelling— it represents a place of spiritual sanctuary and a foundation for nurturing faith. Building a true Christian home involves intentional practices that align with biblical teachings, fostering an environment where love, peace and worship thrive. Reflecting on the eternal home promised in scripture can inspire us to cultivate our earthly homes as reflections of God’s kingdom, emphasizing both hope and spiritual growth. Nurturing faith at home is crucial, as it is often within the family unit that individuals first learn about God’s love and the teachings of Jesus Christ.
The Bible mentions home many times. These verses show us what home meant long ago. For example, Psalm 127:1 says that a house must be built by the Lord, God, to last. In Proverbs 24:3-4, a wise person is said to build their home through understanding and knowledge of the Lord. These homes were not just buildings, but places filled with love and God’s presence. People like Abraham saw their tents as gifts from God. They felt safe and loved there. In the Bible, a home was more than walls and a roof. It was where people grew closer to God. A family could learn about faith together at home.
The idea of home has changed over time, but still matters today just like it did back then. Homes back then were simple places where families lived together closely. Even today, Christians see their homes as special spots for living out their faith every day.
The Bible also tells us why we have homes— they are for sharing love and being united with others. They are spaces where people can pray and worship together privately or with family members. The Bible views the home as a haven for rest. It’s where we recharge after long days. In scripture, rest is not just sleep, but also peace and renewal. This kind of rest often happens at home where we find quiet moments away from the world’s noise. We can sit still, pray, or read quietly. These acts bring us closer to feeling rested like the Bible teaches.
Gratitude is central in creating a home that reflects Christian values. The Bible teaches us to be thankful for all things, including our
homes. When we express gratitude for the shelter and comfort we have, it helps bring peace to our living spaces. A thankful heart turns every meal into a feast and every house into a home. Verses like Thessalonians 5:18 tell us, “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” This suggests that being grateful should be part of everyday life at home. It can turn simple moments into special memories.
Our homes on earth are where we live, laugh, and grow. But they are different from our eternal home in heaven. The Bible says that heaven is a place of joy with no pain or sadness. It’s made by God and lasts forever. In our earthly houses, we can remember what the Bible teaches about heaven. We should love and help each other like Jesus does. This makes our life here better and prepares us for our heavenly home.
The Bible has lots of lessons about family life. It tells parents and children how to act with steadfast love and respect. Applying these teachings starts with love and kindness at home. Parents should teach their kids right from wrong using stories from the Bible. For example, Proverbs 22:6 says to guide children on the right path so when they’re older, they’ll stay on it. This means teaching them good habits early on.
Exploring the concept of home through the Bible’s lens, it’s clear that a home grounded in faith isn’t just walls and a roof—it’s where love and spiritual growth thrive. Think of your home as a launchpad for life’s missions, a cozy nook to nurture belief, and a hub for warm welcomes. Your dwelling is more than an address—it mirrors Heaven’s embrace.
Roll out the welcome mat and make your home a beacon of hope and hospitality. Let your space echo with laughter and learning about God’s love. Open your door wide— there’s a world out there ready for the heart you’ve built within your home’s walls.

RIPE READS BOOK REVIEWS BY SANDY LOWE
Second Son by author Pamela Taylor immerses the reader directly into the world of Alfred—second son of the heir to throne—at the dawning of the Renaissance. While the setting of the book is not specifically stated, a feel of the British Isles prevails.
At the beginning of the story, Alfred has no great expectations for his life. He does not expect to ever lead his people as king. While he also doesn’t plan to enter the ministry, as many second sons of this age, he does hope for opportunities to serve. But fate and his grandfather, the king, have plans for him not revealed until much later in the novel. As a young man Alfred, has the common of experience of training for knighthood. He builds relationships that not only entertain in the early years, but develop into friendships that will support Alfred’s exploits and even save his life.
The whole court appropriately celebrates Alfred’s 18th birthday and, shortly thereafter, he marries. His wife, Gwen, becomes a fit partner for this hero—a man of both character and commitment, even at this early age.
While on a commission from his grandfather, Alfred finds himself captured, in chains and half-starved by the son of one of his family’s enemies. His captor hopes for a ransom and for every day he doesn’t receive it he drags Alfred farther and farther from home. This journey and the struggle to attain his freedom make up most of the story.
In addition to transporting the reader directly to day-to-day Renaissance life, Pamela also opens a window into the thoughts and feelings of her characters. As readers, we share their concerns, their fears and their loves. The depth of research the author has put into these stories give them a feel of real settings and real people living their lives where they find themselves. Alfred’s family—except for his very rebellious older brother—are all admirable, well-intentioned leaders, doing their best to care for their people.
This first volume and the additional eight in the series provide an escape into a fascinating historical era where we walk alongside characters that we can easily relate to and understand.
“Historical fiction lovers enjoy this real life Game of Thrones, a tale of knightly adventure.”

Celebrating the sights, sounds and culture of India, the 6th annual Festival of Joy is set for Saturday, April 26, at Klyde Warren Park located at 2012 Woodall Rodgers Freeway in Dallas. The family-friendly event kicks off at 11am with a vibrant parade, dancing, music and live performances throughout the day. Presented by acclaimed East Dallas restaurant Kalachandji’s, the Festival of Joy brings together thousands of families, adults and dignitaries from across North Texas for a fun-filled day, teeming with bright colors, beautiful flowers and interactive exhibits focused on exploration and joy. Festival goers seeking culinary delights can enjoy a free vegetarian feast and a variety of ethnic vegetarian foods available for purchase.
The event culminates with an evening concert at 7pm featuring The Mayapuris, a vibrant traveling party of conscious musicians. Raised in the mystic traditions of ancient India, the Mayapuris fuse the soul stirring experience of mantra music with exceptional musicianship in both eastern and western styles. They have toured across six continents propelled by their thunderous rhythm and soaring vocals.
“The Festival of Joy is a reminder that even in challenging times, hope, faith and love have the power to transform our lives,” said Nityananda Das Adhikari of the Radha Kalachandji Temple. “It’s a celebration of the choice we all have to live with compassion, peace and connection to the world around us. At its core, the festival is about fostering a deeper sense of unity, both within ourselves and the universe. We invite everyone to experience this incredible gathering, where hearts come together in harmony.” The Festival of Joy, also celebrated as Ratha Yatra or Festival of Chariots, has its roots in the ancient Indian tradition. It has been observed annually for more than 3,000 years in the holy city of Jagannatha Puri in the South Indian state of Orissa, making it the world’s longest-running street festival. It is now held in major cities worldwide, including New York City’s Fifth Avenue and London’s Piccadilly Circus.
The festival starts at 11am with a welcome ceremony at Klyde Warren Park, followed by a parade at 11:30am through the Dallas Arts District, returning to the park at 1:30pm. Hundreds of festivalgoers, pilgrims and faith leaders joyously pull the colorful chariot carrying the sacred deities of Jagannatha, Subhadra and Balarama along the route. Hundreds more dance, sing and play traditional musical instruments. Devotees believe that if they get the opportunity to pull the ropes of the giant chariot carrying Lord Krishna, known as Jagannatha or the Lord of the Universe, they can obtain eternal service to the Lord in the spiritual world. After the procession returns to Klyde Warren Park, guests can enjoy a free vegetarian feast, live stage entertainment, sample delicious regional Indian street foods, shop at an ethnic clothing bazaar, and explore exhibits celebrating the spiritual heart of India. From Ayurveda and yoga to traditional crafts, try-a-sari, mehndi,”ask-a-monk” sessions and more, attendees can immerse themselves in the rich cultural offerings of India.

Spring is the season of renewal, making it the perfect time to refresh both your home and outdoor spaces. As the days grow longer and nature comes to life, it’s the ideal moment to declutter, update your décor, and even take on larger renovation projects. Whether you’re brightening up interiors with fresh colors, reorganizing for a cleaner feel, or transforming your patio and garden into a welcoming retreat, spring offers the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into every corner of your home. Let’s explore how to make the most of the season’s energy and create a space that feels revitalized.
Owning your dream home is a dream come true. But as time goes by, even a space you once loved can be in need of upgrading to best fit your evolving life. Spaces that previously felt perfect may now call for thoughtful upgrades to enhance function, comfort and style. When you are undergoing a major renovation, what you need is a partner to walk with you from the beginning to the end.
That’s where Stately Design & Renovation steps in. Led by owner-founder Rick Baker, this trusted team specializes in full-home transformations, additions, and custom kitchen and bath renovations while bringing expertise, integrity and a passion for craftsmanship to every project. Since founding in 2007, Stately Design & Renovation has completed over 800 projects, earning a reputation for excellence. While the company has long been known for large-scale renovations, they’ve expanded their capacity to take on kitchens and bathrooms with the same meticulous planning, attention-todetail, and trusted trade partners used in their full-home projects.
Discover what clients have come to expect from Stately Design & Renovation’s proven process and meet the team committed to Designing Dreams.
“A renovation isn’t just an expense — it’s an investment,” admits Rick. “Whether it’s improving long-term livability or increasing resale value, our goal is to create spaces that truly enhance our clients’ lives.” What sets Stately Design & Renovation apart is their commitment to collaboration and transparency. “We believe in a team approach, guiding clients through every phase from design to construction,” Rick explains. “Nearly all of our work comes from referrals — and we take pride in being the company homeowners return to when they’re ready for their next project.”

A seamless renovation begins long before the first hammer swings — it starts with a solid plan.
At Stately Design & Renovation, they believe the design phase, often called “preconstruction,” sets the foundation for an exceptional experience in every stage of your project. Their triedand-true process is thorough, intentional and built to ensure stunning results. They follow a proven approach that ensures accountability and drives the project forward to fulfill dreams.
Before diving into project details, Stately begins with an initial meeting because great projects are built on great partnerships. Design and renovation requires a team that works in sync—and trust is the cornerstone. If it’s not the right fit for both parties— whether due to budget constraints or their current workload—they’re happy to refer clients to trusted partners who may be a better match from their network of reliable professionals they confidently recommend.
Once both parties are aligned, the first home meeting is where the magic begins. The team will define the scope of work, identify the problems the client is trying to solve, and whether the solution lies in refining what exists or creating something entirely new. Then from this discussion, a conceptual budget range is crafted to set clear expectations.
Project budgets will typically fall into one of three different categories:
• At or below the expected project investment—great news!
• Right in line with the estimated financial plan—perfect!
• Above the investment level—this means adjustments are needed, so the scope can either be refined to align with the budget, or the budget can be expanded to bring the vision to life.
Unlike contractors who offer free estimates or compete with bids, Stately Design & Renovation develops and prices projects with meticulous detail. Renovations require extensive planning—from the architectural drawings and engineering to designs and material selections. That’s why, once both
parties decide to move forward together, a Preconstruction Services Agreement is signed—committing time and resources to bringing the project to life with accuracy.
When the project cost is presented, it’s a single, clear number—no surprises, no gimmicks, and no sudden upcharges. The only time the cost changes is if the client decides to make changes. Stately Design & Renovation doesn’t operate with bait-andswitch pricing or profit from change orders. If something is included in the scope of work, it’s included in the cost. Period.
Stately’s process isn’t just about completing a project—it’s about crafting a stress-free experience, where trust, transparency and craftsmanship come together seamlessly. At Stately Design & Renovation, they don't bid on projects—they develop specific projects for homeowners and then they price them.
Once the vision is finalized and the budget is set, it is time to bring the client’s dream to life. Stately’s transition from planning to construction is seamless, intentional, and designed to keep the experience stress-free.
Laying the Groundwork for Success Before even a single nail is hammered, every detail is ensured to be in place. Once the final scope and costs are approved, a construction contract is presented for review. Then, the real work begins. A job start meeting introduces the project manager to the job, where questions are asked to fully grasp the client’s vision. Permits are submitted, materials are ordered and preparation gets underway.
Before demolition starts, extra steps are taken to protect the areas that remain untouched—think layers of plastic, meticulous taping, and careful covering. Then with a solid plan in place, the transformation begins.
Executing the Build with Precision The project manager is at the helm, overseeing every aspect of construction while staying in close communication with the office team. Each trade partner is briefed before beginning their work, ensuring that every detail aligns with the overall plan. No invoice gets signed until the work meets Stately Design & Renovation’s standards. As the project nears completion, the client walks through the space with the project manager, identifying final touches needing attention. The goal is to complete the punch list before the client officially moves back into the new space, so all that’s left to do is for them to enjoy it.
Quality Control and Excellence in Every Detail At Stately Design & Renovation, quality is not just a checklist—it is a shared responsibility between the team and the client. They believe in catching and correcting mistakes as they go, rather than waiting until the end of the project. However, even the smallest imperfections matter. If something does not meet the client’s expectations, the team is committed to making it right. On the rare occasion there’s a disagreement over a quality issue, the company follows Residential Construction Performance Guidelines set by the National Association of Home Builders. Since inception, Stately has never had to reference this document—any issues have been easily resolved.

STATELY DESIGN & RENOVATION
At Stately Design & Renovation, they believe that excellence is built on a strong foundation—one of precision, reflection, and constant refinement. To their team, this process isn’t just a series of steps— it’s the blueprint for success. Married to his high school sweetheart, Janet, for over 41 years, he takes pride in family, faith and hard work. Their daughter, Amanda, works in marketing after graduating from Baylor University, while their son, Brandon, is an Oral Maxillofacial Surgery resident. When you’re ready to transform your home—they’re ready to talk! Now is the perfect time to create something extraordinary.
“As soon as we sat down with Rick, we knew we need not contact anyone else. Like with any renovation, there were little surprises that popped up. But anytime they did, Justin already had a solution for us. Stately Design exceeded any expectations we had. The amount of care, attention, and considerations for our home, even our pets, is beyond anything we could have expected.”
“We were very much a team; this was our project. I got to know the subcontractors and vendors and had wonderful experiences with all of them. Before we hired Stately, we’d talked to other contractors, but we didn’t get the family vibe and open communication we got from Rick, Justin and Adam. There was never any doubt we were their number one priority and the work they did was beyond anything we could have hoped for!”
— KELLER RESIDENT
“With any large construction project, there will be things that go wrong. When they did, we never worried. Justin was right there making it right. Often, we didn’t even know there was a problem until he’d already addressed it. He communicated with us every step of the way, so we always knew what to expect next. And we never felt like we weren’t his number one priority.”

James Landscaping, Inc. has spent nearly two decades bringing a loyal client’s vision to life, most recently transforming this once barren, shade-covered area into a lush and inviting retreat.
For nearly two decades, one of their most loyal clients has entrusted the team at James Landscaping, Inc. with enhancing her expansive property—a partnership that began in June 2008. Over the years, they have designed and installed various landscape elements tailored to her vision—ensuring both beauty and functionality. In 2017, she joined James Landscaping’s Horticultural Services program, where they provide organic fertilizer three times a year, maintain garden beds through seasonal weeding and trimming, and refresh the decomposed granite in the homeowner’s flagstone areas as needed.
One of the most remarkable transformations on her property was a nearly 6,000-square-foot area filled with majestic shade trees where traditional grass simply wouldn’t thrive. Seeking a solution that would bring life to the space while remaining low-maintenance, she requested a landscape design featuring shadeloving plants, inviting pathways, and a peaceful sitting area. To achieve this vision, they incorporated expansive groundcover such as Asian Jasmine, Texas Sedge and Creeping Jenny—creating a lush, textured carpet beneath the trees. A thoughtfully designed flagstone sitting area, complete with a custom bench, offers a tranquil retreat. Two distinct flagstone paths lead to this serene space—one that’s composed of stepping stones and the other set in decomposed granite for a natural, flowing aesthetic.
For added interest, James Landscaping introduced a diverse selection of shade-loving perennials, including ferns, wood violets, and Giant Ligularia (aka Giant Leopard Plant), ensuring vibrant greenery throughout the seasons. A designated bulb garden now features stunning daffodils and amaryllis—providing bursts of color in the spring. To complete the transformation, they incorporated elegant shade trees like Japanese Maple, Pink Dogwood and Redbud—enhancing both the beauty and biodiversity of the landscape.
This beautiful project is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and expert craftsmanship—turning a once-challenging space into a breathtaking oasis that thrives in the shade. The James Landscaping team is honored to continue their partnership with this client and they look forward to maintaining and enhancing her landscape for many years to come. When you’re ready to transform trouble spots into stunning spaces—the solutions are just one call away.
The playroom just might just be the most essential space in a home with children. You may be thinking, “What about the kitchen, bathrooms, living areas?” and that’s exactly our point!
Without a dedicated playroom, toys end up scattered literally everywhere. Any parent or grandparent knows that without this designated space, toys seem to take over the entire house — multiplying as if by magic.
A well-designed playroom should spark creativity and curiosity, but stay practical, organized, and easy to keep tidy. While décor and color choices are a matter of personal preference, this article will provide creative inspiration along with smart storage solutions to help keep it functional and clutterfree. Regain your living spaces with a smart playroom design.
Designating specific zones in the playroom can enhance focus and make organization easier. Creating clear areas to use for various activities encourages engagement while keeping clutter under control. A craft station with a child-sized desk and easily accessible storage can hold supplies like paper, crayons, and glue, making it easy for kids to find and put away materials. A reading nook with cushions, blankets, and a small bookshelf provides a cozy spot for quiet time, while a canopy or tent adds a touch of magic. For imaginative play, a pretend-play area with a playhouse, kitchen set, or dress-up clothes sparks creativity. A building zone for LEGO, blocks, or trains supports problem-solving.
A well-designed playroom should prioritize safety while creating a fun and engaging space for your child. Ensuring all elements are child-friendly can prevent accidents and provide peace-of-mind. One safety feature is child-safe blinds that eliminate any risk of entanglement. Opt for cordless blinds or those with safety mechanisms to prevent potential hazards. Choosing blinds that have playful patterns or bright colors can also add a cheerful touch, making the space feel more inviting. Consider soft, padded flooring to cushion falls, secure heavy furniture to wall to prevent tipping, and use rounded-edge protectors on sharp corners. Installing outlet covers is also essential for a safe playroom.
While many areas of the home lean toward subtle and understated designs, a playroom is the perfect space to embrace bold colors and imaginative décor. A vibrant room can stimulate creativity, boost energy, and make the space feel more engaging for your child. Brightly colored paints and wallpapers can bring the room to life. A chalkboard or white board wall is another fun addition, allowing children to express creativity freely. Consider multi-colored storage bins, patterned rugs, colorful furnishings and cheerful cushions to add layers of vibrancy. A canopy or play tent in bold hues, string lights, or a garland of fabric flags can introduce a whimsical touch, making the space feel magical and inviting.
Wall murals like jungle landscapes, outer space scenes or enchanted forests instantly transform a playroom to a world of adventure. These larger-than-life designs spark creativity, encouraging children to imagine themselves exploring a dense rainforest, embarking on a space mission, or discovering an underwater kingdom — all from the safety and comfort of home. For an extra touch of whimsy, consider adding 3D elements like glow-in-the-dark stars, textured tree decals, or removable wall stickers that can be rearranged. String lights, themed shelves, or even small props like a telescope in a space-themed room or even some artificial vines accenting a jungle-theme can add life-like fun and fuel imaginative play.
A well-designed playroom relies on smart organization to keep clutter at bay. Invest in plenty of storage solutions like drawers or cupboard — and boxes to keep shelves and floor space tidy. Soft bins and canvas bags are great for easy access, allowing children to grab their favorite toys while making cleanup simpler. Tidying up after a fun day of play can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to fall entirely on you. Encouraging children to help fosters responsibility and reinforces that the playroom is their special space to care for. Choosing bright, fun storage options — like baskets shaped like animals or rocket ships — can make any cleanup more enjoyable for all.
Lighting is a key element in a playroom that shapes the atmosphere and ensues that each area is well-lit for safe, enjoyable activities. Bright, even lighting is essential for playtime, reading, and crafts, allowing children to fully engage without straining their eyes or risking injury. Overhead lights plus adjustable desk lamps and floor lamps can help illuminate different zones, making sure every corner of the room is both functional and inviting. LED lights shaped like clouds, hot air balloons, or twinkling stars can bring a dreamy, magical touch. String lights, glowing moon or animalshaped nightlights, or even neon signs in playful designs can create true enchantment.
Having plenty of soft furnishings like chairs, cushions, blankets, and plush toys scattered throughout the playroom can create a warm and inviting environment. These soft textures not only contribute to the room’s aesthetic, but also provide a sensory experience that can soothe and comfort your little one. The tactile feel of soft fabrics, along with the warmth and coziness they bring, makes the playroom feel like a sanctuary for imaginative play. Having a small tent is a little hideaway in the playroom that can make nap time feel like an extension of the fun — creating a space that feels just as exciting for playtime as it is comfy for a story or even a little slumber!
No matter how hard you try to keep the new playroom neat and tidy, some messes are inevitable. Whether it's paint splatters from a creative art session, spilled juice during snack time, or muddy footprints from an outdoor adventure, accidents are bound to happen. It's best to design the space with practical, easy-to-clean materials that can handle the wear-and-tear of daily play. Opt for washable rugs and playmats that can be quickly wiped down or tossed into the washing machine. Removable, machine-washable sofa covers are a lifesaver for seating areas. Water and stain-resistant materials for cushions, bean bags, and wallpaper can help to keep it tidy.
DFW Humane Society is working hard to help dogs and cats find homes. The story of the DFW Humane Society is a legacy of love. For more than six decades, the DFW Humane Society has been a beacon of hope for homeless pets in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. What began as a small community effort in 1960 blossomed into an officially incorporated nonprofit in 1967, solidifying its mission to provide second chances to animals in need. The nonprofit organization pioneers a movement that’s changed thousands of lives.
FOUNDED IN 1967, DFW HUMANE SOCIETY IS A NONPROFIT, NO-KILL ANIMAL SHELTER DEDICATED TO GIVING NEGLECTED, UNWANTED PETS A SECOND CHANCE IN LIFE THROUGH ADOPTION. EACH YEAR, THEY RESCUE OVER 900 PETS AND PROVIDE DAILY CARE, FOOD AND ENRICHMENT UNTIL THEY FIND THEIR PERFECT HUMAN MATCH. WITH NO FEDERAL OR STATE FUNDING, THEIR PETS RELY SOLELY ON CARING PEOPLE LIKE YOU TO FUND OPERATIONS.
The DFW Humane Society, established in 1967, is a nonprofit, no-kill animal shelter located in Irving, Texas. Their mission is to provide neglected and unwanted pets with a second chance through adoption. Each year, the organization rescues over 900 pets, offering them daily care, food, and enrichment until they find their forever homes. Notably, DFW Humane Society operates without state or federal funding, relying entirely on donations from compassionate individuals. This 501c3 aims to give all pets a long, full and healthy life full of love in their forever homes with loving people that make them a part of their family.
Back in 2017, the DFW Humane Society celebrated its 50th anniversary with The Black Collar Affair—a special event that honored its journey and unwavering dedication to animal welfare in-andaround the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. Over the years, the local nonprofit has rescued and rehomed thousands of pets—each one a living testament to the power of compassion and community support. In the eight years since that
celebration, their commitment to helping animals find loving homes has only grown stronger with the increasing need.
Fueled by the generosity of supporters, the DFW Humane Society continues to evolve. One of its latest initiatives invites all animal lovers to become annual members—helping to ensure that every pet receives the care, shelter and love they deserve. Memberships help fund
everything from vaccinations to daily necessities—allowing the no-kill shelter to expand its impact. In addition to daily care, they maintain a restricted fund, the Guardian Angel fund, that allows DFW Humane Society to rescue injured and sick pets and arrange for any necessary medical treatments so they can live a full, long, and healthy life. On top of that, they also actively engage in nationwide fundraising effort —recently participating in a friendly competition with shelters
across the country to raise crucial funds for all of their four-legged residents. Creativity and commitment drive their approach, making a difference one paw at a time.
The heart of the DFW Humane Society lies in its volunteers. Whether it’s walking dogs, socializing cats, assisting at their adoption events, or helping out with daily operations, there are plenty of ways to get involved. Volunteers must complete a fourhour orientation, typically held on the first Saturday of each month, where they’ll learn about shelter procedures, pet care, and how to best support the organization’s mission. These new recruits learn the ropes of shelter operations, animal care, and adoption services. These dedicated individuals play a crucial role in ensuring that every pet receives the attention and support needed to find a forever home.
Beyond hands-on help, the shelter also advocates for responsible pet ownership. With studies revealing that 60% of the microchips in shelter animals contain outdated information, they emphasize the importance of keeping pet microchips current—helping lost pets reunite with their families faster.
Animal lovers can also become valued members of the DFW Humane Society family and play a vital role in providing
homeless pets a second chance. An annual membership directly supports lifesaving care, ensuring animals in need receive the shelter, medical attention, and love they deserve. Become a valued member of the DFW Humane Society family and help them put a paw print in your heart—your gift makes a real and lasting impact:
• $250 – Provides rabies vaccines for 20 shelter pets
• $500 – Covers a full year of care for one pet
• $1,000 – Funds 360 heartworm tests
• $5,000 – Keeps the shelter lights on for an entire year
• $10,000 – Supports a year of care for 20 shelter pets
As a DFWHS Member, you’ll receive a quarterly newsletter featuring resident spotlights, any upcoming events, and their exclusive behind-the-scenes updates from the shelter. Your annual membership will directly support lifesaving care and make you a hero for so many animals in need.
If you’re passionate about animal welfare, but unable to adopt or volunteer, donating is another meaningful way to help. As a 501c3 nonprofit, DFW Humane Society
relies entirely on donations to fund its lifesaving work. Every contribution goes directly toward the care and well-being of homeless pets.
Every homeless dog and cat has a story— many have faced hunger, loneliness, and uncertainty, waiting for someone to give them a second chance. Offering them a loving forever home transforms their lives in ways beyond measure. A once-scared pup learns to trust again, a shy cat discovers the joy of a warm lap, and a neglected animal finally feels safe and cherished. In return, they bring unconditional love, companionship, and a bond that lasts a lifetime. Adoption doesn’t just change their world—it changes yours, too, filling your home with gratitude, loyalty, and the purest form of love.
For adoption details, volunteer sign-ups, annual membership information, and the donation opportunities, visit their website. Follow FW Humane Society on their social media for the latest updates, adoption success stories, and behind-the-scenes shelter moments. Whether you adopt, volunteer, or donate, every effort helps change lives—one paw at a time.

WORKING TOWARDS FINDING A CURE FOR ALL CHILDHOOD CANCERS AND TO SUPPORT FAMILIES AFFECTED BY CANCER
Strength is defined as the capacity to withstand great force or pressure. We expect that from our quarterbacks, but not from a child. Each year, more than 300 children and adolescents at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas are newly diagnosed with cancer, with more than 650 children receiving therapy at any given time. One-in-5 children diagnosed with cancer in Texas is treated at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas. This is a stark reminder of the urgent need to create brighter futures for kids with cancer. The Children’s Cancer Fund (CFF), founded in 1982 by a coalition of parents whose children were receiving cancer treatment at Children’s, is on a mission to invest in innovation, inspire hope, and provide resources for compassionate care. CCF relies on the dedication and expertise of several generous and compassionate leaders, including Roger and Marianne Staubach and Troy Aikman, to set their vision, direction, and mission. These organizers are joined by our community leaders, dedicated volunteers, and health professionals in their fundraising efforts. Because of this extensive support network, Children’s Cancer Fund has become one of the nation’s leading fundraising groups in supporting local research toward the treatment and prevention of childhood cancers. CFF is proud to announce that Honorary Chairs, Hall of Fame Troy Aikman and Cowboys Quarterback Dak Prescott will continue the impactful legacy of “Quarterbacks for a Cure” for their 35th Children’s Cancer Fund’s 35th Anniversary Gala sponsored by Dillard’s. This is CFF’s largest fundraiser for pediatric cancer research and care and is dedicated to advancing research and treatment programs in pediatric oncology. Aikman and Prescott will join the 2025 Gala Chairs Lori Jones and Meredith Land, pediatric cancer patients, survivors, and celebrities for an unforgettable event on April 11th at the Hilton Anatole in Dallas. This sold-out gala will feature a heartwarming fashion show where 20 pediatric cancer patients walk alongside celebrity escorts. The evening will include dinner, dancing, and live and silent auctions. Troy Aikman is passionate about this CFF Gala. “I get emotional about it because I know more and more kids suffering from cancer. These kids are great heroes and very courageous. I’ll keep coming until we find a cure.”
WHO: The Children’s Cancer Fund is a nonprofit organization based in Dallas that raises funds to benefit pediatric cancer research and treatment programs in North Texas. Every year, I go on a mad bluebonnet dash across Texas. As a Texas travel blogger, I know people all over the state are looking to take those coveted pictures of bluebonnets and relish their beauty for the short time they’re here between mid-March and mid-April. However, as I plan my trips, I always start with a nice little Google search and find myself wildly disappointed. Read on to get my scoop on the Texas hotspots.
If you look up where to see bluebonnets in Texas, you will get lists of cities with thousands of roads and parks, which isn’t much help. They just plop you into a city and don’t tell you where to go. Or the lists are regurgitated from years before, and those places no longer even produce bluebonnets! I want to know where to visit Bluebonnets now in 2025, not back in 2015—when all the bot sites seemed to source their info. I remember chasing photo locations for years, learning that after one bad season, they never returned. So, I set out to write this as an up-to-date list of authentic places to see and take pictures of bluebonnets in Texas, along with locations where you will actually find this Texas state flower. We’re particularly excited about 2025 because the early rains are an exciting sign that we will have a blooming bluebonnet season this year. So, pack your camera, gather your friends and family, and make sure you’re prepared for the adventure ahead.
When Is the Best Time to See Bluebonnets in Texas in 2025? In short, mid-March to mid-April, with some lucky spots still lingering in late April. In May, you’ll find other wildflowers, but not bluebonnets. But before we get into seeing bluebonnets, let’s get into some common courtesy and fact-checking. While it is not illegal to pick bluebonnets, you are not allowed to pick anything from government or private property. Therefore, don’t pick it up if it’s not on your land. Bluebonnets are beautiful wildflowers that capture everyone’s attention with their mesmerizing and soul-soothing sight. However, it’s important to be careful around them. If you, your kid, or your pets accidentally trample them, the flowers will not only be sad and squished for the next person, but may also be affected for years to come. For those reasons, being mindful and respectful of nature is crucial when enjoying the outdoors.
This is exactly why so many popular places don’t even have bluebonnets anymore. Too many people stomped all over them, and they didn’t bloom the following year. So, long story short—let’s all be good stewards of our beautiful Texas land.
Located south of Burnet, on Highway 281, Marble Falls is undoubtedly one of the best bluebonnet destinations. The parks actively plant bluebonnets and maintain them so that we can enjoy their beauty. You’ll see lots of bluebonnets on the road sides, as well as scenic and glamping spots. Here are some of the best and the safest spots to take photos.
Bluebonnet House might just be one of the most photographed houses in Texas. This abandoned home from the mid-19th century is situated in a field of beautiful wildflowers and is a very popular spot for photos. It’s been a bit
sparse in previous years, but we’re feeling good about 2025. Visit here on a cloudy day or at sunset. It is the best time to take photographs of the house without harsh light messing up pictures. Just a friendly reminder— while the bluebonnets may be tempting, please remember not to cross the fence. There are plenty of beautiful bluebonnets that extend beyond the fence line where you can capture stunning photos without trespassing.
Bluebonnet Cafe is a famed icon of Marble Falls with its famous pies and all-day breakfast. It’s a busy spot—especially on weekdays due to the names it attracts, but part of what makes it so iconic are bluebonnets nestling outside the restaurant that make it seem like you’re in a picture.
Turkey Bend Recreation Area is expected to be another stunner this year and a place you should add to your Texas Bluebonnet Trail Map. If you’re looking for the best spot, I recommend heading over to Muleshoe Bend.
Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area is just under an hour from Austin, Texas in Spicewood, and is famous for its spectacular bluebonnet displays along the Colorado River. This park is known for having vast fields of bluebonnets to wander through—thanks to the work of the LCRA parks. It seems that there are bluebonnets as far as the eye can see. With six miles of trails and plenty of space to stretch around and take photos of the beautiful flowers, we are confident that you will see beautiful bluebonnets this year and for years to come. They were at their peak last year on March 30th so make sure to add them to your list. We suggest that you check location tags on social media or follow LCRA parks for the update. (continued)
This town is another popular location to see bluebonnets, with spots that remain popular year after year. Fredericksburg itself makes it easy with its own bluebonnet map and watch (their 2025 map coming soon). Based on previous years, we hope to also see bluebonnets at Enchanted Rock State Park and Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park, but we will leave that up to time to tell us.
Willow Loop is a scenic 13-mile driving spot that starts just outside Fredericksburg. It winds through rolling hills where you can see cows lying out in pastures of bluebonnets and flowers. The scenic drive is truly breathtaking when the vibrant flowers are in full bloom. The colorful petals of the wildflowers create a stunning contrast against the lush green landscape, making it a sight to behold. Just be careful when traveling this loop on weekends, as its popularity does cause delays and bumper-tobumper traffic on what are usually open roads.
Wildseed Farms is one of the most popular spots for the Texas state flower. Even when it’s not bluebonnet season, you’ll find a diverse range of flowers here that will take your breath away. There’s no admission fee, so you can stroll around at your leisure and take in the stunning scenery. Don’t forget to visit the seed store before you leave. You can take some bluebonnet seeds home to grow your mini wildflower farm! While you won’t be able to sit in the blooms
like you may be able to at some parks, it sure is a great place to see rows and rows of bluebonnets not affected by careless wanderers trampling on the blooms.
Grapetown Vineyard & Farm is a great place to enjoy the stunning wildflowers and picturesque countryside, meet adorable baby goats and groove to live local music on Saturday, April 12th at the Bluebonnet Festival. It’s the perfect way to spend the day outdoors with family and friends!
Let’s go to none other than the “Official Bluebonnet City of Texas” itself, Ennis. This charming city near Dallas boasts the well-deserved title bestowed upon it by the State Legislature. And it’s not hard to see why! Ennis is famous for its 40 miles of bluebonnet trails that they track and map out yearly. So many beautiful flowers are laid out across different parks, including on the paths leading to Sugar Ridge Winery and along the Ennis Texas bluebonnet trails. Currently, the trails are expected to roll out from April 1-30, with a designated bluebonnet trail map you can follow. However, with the weather, things are always subject to change.
Located on Highway 290 between Austin and Houston, Brenham is known for having some amazing multi-colored flowers in addition to bluebonnets that spring along the roads, with longhorns grazing in the pastures surrounded by these gorgeous blooms. In the spring, the Brenham Chamber of Commerce conducts a Wildflower Watch and posts on its blog bluebonnet sightings that are spotted in the surrounding area. Brenham should be blooming anytime now in this season. Luckily, they make it easy with an entire 2025 wildflower driving map that takes you from Round Top through Washington County, with so many different stops along the way. You should plan on visiting either the Marble Falls area or plan on heading up to Ennis if you want to visit beginning-mid April. There are a few spots that particularly stand out for wildflowers!
Old Baylor Park is looking sparse for the rest of the season based on last year. However, every year it sets a beautiful background with the old building and the blanket of bluebonnets.
Retreat Hill Farm is graciously opened up to the public by the incredible Cox family. Their ranch is open for people to come and take as manny bluebonnet and red paintbrush pictures as their hearts desire! They have certain paths and trails, and even port-apotties to stay comfortable.
Sacred Heart Church is technically in Latium (very important when mapping so you don’t go to the wrong Sacred Heart Church), however there is a beautiful field of red paintbrushes growing up in front of the white church. Like most spots around Brenham, it’s a bit past it’s prime, but the sparse blooms are still gorgeous.
As a central Texas destination, Austin has several parks that make fore some great bluebonnet pictures.
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Park takes us back to where it all started, Lady Bird Johnson is a huge part of the reason of why we even have all these wildflowers everywhere. Lady Bird Johnson park has all sorts of wildflowers including nice hiking trails of bluebonnets unspoiled by people walking through them!
McKinney Falls State Park has a specific field with a mixture of red paintbrushes and bluebonnets mixed in creating a beautiful mixture of colors!
St Edwards Park is another popular spot in Austin that’s covered in bluebonnets—especially along the different hiking paths.
If you have the time to go to Big Bend, by all means, do it! As of early February 2025, the bluebonnets have been blooming. They tend to bloom as early as possible, and here you’ll get a special, wispier bluebonnet that’s iconic to this area. Sadly, we will not be making the trek down to Big Bend to track the bluebonnets (if you are, you’re in for a treat). However, if you plan on doing so, the most up-to-date source for 2025 will be to check the Big Bend Facebook groups. Nestled in the heart of Texas, Big Bend National Park is a vibrant tapestry of nature’s most stunning displays, with the bluebonnet season painting an especially breathtaking scene. Here are some of the best spots to make the most of your Big Bend bluebonnet adventure.
Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive allows you to embark on a picturesque 30mile journey from Castolon to the majestic Santa Elena Canyon, where the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive unfolds a canvas of bluebonnets. Take a moment to stop, breathe in the beauty, and capture memories amidst the fields of blue.
River Road is perfect for those adventure seekers! Prepare for a 51-mile journey trailing through the contours of the Rio Grande. This unpaved path is your gateway to some of the park’s most secluded and scenic treasures. Bluebonnets grace the open fields along this route.
Old Maverick Road is for those who revel in the road less traveled. The 14-mile unpaved road is a treasure trove of natural wonders. As you navigate the western expanse of the park, keep your eyes peeled for the mesmerizing bluebonnets adorning your path.
Homer Wilson Ranch is a step back in time and a testament to the enduring spirit of the West—now cradled within the park’s embrace. As you wander around the historic structures, the fields come alive with the vibrant hues of bluebonnets and wildflowers.
Dancing Bee Winery might be one of my favorite hidden gem bluebonnet spots because you get a mix of the vineyard vines and the bluebonnets. Right in mid-April, we expect it to be the best time to see the bluebonnets in all of their hues to pair perfectly with a glass of wine! As usual, we will update you on how they are coming along, as they are not currently in bloom.
Clarke Gardens is a delight for flower lovers’ souls. You’ll find all types of stunning flowers worth the visit. However, there is a section of bluebonnets for anyone looking for a place that’s not necessarily a field but an actual garden. You can expect to see these in April.
Tyler Rose Gardens are famous for their roses of course, but they are also known for their small section of bluebonnets. Their bluebonnets don’t just come in blue but also red, and the Aggie burgundy red (of course, Aggies have so much pride they would
make a bluebonnet their school colors). Come visit in April for a colorful mix that may be small but mighty.
Highways from Seguin down to Stockdale Experience breathtaking beauty of Seguin’s bluebonnets as you drive through fields that resemble a sea of blue and yellow. Please remember that these stunning sights are on private property, so admire them from the road for a truly scenic drive. Looking for a scenic drive filled with breathtaking bluebonnet views? Look no further than the highways from Seguin down to Stockdale! Not only bluebonnets, you will also be surrounded by a stunning variety of Texas wildflowers. Let the vibrant hues of these iconic flowers brighten your day as you cruise down the highways.
As we wrap up our bluebonnet journey, it’s obvious the Lone Star State offers many stunning locations to witness the beauty of its beloved state flower. Bluebonnet season in Texas is not just a time for spectacular photography or leisurely drives; it’s a statewide celebration of natural beauty, renewal, and pride.
These beautiful flowers bring together communities, families, and nature enthusiasts to share in the joy and awe that nature provides. The bluebonnets are waiting to share their beauty with you, painting the Texas landscape in shades of blue. Happy bluebonnet season!

and 2025 is extra special because its the 40th Anniversary of Dallas Blooms, the largest annual floral festival in the Southwest!
The Arboretum is a sea of color in the springtime with half a million tulips, daffodils, hyacinth, and pansies — as well as azaleas, roses, and cherry blossoms. My friend and I had the loveliest afternoon strolling through the garden.
Tulips are already blooming as of opening day, but even still it was only 20% of them blooming—and the garden will only get more spectacular as spring approaches and everything starts to fully bloom. There’s even a handy bloom tracker on the website so you know what to expect.
This year’s theme is Outside the Ordinary and features charming, exceptionally lifelike bronze sculptures throughout the garden by artist Seward Johnson including one enormous 20-foot tall sculpture called
Crossing Paths. If you love art and flowers, you’ll love this year’s whimsical exhibit!
Named by Southern Living magazine as one of “The Best Places to See Stunning Spring Blooms Across the South,” the Dallas Arboretum proudly presents 2025 Dallas Blooms: Outside the Ordinary— the Southwest’s largest floral festival presented by Amegy Bank.
Step Outside the Ordinary and into a world of artistry during Dallas Blooms, featuring the captivating sculptures of Seward Johnson. Known for his life-size, hyper-realistic bronze figures, Johnson’s work transforms everyday moments into extraordinary experiences. This year, the Arboretum is thrilled to welcome the largest sculpture ever exhibited at the Arboretum—Crossing Paths.
Standing 20 feet tall, this monumental piece leaves its New Jersey home for the
first time, making its debut here as a groundbreaking highlight of the festival. Don’t miss the chance to experience these remarkable works of art throughout the garden (pictured top right page 73).
After working up an appetite strolling the garden, we headed to Restaurant DeGolyer for lunch. If you aren’t enjoying lunch or tea at Restaurant DeGolyer during your trip to the Arboretum, you’re missing out! The restaurant is in the very middle of the Arboretum (and offers patio seating if you’re so inclined). It’s utterly delightful. We opted for lunch al fresco, savoring peekaboo lake views, rosé, sunshine, and 65 degree temperatures. My friend ordered one of my favorite dishes, the seafood stuffed avocados, and I chose the salmon niçoise salad. We also split the lemon shortcake for dessert, which was extremely moist and bursting with happy citrus flavor—perfect for a garden meal on a beautiful day.
Dallas Blooms includes not only a wonderful array of blooms but also the annual spring concert series, the Food and Wine Festival (one of my favorite events of the year), cooking classes, and so much more. The garden truly looks different every week thanks to staggered blooming times so it’s completely worth it to go several times throughout the spring.
Experience the garden in a whole new light! Stroll through thousands of vibrant spring blooms, enjoy live acoustic music by local artists, and savor delicious food and drinks available for purchase. Bring the whole family and explore with their special kids’ activity guide featuring the Outside the Ordinary art sculptures on display by Seward Johnson. The Dallas Blooms Garden Nights live entertainment is on these specific dates below from 6-9pm located in the Main Garden:
• March 30: Justin Griffith
• April 2: Charming Gardeners
Dallas Arboretum’s Food & Wine Festival is held March 27 from 7-9pm, chaired by the renowned Chef Sharon Van Meter. Enjoy delicious bites from top chefs, paired with exceptional wine and beer, as you stroll through a garden filled with millions of spring blooms. You can also visit a garden market following the Thursday night Food & Wine Festival. Market features several dozen vendors showcasing locally produced artisan goods, kitchen decor, and more. Access to the market is included with your membership or admission to the garden. Market open March 27, plus March 29 and 30 from 10am-3pm in the Main Entry Plaza.
The Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Garden cultivates a culture of belonging and accessibility by providing a safe and beautiful space that welcomes all to enjoy. It inspires people of all backgrounds by creating an open, positive and impactful environment. The Arboretum has been listed among the
top arboretums in the world and the vast number of honors is so extensive it is listed on their website. The Dallas Arboretum is proud to offer the public an array of popular annual events, educational programs for children and adults, and an emphasis on family-oriented activities. Ground-breaking horticultural research conducted in their Trial Gardens continues to contribute to an important body of knowledge—both regionally and nationally. Located on the shores of White Rock Lake, the Arboretum’s 66 acres include a complete life science lab with an endless potential for discovery.

REVIEW BY JENNIFER SLOAN
With food dyes and additives making headlines for possible neurological effects on children, many Americans are taking a closer look at what they eat. I’ve definitely felt a call to buy less processed foods from local farms and artisans, with a list of just a few ingredients—all of which I can pronounce. But let’s be real: making your own, or even acquiring, foods without additives, preservatives and stabilizers, is a daunting task. It’s far more convenient to grab a jar of Skippy rather than find someone who roasts and grinds their own organic peanuts. But I’m hopeful that such will one day become the norm rather than the exception. I’ve felt a shift in the restaurant industry, as well. More and more I’m seeing “organic,” and “farm-to-table” and “house-made” as a badge of honor on menus. But I have found myself wondering if all these claims were genuine or if there are indeed jars of Skippy behind closed kitchen doors.
At Chef’s House in Roanoke there’s no wondering what’s being used back of the house because it’s an open kitchen—truly. Located in a cottage on Oak Street’s main drag, Chef’s House offers an intimate dining experience that emphasizes
fresh and organic locally sourced ingredients. Every night, Chef’s House limits its reservations to two separate seatings of 20 people—at 6pm and 8pm. Chef and Owner Sage Sakiri creates a different fourcourse menu daily to celebrate the in-season ingredients, ensuring every bite is as thoughtful as it is delicious.
What makes Chef’s House truly unique is the connection Chef Sage and his Sous Chef (and son) Abe make with their guests, personally sharing the inspiration and story behind every dish. This is not just a meal: it’s an immersive conversation about food, flavors and the farmto-table way of life. You will know exactly where your food came from and why each ingredient was even selected. A recent menu included roasted oxtail with Pecorino polenta, baby arugula salad with soft goat cheese and a champagne caraway vinaigrette and an aged NY strip with a green peppercorn beurre rouge.
Chef’s House is redefining Mondays with its handcrafted, made-to-order sandwich specials—each one a unique creation by the talented Chef Sage. Every week brings a new flavor, crafted from the freshest
ingredients and designed to satisfy. A recent standout was a sausage and peppers sub—a New York City classic perfected. Juicy, seasoned sausage grilled to perfection, nestled in a toasted roll, and topped with caramelized peppers and onions, this sub was a masterpiece. Subs also include chips and a drink. Chef’s House has made Mondays something to look forward to all week long.
Chef’s House is BYOB. Guests are encouraged to bring their own wine to complement their meal. On select nights, Chef’s House partners with Bingham Family Vineyards. Chef Sage pairs a delicious five-course meal with handpicked wines, using his extensive culinary expertise to select the most delectable pairings. Chef’s House also offers interactive lunch experiences with live cooking demonstrations, limited to six guests, providing a unique opportunity to learn about farm-to-table cooking directly from the chef. The threecourse lunch is priced at $45 per person and begins at 11:30am. Wednesday through Friday.
Whether it’s lunch or dinner, Chef’s House is by reservation only—and reservations can be made through the restaurant’s website or by phone. What I love most about Chef’s House is it’s a replica of Chef Sage’s grandparents’ home in Yugoslavia. From the tables and chairs to the art on the walls and kick-knacks scattered about, you’ll feel like your stepping into an old friend’s house where the conversation is good and the food is even better.
