NEW YORK’S SASSY SWEETHEART RAINA SEITEL By Jack Tudor

atching up with Raina Seitel is truly like chatting with an old friend. After all, her career spans a wide swath of high-profile media. From reporting hard (Emmy-winning) news on all major networks to serving as correspondent on the daily lifestyle show New York LIVE on NBC New York, she’s literally like MasterCard: everywhere you want her to be. Residing uptown with her son, Hunter, and her longhaired Chihuahua, Theo, Raina recently found a slice of time to fill us in on what’s keeping her busy.

Your work life sometimes merges with your personal one. Yes, and it’s exciting when it does. We just did a story about the new Dining with Your Dogs law, and my old-timer, Theo, got to be the star. He sniffed out all the hottest dog-friendly restaurants and we followed along. By the way, he highly recommends the chicken and waffles at The Pavilion.

Your New York LIVE audience watches you on TV screens and taxis around the city. What are your thoughts on being front and center? I’m grateful that I get to do what I love professionally in the city that I love personally — with the most talented team in television. We explore all the good stuff and call it work! I have pinch-me moments every day because I cover everything from Broadway openings to the latest fitness craze to fashion trends to foodie hot spots. It’s really a labor of love. Was the jump from hard news to entertainment tastemaker a natural progression for you? The thing that drives me most is curiosity. I believe you can never ask too many questions to get to the heart of a story, and you have to listen with wonder. So whether it’s a hard-hitting investigative story like the ones I did at Good Morning America or a behind-thescenes feature on Fiddler on the Roof, it is the same mindset that propels me. I go in knowing what I want to ask but really let the interview unfold and lead me. That’s when the impromptu, most authentic moments unfold.

Since you cover the coolest trends and happenings in New York, what’s the best ticket in town right now? Well, Hamilton, of course. And I may or may not be able to recite every lyric of every song. What is a must do in the city this summer and why? Um, see Hamilton. Seriously, though, you can’t go wrong with the classics like Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks, Shakespeare in the Park, U.S. Open, or Summer at Lincoln Center. What’s NYC’s best-kept secret from a foodie perspective? I have a sweet tooth, so our family’s go-tos are The Little Cupcake Bakeshop on the LES, for vegan cookies and cream cupcakes. And we’re regulars at our neighborhood spot, Levain Bakery. For those who don’t consider cupcakes and cookies a meal, the gospel brunch at the Red Rooster in Harlem is great. And somehow you fit in being a mom too. I couldn’t love any two creatures more than I love Hunter and Theo, and the good news is only one can talk back! Right now Hunter and I are working on a family project: an illustrated children’s book. No matter what we do, it’s always an adventure.
