SUSHI BY THE SEA Manhattan Beach’s winning dining scene scores another spot with the arrival of Sushi Akatora, a friendly, faux-rustic Japanese restaurant in the city’s north end. Behind the restaurant is esteemed restaurateur Michael Cardenas (Sushi Roku, BOA, Katana); behind the counter are chefs Hideyuki Yokohama (Jinpachi) and Hiroyuki Fujita (Lazy Ox Canteen), who engage in kappo-style dining, or face-to-face interaction with customers, as they expertly prepare raw fish such as exquisite, melt-in-your mouth toro and uni. Also on the menu are izakaya-style dishes such as popcorn shrimp and lamb meatballs, plus kid-friendly and gluten-free options. You’ll find us at our new regular table at happy hour, catching glimpses of the sun setting over the ocean while we drink Kirin and chopstick-spar over the last piece of hamachi crudo. 302 Rosecrans Ave., Manhattan Beach, 310.802.1131, akatorala.com

All Italia At Alimento, Silver Lake’s new osteria, chef Zach Pollack draws from all of Italy’s diverse regions to serve dishes that will never make an appearance at your local Olive Garden. Start with the Pig in a Blanket—a thick slice of mortadella in between two slabs of flaky spelt pastry—or go

straight for the pasta. The tagliatelle here is made with rye flour, and the radiatori is dyed with squid ink and served with red winebraised squid, mussels, sliced snap peas and dried tomatoes. Follow with the bone-in pork shank affumicato, and pair it with a hearty red

from the restaurant’s erudite wine list, which is full of smaller, hardto-find labels and varietals. The menu here is so authentically Italian that it may be more fitting to call the neighborhood Lago d’Argento. 1710 Silver Lake Blvd., L.A., 323.928.2888, alimentola.com
