Hello! I can’t believe it is already fall and time for our Fall Fashion Issue. This year is flying by so fast it’s crazy, but I am very excited a new season is upon us! I am already plotting my route through the State Fair to maximize belly space for all my favorite foods that only come around once a year, while mixing in plenty of time for games, walking around, seeing shows, and of course, eating some more. I’m sure most of you are going to be on the same route. Anyway, back to talking about our Fall Fashion Issue. We have a really great one in store for you this year. You’re going to see some of the musthaves of the fall season, like new bags, shoes, outfits and more. You’ll find Josie, a fantastic local, showcasing tons of fall looks in layers – fall is all about layers. In the morning you’re in pants and long sleeves and by afternoon you’re drowning in sweat and shedding layers down to a tank top. This shoot was a blast! We bounced around to spots throughout Midtown, Downtown, Automobile Alley and Film Row. And how could we truly be a local magazine without featuring locally made fashion? We are proud to show off the talents of several local entrepreneurs and

fashionistas and all of their creations. You’ll find a mix of earrings, bracelets, cuff links and T-shirts. As you will see, we try to provide all the info you need to track down any items that you want to buy, and we hope this issue helps you find several must-have additions to your closet. As always, we encourage you to shop local when and where you can! Lastly, I would like to say thank you for your continued support of So6ix Magazine. We are continually blown away and humbled by the overflowing compliments and popularity of this product that we give our all to make. You are why we work so hard to make So6ix the best we possibly can, and as we grow and time rolls on we will strive to continually evolve and improve everywhere possible. Thank you for reading!

The great State Fair is back and better than ever. You’ll find plenty of new and exciting attractions, rides, food, live music and events while still partaking in all of the classics like Disney on Ice, the PRCA Xtreme Bulls Tour, the Sky Eye Wheel (the largest traveling Ferris wheel in North America, measuring a whopping 155 ft. tall), classic fair food and more. All of it combined makes for the best 10 days in Oklahoma each September. You don’t want to miss anything this year, trust us.

Hats are popular in any season, but that doesn’t mean every style can be worn from one season to the next. It’s time to put away the straw hats and visors and bring out the felt, wool, and floppy looks. There are so many great fall hats, and here are just a few that are on trend.

MEET BENTLEY!

Owner: Tom & Connie Hess This blue-eyed five-year-old Old English Sheepdog is a beauty and his name is Bentley! Bentley is goofy, loving and sociable, and he can be stubborn at times because he wants to handle things on his own! Don’t try to bribe Bentley with food or treats, he won’t have it – but he will do just about anything for his owners. His breed aims to please their person 24/7. However, he does love chicken strips and a good New York strip steak, and he truly believes in dessert before the main course (our kind of guy!). He doesn’t want his dinner unless he gets his chicken strip first! He loves people of all ages and all walks of life, so much so that Bentley won a Social Butterfly award at his K9 University. He truly is a loving, one-of-akind pup that his owners love so very much. Be sure to say hi to Bentley if you see him out and about! 50

EATS After Guernsey Park closed this year, its creators and owners – the same people who brought you the local favorite Chick-n-Beer – opened this new concept, and we’re a little obsessed, to be honest. Okie Pokie and NooDee is one space with two different types of food going on, and it works really well. This new eatery has quietly been in the works for the last three years, and it’s now opening after careful planning and plenty of research. Poke can be summed up as next-generation sushi from the islands of Hawaii. It’s kind of like a bowl of deconstructed sushi – fresh fish cuts – that is completely customizable, from the rice to the toppings and sauces. They serve the simple traditional poke, but they also have many great additional toppings for everyone’s preference and dietary needs. Poke has been wildly popular in larger cities in California, New York and Florida and has finally made its way to Oklahoma City! The NooDee side serves delicious noodle bowls. Just like with Okie Pokie, you can create your own or choose from one of their tasty house creations. We recommend you get a little adventurous with your choices, but there’s something on the menu for everyone. One thing we have to brag about (besides the unbelievable taste) is how fresh everything is. Okie Pokie orders fresh fish every 2 days at the most. And they’re whipping up all of their sauces in-house, like dynamite wasabi, gochujang, ponzu, hoisin soy glaze, bourbon teriyaki (on the NooDee side), shallot cream cheese, and roasted jalapeño cilantro mayo (you’re going to want to eat this one by itself with a spoon, just a warning). Their sauces are out of this world. If you’re making your own poke bowl, you’ll want to top it with their seaweed salad ( just try it), mango salsa, edamame or even hot Cheetos – yes, seriously! Both sides are truly customizable, so you can eat exactly what you want, how you want. We love that you can grab a fresh fish poke bowl that’s maybe on the healthier side of the spectrum while your significant other can get a decadent curry noodle bowl, and you can do it from one place. In this fast-casual restaurant, you can sit and enjoy for however long you’d like, eat quickly on your lunch break or grab it to go – whatever is most convenient for you and your schedule. After just one experience, we already can’t get enough of this place. This is quality food that is not only different from the usual in Oklahoma, but unbelievably delicious. Don’t just take our word for it, run – don’t walk – here, and you’ll be glad you did. 52

It’s so loved, it’s been featured on the famous Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” They do breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you’ll find a little bit of everything on the menu. They have traditional breakfasts, or try their famous half a fried chicken and Belgian waffle topped with sweet strawberry butter and their signature sweet and spicy sauce (okay, we’re drooling). There’s plenty of benedicts and omelets to go around, too. No matter the day or time of year, you can get comfort foods like shrimp and grits, chicken pot pie and Metro Diner’s famous meatloaf. There truly is something for everyone on this menu!

A N ATO MY W INE CLUB 1600 N.W. 16TH ST., OKC, OK 73106 ANATOMYWINEOKC.COM Anatomy Wine Club: a place for people who love wine, and who definitely believe in having a good time. Wine tasting and education can be so much more than what you’ve seen before. This spot, located in the Plaza District, is trendy and cozy, and their vinyl collection will be spinning while you’re sipping on your vino. Their Wine Enthusiasts will help you pick the perfect glass depending on your preferences. You can also choose from their selection of house-curated tasting menus and enjoy sipping on some of your favorite varietals while learning about them. This is a whole new wine bar experience. You get to taste, try, mingle and learn all in one place. They also have a great space in their tasting room for your next private party, and they can create a custom tasting menu specifically for your event.

BULGO GI KORE AN BIST RO 1102 E. 2ND ST., EDMOND, OK 73034 405.285.4141 | FACEBOOK.COM/BULGOGIEDMOND Authentic Korean food has made its way to Edmond, Oklahoma. Bulgogi Korean Bistro is serving up delicious traditional Korean food like kimchi jeon, bulgogi, bibimbap, kimchi stew, Korean-style ramen and so much more. Don’t let any of those names scare you – everything is packed full of flavor and will make you want more, we promise. Bulgogi is traditionally thinly sliced tender sirloin beef marinated in Korean teriyaki sauce and served with rice or noodles. A lot of the dishes come in a hot stone pot, so you’re getting the total experience. It hasn’t been open for very long, but according to reviews, some locals are already deeming it not just the best Korean food in Edmond, but in all of Oklahoma.

G O O D T IME S 1234 N. WESTERN AVE., OKC, OK 73106 405.609.3647 | FACEBOOK.COM/GOODTIMESOK Good Times is the newest venture from The Good Guys Group, which owns and operates spots like Kong’s Tavern, Greystone Lounge and more. Good Times is a dive bar near Midtown and downtown OKC. They offer everything you could hope for: wine cocktails, beer, craft cocktails, and their own signature adult juice pouches. Think Capri Sun, but for 21 and up! All of their drinks are so creative. You have to try one of their delicious tiki drinks served in a traditional tiki glass, or their spin on frozen cocktails. If you’re hungry you can try one of their fun dive bar options like Frito chili pie straight out of the Fritos bag, like it should be. Occasionally they have live art or music, too! An added bonus: they have a great patio that is dog friendly!

GIVING FOR GOOD OKC METRO

LITERACY COALITION Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

In the United States, an estimated 30 million people over the age of 16 read no better than the average elementary school child.

Low literacy’s effects cost the U.S. $225 billion or more each year in non-productivity in the workforce, in crime, and in loss of tax revenue due to unemployment.

More than 140,000 people in Oklahoma County are considered functionally illiterate.

Nearly two-thirds of Oklahoma 4th graders do not score proficient in reading on a nationally normed test.

The Oklahoma City Metro Literacy Coalition was founded in 2007 when leaders from across the city noticed increasingly low literacy levels in the metro and decided to find a solution. Without the ability to read and write, adults are left with many disadvantages in life, from getting the right medical care all the way down to things like grocery shopping and paying bills. The goal of the OKCMLC is to ensure that anyone who wants literacy services can access them, that literacy providers have the resources they need to provide the best possible service to learners, and to bring the community together to present a united voice for literacy. Literacy is essential in eradicating poverty at home, improving infant mortality rates, addressing gender inequality (two-thirds are women), and creating sustainable development to help our people become employed, self-sufficient and able to climb a career ladder. The OKCMLC is doing just that and making a positive impact on our city in such a big way. The OKCMLC will connect you to the correct people and services like community literacy centers, one-on-one tutoring, GED classes and testing, and so much more. Be sure to check out their website for more in-depth information.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

VOLUNTEER

Donations cover the literacy referral service, GED test fee scholarships, network meetings on various topics, professional development grants, and more.

There are many ways to volunteer, like tutoring an adult, tutoring an adult English language learner, tutoring an elementary student after school, reading out loud to an elementary student, volunteering at the Metro Library, and more.
