Summer is here! Hope you’re having an awesome summer, and if you’re reading this before July 4th, then here’s wishing you an amazing Independence Day!  In the spirit of summer and the  4th of July  we have a really awesome Burgers & BBQ issue all lined up for you, and it’s a really tasty one if I do say so myself. I am definitely guilty of gluttony this month, as I ate way too much, but when incredible local restaurants provide you with wonderfully creative and delicious dishes to take pictures of, you just have to eat it all once the work is done (insert pig emoji). Working on this issue was a ton of hard work, but it was so much fun, too. Meeting with owners of small local restaurants, hearing their stories and inspiration for starting their restaurants, and being treated so graciously made every bit of hard work worth it. There is so much love and passion among the local restaurant owners in what they do, and you can definitely feel it and taste it in the food they provide.  As you turn the pages of this issue, I think you will be truly impressed at how unique, creative and big the local culinary scene is in Oklahoma. Just narrowing down our theme to Burgers & BBQ, we were overwhelmed with how many restaurants do these two items. We tried to

include as many local restaurants as possible and still had to leave several out, or we would never have finished this issue. I have a fun challenge for you this month. I think we are all guilty of eating at the same three or four restaurants all the time while wishing we ventured out more and tried just some of the new restaurants in OKC. So, I challenge you to use our Burgers & BBQ spread this month as a checklist of new places to try. Each time you plan to eat out, grab this issue, pick out one of the dishes we photographed and go try it. After you do, cross it off, and then try another dish the next time you’re out on the town. See how many you can try. I promise – and this is coming from someone who ate almost all of these creative creations this month – it’s all super delicious and tons of fun.  Thank you for your continued support of our magazine, and here’s to an awesome summer filled with some of the absolute best food in the Midwest.  Happy Eating!

Eating Seasonably This Summer There’s nothing better than biting into a fruit or veggie that is at the peak of its growing season. Sure, nowadays you can find just about any fruit or vegetable year-round in the grocery stores, but there’s a major difference when you eat one in season. What’s even better than eating in season from a grocery store? Finding these foods from local growers at your local farmers market! Check out all of these wonderful fruits, vegetables and herbs that are now in season.

Summer is in full swing and so are the grills and smokers. Does anything scream summer more than burgers & BBQ? We don’t think so. Luckily, Oklahoma has some of the best of both in the nation. If you’re not from here, taste it just once and you’ll know we’re right in no time. So many local spots are whipping up the tastiest and most interesting burgers and mouthwatering BBQ, and if you’re lucky you’ll find a restaurant that does both! On just about every menu around town, you’ll find a burger of some sort: four patties piled high, stuffed burgers, the good ol’ regulars, and even vegan burgers. There’s so many to taste and try. Is it just us, or are burgers getting taller? Soon they might get too big to fit in your face, if they aren’t already, but hey, we’re not complaining. If it’s edible, it’s probably been piled on a burger somewhere in Oklahoma. We’re going to make a bold statement and say that Oklahoma BBQ is some of the best ever. Yep – ever. It’s its own hybrid form of deliciousness that combines a little bit of love from Kansas City, Memphis and Texas-style BBQ with its own Oklahoma flair and it’s oh-so-good. Chances are if you’re a born and bred Okie, you indulge in this goodness at least once a week, and we honestly don’t blame you. Between the great burgers and yummy BBQ, we tasted our way around town to give you a list of some of the best of both worlds. Take this list when you’re out with your favorite people and work your way through it this summer!

EATS If you’ve lived in Oklahoma awhile or if you’re a frequent visitor, chances are you’ve heard of Raspberries n’ Creme, and you may have even eaten there or had one of their cakes at your special occasion. This family-owned and operated spot has been whipping up deliciousness for the last 36 years. After their mother passed away, sisters Nikki and Bridgette came together to keep the business running for their mom, for their family and for the city. Now both Raspberries n’ Creme and Nikkellette’s Café together are serving up delicious cakes, sweet goodies and delicious café dishes. When you walk in, you’re greeted by the sweetest smiling faces and eclectic décor you can tell was hand selected. It creates a warm and charming environment, and you can’t help but smile back. On the café side, you’ll find everything from delicious salads to piled-high sandwiches, hot burgers, Nikki’s Famous Fish Tacos and more. Each dish has a creative ingredient or spin that makes it unique. Like the fish tacos, for example – we would never think to put raspberry chipotle on there, but we’re so glad they did (we could probably drink it, to be honest). They make so many of the items in-house, like the breads, which we’re pretty positive could win an award of some sort (they’re so good). We need like two pages just to talk about their cakes and desserts. They have so many creative and delectable choices, and there’s nothing else really like them. If we were only allowed to eat their ribbon cake for the rest of our days, we wouldn’t be mad about it. Not only is this food so delicious (trust us, we tasted it all), but it’s some of the prettiest food we’ve seen, and that probably has a little something to do with the fresh flowers Nikki personally handpicks at market every single week. The flowers don’t just go with the food – they use them in their cakes, and they even do full-service flower arrangements! You’re probably thinking, okay, what doesn’t Raspberries n’ Creme do? And the answer is nothing, they do it all! It’s virtually a one-stop shop when it comes to food and events. They’re working around the clock on wedding cakes, groom’s cakes, full-service catering, baby showers, flower bouquets, mimosa bars, office box lunches, rehearsal dinners, bridesmaid luncheons and so much more. They can handle as little or as much as you need in a fairly short amount of time. One amazing thing about the space is they let you use it for large party gatherings without melting away your checkbook. They’re extremely accommodating and customizable to your needs and wants. If you take anything away from this review, know that whether you’re stopping by for a quick delicious lunch with your girlfriends, ordering one of their infamous ribbon cakes, or working with them on your special day, these local ladies are putting their blood, sweat, tears and heart into what they do, and it definitely shows.

UNCLE J ULIO’ S 1344 W. MEMORIAL RD., OKC, OK 73114 405.486.0720 | UNCLEJULIOS.COM Uncle Julio’s, the beloved Mexican restaurant from Dallas, has finally made its way to OKC! They’re whipping up delicious made-from-scratch Mexican food in their new home in Chisholm Creek in northwest Oklahoma City. Uncle Julio’s offers a unique take on Tex-Mex favorites, and you can’t miss their handcrafted cocktail menu either. Fun fact: Uncle Julio’s actually coined the term “The Swirl” for a drink that has become widely popular, a mix of frozen margarita and homemade sangria. You can’t go wrong with any of the menu choices, but Uncle Julio’s is known for their fajitas. They have tons of options, from their original fajitas with honey chipotle chicken or filet mignon to the mesquite-grilled carne asada or bacon-wrapped camarones. We definitely recommend the fajitas!

THE WINSTON 106 W. MAIN STREET, NORMAN, OK 73069 405.561.7616 | THEWINSTON.COM The Winston, from the Hal Smith restaurant family, is the newest eating place on Main Street in Norman. The Winston offers elevated pub food, craft cocktails, draft beer and an unmatched selection of whiskey. On the cocktail menu you’ll find great classics with their own Winston twist, a seasonal cocktail selection that you must try, and a beer menu that boasts plenty of Oklahoma-made beers. We love the ode to local brews! They have plenty of small and share plate options if you’re just looking for a snack or starter, like chicken waffles, buffalo skins and crispy duck wings. Their main dishes are oh-so-good: chipotle meatloaf, filet and frites, avocado toast and so much more. Be sure to stop by the Winston on the weekend for brunch! We have a feeling this spot is going to become quite a favorite among Norman friends.

DECK LE SMOKE H OUSE BBQ 324 W. EDMOND RD., EDMOND, OK 73003 405.657.2992 | DECKLESMOKEHOUSEBBQ.COM The new Deckle Smokehouse BBQ in Edmond represents true Texas pit-style barbecue. They’re serving up 100% wood-smoked meats with the finest and freshest ingredients around. Everything is made from scratch daily, and you can taste it in every bite. They offer beef brisket, turkey breast, German sausage, beef short ribs, pork ribs and pulled pork, sold by the weight or on a sandwich. While the meats are the star of the show, you can’t overlook their unique sides: creamy spicy cheesy grits, potato cheese bombs, smoked bacon green beans, and green apple coleslaw. We’ll take one of each, please! You can taste the love and authenticity in every bite. Deckle is a great addition to our BBQ scene.

PAS EO GRILL 2909 PASEO, OKC, OK 73103 405.601.1079 | PASEOGRILL.COM Paseo Grill is an upscale restaurant cooking up the very best of the land and sea in the vibrant Paseo district. It’s been a longtime favorite in Oklahoma City and has actually been named the most romantic restaurant in Oklahoma by USA Today. You’ll find both classic American cuisine and a little bit of international flair. You can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu, but if you’re undecided, let us steer you in the direction of the Miso Sea Bass. It’s delicate, sweet and savory. Or go for the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast over a raspberry bourbon sauce. Paseo Grill is often visited for special occasions, but with food this good, don’t save it – meet friends after work for a glass of wine and a crab cake or stop by for a Tuesday dinner. You’ll be glad you did! 54

GIVING FOR GOOD

THE HUGS PROJECT Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

Hugs are cool ties that go around soldiers’ necks to keep them cool.

The Hugs Project has members in every state and 58 foreign countries.

They have sent out over 2.5 million “hugs,” which lower body temps by more than 7°.

They have sent out 800,000 “kisses,” aka helmet coolers.

They have provided more than 3,000 tons of care package items.

The Hugs Project was started in May 2004 by Oklahomans Ray and Karen Stark. With Ray being in the military, they both had strong ties to and passion for our troops and knew they wanted to do something for those serving to show they were supported. The project started with care packages and grew to include the cool ties, which is now one of the highest-volume items that they send overseas. Karen read a story of a 22-year-old woman who collapsed and died of heatstroke while standing guard duty. The extreme heat in the Middle East makes this problem too common. She knew she was being called to help, and she started sending the ties overseas to make a difference. The cool ties now have the name “hug,” and those at the Hugs Project believe every U.S. serviceperson deserves a hug from home. It doesn’t stop there – the Hugs Project also provides winter warmers, and they’re now working with clinics in Oklahoma to help provide free-of-cost care for soldiers with PTSD and traumatic brain injury. With donations, they are funding care for returning troops, veterans and first responders. The Hugs Project is spreading so much love and doing great things in so many people’s lives.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

VOLUNTEER

Donating money is a great way to help the Hugs Project with medical expenses, postage for shipping care packages to soldiers, and supplies for care packages. They also accept donations for care package items. Visit their website for the list, which includes items like canned food, bandages, socks, sewing kits and more.

They’re always looking for volunteers to help put care packages together and to take on sewing “hugs.” They share the sewing patterns with you and make sure you’re set up for success.
