Since 2016 Nhu Avenue, located in the hustling and bustling Midtown, has been providing women a beautiful shopping experience. Their contemporary apparel offers quality and classic style at an affordable price. They just celebrated their 3-year anniversary and this is their 4th holiday season. Owner and operator Lanh Hguyen has over 15 years of retail experience, including working as a corporate buyer for Neiman Marcus in Dallas for over a decade. Lanh has a passion for women’s contemporary apparel and after getting married she brought her knowledge and expertise to Oklahoma City. She has always loved fashion and the idea of owning her own business. She decided to take the leap and go for it, and we’re thankful she did! Being a local store owner, she’s able to have more of a work-life balance compared to when she was working corporate, and that’s priceless. Nhu Avenue also does sales online, and they hope to expand even more in that area. As for the storefront, they mainly sell apparel and accessories, but soon they’ll be expanding into other categories such as shoes and handbags once they curate the right brands for the store. We look forward to Nhu Avenue being part of our growing community for years to come. so6ix.com | DECEMBER 2019

Julia McLish, owner of Barkeep, is helping the city keep up with its bar game! The quaint little shop opened up in July 2018 in Midtown. It’s one of the cutest shops with everything you can imagine to take your bar to the next level. Whether you’re a bartender or just an enthusiast, they have something for everyone. Julia comes from a server/bartender background. She noticed little things were missing in the market when getting supplies and ingredients for her creations, like nice cherries, syrups and flower waters. This inspired her to bring something new to the city. At Barkeep you’ll find everything from unique gifts to bar tools and ingredients. What a lot of people don’t know about the shop is that there’s an actual bar in there! They have a full-service bar with a seasonal cocktail menu and even offer personalized cocktail making classes! It’s such a unique, refreshing addition to our city’s shop local scene. so6ix.com | DECEMBER 2019

12016 n. may ave., okc, ok 73120 405.752.8959 genosfurs.com

For the last 23 years, Geno’s Furs, owned and operated by Gene and Ashlie Atkinson, has been the leader for furs in Oklahoma City, and they don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. Gene was at one time the manager of a competing store that is no longer in business. He decided to open his own store at The Shoppes at Northpark. When they opened, they didn’t have a single coat in the store and had no idea when they were going to get any. Gene called a friend of a friend, who sent some furs on consignment. They didn’t even arrive until the second week of business! Through the years Geno’s Furs has grown and become a major establishment for fine furs. Geno’s takes their customers’ trust very seriously. They are a treasure to do business with, whether your lifelong dream is to own a fur or you’re storing your precious fur with Geno’s. Being in business for so many years, they’ve watched customers get married, have families and now grandchildren (including Gene and Ashlie’s!), and it’s so rewarding. They plan to continue to offer exceptional service and a beautiful, natural product to Oklahoma City for many, many years to come. 22

Q: What is “Constitutional Carry” in Oklahoma?

A: “Constitutional Carry” is the nickname used to describe the statutory right of Oklahomans to publicly carry a “loaded or unloaded shotgun, rifle and/or pistol without a handgun license” as codified in 21 O.S. 1289.6. and effective as of 11/1/19. In order to lawfully “carry,” a person must be at least 21 years old (or at least 18 if a veteran of the Armed Forces) and must not be otherwise disqualified from owning a firearm because of convictions for crimes like assault and battery, domestic violence and drug offenses. For a specific list, see 21 O.S. 1272(6).

Q: Does this mean I can carry my gun ANYWHERE I want to? A: NO! 21 O.S. 1277 still makes it illegal to carry a firearm into a city, town, county, state or federal building; a courthouse, prison or jail; a public or private elementary school; a publicly owned sports arena during a professional sporting event; and any place where gambling is allowed by law.

Q: Can I carry/transport my gun in my vehicle? A: Yes, but with certain requirements. A person otherwise eligible to possess a pistol or handgun may transport it in a vehicle, whether loaded or unloaded, at any time; however, you MUST tell the police that you have the firearm if you are pulled over, and it is a crime to fail to do so. If you want to transport a loaded rifle or shotgun, it cannot be “chamber-loaded” and must be contained in a locked compartment of the vehicle. If it’s unloaded, it can be anywhere in the vehicle. See 21 O.S. 1289.7 and 21 O.S. 1289.13.

MEET RAFTER!

Owner: Dusty Boren This energetic cutie is making everyone’s day left and right! Rafter is a Goldendoodle who is full of life. Rafter is headstrong, but don’t let that fool you – he’s a softie who loves to cuddle and be held, even though he’s not quite lapdog size. Rafter will love you forever if you feed him his favorite treat: ham sandwiches! He’s always down for a good costume or dress-up day in the office at his job as the 4Corners Homes spokesdog. Be sure to say hi to Rafter if you see him out and about!

There’s a new Szechuan restaurant in town: Chuanyu Fusion. A place so authentic, if you close your eyes while indulging in the delicious dishes, it’ll transport

you right to the heart of China. This quaint spot is located on the northwest side of Oklahoma City. Many Asian restaurants have turned to Americanized Chinese food, but Chuanyu Fusion doesn’t shy away from serving unique and authentic dishes. Don’t worry, they still have plenty of familiar options too – but we highly recommend stepping outside of your comfort zone. You’ll find some interesting menu ingredients, but don’t shy away from trying something new. We promise you’ll be glad you did. If you feel like having something more in line with the usual, their Americanized Chinese recipes are done in such a way that you’ll forget you’re eating the typical sesame chicken. In each dish you can taste the careful creation that takes every single bite to the next level. If you’re not afraid of spice, they have a ton of great dishes that really pack the heat. Not in a fry your taste buds type of way, but in a carefully composed layering heat that is oh-so-good. But don’t worry if you’re not a fan of spice: they do plenty of

dishes that are mild to not spicy at all. They’ve done many things well at Chuanyu Fusion, but one of the best is how they’ve used their knowledge to make creative combinations of so many different spices. When paired together, they each add a layer of flavor to each dish that keeps you coming back for bite after bite. Their menu is large and very well priced, and you seriously

OFF THE HOOK SEAFOOD & MORE 125 W. BRITTON ROAD, OKC, OK 73114 405.840.3474 | OFFTHEHOOKOKC.COM After starting out as a popular food truck, Off the Hook Seafood has settled into a permanent location where the people of Oklahoma can get their seafood and comfort-food dishes regularly. Off the Hook has opened multiple locations and continues to take the food scene by storm. This restaurant has some of the most delicious seafood recipes around. You’ll find everything here: seafood gumbo, smothered seafood fries or rice, shrimp and grits, fish baskets, cheese lobster sandwiches, and so much more. They’re using the freshest ingredients, so you know you’re getting really great quality and flavor. Check them out next time you’re craving seafood – you won’t be disappointed.

PATTY WAGON 3600 N. MAY AVE., OKC, OK 73112 405.917.1711 | THEPATTYWAGONOK.COM Another mobile eatery has turned into a brick-and-mortar restaurant, and it’s loved now more than ever. We feel like their French fries need an award all on their own. They’re the real deal: fresh potatoes hand-cut and fried to perfection. All the burgers are made with locally raised, grass-fed hormone- and antibiotic-free beef. You can choose between the simple single burger, the double, or a gourmet burger piled high with condiments and tasty ingredients. Patty Wagon whips up all of their own sauces and you’ll definitely want to try them all. You can’t go wrong with any choice on the menu, no matter what you’re in the mood for.

CO US COUS CAFE 6165 N. MAY AVE., OKC, OK 73112 405.286.1533 | COUSCOUSCAFEOKC.COM Oklahoma may be a good distance from the Mediterranean, but our own Couscous Cafe delivers delicious Middle Eastern food all the same. This tiny spot, tucked away in a strip mall, has everything you could want in Moroccan food. From their homemade dishes to their drinkable tzatziki sauce (yes, it’s that good), to the creamy hummus and stuffed grape leaves, you know you’re getting quality food and for a price that’s not too steep. Charcoaled meats and vegetables have a simple yet flavorful presence atop fluffy yellow Mediterranean rice. This taste of Morocco is May Avenue’s best-kept secret.

JUN IO R’ S 2601 N.W. EXPRESSWAY, OKC, OK 73112 405.848.5597 | JUNIORSOKC.COM For the past 40+ years, Junior’s has been specializing in great service and even better food. This lunch and dinner spot is one of the ultimate dining experiences in Oklahoma City. Junior’s has a rich history: in its early days, it was known as “the Oilman’s Oasis” because “oilies” finagled some of the biggest deals here during the oil boom. Junior’s offers hand-cut Black Angus steaks, Australian lobster and their famous Caesar salad, which you have to try. Whatever you do, save room for dessert! You can choose from so many delicious homemade treats.

SUPPORTS

GIVING FOR GOOD

YOUTH VILLAGES Welcome to our monthly section in which we highlight local charities and nonprofits of all kinds that are doing great things in our city. We believe change can come in all sizes and at all times. The smallest act can turn around so much for even just one person, animal or place. If we can lift up one small aspect of one life, imagine what we can all do when we come together for the greater good of the people in this amazing city. Let’s continue highlighting the Oklahoma Standard, together.

This year, Youth Villages has helped more than 30,000 young people & their families.

As of 2018, 88% of the children are still living successfully at home with their families.

Youth Villages has programs and services across 20 states.

They serve kids of all ages, but 39% of them are 15-17 years old.

Every child deserves at least a chance, and Youth Villages is giving just that. Youth Villages provides stability and support to families to help any child succeed. They’re providing help for children who face a wide range of emotional, mental and behavioral problems. They’re working to find solutions using proven treatment models that strengthen the child’s family and support systems and dramatically improve their long-term success. They offer options like in-home treatment, Project Safe Place, LifeSet and more. They want to help students find suitable and stable housing, work on communication skills within the family home, finish high school or earn a GED, access community resources, apply for medical insurance and seek physical and mental health services, learn money management skills, and establish lifelong connections with caring adults. They’re doing whatever they can to step up and help our youth flourish, no matter their circumstance, and give them a fighting chance at succeeding in life.

HERE ARE THE WAYS YOU CAN HELP DONATE

GET INVOLVED

Donations help across the board with everything in their mission.

They always need volunteers to help with various tasks, like events and fundraisers.
