Design the branding, identity and promotion for illustrator Tom Moore. Tom specialises in screen printing, so this is something that should be taken into consideration. CONTEXT / PURPOSE:

SUZANNE MOORE

PURPOSE:

SHOPS:

ONLINE:

EXHIBITIONS:

The purpose of this brief is to create an identity for Tom as a screen printer. By creating an online presence it will make it easier for Tom to put his work out in the open. The purpose of the mail out is to generate a presence locally in shops/ cafes etc

The context for where Tom’s prints would ideally be sold would be art’s shops such as Leeds local Colours may vary and Village book shop. Other possibilities would be online such as London print club. These are examples of places Tom’s promotional item would be sent. A personal online shop for Tom is also where his work will be sold.

The promotional pack will also be sent out to online websites which promote curatives such as It’s nice that and blogs which do the same. This way it will create an online presence for Tom, which will lead to exposure.

Above are two exhibitions with a strong focus on print which include screen printing. Toms work is all screen printed so this would be a suitable exhibition to show Tom’s work in.

CONCEPT:

SUZANNE MOORE

SCREEN PRINT:

COLOUR:

DETAIL:

Tom draws all of his work and then re works it by hand for screen print. Each layer of he creates for colour is drawn by hand. The way in which tom produces his work is very tactile, non of it goes through a digital process, so I feel it is important to stick to this approach and for screen print to feature heavily in his identity and promotional pack, to give the right impression.

The colours that are used by Tom are very strong and powerful, they are usually high contrasting colours, with a tenancy to be fluorescent. There is also a strong use of monochrome within Tom’s screen prints which contrasts nicely with his high colour prints. Fluorescent colour and monochrome are a concept I will take forward.

Every single print done by Tom is crammed full of detail. They are not a something you look at once and soak it in, you have to look over and over and overtime you discover something new within the picture. As there is so much going on in the picture I want to find a way to successfully show off all of the detail even on something as small as a business card.

RESEARCH:

SUZANNE MOORE

PROMOTIONAL:

SCREEN PRINT:

EXHIBITION:

For research I have been looking into promotional design that has been created for artists. It has been interesting to see how the graphic designer represents the artist even through the medium of graphic design. This is something I wasn’t to achieve as I want Tom’s work to do all the communicating and show stealing.

All of Toms prints are produced during the medium of screen printing. I went down to screen printing to observe the act from an outsiders view as when I go down there I am usually screen printing myself. It was good to view the motions of mixing the inks, cleaning the screen etc.

I have been conducting some primary research visiting places in Leeds who exhibit artists work. Above are two examples where I have spoken to the manager and they are willing to look at some of Tom’s work in connection to exhibiting it. I have also spoken with a spray paint shop in Leeds who are also interested in looking at Tom’s work.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT:

SUZANNE MOORE

MAPS:

COLOUR:

As I stated before Tom’s work is incredibly detailed and I want people to be able to soak it in and look closer. To develop this concept I have come up with the solution of the a fold out map format where the business card would fold out to one of Tom’s prints.

When talking with Tom about colour and looking over his work it was clear to me that he is interested in bright colours and fluorescent colours feature in his work a lot. Tom decided that the colour that suits him best is a fluorescent pink. BRIEF FOUR
