C L I E N T P R O FI L E: ESIN AND MEHMET

CONCEPT

“Both are originally from Turkey. Mehmet is a soloist at the New York City Ballet and Esin is with the Peridance Contemporary Dance Company... They have to be in top shape for their careers. They are progressive Muslims... Both love entertaining and having their friends over for dinner parties... They have a few pieces which they brought from Turkey and they would like their designer to incorporate these items in the design of their new holiday residence.”

The clients’ desire to honor their heritage developed the idea to create a space that celebrates Turkish culture without being stereotypical. Thus came the old and new concept; Bold patterns and layered textures counteract the subtle, neutral walls and floors and further emphasize the balance of aged and modern, vintage and new. Walls of shelves encompass the main living space in a serpent-like motion and can display all of their Turkish trinkets.

CONCEPT

La Maison du Chocolat is the epitome of Parisian chic. Therefore, Paris will be brought to Cincinnati through luxurious finishes like marble. The company’s website emphasizes its superior aesthetic and relationship to Paris, the fashion capital of the world. Like many high-end retailers, La Maison du Chocolat’s Cincinnati store will feature a window display, drawing people in by showing off its immaculate creations and beautiful packaging. The store’s interior will feature many display places, celebrating its packaging. Some of the displays will celebrate the “CAVE” concept of the brand’s first store will a literal interpretation of a cave’s jagged interior.

CONCEPT

Braod stairs that span the width of the site connect King Cafe to the main campus, creating a smooth and cohesive transition. These stairs are not only functional, but act as a gathering space as well, with steps wide enough to accomodate tables and chairs. A conditioned glass addition offers a year round place to gather and study in the seasons when outdoor seating is not ideal. Indoor plants and the sensation of being completely surrounded by transparent glass further creates an indoor-outdoor space.

CONCEPT

Mashrabiya is the ancient Middle Eastern art of enclosing windows with lattice-like structures adorned with intricate patterns. These patterns protect from the environment while still allowing cool air to flow through. This architectural style was modernized for the Clifton Young Adult Library. A grid facade covers all sides of the building, featuring larger openings where there is less sunlight and more ideal views while smaller openings diffuse direct sunlight and distract from less ideal views.

SITE DIAGRAMS

The South side of the site is hit with direct sunlight, which is a stark contrast from the North-facing front side of the site which is covered in shadows. The South side of the site also features unideal views of parking lots and residential buildings, whereas the North end boasts views of Ludlow Ave, Clifton’s main street, and features the bustle of the up-and-coming town. The stark contrasts between the two ends of the site were vital in developing the concept.

The focal points of the library are the open study areas spanning the front section of each floor, as well as the cafe. The cafe is wrapped in a tight grid pattern, so when the direct sunlight hits the space gets filled with interesting shadows that flow through the adjacent mezzanine all the way to the first floor, drawing you upstairs.
