Dear Snellville Supporter: We are excited to bring you the first issue of the Snellville Spirit magazine for 2012. This is our second year of producing the Snellville Spirit and this is our 6th edition. The Snellville Spirit is produced quarterly by the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association, Inc. (STAT) to celebrate and highlight the diversity of activities, people and accomplishments taking place in the City of Snellville that we enjoy every day. This Spring/Summer edition showcases the 39th Annual edition of the highly popular Snellville Days Festival taking place on the weekend of May 5th and 6th. The Festival kicks off with the Snellville Days Parade in the Towne Center with over 70 entries. Many new additions to the Festival following the Parade at Briscoe Park are featured in this magazine along with exciting photos from last year’s event. The third annual, award-winning Snellville Farmers Market is slated to begin on June 2nd in addition to the ground-breaking for the new Community Garden on April 22nd. Over 50 vendors will provide a wide variety of fresh produce each Saturday from 8 am to noon on the beautiful Towne Green. Our newest event, the Snellville Beach Blast, will take place on Saturday, May 19th with great food, games, rides, and music plus 60 tons of beach sand. This will be an exciting way to bring the beach to Snellville and get your family’s summer off to a great start. GROUND Snellville Community Garden becomes a reality this month

The official ground breaking ceremony for Snellville’s first ever community garden is scheduled for April 22. The project, spearheaded by longtime Snellville residents Kurt and Gretchen Shultz, was created to encourage community pride while providing nutritious food, recreation, and education. The groundbreaking festivities coincide with Arbor Day and volunteers will be planting trees in the designated community orchard to commemorate both the national holiday and the garden’s inauguration. In an official press release committee member Kathy Emanuel wrote, “The community garden will add a new dimension to Snellville’s sense of community. Its design will make it suitable as a school field trip destination, and also includes an amphitheater that can be used for both youth and adult seminars. Master gardeners will be hosting informal instructional classes in the near future, and as the master plan shows, when completed, The Garden [section] will also be ideal as a site for special events.” Located at the intersection of Marigold Road and Sawyer Parkway in Briscoe Park, the first stage of the garden will include 20 to 30 raised beds, with future phases to expand the planting area and build a playground from repurposed materials. “When completed,” Emanuel wrote, “the site will feature a greenhouse, compost area, two small barns and a main pavilion and several smaller pavilions.” “I’d like to see it bring together Snellville. I’m not so much interested in producing these prized tomatoes or anything. Just a neat place to be able to go and get together with friends, neighbors -- meet more people. Get your hands dirty,” Kurt Schultz told the Snellville Patch. The groundbreaking ceremony is open to all ages and family members. The committee is currently looking for volunteers and sponsors to help dig, build, or lend materials. Please contact the committee members for more information about ways to get involved.

New London Theatre On the eve of closing their doors to the public, New London Theatre received a lifeline. After arranging discharge from their lease, chairman of the board Dawn Berlo had already drafted a heart-wrenching letter to Snellville citizens and theatre patrons announcing the theatre’s final performance. New London is Snellville’s only community theatre group. In the final hours, Berlo describes in a press release, the Margins Charity Thrift and Variety Mall donated a new theatre space to the organization rent free. Located at 2338 Henry Clower Boulevard, the raw space is over 60,000 square feet large. After undergoing a flurry of renovation installing seats, mounting drywall, and moving stage equipment, the theatre held its first performance in the new location on March 30, Nunsense 2: The Second Coming. Berlo wrote, “We are thrilled to still be the only community theatre in Snellville and we cherish you, our patrons. I hope that you are as excited as we are in our adventures in our new home.”

DOUBLE WIN at County-Wide Art Competition Brookwood High School art students Georgia Bland and Sharon Pak took home the top prizes at the 2011 Pursuit of Excellence Gwinnett County Art competition held at Cobble Creek Studios. Bland’s charcoal portrait won Grand Prize and Pak’s watercolor abstract was awarded Best of Show. Two North Gwinnett students, Anna Archer and Debi West placed third, and Eyoel Tewdros, also of North Gwinnett, received honorable mentions. The awards were judged by Hatidza Mulic of the Lamar Dodd Art School of the University of Georgia, and the winners are now on exhibit at Cobble Creek Studios in Snellville.

The Southern Gwinnett Community Arts initiative is an innovative new movement to facilitate the development and promotion of the arts in Snellville. The organization aims to bolster arts participation and programming through the stewardship and coordination of opportunities that enrich, inspire, educate, and entertain the community. SGCA has tirelessly researched the socioeconomic benefits of arts and culture and its advantages inside our communities. The organization mission statement cites University of Pennsylvania researchers who found that a high concentration of the arts in a city leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates. SGCA Steering Committee Member Kirk Buis said, “With a coordinated effort between businesses and the city government, SGCA plans to help STAT with the Fall Festival as well as other civic events while planning to host a variety of other events on our own. Ideas we’re considering include artwork in local businesses, sculptures in the community garden as well as cultural events for seniors.” Others heading up the organization are Jonathan Cates, John Duke, Kathi Mardis, and Leslie Raab. This May, you won’t have to drive hours to the coast to dig your toes in the sand. The Snellville Tourism and Trade Association presents the first annual Beach Blast. Over 60 tons of clean white sand will transform the Towne Green into Snellville’s own gold coast. “Each year, I always made it a point to enjoy the beach with my family. There is nothing like a picnic, sand castles, and family enjoying a lazy day. While campaigning for City Council, I thought, why not bring the beach to Snellville?” said City Council member and Event Committee Chair Diane Krause.“Gather up your sunscreen, flip flops, bikini, your wildest Hawaiian flowery shirt, that comfy chaise lounge, and your sand pails - the beach is coming to you!” Taking cues from classic beach parties from Hawaii to Cape Cod, there will be hula dancing, limbo competitions, watermelon eating contests, water slides, badminton, sand castle building, and a full line up of live music entertainment. A great day on the beach is complete with an array delicious food from a variety of vendors grilling hot dogs, hamburgers, sausages and more. Enjoy family friendly entertainment all day with inflatables, trampoline bungee jumps, and cookie walks for the kids, and great sports, dancing, and live music for all ages. See you on the sand!

Snellville Days So Many Ways to Celebrate
SNELLVILLE DAYS 39th Annual Festival is Bigger Than Ever One of the longest running traditions in Snellville is gearing up for its 39th year. Each spring since 1974, citizens flood the streets for a full weekend in May to celebrate community, fellowship, and our special brand of Southern neighborliness. The perfect way to celebrate the beginning of the summer season, the popularity of Snellville Days has grown tremendously each year. Welcoming artisans, live music acts, food vendors, performers, and dance troupes from all over the Southeast, Snellville Days is now one of the largest weekend festivals in the county. This year’s offerings are more diverse and surprising than ever, with nationally acclaimed musical guests and eye-popping live art performances. It all begins with the iconic Snellville Days parade around Wisteria Dr. to City Hall on Saturday morning. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. the parade will include handmade floats, local high school marching bands, cheerleaders, clowns and circus acts, and free giveaways. Several mascots including Maximus, the pink pig, Chopper, and the Chick-fil-a cows will be waltzing down the route entertaining spectators and handing out prizes. Snellville Mayor Kelly Kautz said, “This year’s parade will be fun for all ages, so bring your family and show your Snellville pride before heading to the park for the festival.” Stroll through over 150 food, craft, and sponsor booths and let the children loose on the Kid’s Field of rides, inflatables, and games. It’s the perfect season to mingle with neighbors, support local merchants and artisans, and enjoy beautiful Georgia weather.

SPOTLIGHTS Jordan Rager Performing Saturday at 12 p.m. This seventeen-year-old hometown sensation has gained national recognition with his performances on this season of NBC’s “The Voice.” Touted as “real genuine country singer” by The Voice judge and country music giant Blake Shelton, Jordan is a super star in the making. This will be Rager’s third year at the Snellville Days Festival. The Loganville High School senior has been writing songs and honing his craft since he was 14. The Soul Purpose Band Performing Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Snellville Days favorite from the 1990s is back! Right before the Snellville Beach Blast starts rocking and rolling on the Snellville Towne Green, runners will blast off on 5K and 10K runs through Briscoe Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Sponsored by the Snellville Rotary Club and the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association, these runs will be in addition to a 1-mile Fitness Fun Run for kids â&#x20AC;&#x201C; complete with bulging goodie bags, kid-friendly characters, and a fun fitness warm up. All proceeds from the races will benefit the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association (SCPAAA) and the Snellville Rotary Club. The SCPAAA supports the Police Department by providing volunteers and purchasing needed equipment. Past items purchased by the association included laptops for the Criminal Investigation Division, a fully trained dog for the K-9 unit, spotlights for police cars, push bumpers for patrol cars, and special uniforms for the bicycle officers. The Rotary Club of Gwinnett Sunrise focuses its efforts on the needs in our community. Last summer the Rotary Club partnered with the SE Gwinnett Cooperative Ministries food co-op to deliver free sack lunches to children who participate in the free and reduced-cost lunch programs during the school year. Many parents of these children cannot afford to provide that meal during the summer so the Rotary Club stepped in to help. A main fundraiser for these organizations will be the raffle. Even if you are not participating in the run, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss the opportunity to win a five night Caribbean cruise for two on Carnival Cruise Lines,

taxes and gratuities included. The $10 raffle tickets can be purchased through any member of the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni or Snellville Rotary Club, at the run event, or at the Beach Blast on the Snellville Towne Green from 1:00 pm until just before the drawing at 5:30 pm. Run registration and check-in will begin at 7:00 am just inside the Briscoe Park main gate. The 10K begins at 8:00 am and the 5K starts at 9:00 am. A Fun Run Fun warm-up begins at 9:45 am and the Fun Run itself begins at 10:00 am. All entrants must be registered and checked in at least 30 minutes before the start of their event. Event sponsorships are available. There will also be opportunities to help less fortunate area residents: Give Hunger the Boot will be collecting food and gift cards to be donated to the South Gwinnett Food Co-op at both the run and the Beach Blast.

Snellville Farmer’s Market
The Farmer’s Market committee and volunteer staff have been busy behind the scenes gearing up for the market’s third year starting this June. Since its inception in 2010, the Snellville Farmer’s Market has become a weekly community ritual. Full of colorful vegetables, fresh baked breads, and handmade crafts the Towne Green comes alive with neighbors, strollers, and shopping baskets. After only two short years, the Snellville Farmer’s Market was voted #1 Best Farmer’s Market in Georgia, and #2 in the country by the American Farmland Trust. With over 40 vendors already registered, this year the market promises to be bigger and better than ever. The committee personally visits each vendor booth to assure their stringent standards are always met. In addition to great fresh produce, vendors offer pasta, locally made honeys, spices, cooking rubs, fresh breads, fresh flowers, cakes, cookies, and biscotti. Gretchen Schulz, chairman of the Farmers’ Market Committee credits the volunteers for much of the success: “We are determined to maintain the high quality standards that were set the first year, and have been assisted in this by the great vendors who have joined our market,” she says. The Farmers’ Market, opening on the first Saturday in June, will open every Saturday morning on the Snellville Towne Green lawn from 8 a.m. to noon in hopes to continue fulfilling its goal of encouraging community pride and spirit in Snellville. Peel eggs, cut in half and remove yolks. Rinse and pat dry egg whites. Place egg yolks in a bowl. Mash yolks and stir in all remaining ingredients. Using a teaspoon, spoon yolk filling into eggwhites. If desired, drizzle with a little additional barbeque sauce for garnish. refrigerate until served.

BRANDON’S SUCCOTASH 1 clove garlic, sliced 1 ounce shallots, minced 1/4 pound corn and green peas, mixed 1/2 pound okra, stems removed, then cut in half 1/4 pound Sungold cherry tomatoes 1/4 cup white wine 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 ounces (1/2 stick) butter In a large skillet over medium heat, saute garlic, shallots, corn and peas for 3 minutes. Add okra and tomatoes and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Add wine and lemon juice and cook for a few minutes or until liquid is reduced. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Serves 4.
