Dear Snellville Supporter: With summer almost over, and fall, football and the holiday season ahead, you sometimes don’t know whether to slow down or speed up! Snellville Tourism and Trade had its busiest summer yet, with Star Spangled Snellville drawing a huge crowd to the Towne Green, the recent Live on the Lawn concert with the Metro Jazz Club and Popcorn in the Park movies in June, July and August. And, let’s not forget how our community came together to benefit Aimee Copeland during our Sizzlin’ Summer Weekend – renamed Aimee’s Weekend – which raised $19,000 to help her family cover expenses. As this is being written, we are in the middle of planning the third annual Snellville Fall Festival, set for October 20th. You can look forward to a day of arts and crafts, music, contests and more, so plan on attending. The Snellville Farmers’ Market is having another outstanding year. It seems like every time I stop by on a Saturday morning, all the booth spaces are filled with vendors selling fresh, local produce, baked goods, meats and more. The addition of entertainment on the stage during the market makes the Towne Green the place to be on Saturday mornings. The market is open through the end of September, and I hope you’ll have a chance to visit before it ends its season. Planning and producing all the activities Snellville Tourism and Trade puts on during the year takes a lot of time and effort from our volunteers, and we are always looking for people who want to become involved. In November, we will hold an election of STAT Board members, who serve a term of one year. If this is something you would be interested in doing, visit our website Snellvillepride.com and complete an application form. Applications are due by September 30th so our nominating committee can talk to candidates and make recommendations for board positions. On a beautiful summer morning this past June, 125 local runners took their marks in Snellville’s Briscoe Park for the Second Annual “Run of the ‘Ville” 5K and Half Marathon. The USA Track and Field-sanctioned-andinsured race was organized by local businessman James Lowe, Director of Spincycle Sports Marketing. “As the only Gwinnett company with a long history of specializing in race management and production, Spincycle Sports has been commissioned by Snellville’s Tourism & Trade Association to execute this event for the past two years,” explained Lowe. “The benefit of a second year event is that we were able to make a few changes based on reactions we received from runners in the inaugural “Run of the ‘Ville”. Based on comments from last year, the course was modified and the start time was moved up to 7am. As word continues to spread about this run through the City of Snellville’s scenic park, Lowe expects next year’s event to be even bigger and better. The 2013 “Run of the ‘Ville” will be held in conjunction with Snellville Days. SNELLVILLE GIVES

GENEROUSLY ON AIMEE’S WEEKEND by: Kathy Emanuel Snellville area residents came together on a June weekend for a two day event benefitting South Gwinnett High School graduate Aimee Copeland, who had contracted a rare flesh eating disease that resulted in multiple amputations. Originally scheduled by Snellville Tourism and Trade to be the city’s annual Sizzlin’ Summer Weekend, the organization and community came together to turn the event into a fundraiser to aid the Copeland family with their expenses. An array of singers and bands, including Corey Durkin, Brandon Cox, The Hero Band and The Dam Band, volunteered their time on Saturday. Friday night, the crowd enjoyed the music of Jordan Rager, The Elements of Style and headliner Banks and Shane. Other celebrities donated their time as well, including former UGA quarterback David Greene, the Atlanta Falcons Cheerleaders, the Gwinnett Braves Chopper and local TV personalities. An army of volunteers worked 12- to 14- hour days to plan and implement an outstanding event. Volunteers manned a booth collecting donations and selling pins and T-Shirts featuring AJC editorial cartoonist Mike Luckovich’s “Aimee the True Fighter” drawing. Other volunteers manned a booth where attendees could write get-well messages to Aimee on a huge banner in return for a donation. Food vendors offered special promotions, with the proceeds going to benefit the family. At the July 9th Snellville City Council meeting, with council members, STAT board members and numerous volunteers proudly watching, Snellville Tourism and Trade President Don Britt presented Andy and Paige Copeland with a check for $19,000.00 from the weekend’s proceeds. Aimee is working hard at her therapy and returned home in mid-August where workers and volunteers, led by Pulte Homes, recently completed a 1,956 square foot addition to the home designed to accommodate her needs, all at no cost to the family.

ON CANVAS Art on the Wall in City Hall is Snellville’s First Foray onto the Fine Arts Stage by: Kasie Bolling

“The Beginning is the Most Important Part of the Work.” ~ Plato Staying true to the credo: “Where Everybody is Proud to Be Somebody,” the City of Snellville has provided local artists with a unique platform to display their art. What was once a veritable blank canvas – an unadorned Community Room in City Hall – now serves as an art gallery, the walls of which are hung with a regular rotation of the works of gifted Snellville artists. Open to all, a leisurely stroll through this space gives visitors a clear view of the talent that runs deep within the city, as well as a hint of what Kelly Kautz hopes to have in store for Snellville during her tenure as mayor. Elected in November 2011, Kautz made clear her support for the arts throughout her campaign – noting that studies show that promotion of the arts in a city often has a positive impact on its economic development. Before becoming mayor, she had been active in forming organizations to coordinate the different facets of art in Snellville, had worked with the Board of Directors of the non-profit New London Theatre, and had first proposed a resolution for Art on the Wall in City Hall to then Mayor Jerry Oberholtzer and City Council four years ago. With the appointment of three art jurors – Deborah Kepes, Jean Baldwin, and Jonathan Cates – in January 2012, placement of a special gallery art hanging system in early spring, and the works of the first artist displayed in June 2012, Mayor Kautz’ vision has become a colorful reality. “My appreciation for art grew after I met my husband, Robb,” explained Kautz. “He has a degree in art from the University of Pittsburgh, is an artist and started his teaching career as an art teacher. Trips to Europe and tours of museums have served to broaden my admiration for the talent and technique behind the art. Of all of the talent we have right here in our own city, there really hasn’t been a place to showcase it properly. Many local artists had told me of the need for an art gallery, and

this seemed like the perfect way to display their work while making City Hall seem more inviting at the same time. It truly is a place that is of and for the people of Snellville.” With Art on the Wall in City Hall now in full swing, Mayor Kautz has set her sights on broadening Snellville’s artistic appeal even further. In July 2012, $10,000 of the city’s annual budget was allocated by the City Council for the formation of an Art Commission. Among her many visions, Kautz is particularly fond of transforming Snellville’s “bridge to nowhere” into an amphitheatre and cultural arts center, the development of a Fine Arts Festival, and the placement of hand-painted fiberglass snail sculptures near area businesses – similar to the famed painted cows of Chicago, Illinois and the multihued bulldogs of Athens, Georgia. “Art on the Wall in City Hall wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our three art jurors, as well as that of Karen McKay and Melissa Arnold at the staff level,” insisted Kautz. “Deb Kepes, Jean Baldwin and Jonathan Cates have done a wonderful job securing the local artists for exhibits. So far, the city has had exhibits by John Duke, Andrew King, and Nedra Bailey. The art jurors have future exhibits lined up through the end of the year. There is no shortage of talented artists in the Snellville area. We’re really proud of what we’ve done so far and hope it’s just the first step.” Upcoming rotations of Art on the Wall in City Hall will include the work of students from Snellville Middle School and Brookwood High School. Snellville sure knows how to throw a party and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just what the Snellville Tourism and Trade Association (STAT) did with their annual Star Spangled Snellville 4th of July celebration. Over 15,000 were in attendance to celebrate Americaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday and a wonderful time was had by all, despite near record temperatures. Throughout the day, everyone enjoyed the music of Maria Cox, Thad Clark, the Fine Line Band and The Gwinnett Community Band. Laughing children, accompanied by their parents and grandparents, enthusiastically filled the ever-popular inflatables, the wet inflatable and the bungee jump. The Choo Choo Express Train wandered its way around the area constantly filled with smiling faces, some of them red, purple and blue from the snow cones. In addition, many of those smiling faces were coated with frosting and dripping watermelon after participating in the cookie and cupcake walks and the watermelon eating contests. The frosting-filled, double decker chocolate chip cookie prizes were a huge incentive! The spectacular fireworks display made for an exhilarating ending to a great day. NATIONAL NIGHT OUT BRINGS RESIDENTS AND POLICE TOGETHER by: Kathy Emanuel

Snellville residents had the opportunity to learn about crime fighting and self-protection at the annual National Night Out on August 7th, presented by Target and the Snellville Police Department. Hundreds gathered on the Towne Green to see demonstrations by the Snellville Police and a wide variety of exhibitors. A demonstration by the K-9 officers and their human counterparts clearly illustrated what not to do to a police officer when a K-9 officer is present, while impressing attendees with the training and capabilities of these amazing dogs. The self-defense demonstration presented by AMAI Karate gave some good pointers on how to protect yourself. And the “what to do in case of a traffic stop” demo was interesting in addition to being informative. Members of the Snellville Police Department were out in full force to exhibit new and updated equipment and techniques, including the new electronic automobile tag reading system, all of which are intended to increase their efficiency and your safety. In addition, officers answered questions, distributed information and gift items, and were available to address citizens’ concerns. Members of the Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni were present to answer questions about the Academy. National Night Out is a nationwide effort to heighten awareness of crime and strengthen the public’s participation in local anti-crime efforts and is sponsored by the Target Corporation and Snellville Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association. Community News COUNCILMAN DREAMS OF A NEW VETERANS MEMORIAL AT CITY HALL by: Kathy Emanuel

The City of Snellville may soon have a new memorial to commemorate its veterans, according to Mayor ProTem Tom Witts. Witts presented a preliminary design for the monument at the August 13th City Council meeting. As envisioned by Witts and former City Councilman and architect Chad Smith, the monument will include a “wall of veterans”, an eternal flame, and a waterfall. The Veterans’ Memorial Flame of Freedom will be installed at City Hall. Witts, a veteran, had originally hoped to be able to relight the eternal flame on the Snellville Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial, which had burned for 20 years before being moved to the new City Hall in 2005. For years, he participated in a ceremony at the memorial, laying a wreath on the monument each Memorial Day. When relighting the original memorial proved impractical, Witts began to think of a new monument, which would recognize the contributions of all veterans. Working with Smith, he came up with the current design. The memorial will be completely funded by donations and through the sale of personalized tiles and brick pavers. vendors, and global bazaars. Bring the whole family for an educational day dedicated to culture, food, and fun. On the stage there will be dance performances including Latin and Malaysian, people dressed in traditional costumes, martial art exhibits including a Japanese swordsmanship demonstration, belly dancer, African drums and cooking and craft demonstrations. There will also be a kids international art contest going on through the local schools in which students participate by submitting a photograph, drawing or painting depicting an expression of cultural identity and heritage. Snellville Fall Festival It’s Time for the

Join with family and friends to stroll and shop at over 70 arts and craft vendors lined up along Oak Road. Enjoy the great festival atmosphere, with music on the main stage, day-long activities, and plenty of food to enjoy. A Kid’s Zone will keep the kids busy all day with inflatables, bungee Jump, and hayrides. Favorites from last year will be back, including face painting, a variety of activities for children and adults and, of course, a costume contest. This year, adults will be able to enter, so Mom and Dad, Grandma and Grandpa get those costumes ready! Returning is one of last year’s most popular events, the pie and cake contest. Last year it was almost as much fun to “ooh” and “ahh” over the gorgeous entries as it was to actually enter. And everyone enjoyed sampling the delicious entries after the judging was over. Engage your creative side and enter the scarecrow contest where your creation will be judged for cash prizes. All scarecrows will be on display during the festival and there will be cash prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. REBRAND SCENIC HIGHWAY The shopping experience along Scenic Highway/Highway 124 will soon be more integrated and streamlined if things go according to plan. By: Crystal Huskey Foy believes that the direction that the city council and mayor are going in will bring back a strong sense of community to Snellville, and he and his family want to be a part of that. He notes that, back in the 80s and 90s, Highway 78 was the place where businesses wanted to be. The marketplace moved away from 78 and toward 124 a few years ago, and now, it seems to be migrating further north. “There’s a lot of growth going toward Lawrenceville,” he said, “which pulls the traffic flow that way.” A local business think tank, spearheaded by Economic Development Manager Eric Van Otteren, has been meeting for close to a year now, focusing on the shops along Scenic Highway. The initiative, called Shop on Scenic, is a partnership between the city and local businesses. As of now, over 30 business owners meet regularly the first Thursday of the month to discuss plans of how they can work together to improve the business district in town. Branding will play a huge role in the marketing strategy. “We’re trying to create that destination,” said Big Frog T-shirts owner Claude Baham. “We want Shop on Scenic to be the premier shopping area in Gwinnett County.” Snellville is taking great strides when it comes to business development. Recently, the city was awarded the Regional Prosperity and Economic Development CREATE award by the Atlanta Regional Commission for its partnership with the Entrepreneur Alliance at South Gwinnett High School. The Shop on Scenic initiative is just the latest in a string of successful programs to encourage entrepreneurship and business development. “We want to expose the fact that you can get anything you want on Highway 124,” said Stevi-Bs owner Michael Foy. “The tactic is to build a group of local merchants to support that goal.”

Taking a proactive approach to the direction the shoppers are going is crucial to the vitality of the city. “We need a group that grows together and works together as a team,” he added. Affinity marketing strategies and co-branding are among some of their ideas to tie the area together. Businesses involved could share advertising, and in a concept similar to one in Athens, Ga., put a sticker on their business windows that identifies them as part of the Shop on Scenic initiative. Some other plans that have been discussed are walking paths in the area, trolley carts and distinct signage that identifies the area clearly. Sam Thomas, owner of About Face Skin Care, has worked alongside Foy, Baham and Van Otteren to get this concept from dream to reality. Thomas grew up in Snellville, and now operates his business close to where he lived as a child. Entrepreneurship Alliance

The Entrepreneurship Alliance is an entrepreneurship education program aimed at teaching the youth of Snellville the basics of starting their own business. The class serves as a segue for students opening their own ventures through entrepreneurship and innovation. This yearlong class taught by passionate teachers is accompanied by field trips, business mentors, guest entrepreneur speakers, entrepreneurs-in-residence and an annual Community Investor Fund to assist in the start up and growth phases of the most successful Entrepreneurship Alliance businesses. With a tremendously successful first year, including winning the Atlanta Regional Commissionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s CREATE Award, the Entrepreneurship Alliance is excited to expand the program. Snellville schools participating in the Entrepreneurship Alliance now include South Gwinnett High School, Brookwood High School, Snellville Middle School and Crews Middle School. In our economy it is of great importance that students are being taught there are other options than simply applying for a job. While possibly not an easier route, entrepreneurship allows you to pursue a career in what you are most passionate about and to be your own boss. We look forward to another remarkably successful year and the businesses that will start and grow from our youth in Snellville. Our first field trip will be to the Featherbone Communiversity on October 17th for the Masters of Entrepreneurship Innovation program. Entrepreneurship Alliance at

BROOKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Cindy Bazzell, the Entrepreneurship Alliance teacher at Brookwood High School, began her career graduating from the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia with a dual major in marketing and management information systems. As part of her program, she interned at State Farm working in project coordination and web development. Offered a full time position, she realized it was not for her. “One day I had a realization that I would still be sitting in a cubicle, looking at the same blue walls, with minimal human interaction for many years to come…I dreaded going to work.” Bazzell decided to change her career path and returned to The University of Georgia to emerge with a Masters of Education degree (M.A.T.) in Occupational Studies and certified in both marketing and business education. “I wanted to make a difference and be the catalyst for someone in their life. I chose the road less taken and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.” During her first five years at Brookwood High School, Bazzell taught computer programming and served as head coach of the ninth grade and then the junior varsity girls’ basketball teams. She also coached girls’ softball. In 2008, she took over the Marketing Program and has since earned numerous awards for her professional accomplishments

including being named Brookwood High School’s 2012 Teacher of the Year. Bazzell was also a finalist for the 2009 Georgia Marketing Education Association (GMEA) New Teacher of the Year. In 2009, she returned again to UGA earning her Educational Specialist (Ed.S) in Workforce Education, and this past year successfully completed the Industry Certification process sponsored by the American Marketing Association to earn a $5,000 grant for the Brookwood Marketing Program. Bazzell replies, “Teaching isn’t about awards or numbers at all; it is about the faces sitting in front of me every day in my classroom. It is about the individual personalities searching for their place in life, and if I can reach out to them in just the way they need, then I have done my job. How my students use the knowledge they learn in my classroom to lead the next generation is my greatest accomplishment of all.” This year will be the inaugural year of the Entrepreneurship Alliance with the city of Snellville and Brookwood High School Marketing. Bazzell is very excited about this new frontier of possibilities unfolding in her classroom. “To compete in today’s marketplace, students need to be challenged with cutting edge, current, relevant, and engaging lessons that can be applied to their daily lives. Education should allow students to realize their abilities now and envision their potential five or even ten years down their personal and professional path…That’s where the Entrepreneurship Alliance comes in. This partnership is going to provide an invaluable real-world learning tool for these students that will positively impact their futures for years to come.”

HIGH SCHOOL It has been said that wisdom comes with age. Even though The South Gwinnett High School Entrepreneurship Alliance is only entering it’s second year, it is with greater understanding of entrepreneurship education that we welcome our newest group of students. Education is alive and well in the Entrepreneurship Program at South Gwinnett High School. Last year, at the conclusion of our academic calendar, the first “Snellville Shark Tank” generated some excellent presentations. Ruchi Darji of Khoobsurrat Productions presented her business of Henna Tattooing and Eyebrow Threading to the Shark Tank Team in pursuit of venture capital. Brandon Shirley and Marianne Javier shared their business plan for a Smart Phone App consulting business. Adomya Dawit showed the members of the capital board how the sales of her “Peace of Love” bracelets were leading all new ventures in units sold, and shared how she was giving a large percentage of her profits to help feed starving children around the world and in Snellville. The leader of the pack though, was John Gayden whose passion for his new business “IPODRESQ” could be seen by his customers. He repairs today’s new electronic communication devices. Such great stories, of new businesses, all of which remain open and generating

income for their owners today, were the positive results of our first year. The Alliance, however, also received an education. We learned about the best use of mentors. We learned about the best use of our business community which supported our new program so strongly. We learned about how to take advantage of the services, experience and business leaders, all who believed in and helped make the program so productive in it’s first year. We also learned about better ways to get the students fired up about being business owners and about how to become contributing active citizens of the Snellville community. As we enter year two, we are excited about our first year of success. We are even more excited about sharing what we have learned with a new group of students entering the Entrepreneurship Alliance this year. The group is larger. The group is more interested. The group is more motivated to get their businesses started. Peruse the previous pages and look at the pictures of the future business leaders of our community. They may look like kids in these pictures, but on the inside, some of them are already motivated, energized individuals who will one day rise to lead our community, our state and beyond. We are blessed to have such a program in our community and we are blessed to have students who want to take advantage of the opportunities they have been given. We are blessed to have a group of community leaders who believe in the program and the students who are a part of it, and want to continue to make it even stronger. The South Gwinnett High School Entrepreneurship Alliance is still in it’s infancy, but with a bit more experience under our belt, we charge forward in the confidence that what we have already learned, will be built upon to make our community and students even better in the upcoming year.

Snellville Farmers’ Market SUCCESSFUL

Once open, volunteers can be found directing traffic on Oak Road to help customers cross the street and also walking throughout the booths to promote the familyfriendly atmosphere. The Snellville Farmers’ Market has become an outstanding example of a self-supporting, all-volunteer project that has built community spirit and brought national recognition to the city.

The third season for the Snellville Farmers’ Market will soon come to an end. The last market will be Saturday, September 29th. The market has been held every Saturday since June 2nd from 8:00am to noon on the Towne Green in front of City Hall. This season has been the best thus far. The market earned a reputation last year as one of the nation’s best when it was voted the #1 market in Georgia and the #3 market in the nation in its size category in a contest sponsored by American Farmland Trust. That award-winning reputation has attracted more vendors to the market this year, resulting in lots of variety in produce and other local food products. The market has also featured more entertainment this year as a result of the city’s purchase of a mobile stage. One of the most popular entertainers has been Thad Clark, a member of the Snellville Police Department, who has taken to the stage on the first Saturday of each month. Other local bands have performed and one Saturday the stage was turned over to approximately 50 children from First Baptist Church of Snellville’s drama program who presented 101 Dalmatians. Many thanks to the all-volunteer Snellville Farmers’ Market committee members who set policies for the market, review and approve vendor applications and make farm visits to ensure all produce is locally grown. On Saturday mornings during the season they start arriving at the Towne Green at 5:30 am to get set up, direct vendors to their booth spaces and help those vendors who need assistance setting up their tents.

DELICIOUS FALL RECIPES APPLE-PEAR SALAD 2/3 cup vegetable oil 1/3 cup lemon juice 1-1/2 tablespoons poppy seeds 2 teaspoons finely chopped onion 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup sugar 1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley (may used dried) 1 pound romaine lettuce, torn into pieces 1 cup roasted, salted cashews ½ cup dried blueberries (may use cranberries) 1 large apple, cored and thinly sliced 1 large pear, cored and thinly sliced ½ cup Parmesan cheese, shaved, shredded or grated

A MESS O’ PEAS 1 quart water 1 smoked ham hock 8 cups fresh field peas, rinsed (use a variety of peas) 4 to 6 hot peppers in vinegar, drained 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper Bring the water and ham hock to a boil in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 30 minutes. Stir in peas and remaining ingredients; cover and simmer for 30 minutes or until peas are tender. Serves 10 to 12. To make dressing, combine vegetable oil, lemon juice, poppy seeds, onion, mustard, salt, sugar and parsley; mix until thoroughly combined. In a large bowl, combine romaine, cashews, blueberries, apple slices and pear slices. Toss with dressing and top with cheese. Chill thoroughly before serving. Serves 6 to 8.
