Chairman’s Message This year we celebrate “Our Derbyshire”, the wonderful area we are fortunate to live in, with its craggy rocks, hills and rolling countryside. It is a beautiful county steeped in heritage, a really unique gem in these islands. This year’s Carnival is dedicated to the memory of Derek Cook, The Community Association’s Hon Secretary who passed away in the latter half of 2012. Derek was a lovely man and a driving force behind the DCA, with a steady hand on the tiller since 1985. He epitomised everything I love about this village, he is truly missed but his legacy Derek Cook through the Carnival and our other activities will live on. Derek was and is the “D” in Duffield! This week of entertainment and festivities culminating with Carnival day would not happen without the efforts of the Carnival Committee, volunteers, advertisers, affiliated organisations and of course you for taking part, so many thanks to all involved. Have a great fun packed week, I certainly aim to!

Richard Keogh to open this year’s Carnival The Carnival is being officially opened this year by Derby County Defender Richard Keogh, who will be ably assisted by Rammie! Richard joined Derby County FC in July 2012 after Nigel Clough’s lengthy pursuit ended with the in-demand centre-back joining the Rams for an undisclosed fee from Coventry City. No sooner had Keogh put pen-to-paper, then he was installed as Captain by Clough in the absence of talismanic defender Shaun Barker. Keogh's leadership skills and ability to organise from the back making the decision an easy one for the Derby chief to make. A centre-back who will put his body on the line for the team, Keogh is viewed as a key signing and despite being just 26, he brings considerable first-team experience with him to Pride Park and his progress had been monitored by Clough and his coaching team for some time. As well as recording 40 league appearances at Ashton Gate he also gained first-team experience on loan at Wycombe, Huddersfield, Carlisle and Cheltenham prior to sealing a permanent switch to Carlisle in 2008. Last season, despite Coventry's relegation from the Championship, Keogh's performances did not go unnoticed as he walked away with the Player of the Year and Players' Player of The Year awards - racking up 91 consecutive appearances in the process.

Rammie will be making an appearance at this year’s Carnival, keeping an eye on Derby’s Richard Keogh no doubt! He is a fun representative of Derby County Football Club, and a figure that unites the entire county so all you football fans keep an eye out for him. Derby County Football Club fit well with this year’s theme of ‘Our Derbyshire’ so we can’t wait to welcome him to Duffield.

Booking the Band Performances are typically around two hours including a short break. There are usually around 40 players. We provide players, instruments and the music. Vision Dance School “The enjoyment of dance The school is built on a foundation of successful development of pupils of all ages and abilities. Ability is not a barrier to enjoyment of dance. Development is a result of ensuring a child/pupil wants to attend classes and this in turn is a result of the school ethos of mutual respect and the pursuit of individual development for all pupils. Vision offers Melody Bear (registered) classes from the age of 2.5 years, introducing children to dance and movement. From school age, children are offered classes in Ballet and Tap which progress through the National Association of Teachers of Dancing up to and including professional level. All pupils are encouraged to take examinations to help them develop their dancing with a structured, disciplined approach. As the children mature and progress we offer Modern Stage Classes to widen their dancing style and increase flexibility, rhythm and technique.

Suffering Fools are a local group who play a mix of their own songs and covers from the likes of Neil Young, Blondie,The Pierces, Stones and Tom Petty. They have evolved from a more acoustic folk/rock style into something a little rockier. The Cubists were formed with the aim of playing original music. A mix of rock, blues, reggae, jazz and pop with more than a little hint of humour in the lyrics, and songs that sound new and fresh but at the same time strangely familiar! This year’s headline act Sensational Hot Rocks Band keeps with the local theme; albeit a band comprising musicians with a strong pedigree, having toured throughout Europe and shared stages with artists such as The Stranglers, Big Country and Thin Lizzy. A review of a recent Sensational Hot Rocks Band gig stated: “If you’re into live music with a leaning towards rock, played by musicians who clearly love what they do, then a Sensational Hot Rocks Band gig has something for just about everyone”. Massive Live Lounge in Small Marquee This year we have a Live Lounge competition involving a mixture of bands and singer-song writers performing from 7-9pm. The event will also include a performance from the renowned local youth band MBlock before the prize is announced. Derbyshire County Council is supporting this event with an Arts Grant. * Admission to the Band Concert is included in the Carnival admission ticket.

Calidoscopio Carnival Drummers We’re very proud that this year’s procession will be led by our local Community Drumming Group Calidoscopio Carnival Drummers. Calidoscopio have been involved in many Derbyshire Carnivals plus performances at various festivals and events including Derby Feste. They were formed in 2009 as an offshoot of Kaleidoscope Community Music and Choir and are based in Derby. Their repertoire covers sounds and ‘grooves’ such as Samba Reggae, Samba Funk and Funky Timbabalada. As an added bonus Calidoscopio will stay and play a session in the Main Arena during the afternoon which will enable even those further back in the procession to properly enjoy the sounds and rhythm. If after all this you feel inspired to try drumming yourself the Group hold beginners classes each Saturday morning in the Community Hall on Stepping Lane, Derby.

BOB HOGG SHEEP RACING AND DOG AND DUCK DISPLAY

This year we are very pleased to announce that we have, as our main act, Bob Hogg with Sheep Racing plus a Dog and Duck Display!  Bob has toured Britain for many years and has an excellent reputation for professional and highly entertaining displays in which the dogs work sheep and ducks. We are pleased to report that we have three displays arranged. In one, Bob’s sheepdogs will work ducks around an obstacle course, down a slide and into a pool. We also have two sheep races! The race-sheep will be identifiable with different colour vests and introduced to us individually with their history, form etc. so that hopefully you will be able to cheer the sheep of your choice and, if you choose, have a "little flutter!" That's the plan, however the sheep may decide otherwise! Anything could happen on the day!

It will be a Live Lounge competition involving a mixture of bands and singer-songwriters performing from 7-9pm in the small marquee. The event will also include a performance from the renowned local band MBlock before the prize is announced. Massive is a community project serving the young people of Duffield. It opens every Friday night: 4-6pm for ages 11-14 and 7-10pm for ages 14-18, providing a range of activities including pool, table football, air hockey, Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, three computers with internet access, three general social spaces and board games. There is a tuck shop; a staffed kitchen sells a small range of non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Massive also hosts regular workshops, activities and events, such as the Carnival’s Live Lounge Event. Massive, with support from a wide range of local organisations, is giving young people in Duffield a much needed space to call their own.

Sensational Hot Rocks Band With three of the five band members living in Duffield and Hazelwood, this year’s headline act keeps with the local theme; albeit a band comprising musicians with a strong pedigree, having toured throughout Europe and shared stages with artists such as The Stranglers, Big Country and Thin Lizzy. A review of a recent Sensational Hot Rocks Band gig stated: “If you’re into live music with a leaning towards rock, played by musicians who clearly love what they do, then a Sensational Hot Rocks Band gig has something for just about everyone”. We think this sums up the band pretty well. But don’t let the ‘Hot Rocks’ tag mislead you into thinking you’re in for a night of heavy metal. Sure, you’ll hear classics from bands like Queen, Thin Lizzy and ACDC, but the heads-down boogie is well balanced by songs from Goo Goo Dolls, The Killers, Stereophonics, Foo Fighters, Oasis, Rod Stewart & the Faces and, of course, ‘the sensational’ Alex Harvey, amongst many others. SHRB Line Up Lead singer Ray Von has possibly got one of the best voices for this brand of music you’ll have heard on the semi-pro music circuit. Lead guitarist, Lance Boardman and bassist, Pete Schofield, have toured in a band with former Thin Lizzy favourite, Brian Robertson. The talents of Joss Read (drums) and Mark Harrison (guitar / keyboards) complete the line-up and, collectively, they make for a very ‘sensational’, good humoured night of classic live music. Suffering Fools We are a local Derby and Ilkeston based band comprising an eclectic mix of experienced (that means getting on a bit!) musicians. We play a mix of our own songs and covers from the likes of Neil Young, Blondie, The Pierces, Stones and Tom Petty. The band has been together 6 years and in it's current guise for 2 years, having morphed from a more acoustic folk/rock style into something rockier. Last year we played the Ashleyhay Festival and this year we have gigs lined up in Nottingham over the summer. Drummer Ben and Guitarist Phil have played together for far too long, and can claim 80's (I said we were getting on) T.V exposure with folk rockers Spitting Feathers. Richard on Bass and vocalist Sue are longstanding members of the 'Fools' and most recent addition, lead guitarist Simon, still moonlights with the notorious 'Seven Bellies King'. Why 'Suffering Fools'?..... ask Sue!

How Does Duffield Carnival Work? A strange question you may think, but how many people know how the Carnival actually happens? Your annual Carnival Week is run by a small band of volunteers for the benefit of everyone in the Duffield Community. Over the year the Carnival Crew get together to plan and put into action a programme of events to make Carnival week the highlight it is. During the actual week volunteer numbers are swelled by partners, friends and any other willing helpers. You may be surprised to read that to stage Carnival Week costs close to £10,000 – the hire of marquees, toilets, generators, acts, artistes, printing programmes and much more. All proceeds raised by the Carnival go towards covering this – so please do pay for your admission and don’t begrudge a profit on the beer. This year we have received a small arts grant from Derbyshire County Council too. We do not employ anyone. All the people you see putting things up, collecting litter/glasses, marshalling are unpaid volunteers. So give them a hand…a smile….or an hour of your time. The Carnival is an investment in the community and to this end we support, and are supported by other village entities, e.g. the bar is run by Duffield Cricket Club (another organisation important to the village). We look for musicians and other suppliers from within the village/locale. The Carnival is a sub-set of the Duffield Community Association (DCA) whose constitution can be summarised as enhancing village life in Duffield. All the funds raised by the DCA are ploughed back into the community in one form or another – this includes the Carnival. The Carnival is for no single person or organisation…it is for all of us. Please, join in and enjoy it.

Nigel Hooker.
