ideas to experiencing Iceland

1

Seyðisfjörður

Seyðisfjörður will be your first and last point of call in Iceland when you travel with Smyril Line. This is where MS Norröna docks. In summer Seyðisfjörður’s cultural scene blossoms. There are also several cafés and restaurants in the little village, which is home to a traditional fishing society of around 700 inhabitants.

Húsavík

3

Gain insight into the life of the imposing and majestic whales in the sea around Iceland with a trip to Húsavík. Visit the whale museum and go on a whale safari for an opportunity to experience the whales and many ocean birds up close. It is a chance to experience local wildlife in its natural habitat. If you have more time to spend in Husavík, why not try the new GeoSea sea baths? It is a rejuvenating experience for the body and soul while enjoying nature in a unique manner. The Goðafoss waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls in Iceland. The Goðafoss waterfall is situated a 30 minutes drive east of Akureyri and well worth a stop.

4 8

Akureyri

Visit Iceland’s second largest city Akureyri just south of the Polar Circle. In Akureyri you will find the towering Church of Akureyri in pure art-deco style from 1940. It was designed by the Icelandic architect Guðjon Samuelson. With around 17,000 inhabitants the city is, understandably, easy to navigate. It only has one shopping street, but compensates with myriad little side streets with quirky cafés and restaurants.

2

Mývatn, Námaskarð & Dettifoss

Lake Mývatn is one of the highlights of North Iceland. It is rich in bird life and Sigurgeir’s Bird Museum is well worth a visit. Mývatn Nature Bath lies east of the village Reykjahlíð. Here you can enjoy a relaxing dip in the naturally warm water. Tip: Mývatn Nature Bath is often called ‘Mini Blue Lagoon’. If you are looking for an authentic bathing experience at a reasonable price, we recommend a visit to Mývatn Nature Bath where you will not have to queue. At Námaskarð you can experience the power of nature first hand. The boiling mud pits and yellow sulphur formations are an unforgettable sight. Don’t miss out on the waterfall Dettifoss, which is only half an hour away from Mývatn. With a height of 44 m and span of 110m, Dettifoss has the greatest volume of water of any waterfall in Europe.

5

Westfjords

Are you ready for an insider tip? The Westfjords Region is one of Iceland’s best-kept secrets. Each fjord is a world in itself and every mountain competes for your attention. Even the least remarkable parts of Westfjords radiatenatural beauty and are almost impossible not to explore. Westfjords Region is home to Látrabjarg, the westernmost point in Europe and one of Europes biggest bird cliffs.

6

Golden Circel

The Golden Circle is Iceland’s most popular tourist route. The 300 km round trip sets off from the capital Reykjavík to southern Iceland and back again. There are three main stops on the way: þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal area Haukadalur, which is best known for the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Reykjavík is Iceland’s capital and largest city. It covers 274 km2 and has around 200,000 inhabitants. There is much to see and do in Reykjavík. We would particularly highlight Hallgríms Church, Harpa Concert Hall and Laugardalslaug outdoor pool and spa.

Skaftafell National Park

9

Skaftafell National Park was founded in 1967, but in 2008 it became part of the larger national park Vatnajökull. Combined they cover roughly 14,200 km2 making them Europe’s second largest national park. Skaftafell National Park lies at the foothills of Iceland’s secondlargest glacier Vatnajökull, which covers an area of 8,100 km2 and is 1 km deep in places. We recommend the 1-hour walk to the stunning waterfall Svartifoss.

Vestmannaeyjar

Vestmannaeyjar is an archipelago of volcanic origin just south of Iceland. It is made up of 14 islands of which only one, Heimaey, is inhabited. It has around 4,000 residents. The area is, like the rest of Iceland, a land of active volcanoes. In the 20th century the islanders experienced two major eruptions. The first was in 1963 when a 3½-year-long eruption created the island Surtsey. The other was when the volcano Eldfell on Heimaey erupted in 1973. It led to the rapid evacuation of most of the island’s inhabitants. Travel here to experience bird-life and nature unlike anywhere else in Iceland.

7

8

Vík

The village Vík is the southern most village in Iceland, it is on the Ring Road around 180 km from Reykjavík, approximately 2-hour drive. Iceland has several volcanic beaches, but Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach is far the most striking and famous in Iceland. It is easily accessible from the main road, which runs through Vík in Mýrdal and a walk along the Black Sand Beach is a must.

Jökulsárlón

10

Jökulsárlón is Iceland’s bestknown glacial lagoon. It is located on the south-eastern section of Iceland’s Ring Road, comfortably nestled about half-way between Skaftafell National Park and Höfn. Jökulsárlón is filled with melted ice from the glacier Breiðamerkurjökull, which is part of Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull. Here you can go for a walk on the Diamond Beach or why not try the boat trip in the glacier lagoon where you can see the icebergs up close? If you are more adventurous you can try one of the glacier tours.

Highlights of the Faroe Islands See the description of the highlights on the next pages In the middle of the North Atlantic only a day and a half by boat from Europe’s mainland, the Faroe Islands are encircled by 1,289 km of coastline. Nowhere is further than 5 km from the sea. We warmly recommend the grandiose land and seascapes of the Faroe Islands. The archipelago is known for its mild winters and cool summers, but regardless of the season, you will be immersed in spectacular panoramas as soon as you sail into its fjords. Nature is of unfathomable significance here, and its influence on local culture can hardly be overestimated. The natural surroundings are firmly embedded in the inhabitants’ character and way of thinking. The population of almost 52,000 is spread across the 17 inhabited islands, which are interlinked by a superb network of roads, tunnels and ferries. The Faroese are a warm, generous, friendly and hospitable people. They are familyoriented, down-to-earth and have great respect for tradition. A salient characteristic of the Faroese is how open they are to tourists. The Faroese are proud of their country and culture and they are eager to show visitors the finest the Faroe Islands have to offer. Our Sailing Schedule Smyril Line has a regular year-round sailing schedule to the Faroe Islands with weekly departures from Hirtshals in Denmark to Tórshavn in the Faroe Islands. During the period from 05.06 to 20.08.2021, we have departures twice a week Tuesdays and Saturdays.

ideas to experiencing the Faroe Islands Tórshavn

With only around 20,000 inhabitants, Tórshavn is not just one of the world’s smallest capitals, but also one of the most charming ones with an exciting mix of old and new. Explore the city on foot and see old protected buildings side-by-side with modern architectural design. We especially recommend a stroll around the little Tinganes promontory, which is the seat of government, and to the adjacent traditional neighbourhood Reyn with its quaint idyll. The National Gallery of the Faroe Islands as well as the Nordic House also merit a visit. In addition, the Faroe Islands offer exciting shopping opportunities. Local design wares can be found for example at Østrøm and Guðrun & Guðrun. You can also savour Nordic cuisine at several of the little capital’s exciting and enticing restaurants.

1

Tip: Look out for Summartónar, Faroe Islands Festival of Classical and Contemporary Music. The festival arranges a wealth of concerts around the country and several are free!

Nólsoy

2

Kirkjubøur

Nólsoy is the island for anyone who wants to experience both nature and village charm at once. It offers scenic nature walks, for example along the old cairn path across the mountain Eggjarklettur out to the lighthouse on Borðan. The walk takes around four hours. There are several cafés in Nólsoy’s only village, which carries the same name as the island. Live music is regularly on the programme. Please visit excursions.fo for a guided trip to Nólsoy.

Vestmanna Seacliff

The Vestmanna Cliffs and Sea Stacks are one of the major tourist attractions in the Faroe Islands. We recommend a boat trip to the Vestmanna Seacliffs where you get the chance to come up close to bird life, majestic grottos and imposing cliffs.

22

4

Book your boat trip on excursions.fo.

The historic village Kirkjubøur is a 10-minute drive from Tórshavn. Kirkjubøur was the bishop’s seat and thus the spiritual and cultural hub of the Faroe Islands. St. Olav’s Church (11th century), Magnus Cathedral (12th century) and the Kirkjubøargarður farm, which is now home to the 17th generation of the Patursson family, are all monuments that bear witness to a long history. Why not take a gentle hike from Tórshavn to Kirkjubøur along the old path? The trip is 7-km-long and relatively easy. The views are superb.

3

5

Saksun & Tjørnuvík

Picturesque Saksun is a popular excursion in northwestern Streymoy. At low tide you can walk the 3 km to the Atlantic shore. The old farm Dúvugarðar dates from the 17th century and is open during the summer as a museum and café. A little further north in Streymoyyou will find Tjørnuvík overlooking the bay with its vistas of the famous sea stacks The Giant and The Hag. We recommend a photo stop on the way to or from Tjørnuvík at the stunning waterfall Fossá.

Gjógv

Charming Gjógv is on the north coast of Eysturoy. The village is known for its natural harbour in a ravine formed by the sea. It was the village’s main artery until the road came in 1960. Gjógv is a Faroese word for ravine. The old shop from 1883 serves as both a shop and café in summer. In addition, the Guesthouse Gjáargarður has a restaurant.

6

There are excellent hiking opportunities in the area. Near Gjógv you will find the tallest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur. Hike up the 880-m-tall mountain, put up your feet and enjoy the magnificent panorama.

Mykines

Please note that this excursion is weather dependent.

Trælanípan & Gásadalur

Trælanípa is among the most photographed locations in the Faroe Islands. From the edge of this premonitory you will stare down a 142 m vertical drop into the sea, and at the same time you see lake Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. From this vantage point you can also marvel at the southern tip of Streymoy as well as Hestur, Koltur, Sandoy, Skúvoy and Suðuroy. To the other side you can take in the bird cliffs Sørvágsbjørg, Mykines and Mykineshólmur.

8

We recommend a guided hike to Trælanípan, which you can book on excursions.fo. In the village Gásadalur you will find the most famous waterfall in the Faroe Islands, Múlafossur, which tumbles straight into the Atlantic Ocean. Among the characteristic grass-thatched houses lies Gásadalsgarður, now a guesthouse with a café. Here you can take in the village idyll and savour homemade Faroese specialities.

Sandur

7

Mykines is the westernmost island in the archipelgo. The walk from the village Mykines out to the islet with the lighthouse is a breathtaking experience. Enjoy the grandiose ocean views to the west and the island scenery to the east as you walk across the island. This place is known as ‘bird paradise’ describing its rich, bustling bird life, including hundreds of cute puffins, which build their burrows here in summer. In order to book your ferry place and/or pay for access to walk through the puffin colony out to Mykineshólmur visit mykines.fo.

Klaksvík

Klaksvík is the second largest town in the Faroe Islands. It is nestled in a northfacing bay, which makes a superb harbour. The city is guarded by towering mountains, including Klakkur, which the town is named after. We recommend a hike (1,5 h) to Klakkur. In fair weather you will have magnificent views. City Comfort Bestseller 2020

We recommend

CITY HOLIDAY Tórshavn is a cosy town that mainly consists of small houses in every colour. It has all that it takes to be a tiny little capital there is something truly special about Tórshavn. The town is a charming blend of old and new. In the area around the harbour lies Tinganes, where the government is located. The ‘old town’ of Tórshavn is also here.

26

The cute and small houses have been restored over the last years and the area has turned in to a cosy place where people want to live. Skansin is located over the harbour. This is an old fortress built in 1580. It was built in order to defend Tórshavn from pirates. Stay at the new 4*Hotel Brandan.

NORTH ATLANTIC CRUISE BUFFET Friday evening, when the North Atlantic Cruise is nearing its end, we celebrate our adventures with a buffet offering original dishes from the Viking Age (800 - 1150). The Vikings were more than fearsome warriors, they were also culinary explorers, who discovered and disseminated new raw materials, food preparation techniques and storage methods. After an exhaustive search for authentic recipes and ingredients, such as fish, meat, poultry and spices from the Viking times, we have put an enticing buffet together with a plethora of original dishes from the Viking Age.

HAPPY HOUR

Every evening there is Happy Hour in Naust. Two beer or two cocktails for the price of one. The times for the Happy Hour are announced on board.

BEER TASTING

Book a beer tasting and enjoy four different Faroese beers, accompanied by cheese and sausage specialties. Every Friday and Sunday in Naust on deck 5. Bookable at the reception before 16.30. Price per person â‚Ź 14.

Nes, the Faroe Islands

Cruise excursions are included

BUS TRIP TO HISTORICAL KIRKJUBØUR Monday – Duration approx. 4 hours Kirkjubøur is the historical heart of the Faroes. The little village is located on the southwest coast of Streymoy and offers a stunning view of the islands Hestur and Koltur. In the Middle Ages it was the Faroese Episcopal See, which made it the country’s spiritual and cultural hub. On this excursion we will drive through Tórshavn, quite possibly the world’s smallest capital, and then up across beautiful mountains, past the village Velbastað clinging to the steep slopes. The bus trip will be both scenic and informative, as it is guided in English, Danish and German. The local farmer will be ready to greet us in Kirkjubø and guide us on a visit to the enigmatic Magnus Cathedral, built around the year 1300 by Bishop Erlendur, and then to St. Olaf’s Church and the Kirkjubøargarður estate farmhouse (Roykstovan), a stave house dating back to the turn of the first millennium, it is said to be the world’s oldest inhabited wooden house. To round off the visit, our host will invite us for hot drinks and pastries in the atmospheric Roykstovan. Included in this bus tour is also a guided walk in the old part of Tórshavn.

38

UNIQUE BUS TRIP TO LAKE MÝVATN & DETTIFOSS Tuesday– Duration approx. 10 hours On this day trip we drive from Seyðisfjörður up to the beautiful 620 m high mountain pass, Fjarðarheiði, and further down to the town of Egilsstaðir. The trip continues through the breathtaking valley, Jökuldalurin, and we will make a short photo stop at the dark desert landscape, Dimmufjallgarður. During the trip we pass Horseborg, where several movie scenes for major Hollywood productions have been filmed. We will make a stop at Námafjall, where we will see roaring pseudocrats and steamy sulphates. We are going to see the bubbly mud puddles and walk on the geothermal mud. We will make a stop at the Mývatn Nature Bath, where we will have a light lunch. A must on this trip is to bathe in the hot water from geothermal sources (entrance fee not included). Afterwards we will visit Dimmuborgir, which is an interesting lava landscape. On our return trip we drive to Dettifoss, which is a waterfall in northern Iceland. The waterfall is 44 m high and 100 m wide and has an average water flow rate of 193 cubic meters per second, making Dettifoss Europe’s most powerful waterfall. This is without a doubt the highlight of the trip. Dettifoss is particularly weather dependent.

The photographs in the exhibition Auroras, gives you a chance to see it. Next we continue to Egilsstaðir and further along the southeastern bank of Lake Lögurinn, where we pass the beautiful Hallormsstaðarskógur, which is the largest forest in Iceland. Thursday – Duration approx. 4 hours We drive from Tórshavn to the village of Nes on Eysturoy through the subsea tunnel connecting Streymoy and Eysturoy. In Nes we will learn what running a modern-day sheep farm entails, right among Torkilsheyggur farm’s woolly flock. To round of our visit, the farmers will treat us to homemade rhubarb cordial and samples of the unique Faroese cured sheep delicacies skerpikjøt and ræst kjøt. Our next stop will be Navia’s flagship store. As one of the Faroe Islands’ leading yarn and sweater brands, Navia is widely known on the international market. WINTER SAILING TO ICELAND

Package Tours to the Faroe Islands and Iceland

If MS Norröna departs earlier or later than planned or if a departure is cancelled, SML is not obliged to pay any compensation, pay for any alternative means of transport or offer any free accommodation whatsoever. Passengers are liable for these expenses. SML can, however, offer passengers who are stranded in the Faroes free accommodation on board MS Norröna, although reasonable payment for any meals will be required. If passengers are stranded in Iceland, SML is not liable for any expenses they may incur owing to this, including, but not limited to, hotel expenses. However, SML would be very happy to help customers find accommodation, should this be required.

Changes in travel packages will entail an additional fee of € 25 per night per room in addition to any resulting changes in the price. SML reserves the right to increase prices post-reservation due to changes in transportation-costs, including fuel costs, taxes, fees, costs of certain services, exchange rates etc.

TERMS OF CANCELLATION

SML always plans for safe crossings and, should conditions prove adverse, we may have to change the sailing schedule accordingly. Should weather conditions and/or technical problems prevent safe sailing between the Faroe Islands and Iceland or between Iceland and the Faroe Islands, SML reserves the right to change the sailing schedule, so that we depart earlier or later than planned. SML also reserves the right to cancel a departure.

In accordance with the legislation governing travel packages, customers bear no responsibility for cancellation of reservations due to natural catastrophes or similar conditions if, for example, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or the Ministry of Health advises against travelling to the destination. These terms do not apply in the event that the catastrophe or similar condition was common knowledge when the reservations were made. Unused travel packages and voyages or parts thereof are not refunded.

As an example, if a week passes without Norröna reaching Seyðisfjørður in Iceland, and a passenger on board Norröna wishes to get to Iceland sooner, SML will not pay for a flight; passengers are solely responsible for any such alternative travel arrangements. However, if a passenger is travelling with a car and wishes to have it shipped to Iceland, SML will ensure, together with the passenger, that the vehicle is shipped to Seyðisfjørður in Iceland for free on the next trip.

Transportation only (out-and inbound): » Cancellations made up to 31 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 10% of the price of the journey, however no less than € 40 per person. » Cancellations made between 30 and 15 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 50% of the price of the journey, however no less than € 40 per person. » Cancellations made between 14 and 7 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 75% of the price of the journey. » Cancellations made less than 7 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 100% of the price of the journey.

Passengers are required to stay updated on departure times and possible changes on our website smyrilline.com or call +298 345800. SML will always do their outmost to inform passengers about any changes in the sailing schedule, therefore it is very important that passengers provide SML with a telephone number, which is reachable at all times.

Package tours: » Cancellations made up to 31 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 10% of the package price, however no less than € 90 per person and € 20 per night per room. » Cancellations made between 30 and 15 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 50% of the package price plus an administrative fee of € 50 per person. » Cancellations made between 14 and 8 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 75% of the package price plus an administrative fee of € 50 per person. » Cancellations made less than 8 days prior to departure result in forfeiture of 100% of the package price. Cancellation fees may rise in case hotels demand higher fees for cancellations. Special terms of cancellation are applicable for groups.

CHANGES/CANCELLATION BY SML BEFORE DEPARTURE

Passengers are entitled to updates on arrivals and departures. Information about departure/arrival is available on phone +298 345800 or on smyrilline.com. If the package tour is cancelled by SML before departure or cannot be accomplished as agreed, the customer must be notified as soon as possible. However, this does not apply to minor changes/ trivialities. At the same time as changes/cancellations are announced, SML must inform the customer about the possibility to complain. The customer may terminate the agreement and have any amount refunded that has been paid according to the agreement, or take part in another package tour of his/her own choice, if SML can offer this without disproportionate costs or losses. Within adequate time after receipt of the notify caution of change, the customer must notify SML. If the customer chooses to participate in a package tour of a higher value than the one originally booked, the customer must pay the price difference. If the package tour has a lower value than the one originally booked, SML must refund the price difference. Responsibility and exemption from responsibility for SML in case of changes etc.: If the customer suffers a loss due to SML’s changes or as a consequence of cancellation of the package tour, the customer has a claim for a refund in correspondence with general refund regulations, unless the cancellation/deficiency is caused by the fact that the number of travelers mentioned in the agreement has not been registered – that a certain percentage of travelers has been not achieved and that SML has notified the customer of this no later than 14 days before departure (for shorter excursions/bus journeys a shorter time of notice may apply) or that the loss is caused by a third party or external circumstances of no relevance to the package tour, and that SML or anyone, for whom SML is responsible, could not have foreseen these circumstances by applying adequate care when entering the agreement or could have avoided or averted them i.e. force majeure or circumstances similar to force majeure. SML does not enter into the statutory, objectively based responsibility that may lie with carriers, hotels and other collaborators. SML does not assume any responsibility for irrelevant third party damages on persons or for lost, stolen or destroyed luggage/vehicles etc. For the boat journey SML’s travelling regulations apply. Reference is made to the timetable. Complaints and limitation of liability: If the customer finds any deficiencies during the journey or in relation to the destination, he/she must notify SML or the service provider in question to make it possible for them to remedy the deficiency. A deficiency occurs, if the traveler does not receive the services and performances that through catalogues, advertisements or special agreements with SML have been stated on the participant receipt, or the performances are of a poorer quality than what was agreed or guaranteed. If SML shall remedy the deficiency, the customer cannot claim a proportional reduction or terminate the agreement. If remedying may cause SML disproportionate costs or considerable disadvantages, the customer may be referred to claim a proportional price reduction or to cancel. Refund claims must be proposed to SML or the intermediary within reasonable time after the journey has ended. At the same time SML limit their responsibility for deficiencies and damages to the same extent as the following international conventions that may apply for the service providers, who are to blame for the deficient part of the package tour: For air carriage: The Warsaw Convention; For sea carriage: The Athens Convention; For train carriage: The convention for international rail road transports. Travelers’ accident insurance: As very low refunds are often paid according to the international conventions, and as the traveler must pay any costs concerning medical care and ambulance transportation, we recommend that travelers take out a travelers’ accident insurance. Ask our travel consultants for details.

If a excursion is cancelled, SML will refund the prepaid amount on board. Refund will be in DKK.
