D EAR F RIENDS, I am very excited to announce the 2016-2017 Candlelight Concert Series. I consider it a great privilege to be involved in this renowned program, established in 1978. For years, this has been supporting the vitality of music at St. Mary the Virgin and the Cow Hollow community. This year’s slate of musicians is of superlative quality and interest, and I sincerely hope that you will make Candlelight Concerts a priority this year. All of these groups consist of phenomenal musicians and perform captivating concerts. Thanks to the generosity of many donors, we are very pleased to be able to offer these concerts without charge, only asking for a free-will offering. With your generous support, we are glad to provide four concerts this year, including a male a cappella chorus, specializing in Barbershop music; a dynamic trio of flutes who perform almost exclusively works by living composers; a classical guitar duo with repertoire from Scarlatti to Cole Porter; and one of the hottest new string quartets in San Francisco All gifts, large and small, are very gladly received, and are essential to providing this ministry to our community on an ongoing basis. Please consider giving what you can. All donations are tax-deductible. Checks may be paid to Friends of Music or can be made online at www.smvsf.org, specifying “Friends of Music.” I am very grateful to have your support. Thank you.

Eric Choate Interim Director of Music The Episcopal Church of St. Mary the Virgin

2015 - 2016

Friday, November 4, 2015 • 8 pm The Fog City Singers were founded in October 2015 by six members of the Bay Area choral and barbershop communities. They had a simple question: what would happen if barbershop music were infused with influences from San Francisco’s rich musical tapestry? Specifically, what might Barbershop have to gain from the diverse music singing all around the city? Likewise, what might others learn from the techniques and traditions that barbershoppers cultivate in that unique American art form? To explore these ideas, our founders invited 25 of the best singers they knew to memorize four songs at home, attend three rehearsals, then perform a friends-and-family concert immediately following the third meeting. In the end, we were pleased to discover that this was a winning strategy. The music gelled instantly, and the sound we produced was one that none of us had expected. For some of us, we were moved to unabashed tears of excitement. Saturday, January 28, 2017 • 6 pm Areon Flutes, a professional chamber music ensemble now in their 12th season, provides audiences a fresh outlook on traditional chamber music. Noted for innovative programming and collaborations, Areon’s performances creatively engage audiences with unique staging, theatrics, choreography, and using all members of the flute family. Part of Areon’s mission is to make flute chamber music an equal voice in the chamber music world by leaving a new, diversified chamber music legacy. Areon Flutes are the 2008 Bronze Medalists at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and performed their debut concert at Carnegie Hall in 2007. Areon is proud to be Miyazawa Artists, and their three albums can be heard on iTunes. More:www.areonflutes.com. ALL PERFORMANCES ARE HELD AT:

Saturday, April 1, 2017 • 6 pm Combining excellent arrangement, adventurous repertoire, and the bonus of an accomplished soprano, One Great City Duo brings a truly imaginative approach to their programming. The San Francisco Examiner acclaims One Great City Duo as an "innovative new duo... One Great City brings a journey of discovery to every recital they prepare." One Great City Duo crystalized in 2011, and immediately began building a repertoire unique to them, combining Alexandra's abilities both as a guitarist and a soprano with their love and dedication to chamber music. One Great City Duo recently recorded their debut album, titled “Excursions." The album features Sherren’s transcriptions of Ned Rorem, Samuel Barber, Cole Porter, and Pat Metheny, as well as original guitar duo music by Celso Machado. One Great City Duo has appeared on the Peninsula Guitar Series, the 2015 Hot Air Music Festival, and on the radio, for KALW 91.7 FM’s Revolutions Per Minute, hosted by Sarah Cahill. In March 2015, One Great City Duo premiered the works of two outstanding young composers, Eric Choate and Shahab Paranj, at the Center for New Musicia. Saturday, May 27, 2017 • 6 pm “Thalea never failed to deliver a stirring performance.” - Calgary Herald Formed in 2014 at the Zephyr International Chamber Music Festival in Courmayeur, Italy, the Thalea String Quartet has been praised for their “vibrant performance” and “sincere expressivity” (SF Classical Voice). The quartet has performed recitals in Italy, the United States and Canada and was recently appointed as the first quartet-in-residence at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. They were named one of the “Top 10 Bay Area Quartets You Should Know” by CultureTrip.com and were the recipients of the 2016 Barbara Fritz Chamber Music Award from the Berkeley Piano Club. They made their debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in early 2016.
