A time for celebration Our Greening is well under way! We have partnered with the Garden Of Eating and the Vineland Agricultural Research Station to go on weekly picks with anyone who wants to volunteer. Of course this is open to our neighbors -- all that we can accommodate are welcome. We leave between 9:00-9:30 a.m. on Thursday mornings and generally pick for one hour, then return back to Start Me Up Niagara. Folks take home with them some of the harvest and leave the rest to be distributed at the centre or used as an enhancement to our meal program. So far we have picked peaches, pears and apples. To support some of the fresh food we have been able to harvest, we have begun construction on a fruit/vegetable cold storage in the basement of Start Me Up Niagara. This will help store some of what we pick and donations of perishable to the centre throughout the fall and winter. Climate Action Now manages the Oakdale Community Garden and has

been holding its canning workshops at our centre. For future events they can be reached at info@can.ca. We will be having a garden plot at the Community Garden on Oakdale Avenue in 2010. All volunteers are welcome. SMUN is in the process of purchasing yard maintenance equipment to continue with the beautification and year round maintenance of our property. Any neighbors that need snow removal or yard maintenance can contact Start Me Up Nigara about possible partnerships. Thanks to Liz, our neighbor, for her wonderful work in our front garden. And also special thanks to Theresa, Richard, Donna and John for their contributions to our greening initiative. And a special thanks to a kind neighbour who dropped by with freshly baked peach crumble. Our next pick - Oct. 8. 15, 22, 2009. We meet at Start Me Up Niagara. You can also help us car pool. Please call Dave Roulston 905.984.5310x13.
