Introduction Hi there! This compendium of out-of-the-ordinary career options was compiled to help you open up to all of the incredible possibilities out there. Some of the featured careers may not be for you (taxidermy anyone?), others may be the perfect fit for your skill set, interests, talents and curiosities. Regardless of what you think of each of the careers featured in this book, as a whole they represent opportunity in many brilliant forms. In my travels I’ve met, worked with and heard about a number of people working in outrageous fields. From science to hospitality, the arts and government, there are many people who have carved out extraordinary roles for themselves. Some have invested in decades of education to get where they are, while others have made up their own job titles and thrived without spending a minute on studying. When you’re trying to choose a suitable career it can sometimes feel like the pathways are set, the roadblocks are in place and the dice are loaded against you. This book aims to blow the cobwebs out of the neural pathways that have led you to believe you can’t dedicate your life to working the way you want. When we think about future career possibilities, many of us get stuck on the reasons why a certain career won’t work out for us. Of course, that hard old chestnut of practicality has its place in our lives (begrudgingly so), but immediately writing off a career as for someone else – someone smarter, or luckier, or more privileged – is both self-defeating and a little bit tragic when you consider how much of our lives we spend at work.

Obviously, life is a fickle thing and many career successes can be attributed to an unpredictable cluster of uncontrollable factors. Luck, timing, personal background, privilege and location can all play a part in where your career takes you. But other factors that you can control – such as working hard, being committed to a path and investing in education – can also have an impact on your career path and your ability to earn money. Not all of us can get what we want in life, this is true. However, this book encourages you to take a moment to see all the possibilities in the world. Because there’s more than enough people ready to tell you what you can’t do, who you can’t be, and what’s not suitable for you. This book is a big middle finger to all the negative Nellies, naysayers and dream-crushers who never took a chance or were never given the opportunity to follow the career they wanted, so think it’s cool to discourage others. This book will give you a sweet taste of all the bizarre, strange, cool, funny, weird, outlandish, interesting, unbelievable things that people get paid to do. I sincerely hope that, like me, you end up getting paid to do awesome things sometime soon (but if you want to be an accountant that’s cool too).
