here is no better way to experience Smith Mountain Lake than by getting out on it! The lake’s open bodies and sprawling channels offer an irresistible invitation to play, sightsee and relax in a breathtaking setting. Visitors will appreciate how easy it is to get on the water at Smith Mountain Lake, where local marinas offer everything needed to guarantee your family – from the youngest to the oldest – has a blast! Friendly marina employees can provide great ideas to make the most of a day on the lake. You may want to take the kids out for the time of their lives bouncing on an inflatable. Or perhaps a sunset cruise to dinner at a waterfront restaurant is more your speed. Anglers will surely want to gather up fishing gear and cast to their heart’s content. And the family athlete will love to crank up the adrenaline with a heart-pounding wakeboard or ski session. No matter how you choose to spend your time on the water, we can assure you’ll leave wanting to return … or stay forever.
Watercraft Tips for Boat Captains Jim shauberger
Boating at SML is always an adventure. Lake marinas and boat rental companies offer a wide variety of recreational vessels, including spacious and leisurely pontoons, speedboats, sporting craft and fishing schooners. If you’re planning a summer trip, be sure to secure your rental well ahead of time. Those who will be driving the boat will want to check the latest Virginia watercraft operation laws as they have changed recently. See Page 36.
Personal watercraft are known to provide an exciting ride and quick access from one on-water destination to another. PWCs (also known as jet skis, SeaDoos and wave runners) are built to accommodate one, two or three riders, and some are powerful enough to tow skiers or wakeboarders. Virginia has laws specifically for PWC drivers and riders, so be sure you are familiar with the latest requirements. See Page 37.
• Observe lake markers and no-wake zone markers • Display lights sunset to sunrise • No wake allowed near swimmers, docks and other boats • Drive to the right of center, passing oncoming boats should be port (left side) to port • Maintain a safe speed • Make eye contact or wave to other skippers to acknowledge awareness of each other’s presence and direction of travel. • Travel at lower-thannormal speeds in heavy traffic, at night and other times of low visibility.

• Avoid creating large displacement wakes while close to shore or running in small coves.
houseboat may be one of the most distinctive and memorable ways to spend time at Smith Mountain Lake. With this type of rental accommodation, your family will gain the full benefits of lake recreation and have even more time to explore the lake’s landscape while journeying from landmark to landmark. Houseboats come with standard lodging amenities such as kitchen, bathroom with shower, heating and air, fresh water and room to sleep 6-10. In addition, houseboats are designed for outdoor recreation, equipped with water slides, grills and outdoor furniture and prepped to carry all the swimming, fishing and water activity gear you may need. Because houseboats are a popular option at Smith Mountain Lake, you will want to secure your rental early and ensure the amenities you want are available. If a houseboat vacation at Smith Mountain Lake suits you, contact the area’s rental company well in advance.

Inflatable riding toys are popular on Smith Mountain Lake, and a guaranteed way to produce lots of giggles and memories. Children especially love bouncy rides on towables, which come in all shapes, colors and sizes. Local marinas and sporting goods retailers stock up for the summer, allowing visitors to purchase or rent their favorites. When towing adults or children, be sure to adhere to basic safety principles. Always wear a lifejacket, regardless of age. Only use inflatables during daylight hours, and always use an observer who can alert the boat driver if he or she needs to slow down or stop. frances pratt

urking in the underwater world of Smith Mountain Lake is one of its biggest draws. Within our dynamic, 20,600-acre reservoir is an abundance of popular game fish, including black bass, catfish, white perch, crappie, sunfish and carp. But the prized catch – striped bass – is what attracts fishermen of all skill levels to SML year-round. “There aren’t many places in the country that can support good striped bass,” says Dan Wilson, fisheries biologist with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. “Smith Mountain Lake is the premier striped bass fishery in the state and one of the premier striper fisheries on the East Coast.” So whether you’re a casual weekend angler or aspire to the professional tour, Smith Mountain Lake’s easy access, variety of fish species and distinctive underwater habitat make it an ideal fishing destination.

Boating Safety Education In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly enacted a law to establish a boating safety education compliance requirement. Following are the upcoming deadlines: • Motorboat operators 40 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2013; • Motorboat operators 45 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2014; • Motorboat operators 50 years of age or younger shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2015; • All motorboat operators, regardless of age, shall meet the requirements by July 1, 2016. The Boat Virginia course is free and offered in localities around the state. Booker T. Washington National Monument
Appalachian Power, a division of American Electric Power, began construction of Smith Mountain Dam in 1960 in the gap of Smith Mountain in Pittsylvania and Bedford counties. The facility began producing electricity in February 1966 and the lake reached its “full pond” water level of 795 feet above sea level the following month. At the Joseph H. Vipperman Visitor’s Center, you can learn more about the dam, development of the lake and the engineering of a modern hydroelectric dam.
Best known for establishing Tuskegee Institute in Alabama, famous AfricanAmerican educator and statesman Booker T. Washington grew up as a slave on the 207-acre tobacco farm of James and Elizabeth Burroughs near Westlake Corner. Today, the site is part of the National Park Service and is free to visit. The monument has indoor and outdoor exhibits complete with a documentary video of Washington’s life, replica buildings and period farm with livestock. Special events are scheduled year-round.

he Smith Mountain Lake region has experienced an exciting boon in healthcare services over the past decade. Properly fitted commercial developments and willing healthcare providers have come together to create convenient and comprehensive coverage for the lake’s growing population of residents, as well as visitors. Three primary healthcare networks serve the region: Centra, Carilion Clinic and LewisGale Regional Health System. All are thriving companies that excel at providing quality care.
COURTESY OF LEWiSGALE
Many SML residents rely on LewisGale for their healthcare needs. At the company’s Westlake facility, a team of physicians provides specialty care in cardiology, rheumatology, pulmonary and critical care, vascular surgery and sleep medicine. At LewisGale Medical Center in nearby Salem patients have access to comprehensive care and advanced technology in a number of specialties.
DR. CHAD HOYT | COURTESY OF CENTRA
Centra is a Lynchburg-based network providing services primarily on the Bedford side of Smith Mountain Lake. Centra has partnerships with numerous physicians, including family practitioners, cardiologists and urologists, and is building a $23-million, 50,000-square-foot facility in nearby Gretna that will offer 24/7 emergency care and advanced imaging.

Carilion Clinic, based in Roanoke, has had a strong presence in the SML region for more than a decade. A hospital in Rocky Mount and numerous primary-care physicians have long been established at or within a few minutes’ drive to SML. in 2009, Carilion added a state-of-theart imaging facility with urgent care, sleep lab and helipad at Westlake. Company officials say they have long-term plans to continue to meet the growing healthcare needs of SML residents and visitors.
