Van Dyke Home

#2 ON MAP AND HOME TOUR BROCHURE GPS: 37:06.309 N; 79:36.051 W

Although the home of Paul and Nancy Stanley Van Dyke looks new, the 26-year-old home was recently remodeled. The homeowners desired a high-ceiling garage, which they got, along with a new wing with master suite and guest quarters, new kitchen, hickory flooring, new siding and other improvements. Everything looks open, bright and welcoming. Interesting artifacts include a South African zebra rug, masks and huge stuffed kudu (a type of antelope) above the fireplace. A media room cleverly converts to guest bedroom, and a large gaming area opens to a patio with outdoor kitchen and firepit. An antique fountain greets guests on the street side. Those arriving by boat have an easy walk to the house. 80 September • October 2014 | SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKER

BY BOAT: Exit the Brownell/Shaw cove, staying toward left and passing the no-wake markers at Virginia Dare Marina. Head straight into the main section of Walton Creek, staying left when that section forks. The VanDyke’s gray-and-white dock will be on right almost at the end of the cove. Approximate run time: 5-7 minutes
