January/February 2012

My husband and I

were married nearly 17 years ago on a picture-perfect summer day at Smith Mountain Lake. Like many brides and grooms, Chris and I chose SML for its natural beauty and proximity to family and friends. For many of our out-oftown guests, the weekend doubled as a mini vacation with time spent boating, fishing and relaxing on the dock. In recent years, the concept of a destination wedding has grown tremendously and SML has become a hotspot for couples looking to take advantage of all the lake area has to offer. In our 2012 Wedding Guide, which starts on Page 46, we profile several out-of-town couples (including one bride and groom living on opposite coasts) who chose to tie the knot at Smith Mountain Lake. The guide also includes a handy list of area businesses to help couples find everything they need for the big day. Speaking of big, this issue also features the winners of our 2012 Best of SML Awards (Page 39). Readers voted in record numbers for the 11th annual awards, which highlight the best of business, food and drink and lifestyle happenings at the lake. Thank you to all who voted and congratulations to the winners. Other can’t-miss features in this issue include a profile on Laker Bruce Stritesky who spends many Sundays not on the water, but on the football field as an NFL official; Spirits columnist Gordon Kendall’s ideas for libations to warm you from the inside out; and our annual Lodging Guide to help you plan your next trip to SML. The Laker staff is busy planning for the March/April magazine, our annual Home & Garden issue. If you have story ideas or are interested in advertising, please contact us prior to Jan. 27.
