My goal as I begin my career is to find a place where I can explore how architecture as a practice can have a significant positive impact on our world as we collectively struggle against the pressing issue of climate change. I am passionate about this issue and I am eager to embark on a journey towards a more holistically conceived world.

I have a healthy respect for the daunting task that I have set for myself, and it will require no small amount of humility and education, as well as the insights and wisdom of a great number of colleagues, mentors, and land experts. I have a lot to learn, but I remain determined to make my mark as a young architect.

LOFTED FOREST

Studio Project: M.Arch. Year 2 | Independent

Duration: 3 months

The lofted forest is a living exhibition of various urban forestry methodologies, including those of days gone by as well as current practices and new innovations.

A number of landscaping and site organization strategies create a rich urban fabric. Visitors experience a unique site condition depending on weather conditions but are anchored to the design‘s identity as an urban forestry knowledge centre through thoughtfully placed tree saplings.

The main circulation occurs through the staggered greenhouses by way of gently sloping ramps which carry visitors across the rising landscape.

Clustered columns serve quadruple-duty for the greenhouses by supporting the floorplates and glazing, housing mechanical services, daylighting basement spaces, and acting as a vertical circulation shaft for incoming and outgoing saplings.

WAVELENGTH

School Project: M.Arch. Year 1 | Collaborative (+ Keagan Fowler)

Duration: 6 weeks

At-risk and disinfranchised youth are often left to the streets, despite meagre housing solutions offered by municipal governments. Operation Come Home, the company for whom this project was designed, has a strong history of compassion for the runaway youth population. Wavelength presents a housing solution that focuses on community building both inside and outside its walls.

From their initial entry through the intimate lobby and the following atrium garden, inhabitants of Wavelength are met with a balanced atmosphere of security and privacy. The democratically arranged upper storey living quarters instill a sense of equity as well as community. Each dormitory unit is provided a balcony space that overlooks the public courtyard below, and the building is stepped back such that each balcony is opened to the sky above.

The project is anchored by its dining hall space, which is located in the brise-soleil parking structure, just above the highest level of the living quarters. The dining hall‘s western face permits light from the setting sun to enter and dance off of the shallow pool within, casting a dynamic lighting feature throughout the space in the evening.

NEXUS 10

Duration: 2 months

As the capital of a nation that is globally seen as a place of refuge, opportunity, and culture, Ottawa is uniquely positioned to make an impactful statement on behalf of Canada. The ByWard Market is ripe for revitalization and offers a wonderful opportunity to create a unique and cherished space for gathering and celebration, sharing and learning, shopping and trade, and culture and history.

“The public spaces are the backdrop against which daily life, festivals, and celebrations unfold; a place for both the everyday and the extraordinary.”

Yet, why stop there? Nexus 10 goes beyond these interventions by opening its doors to all and sundry — all cultures, religions, and interest groups. The intent of this project is to create a public space with open access to all forms of learning, sharing, and experience of which the people of Ottawa can speak fondly and to which the people of Canada and abroad look as a destination.

As the most traditional of the ten learning spaces, the library is the conceptual and programmatic anchor for Nexus 10.

Knowledge through movement. The skatepark provides the ByWard Market community with a dynamic way to engage with one another.

As an extension of the theatre space below and the adjacent workshop learning spaces, the publically accessible rooftop patio overlooks the east side of the ByWard Market.

In an urban context known for its cold winters and quiet environment, the Shard defiantly presents the city of Ottawa with a shining oasis that encourages play, community, and life. Leveraging the weight of its glass centrepiece, the Shard provides its residents and their proximal community with a vibrant gathering space.

Placemaking and holistic design principles inform the primary programmatic decisions. The glass centrepeice is not only a space for gathering, but also a community garden, central circulation corridor, and atrium for interaction, dining, and religion.

Duration: 1 month

If a form were to accommodate the sound of its environment, then said form might have to be flexible in its shape. To utilize this idea as a basis for this investigation, the concept of advection was explored.

Three proto-architectural artefacts were created to synergistically represent a design which might be cognizant of its environment.

In the context of this investigation, noise advection is defined as the fluid movement of form along the gradient of frequency and amplitude of a real-time audio source. This effect was achieved using geonodes in Blender, where a cube was split into hundreds of unique nodes that extended and retracted in response to the various frequencies of an audio source.

Despite being a seasoned powerlifter and lifelong health & fitness enthusiast, my understanding of human anatomy and how the body works is lacking.

In a pursuit to become more familiar with such mechanisms, I began studying human skeletal and muscular systems. The following anatomical study showcases my understanding of such systems.

While this study has been an on-going process for a few years now, it has recently been useful in connecting my knowledge of structural systems, namely statics concepts of moment and shear, to my designs as an architecture student. The function of muscles in resisting force is similar to structural systems in this way. Thinking about design through these lenses has helped me ground my efforts.

HONEYCOMB

Competition: Home After Crisis | Collaboration (+ Keagan Fowler)

Duration: 2 months

Amidst the turmoil that has beset the people of Nigeria in light of recent violence and disruption, Honeycomb offers a tightknit and comfortable housing solution that creates an equitable and collaborative environment for its inhabitants.

Leveraging the space efficient properties of the hexagon as the design’s foundation, the design maximizes the value of each unit of land at multiple scales. Additionally, inhabitants are empowered to be both makers and users of this project through the incorporation of a locallysourced clay brick mill that provides the homes’ modular brick wall panels, which are light and small enough for able-bodied persons to install with ease.

As one of the largest factors in human-produced GHG‘s, the demolition of buildings for the sake of replacing them with newer works is problematic.
