General Manager’s Report On a sad note I wish to inform Members this will be my last report as General Manager of the Club. I am retiring on 27 December 2013, after 26 years Service. I wish to congratulate Shane Atkins on his appointment as General Manager. I am leaving the Club in very capable hands. I wish to thank past and current Boards of Directors, Management and Staff for their support over the years. There has been many changes to the Club during my time from Skid Row to Skylight Lounge and now to the current format. I am sure the Club will continue to grow and prosper with the current Board and Management Team. Your Board of Directors have again agreed to provide a free meal for seniors and Aged Pensioners over 4 days, from Monday 2 December to Thursday 5 December, plus tea and coffee, for both lunch and dinner. The free meal will be what is promoted on the day. Don’t forget our Christmas Toy Raffle on 8 December. Tickets go on sale at 2pm, and the draw commences at 3pm. This will be followed by a Christmas Ham Raffle, commencing at 5:30pm. Tickets go on sale at 4:30pm Just a reminder, the Club is open Christmas Day from 9am. We have a Christmas Buffet commencing at 12noon. The cost is $40 Adults and $20 Children. Bookings are essential. On New Year’s Eve, we have free entertainment in Frocks mixed lounge with “Deno and Gonzo”, appearing from 8pm to late. Come and enjoy the festivities. I would like to wish our Members a very Happy Christmas and a healthy, prosperous New Year. Although I am retiring, I look forward to seeing you around the Club. Please consider our neighbours when leaving the Club late at night. Please keep noise to a minimum. Gordon W Stevens, GENERAL MANAGER

President’s Report I can’t believe another year has passed us. I would like to thank the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of Smithfield RSL, for their continued support throughout my first year as President. The Club is trading well and the extensions are on track – Exciting times ahead. Recently I have attended numerous functions such as the Italian Festival at Fairfield Showground and the Over 80’s Luncheon. I also attended the Club’s Remembrance Day Service which was very inspirational and emotional. After 25 years of service Gordon Stevens our General Manager has decided to retire in late December. Gordon, on behalf of the Board of Directors and myself, thank you for being a mentor and friend to us all and we wish you a wonderful and well deserved retirement. You will be sadly missed. Congratulations to Mr Shane Atkins on being appointed by the Board of Directors as the new General Manager of Smithfield RSL Club. After 28 years service, Shane has demonstrated that he can successfully take our club well into the future. To all my fellow Directors, Management, Staff and Members, I wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and prosperous 2014. See you around the Club Colin Evans, PRESIDENT

The art of poker lies in playing the game by living on your wits, giving away no clue about the hand you hold. How good is your poker face? Currently in Chefs Kitchen, Poker Face by Westend is the featured wine. This range features a rich, sweet melon and citrus fruit Chardonnay, a refreshing, crisp and well balanced Semillion Sauvignon Blanc, a Cabernet Merlot featuring fresh berry flavors and a vibrant Shiraz.

“The Poker Face range is a result of the art of winemaking, of skill mixed with the luck of a good vintage...” Westend Estate Wines is a dynamic family-owned company that was established by Francesco and Elizabeth Calabria in the bourgeoning NSW Riverina in 1945.

Today Francesco and Elizabeth’s son, Bill Calabria, his wife Lena and their four children are committed to producing outstanding value-for-money wines - wines that have won them an array of international awards.

Inter-Club Reports SUB BRANCH – PRESIDENT’S REPORT Another busy year almost finished, much has been achieved and our Sub Branch continues to prosper and grow, we have many reasons to be proud of what our Sub Branch stands for and what we can do. This year we have lost a number of Sub Branch Members, to their families and loved ones I extent our deep and sincere condolences, in their grief. In these sad times let me remind you that the Sub Branch is there to offer advice and a helping hand to help you to cope with the situation. To those Members, who have recently joined us we extend a warm welcome and hope that time at Smithfield will be long and mutually beneficial. I thank all Sub Branch Members who have supported me and the Management Committee, your input is welcomed and appreciated and further strengthens our friendship. Remember, “Unity if Strength”. To all Members and their families and loved ones, I wish you a Merry and Joyous Christmas and a Happy New Year in which all of your hopes and aspirations are realised. On 28 October, I attended the Women’s Auxiliary 50th Anniversary Lunch, held at the Club. The function was well attended and celebrated a very significant milestone in the Auxiliary’s history. As usual, the ladies put on a very enjoyable occasion. Representatives of many visiting Women’s Auxiliaries attended, along with other dignitaries. A good time was had by all, well done Ladies, you excelled yourselves. On 11 November we held our Remembrance Day Ceremony. Owing to the inclement weather the whole of the ceremony was held in the Club’s Orion Room. The Ceremony was well attended and it was pleasing to see so many of the local school children there. In addition to the Remembrance Day Ceremony we also unveiled and dedicated the recently completed Memorial to those 43 Veterans of the Korean War (1950-1953) who died on the Battlefields and who remain unaccounted for in unmarked graves in a foreign land. During this, ceremony we were honoured to have the assistance of Mr Bob Morris, President of the Korean War Veterans Association, and Mr Barry Heckenberg a Veteran of the Korean War, both of whom took a very active part in the event. Many thanks to these Gentlemen for their assistance, particularly to Bob Morris who travelled from Worrigee on the South Coast to be with us. The over 80’s Lunch was also held on 11 November. It was well attended by a happy group of our more senior Sub Branch Members. Once again my best wishes to all for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. LEST WE FORGET Bill Newall, PRESIDENT

The Dartees had a good weekend at Greenwell Point enjoying the water, sun and sights . Although the boys planned to fish, ”Fawlty Towers” has nothing on the laughs; Jack waist deep in the drink while he was supposed to step on board the “tinny”, Mal saving Jack by tying the rope around his neck to stop him from falling and this is all before they left the jetty. The boat grounded and the shear pin on prop busted and the 2 younger fellas had to row. Better luck fishing next time. Thanks Rock for a smooth ride on the Bus and for helping Jack with BBQ and luggage. On behalf of everybody from Smithfield R.S.L. WOMEN’S AUXILIARY REPORT We held our 50th Birthday Luncheon on 28th October and all the hard work and organizing proved to be well worth it as it was a wonderful success. The room looked beautiful with balloons and decoration on each table. Our thanks go to Mim Newall and her helpers and also to the Mr Bill Newall and the Sub Branch for the generosity to our Auxiliary and for providing the specially engraved wine glasses to mark our 50 year anniversary. Our thanks to Dulcie Long for providing photos of yesteryear, and to Sharon Baker for putting them onto a DVD and running her laptop computer for anyone to view. Thanks also must go to Mr Dan Hayes for the generous donation cheque from the Smithfield RSL Club. It was also wonderful to have Jace (who is now a professional singer) who give his time and performance to us as his Grandmother Mrs June Angove was a member of our Auxiliary. President Kath Roberts thanked all members who worked so hard to make the day a memorable occasion. We had quite of lot of other Auxiliaries in attendance and everyone seemed to have a really enjoyable time. Four of our ladies attended the Metropolitan Conference for Women’s Auxiliary at Burwood RSL on 30th October 2013, it was very interesting. It was reported that over $700,000 was raised and donated last year to the RSL approved Charities by the 157 NSW Auxiliaries and 200 new members had joined at various RSL Clubs. We also had a very interesting guest speaker who gave us a demonstration of “The table of Remembrance” which we found quite moving. We had the pleasure once again of being able to sell badges and poppies for Remembrance Day, thanks to ladies who gave their time. Remembrance Day! The weather was wet although no one complained as we did need the rain quite badly. The service was held in the Orion Room because of the weather, and was still quite O.K. but it just does not feel the same as over in the park. Some of our ladies have been attending functions at Chester Hill, Canterbury, Campbelltown, Cardiff and Penrith Auxiliaries, and are now looking forward to the Christmas Party for the Welfare Group at Blacktown RSL on 2nd December, which is the final function for the year. We would like to wish everyone a merry Christmas and good health and happiness for 2014. We are always happy to have new members join us so if you are a lady and would like to be part of our friendly group, please come along at 1.30pm on the 3rd Monday of the month and you will be made very welcome.
