The Flagship Texas Harley-Davidson, Calculated Risk Motorcycle Group Bedford, TX Collaboration: Alliance Architects, Designwork Studios, Bob Moore Construction Harley-Davidson dealerships serve as a powerful branding tool for this iconic brand, providing gathering space for customers who make motorcycle riding a lifestyle, an exciting work environment for a high-energy team with a lot of personality, and an event venue for parties, concerts, and fundraisers. Calculated Risk Motorcycle Group envisoned this dealership building, which replaced the original 1970’s structure across the street, as the “Flagship” for its family of six dealerships, one of the largest dealership groups in the Harley-Davidson network. As the onsite interior designer, owner liason, and bookkeeper for this project, I was involved from planning through operation. Consistent with the vision of a refurbished factory, the design incorporated antique wood floors, vintage brick, and lots of structural steel. From hanging a motorcyle on the wall to installing the world’s largest Harley-Davidson Bar and Shield sign, this project provided logistical and construction challenges. Brand coherence was a primary focus in all aspects of the building, from the communal workspace for the sales team to the extensive use of quotes on the walls. A scenting system carried the signature “Grit” scent throughout the interior, and a large canopy provided ample space for regular outdoor events.

Residential Smith Residence Westlake, TX Collaboration: Blake Architects Using the classic Bacara Resort and Spa in Santa Barbara, California as inspiration, this project brought a taste of the American Riviera to Texas. Tiles made to match the original roof on the Biltmore Hotel, combined with traditional white stucco and classic wrought iron details created an authentic exterior. An extra-thick exterior wall added depth to doorways and windows, mimicing the sturdy walls of the California missions. The 3.5 acre lot provided ample space to let this estate sprawl comfortably, and by removing 300 truckloads of dirt from the site, a drainage swale was converted to a gorgeous pond. Inside, liberal use of handmade talavera tiles, dark wood, and antique furnishings created a cozy, warm environment. Antique rugs provided color, picking up the vivid blue from the tile. White walls let the architecture shine, tastefully accented by oil paintings by a local Texas artist. Productive work and comfortable meetings were possible in the his-and-hers offices, and guests were comfortably housed in a semi-detached private wing. Although the house was large, with an aproximately 14,000 foot foundation, the use of warm materials, charming accents, and cozy spaces made this a comfortable home for daily family life.

Plan My Planner Working with individuals, schools, teams, and small businesses, I create custom day planners for my customers. As an avid paper planner user myself, I understand that having a beautiful, functional planning tool can improve productivity and eliminate a daily frustration. My work in this business has been incredibly rewarding and educational. I’ve become very adept at using Adobe InDesign and advanced Excel spreadsheets to create variable data sets. My graphic design skills are put to the test every day as I focus on finding a balance between appearance and function in each planner. Since I handle all aspects of the business, I’ve also learned how to do basic website coding and application scripting. Finding that I enjoy this type of work has made running the business even more enjoyable. As a small entrepreneur, I had an initial challenge of finding a commercial printer capable of printing the quality I wanted with a oneat-a-time option, which is rare in the industry. Through my doggedness and willingness to reach out, I found a wonderful partner for printing, allowing my business to help support another small business in Texas. The most rewarding aspect of this venture has been learning how to analyze my customers’ needs and systems, and then creating a planner that works well for them on a daily basis. I enjoy the personal contact with my clients, and I feel honored to learn about their lives and businesses as we work together.
