Happy Easter!

From the Director... Well, it's that time of year again when the bunny comes to visit us and we eat far more chocolate than we should, and for others it is a time of reflection as well. I trust you all had a good break and like us, I imagine you have hit the ground running in 2010. I love the smell of fresh paint and being in a new office location, as it feels like a fresh start to a new era. We are now a 2 year old company and although we are still a ‘baby business’, we have learnt to walk and now I believe we are ready to start to run. We are really excited about what opportunities 2010 has to offer and we are starting to see the business really take off with a lot of new builders joining our team and also our new masters starting to gain momentum. There seems to be a fair bit of activity around the offices with reports of plenty of jobs to quote and more importantly, jobs being won. Well done to those offices who have salespeople selling also, the results speak for themselves. This year Corporate Office will be focusing on getting more offices up and running in all states of Australia and New Zealand and continuing to develop the brand and implement new ideas to help grow your businesses. I want to wish you all the very best for 2010, and I know it will fly by as we are already a quarter of the way through the year! I want to encourage you to work hard and try to enjoy what you do but make sure your take time out to enjoy your families and friends. Take care. Corey.

Quote of the Month... ‘Easter tells us that life is to be interpreted not simply in terms of things but in terms of ideals.” Charles M Crowe.

New Master Franchise Owners... Welcome aboard to Steve Nousla who has come aboard as our Master Franchise owner for Greater Qld. Steve started his career as an apprentice Carpenter. After finishing his trade he spent several years working throughout North Queensland on Renovations and New Homes before working with G.J. Gardner Homes Townsville as the Supervisor where he learnt all that the GJ system has to offer. Deciding to expand his knowledge further he took on the role of project manager for KDH Design Shopfitters, travelling across Australia and New Zealand for their clients “Jeans West” and “Sunglass Hut”. After this he started his own shopfitting business completing projects across QLD and NSW. Unhappy with the prolonged travel he sold his business and took up a position as the CEO of one of the largest independent electronics service centres in Australia. Most recently though he has been working in his own building company Precision Projects Australia. Steven lives on the Sunshine Coast with his 4 children. Welcome Steve!

New Franchise Owners... A big welcome to Steve Rahme, who has taken up the Smith and Sons flag in Chatswood, New South Wales. Steve has been involved in the residential construction industry since 1981. He commenced his trade as a carpenter and worked through the supervisory roles for large residential home builders in the Sydney metropolitan areas, culminating in Construction Manager.

Doug Miller

Also from New South Wales, we welcome Doug Miller, who has come on board as Smith & Sons Gosford. Doug has acquired extensive experience in not only the building of cottages and cottage extensions, he has been in an advisory capacity meeting with Austrate in regards to the export of homes to Asia mainly Japan, Korea and Malaysia. He has also been involved at a senior management level to one of Australia’s leading kitchen & bathroom organizations which he is very passionate about always striving for excellence and quality, meticulously serving clients needs and expectations.

In the far south of New Zealand, Sam and Jenny Scott have joined the Smith & Sons crew as franchise owners in Winton. Both Sam and Jenny were bought up in Winton and live there now with their two year old daughter Millie and one week old son Fletcher. (see picture in ‘New Arrivals’!) Sam has been building since 2000, Jenny is a teacher and now a full time mother. They enjoy doing anything with their family especially getting outdoors jet boating, snowboarding and hunting (Sam!). Offices Opening... On the 24th of March, Paul and Anna Cartney celebrated their office opening at Ashburton with a few drinks at their new Design Centre, followed by a night out at a fantastic restaurant! Their Design Centre looked great and was a real labour of love as it had been attacked by vandals in recent weeks leading up to the opening. Friends, business partners, real estate agents and more came along for a great night and Leigh from Corporate Office made the trip over as well. All in all a brilliant night - well done Paul and Anna. Paul had a little extra celebration the next morning in his Torana - lighting up the tyres past the design centre and taking Leigh for a bit of a spin around the block - and around a few corners rather quick too! On the back of the Ashburton office opening, the next day the South Island Smith & Sons team got together for their years first franchise meeting for the year.

Auckland Master Meeting... Earlier this year, Auckland was home to the first Masters Meeting of the year. It was a great time for the masters to get together and plan for the year ahead. Darren, Greg and Leigh also came over for the meeting which was a very profitable day. The next day, Mark Fegan had planned a morning on an America’s Cup yacht which was a fantastic experience - and not a hint of sea sickness! Mark and Garth, the two sailors in the group were especially pumped when the occasion to steer the boat came up! A few of the other guys had a go at steering the boat as well - which was better than the ‘grinding’!!!

New Arrivals... Join us in congratulating Sam and Jenny Scott on the arrival of the newest member of the Smithy crew. Fletcher Paul (Smith) Scott was born 6lb8oz 25/3/10 Well done guys.

New Corporate Office... After two years on Walan St it was time for a change for the boys at Corporate Office. Now on the Esplanade at Mooloolaba, the new Corporate Office is close to some nice restaurants and cafes - which is good for lunch - but bad for waistlines!!

Well that’s it for this issue of the Smithy Telegraph! Remember if you have any news or pictures that you think might fit into the Smithy Telegraph, just email them through to us. Also - don’t forget to about our Annual Team Conference in Queenstown this year. Registration forms will be out the week after Easter so get them filled out and sent back ASAP. Happy Easter... and see you next time! join us on
